Some say that the Windows 3.0 GUI (remember, it needed MS-DOS/DR-DOS to work) was the single most important version as it allowed Microsoft to get its day. The first truly successful Windows operating system is twenty years old today; Windows 3.0 was launched on the 22nd of May 1990 and was the successor to Windows 2.1x

StarCraft 2 may be one of the most anticipated titles of this year, but after checking out this 8-bit recreation of the game that started it all, we're inclined to cancel our pre-order and spend the rest of our days praying for a playable version. It takes us back to our elementary school days, when we thought getting to play Oregon Trail in school was about the best thing ever. Can you imagine if we had this instead? Zerg rushing would be at, like, a whole 'nother level.
But we digress. Instead of pining for what could've been, you should head past the break to watch the game in action and hope for what could be: an actual playable release of this charming 8-bit recreation. What else could you possibly want in life?

The Limited Collector's Edition will include an additional quest to complete, a new in-game location and outfit, as well as a new dog breed, some playing cards and a coin.

Sega is bringing a Virtual Console-like experience to PC digital distribution platforms. Sega Genesis Classics is a series of individual Genesis games available for download via Steam and additional, unspecified download services.
On June 1, PC users will be able to download Golden Axe, Ecco the Dolphin, Comix Zone, and Vectorman, "from $2.99." We don't yet know how the prices will vary per game, but even if just one is that cheap, it's quite a savings over the $8 Virtual Console price.
The screenshots sent out by Sega also include images of Gain Ground, Altered Beast, Space Harrier, Crack Down, Sonic 3D Blast, and Shadow Dancer, so we can expect to see those games from the distant past on PC in the near future.

StarCraft II is to be released in an edited version in South Korea to avoid an adults-only rating.
Korean e-sports site FOMOS (via 1UP and Team Liquid) has revealed that Blizzard has submitted a new version of the game with blood coloured black and smoking references and vulgar language removed.
The original version of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty received an adults-only rating - 18 years and up - from the country's ratings board last month. This would have been a tremendous blow to Blizzard's fortunes in StarCraft-mad Korea, where pro-gaming StarCraft contests draw large crowds and are televised.
The ratings board has agreed to an Age 12 rating for the censored version of the game.
"Since StarCraft II was originally developed to be a game adolescents could enjoy, we're very pleased with the Game Rating Board's decision," Blizzard said. It's considering releasing the unedited version as well with the adult rating, according to FOMOS.
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, the first of three SCII games, will be released on 27th July.

BioWare has revealed that Hoth, the iconic ice planet of the Star Wars universe, will feature in its MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Videogamer has the exclusive info as well as some frosty screens and art.
Hoth, of course, was the setting for the memorable opening scenes of the second Star Wars film, The Empire Strikes Back, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this week. Yes, you are that old.
In The Old Republic, the planet is an ungoverned wasteland contested by the Imperial and Republic factions. It's a starship graveyard, littered with wreckage from a major battle in the Great War.
Pirates are attempting to salvage the technology, which includes prototype ships, using an army of droids and mercenaries - but now the Republic and Empire are back to reclaim what's theirs.
Star Wars: The Old Republic is scheduled for a spring 2011 release.

When Square Enix said their video game announcement would “change Japanese history” they meant it literally. The countdown is over and the announcement is… Sengoku Ixa.
Sengoku Ixa is a free to play browser based warring states simulation game. Players manage a plot of land and wage war with other areas by voting on battles with their mobile phones. While you only manage a small group, efforts are tallied with other friendly players. The side that wins the most battles gains more land.
So, FarmVille mixed with Sengoku Basara = Sengoku Ixa? That’s what this “history changing” announcement sounds like.

Google has unveiled a new web-to-TV service, Google TV, which will launch later in the year and enable users to search for videos to watch on their televisions via the Google search engine.
Google TV will also make games more accessible on televisions - with Adobe Flash Player 10.1 directly integrated into the Google Chrome browser it uses, television users will be able to access Flash games from the web.
"In our announcement today at Google I/O, we challenged web developers to start coming up with the next great web and Android apps designed specifically for the TV experience," said Google TV product manager Salahuddin Choudhary, writing on Google's blog.
"Developers can start optimising their websites for Google TV today," he added. "Soon after launch, we'll release the Google TV SDK and web APIs for TV so that developers can build even richer applications and distribute them through Android Market. [...] We're looking forward to seeing all of the ways developers will use this new platform."
The new technology will be based on the company's Android operating system, and numerous companies have already signed up to support it, including Sony and Logitech who will release compatible products such as TVs, Blu-ray players and companion boxes later this year.
Logitech also confirmed that it would release a remote control that combines keyboard and remote control capabilities, and Google added that it would introduce other methods of navigation and control, but didn't give examples, according to Gamasutra.
Flash gaming site Kongregate announced it has partnered with Adobe to bring over 100 of its games to Google's Android mobile platform and Google said that it is also starting to build strategic alliances with a number of companies including Jinni.com and Rovi to provide enhanced searches, personalised recommendations and social features for Google TV.
The first devices are set to go on sale in the autumn, with software developments kits coming soon after.

