Epic Games has cited piracy as the key explanation behind group’s transformation from dedicated PC development to console-focused work.
The US-based indie giant – responsible for Unreal Engine technology as well as the Gears of War series – told Edge Magazine that consoles today offered more lucrative opportunities than the PC platform.
"If you walked into [Epic's Offices] six years ago, Epic was a PC company,” said the group’s president Mike Capps.
”We did one PS2 launch title, and everything else was PC. And now, people are saying ‘why do you hate the PC? You're a console-only company’. It's because the money's on consoles,” he added.
”We still do PC, we still love the PC, but we already saw the impact of piracy: it killed a lot of great independent developers and completely changed our business model.”
Capps’ comments are echoed by a vast array of companies that have switched from PC dedication to multi-platform plans.
Frankfurt-based company Crytek, a close rival to Epic in the game engine business, announced three years ago that it would switch to multi-platform game development as a way to safeguard itself from piracy.
Numerous publishers still ensure their games are released on PC, though Valve’s digital distribution service – Steam – is emerging as the primary destination for the PC, largely due to how Steam has a proven track record of being difficult to illicitly play games from.
Today, few companies dare take the risk of publishing on the PC only without putting in place some kind of online verification process.
Some, such as Blizzard’s login requirements for World of Warcraft, are subtle enough to remain unnoticed. Others, such as Ubisoft’s ‘always-on DRM’ process, quickly become magnets for controversy.

While AMD's Eyefinity multi-display gaming tech is undeniably impressive at first glance, digging deeper reveals key limitations. Some games work well, others not at all, and many are simply better suited to specific screen configurations. A three-way setup looks to be ideal from a compatibility perspective, and given current LCD prices, it's really not all that expensive. But would you take that over a single high-resolution display or a giant HDTV?

Somehow -- and we don't know how -- pre-orders for Lego Universe kicked off this past Friday and, again, we don't know how, there's no "special edition" that includes some actual Legos. Some of you Legomaniacs may already know, but boxed copies of the upcoming Lego MMO from Netdevil are now available for pre-order at Lego retail outlets, the online shop, the amusement park (Legoland!) and on LegoUniverse.com.
Dropping your 39.99 USD/EUR or 29.99 GBP on a copy will net you not just the game itself on DVD, but also a month of free play (30 days, to be precise), a "story leaflet," and a user guide -- some folks will also get an "exclusive Minifigure" and a code to redeem said Minifigure in-game ("while supplies last"). Though the game has been in closed beta for some time now, the game has yet to receive an official launch date. That said, we have to imagine that Netdevil is building towards that announcement, right? You know, with Legos? Isn't that what they do over there?

In a recent interview with UK gaming mag PC Zone, Treyarch head Mark Lamia announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops -- unlike the last Call of Duty game on PC -- will feature dedicated servers for PC players. "I think dedicated servers are excellent. I don't see any reason not to see them unless ... well, I just don't see any reason not to," Lamia responded when asked about Black Ops' PC iteration, reports CVG.
Covering his bases (and likely not trying to insult Infinity Ward's reasoning behind not supporting dedicated servers), Lamia added, "We do work very hard to reconcile the desire to manipulate and modify those dedicated servers with offering them the persistent experience and benefits that the console system provides ... so people can run dedicated servers and also participate in the communal experience the console players get to have, given they're all on first-party servers."
And with that, it would seem that Treyarch will give us a chance to officially leap through the air while raining an unlimited supply of explosives on the ground below us when the game arrives this November. Hooray?

Intel might have beaten AMD to the punch with a CPU featuring a built-in GPU, but it relied on a relatively crude process of simply packaging two separate dies together. AMD's long-discussed Fusion product integrates the two key components into one die, and the company is confident it will be out this year — earlier than had been expected.

Only two countries in the world have software patents which make it impossible to freely use video codecs such as AVC (H.264). This has led to projects such as Firefox not including AVC support with the HTML 5 video tag in all their releases, resulting in the rest of the world having to suffer indirectly the effects of software patents as well. To rectify this situation at least somewhat, I have created the Wild Fox project, which aims to release Firefox builds with the features previously excluded due to software patents. This software will be available to those in non-software patent encumbered countries. Any developers who wish to join the project are more than welcome.

Acer is preparing to launch devices based on Google's Chrome OS at next month's Computex trade show, according to reports. Multiple sources have apparently told VentureBeat that the company will show off devices at the Taipei show at the beginning of June. It doesn't specify what the devices are, although given that Chrome OS is primarily designed for low-powered laptops and Acer's status as the world's second biggest PC maker, it seems inconceivable that the devices won't be netbooks. Meanwhile, Google is considering implementing a Coverflow interface into Chrome OS. One design adheres fairly closely to Apple's template, and allows users to flip through applications and web pages with 'hotkeys and swiping gestures.' Favicons will be displayed beneath the pages, allowing users to click these and head straight to the application.

The PC Gaming Alliance has announced that Arxan Technologies, Corsair and Logitech have joined the outfit as new members and that Razer’s Min-Liang Tan has joined as PCGA board director.
The PCGA say these additions will help them keep PC gaming “at the forefront of the industry, help it to overcome its challenges, and continue to fulfill its limitless potential.”
“These members bring a wealth of experience and a rich diversity of products and services to the PCGA that will significantly enhance our existing membership base”, said PCGA president Randy Stude.
“By joining our rapidly growing organization, they are demonstrating their support for expanding the PC Gaming industry and their commitment to improving the PC gaming experience.
Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan said that he was honoured for his company to have been elected to the PCGA board of directors.
“There is so much synergy between Razer’s core DNA - an essence of pure commitment to improving the PC gaming experience with state-of-the-art peripherals - and this organization’s drive to establish high standards and quality guidelines for the evolving industry at large,” he said.
“Both Razer and the PC Gaming Alliance are dedicated to addressing the needs of a maturing category and its largely sophisticated audience.”
Arxan CTO and VP of engineering Kevin Morgan also said his firm was pleased to be part of the PCGA, citing the group’s enhancing of industry development and work on security and anti-piracy as reasons why.
“Our software security expertise in game protection can be leveraged to formulate proven and best-of-breed approaches to implement business practices and technology solutions that preserve code integrity, user experience and business models throughout the PC gaming ecosystem,” he said.
“Arxan now looks forward to participating in various initiatives, such as the anti-piracy sub-committee, to ensure that consideration is given to the protection of IP, preservation of game integrity and unobtrusive DRM models, especially as PC games are exposed to continuous hacking as a result of the increase in global digital distribution.”

A rumored fallout between Zynga and Facebook may be leading to every Zynga title facing eviction from the social networking site. The Times has reported that every Zynga title may be facing eviction from Facebook.
Facebook's 30 per cent commission on in-game transactions has upset many studios, but after Zynga apparently threatened to leave Facebook altogether, Facebook seem to have called their bluff.
All Zynga titles – including Mafia Wars, FishVille and Café World – are now thought to be under threat of expulsion.
Zynga generates estimated annual revenues of £100m from its social titles. Farmville has a separate, standalone website from its Facebook platform, and it has been suggested that Zynga is considering launching their own social networking site built around the game.
After such bold allusions, however, The Times reports rumblings of a massive Zynga backtrack. No quick fix seemed likely after a Facebook insider told The Times that Zynga is “a bad actor, which is putting profits before its users.”

Eurogamer can exclusively reveal that Star Wars: The Old Republic's eight character classes will each split into two specialised Advanced Classes, giving the player a total of 16 choices of career in BioWare's MMO.
The first Advanced Classes to be revealed are those for the Sith Warrior. Choosing Juggernaut will shape this warrior into a tough, damage-soaking tank class, while the Marauder is all about channelling rage and maximising damage output.
Looking at the first exclusive screens of the two, it looks like the Juggernaut will feature the heavy body-modifications of Darth Vader, while the Marauder will be able ape Darth Maul's twin-lightsaber fighting style.
Choosing your Advanced Class is a pure gameplay decision rather than a story decision. Advanced Classes will share the same epic narrative, but have different combat styles and play different roles in a group.
Each Advanced Class will have its own skills and abilities that define its role on the battlefield, and in some cases grant access to new weapon and armour types. Choosing one means you won't have any access to the skills of the other.
An example of the Sith Warrior's Advanced Class chart. Disclaimer: number and type of skills may vary.
And each Advanced Class will have a further three branches of skills to specialise in (equivalent to World of Warcraft's talent specialisation options on a single class). Unlike the Advanced Classes themselves, you can mix and match these if you like, although they're all trained from the same pool of points.
The first two skill trees are particular to your Advanced Class, while the the third is a shared set of skills which expand on the core abilities of the main class.
There's much we still don't know about Advanced Classes: what the other classes will advance into, when you'll make the choice, and whether you'll be able to change your choice at a later date. But it's already clear that the range of options they'll offer the player is impressively large.

A German citizen was sued for copyright infringement because copyrighted material was downloaded through his network while he was on vacation. Although the court did not find him guilty of copyright infringement, he was fined for not having password-protected his network: 'Private users are obligated to check whether their wireless connection is adequately secured to the danger of unauthorized third parties abusing it to commit copyright violation,' the court said.

Microsoft's announcement this week that it is preparing to end support for machines running Windows XP SP2 not only represents a challenge for the thousands of businesses still running SP2, but also is the end of an era for both Microsoft and its customers. It wasn't until 2004 that the final release of XP SP2 hit the streets, but when it did, it represented a huge step forward in security for Windows users. It wasn't necessarily the feature set that mattered as much as the fact that the protections were enabled by default and taken out of the users' hands.