Google has unveiled its own app store that allows you to install and run games straight from a browser.
It's called the Chrome Web Store and is due later this year. What's more, it works in any web browser.
Google used adapted 3D game LEGO Star Wars: The Quest for R2-D2 to demonstrate Chrome Web Store at the Google I/O conference recently. Reports claim the game launched and ran without a hitch. Google also demonstrated PopCap's tremendous Plants vs. Zombies.
But it won't be all fun and games: boring software to do with work can be installed and run quick-sharp as well.
Developers can host both free and paid-for content on the Chrome Web Store.

Blizzard's World of Warcraft has boosted NetEase for the first quarter of the financial year ended March 31, pushing up sales and profits for the Chinese operator.
The company announced profits of RMB 452.3 million ($66.3 million), compared to RMB 416.7 million in 2009, and revenues of RMB 1.2 billion ($175.1 million), up from RMB 781.7 million the prior year.
"For the first quarter, total revenues from online games increased by approximately 50 per cent year-over-year, primarily due to revenues generated from new games and the operation of Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft," said William Ding, CEO of NetEase.
"We are currently testing ways to expand the game's presence in certain second and third-tier cities in China. Our application for the launch of Blizzard Entertainment's Wrath of the Lich King, the game's second expansion set, is currently under regulatory review," he added.
Advertising revenues was also up for 50 per cent for the quarter, with Ding adding that registrations and portal traffic also grew during the period.

Firefox's co-founder Blake Ross is skeptical about the future of Firefox. He says that 'the Mozilla Organization has gradually reverted back to its old ways of being too timid, passive, and consensus-driven to release breakthrough products quickly.' Within the past year Chrome has been steadily increasing its market share, along with the other WebKit-based browsers like Safari. Meanwhile Mozilla's (outgoing) CEO says that while Firefox is more competitive than ever, they're looking forward to their mobile version of Firefox. 'Clearly, both are annoyed at what has happened to their former renegade web browser. But, by many accounts, Firefox is no longer considered to be the light, open alternative it once was.

Interested to know how you were gonna fill up that Chrome OS app page? Google just announced its new online web app store at I/O. So far they've shown off Dark Room for image editing, a pretty slick version of TweetDeck, and yes, like every other platform known to man, there's Plants. vs. Zombies and Lego Star Wars. Paid-for software will be offered -- Dark Room is $4.99, if you want to go ahead and put that money aside. No word on a launch date, but we'll keep pushing for more. We were just shown a demo of Sports Illustrated's interactive magazine, and we gotta say, it's mighty impressive -- embedded video, fully searchable, and some pretty clever tricks with geolocation that frankly exceed most anything we've seen on the iPad thus far. The web store -- for Chrome and Chrome OS -- will hit the dev channel "soon."

Wired has a lengthy investigation into the state of PC game mods, and the amateurs keeping the scene exciting in the wake of draconian DRM placed on many PC titles by major studios. It highlights a number of creative modders, such as Scott Reismanis, founder and editor of Mod DB, and his community-driven alternative to Valve's Steam — Desura — which is 'a distribution system, and, like Steam, will sell games and champion indie titles. But the way it handles mods makes it even more exciting.

Facebook looks likely to cave into pressure from users and simplify its privacy settings in the near future.
It follows criticisms of its privacy policy from US senators, the European Union and civil liberty groups.
The social networking giant told BBC News that it was listening to the message from users that it has "made things too complex".
"We're working on responding to these concerns," a spokeswoman said.
"Watch this space," she added.
Crisis meeting
At the end of last year Facebook changed its default privacy settings, allowing profile information to be shared with the wider web, unless users specifically opted out.
Last month it moved a step further, opening up Facebook data to third-party websites, described by founder Mark Zuckerberg as a move towards "a web where the default is social".
While Facebook sold the idea as a way to offer a more personalised surfing experience, critics were concerned that users were losing control over their information.
Facebook has launched a new site to appeal to mobile users
It prompted a letter from the European Commission saying changes to its privacy settings were "unacceptable".
The move caused outrage among some users, who have organised a "Quit Facebook" day, scheduled for May 31.
Last week Facebook held an internal meeting to deal with the crisis, which has already seen some high-profile users deactivate their Facebook accounts.
Facebook said it "didn't comment on deactivations".
"Some 10 million users have joined Facebook since the recent privacy changes," said a spokeswoman.
"There is a notion that people don't know what they are doing but people are much more savvy about their online privacy than is often portrayed," she added.
Since the changes were introduced in December, more than 50% of users have changed their privacy settings, Facebook said in a statement to BBC News.
"The fact that approximately half have accepted, and half are customising shows that our recommendations are reasonable," the statement read.
But it acknowledged that more could be done.
"We have heard from our users that our efforts to provide granular control have made things too complex. Of course we're working on responding to these concerns," it said.
Critics say navigating its privacy policy is overly complex.
Its current privacy policy has 50 different settings and 170 options and runs to 5,830 words, making it longer than the US Constitution.
Alternatives to Facebook are springing up, including open source social network Diaspora.
Designed by four students from New York University, the project has quickly gained thousands of backers and received $125,000 in donations to help get it off the ground.
Mobile world
In separate news, Facebook has launched a site designed to increase its footprint in the developing world.
0.facebook.com is a mobile site that includes all the social network's key features but is offered with no data charges.
It will be available through 50 mobile operators in 45 countries.
"When using the mobile internet, people around the world face two main challenges - sometimes the experience is too slow to be fun and the cost of data plans and understanding them can be daunting," Facebook's Sid Murlidhar wrote on the firm's official blog.
"We have designed 0.facebook.com to help solve these two barriers and we hope that even more people will discover the mobile internet with Facebook as a result," he added.
Facebook currently has more than 400 million users around the world.