Microsoft has unleashed its latest weapon in its ongoing battle with Google.
The software giant has launched its flagship product Office 2010, aimed at businesses and home users.
The latest version of the software has a free online component - called Office Web Apps.
Analysts believe the web offering is a response to Google, which has been encroaching on Microsoft's core business with its free online tools.
Crucially, Microsoft will also offer its online office suite to all users of one of the world's most popular social networking sites, Facebook.
"There's no question - Microsoft is responding to Google's threat," said Whit Andrews, analyst at research firm Gartner.
'Microsoft world'
Google and Microsoft have increasingly begun to stray into each other's traditional markets.
Microsoft has thrown its full weight behind its search engine Bing, whilst Google is about to launch its own operating system, known as Chrome OS.
It is critical that Microsoft capture users who are not tethered to the same desktop PC every day
Whit Andrews
Gartner
The battle for the Office software market started in 2006 when the search giant launched the first elements of its Google Docs.
"Until Google emerged with a credible suite of networked applications, Microsoft was not compelled to do anything."
Google Docs now offers word-processing, spreadsheet software and a presentation tool, amongst others. Businesses can pay for premium versions.
"Each release of Office has a new set of competitors and we take those very seriously," Jeff Teper, vice president of the Microsoft Business Division told BBC News.
"[Google] has introduced a product that they have tried to target businesses with - it hasn't done very well."
Google Docs currently has a small (4%) but growing share of the market.
Google Chrome OS will be released in the second half of 2010
By contrast, Microsoft dominates the office software space, with a market share of more than 94%, according to Gartner. The vast majority of sales are to businesses.
Business "is still overwhelmingly a Microsoft world", said Sheri McLeish, analyst at Forrester Research.
Microsoft retains its dominant position despite the free offerings from Google and other alternatives such as Zoho or the free office suite OpenOffice.org.
Ahead of Microsoft's launch Google posted a blog urging businesses to switch to its software, claiming that it represents a real alternative".
"If you're considering upgrading Office with Office, we'd encourage you to consider an alternative: upgrading Office with Google Docs," it read.
Despite, Google's focus on businesses, Mr Andrews said its message and software were likely to appeal to younger people, who have not necessarily grown up using Microsoft products.
"If all your content is generated in the Google apps system and it lives there, you would need to have a really good reason to move," he told BBC News.

Capcom has mentioned a Mega Man online game as part of a new development strategy aimed at reversing a steep decline in its income.
According to GameSpot, Mega Man Online - which may or may not be related to the recent Mega Man Universe trademark - is a PC online game being co-developed with South Korea's Neowiz Games.
The drive into the Asian PC games market spearheaded by this Mega Man game is just one part of a multi-pronged attempt to revitalise the publisher's fortunes. Capcom is also aiming to cut development time on its biggest games, take a more "rigorous" stance on working with oversees partners, and devote 20 to 30 per cent of its resources to creating original games.
The slump in Capcom's financial fortunes - net income fell 73 per cent in the company's last fiscal year, and revenues 27 per cent - was blamed partly on the poor sales of Dark Void and Bionic Commando. The publisher admitted "inadequate know-how about supervising outsourced operations and overly optimistic plans".
But it's looking ahead to a far rosier current fiscal year, with the forthcoming Monster Hunter Portable 3, Dead Rising 2, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and the current Lost Planet 2 all expected to sell very well.

alphadogg sends a NetworkWorld.com piece going over the Business Software Alliance's latest stats on software theft around the world.
"Expanding PC sales in emerging markets is increasing the rate of software piracy, according to the Business Software Alliance and IDC. The rate of global software piracy in 2009 was 43%, meaning that for every $100 worth of legitimate software sold in 2009, an additional $75 worth of unlicensed software also made its way into the market. This is a 2-percentage-point increase from 2008. Software theft exceeded $51 billion in commercial value in 2009, according to the BSA. IDC says lowering software piracy by just 10 percentage points during the next four years would create nearly 500,000 new jobs and pump $140 billion into 'ailing economies.' ... In the United States, software piracy remained at 20%, the lowest level of software theft of any nation in the world. ... The PC markets in Brazil, India, and China accounted for 86% of the growth in PC shipments worldwide."
The BSA president said, "Few if any industries could withstand the theft of $51 billion worth of their products." It's unclear whether that was a brag about the industry's robustness, or a result of the industry's low cost of goods sold.

Mozilla has given a breakdown of its plans for Firefox 4. Perhaps the most striking change to Firefox 4 is the user interface, which takes a great deal of inspiration from Google Chrome. 'Something UI designers have known for a long time is that the simpler an interface looks, the faster it will seem,' said director of Firefox Mike Beltzner during the presentation. Also mooted was the ability to give applications such as Gmail and Twitter their own permanent tabs for easy access, and the introduction of a 'switch to tab' button, allowing power users running hundreds of tabs to quickly find the one they want. Beltzner said Mozilla was also looking at replicating Chrome's tactic of silently updating the browser in the background, removing the annoying wait when Firefox first loads up.

t's time for Google to realize that it is way too early to be pushing an OS that only provides a browser. If Chrome OS fails on netbooks it will just make OEMs even more hesitant to use a Linux-based OS instead of Windows. Google should instead build upon its already successful Android platform and provide a system that offers local applications.

TQ Digital runs other online games Conquer Online, Eudemons Online, The Warlords and Zero Online.