Square Enix is teasing a game with an unlikely partner. Web portal Yahoo! and the video game publisher have an announcement set for May 21.
If that wasn’t surprising enough, the teaser site says it will change Japanese history. Maybe they mean literally? A time traveling Sengoku period game could fit the bill.
In their financial report, Square Enix mentioned moving into network games was one of their goals. A partnership with Yahoo suggests this could be a browser based game or another mobile phone title. Just a couple of days until we find out for sure.

After a tumultuous fall-out, the Farmville and Mafia Wars team rebuild bridges and establish a 'five year strategic relationship' based around expanded Zynga use of Facebook credits
Facebook and Zynga have entered into a “five-year strategic relationship” that will see an expanded use of Facebook Credits in Zynga games.
The move comes after a turbulent few weeks in the relationship between the two parties. Zynga, as one of several Facebook games studios upset with recent alterations to Facebook notifications and in-game transactions commission, threatened to pull all of their titles from the site.
It was believed that this threat was met by Facebook in kind, the firm threatening expulsion for all Zynga’s titles and a company insider calling Zynga “a bad actor, which is putting profits before its users.”
It seems that Zynga have now back-tracked on any ill-will, however. Of the new deal, Zynga founder and CEO Mark Pincus said he was pleased.
"We are excited about Facebook's long-term commitment to social gaming and Zynga, and look forward to working with them and other platform providers to bring the best social gaming experience to users worldwide,” he added.

News via http://www.aep-emu.de/
FreeOrion is an open source project that aims to provide a free and platform-independent game in the tradition of the Master of Orion games (released under the GPL).
Quote:
Changes since the last release include:
* Progress on the 3D interactive combat system. This can be tested during regular games by running "freeorion --test-3d-combat" or directly by running "freeorion --tech-demo". This is not yet meant to be playable, however.
* Transitioned to CMake from SCons build system (Visual Studio and XCode projects are also still available)
* Tweaked planet population growth dependence on health
* Misc. content / effect fixes
* Various rendering tweaks and configurable options
* Made the expected locations of binary and data directories more flexible
* Fixed issue where running "freeorion -h" would still start the program after outputting help text for command-line options
* Added indicator to system resource summary to indicate when there is no import or export of a resource
*Added location indicator to production queue items
* Various AI script improvements
* Fixed bug where planets weren´t properly autoselected on production screen, preventing production items from being enqueued in certain situations
* Fixed issue where fleet buttons were rendered over top of sitrep or sidepanel
* Moved "Moving To Unknown System" or "Holding at System" text to fleet panels, rather than a separate text box below the fleets list on the fleets window
* Changed resource meter growth to +1/turn from a much more complicated formula
* Fixed issues with meter growth prediction
* Made ships regenerate 0.1 fuel/turn when not moving
* Fixed issue where previous effectsgroups´s target set were being used for subsequent effectsgroups, leading to problems with techs or buildings acting on the wrong objects
* Fixed issues with Number, NumberOf, WithinDistance, and Affiliation conditions
* Fixed issues with SetTechAvailability effect
* Added minimum population requirements, below which population of planets is set to 0, to prevent very small numbers being tracked
* Made buildings on a planet become owned by empires that colonize the planet
* Added missing TradeStockpile property for effect definitions
* Tweaked part tooltips on the design screen
* Expanded part encyclopedia entry text
* Added or fixed CreateBuilding and CreateShip effects and parsing
* Allowed full effectsgroup definitions to be added to ship parts and hulls, rather than just stat-setting effects
* Fixed issue with UI number rendering showing wrong numbers of digits
* Made systems with resource sharing connections provide fleet supply
* Completely reworked the visibility system to take into account stealth, detection and distance, and to have empire remember previously-seen but not-currently-visible objects and include these in displayed systems in GUI
* Added fog-of-war indicator on systems and planets that aren´t currently visible to player, but which the player previously had visibility of
* Fixed issue with unreadable text on research queue
* Added Stationary condition, that matches non-moving objects (for effects definitions)
* Added right-click popup command to split fleets
* Added the ability to right-click command buildings or ships to be scrapped or cancel scrapping. Ordered-scrapped ships aren´t included in fleet fuel and speed calculations. Ordered scrapped ships and buildings have a large red X over their icons.
* Added an optional coloured disc around objects to show thier visibility radius, and an additional optional slider to set the "assumed stealth level" that is deducted from visibility ring radius, to show how far away objects of the indicated stealth could be seen by ships, planets or buildngs
* Added a check for OpenGL version and automatic setting of some rendering options at first startup to hopefully prevent some crashes on systems without OpenGL 2.0 support
* Made default mouse mode non-exclusive on Win32, to avoid issues with disappearing mouse pointer
* Reworked planet panel rendering
* Changed UI default colour scheme
* Fixed issue with sidepanel scrollbar not showing up when needed
* Stored empire name and server address be remembered from game to game
* Disabled deleting of old autosaves when loading a save, to aide debugging
* Added safety / sanity checks to order execution to prevent AIs from crashing the game
* Removed MSVC 2005 project files
* Made resource distribution and fleet supply use known systems, rather than only currently-visible systems.
* Fixed issues with fleet arrival sitreps on turns when those fleets were also destroyed
* Fixed fleet window layout issues
* Fixed issue with inconsistency between expanded or collapsed panels on sidepanel in or out of production mode
* Fixed crash where dragging a fleet onto the ships list would crash
* Various translation updates
* Fixed some issues with old gamestate flashing on the screen briefly when loading another game, or with old galaxy map appearing over the intro screen after resigning or being disconnected.
* Fixed issue where meter accounting estimates were wrong when loading games
* Hid autogenerated effect / condition descriptions by default, since many people were complaining about how hard they were to understand. Showing nothing is probably better in most cases, but they can be turned back on if desired.
* Fixed starvation sitrep generation
* Fixed code that determine the directory where the running binary is located on various operating systems
* Reworked automatic combat resolution so that combats can occur over several turns, and ships and planets can be damaged (see ship health indicator and planet construction dropping).
* Added a planet captured sitrep message
* Disabled system name multi-empire colouring due to issue it was causing when interacting with underlining or bolding of system names to indicate presence of a shipyard or homeworld
* Added option to specify player´s name in single player
* Fixed missing close X on FleetWnd
* Fixed issue with "byte order mark" in stringtable files
* Improved credits scroll rendering
* Added an optional zoom slider to the map
* Added utility variable "Value" to set meter effects, to allow modifying the existing value that´s being set without needing cumbersome variables like "Target.MaxFarming"
* Separated full screen and windowed resolution options
* Made clicking on a tech on the queue show that tech in the encyclopedia
* Made players joining multiplayer lobbies for new games be assigned different colours from any other players in the lobby, and be assigned empire name equal to their player names
* Added meters to ships to store / determine their part stat values (range, ROF, damage), and effects to modify these meters
* Added backup stringtable lookup in the English table. This means that missing strings in translated stringtables will be shown as English text, rather than an error message in game.
* Tweaked layout of multiplayer lobby screen
* Added --load and --auto-advance-first-turn console commands to load a single player save with the specified name and to autmatically advance the turn once, which are useful for debugging.
* Fixed issue with SitRep being stuck under other windows on the map screen.
* Fixed issue where button text on intro screen would overflow available space
* Fixed up FreeOrion icon file to have multiple resolutions, and to be used for the Win32 window and executable file.
* Fixed some issues with Win32 installer and uninstaller.

The first phase of the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty beta will come to an end on Monday, 31st May.
Several weeks will pass while Blizzard makes hardware and software changes. The beta will then be resurrected a couple of weeks prior to the game's full release on 27th July.
"We'd like to thank all of our beta-test participants for your enthusiasm, dedication, and valuable feedback during the beta test," wrote Blizzard on the game's forum.

Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited is the third most played MMO in North America.
That's what NPD Group found after surveying a random 19,000 people in January, according to Massively.
Of those people, 30 per cent play WOW, 10 per cent play RuneScape and now 7 per cent play Dungeons & Dragons Online.
Guild Wars had held third place for two years before this, but DDO activity doubled at the beginning of the year and dislodged the ArenaNet-developed game.
The boost in Dungeons & Dragons Online activity stems from a re-launch in autumn 2009 as a free-to-play game. That means people can download and play for absolutely nothing, only choosing to splash out to access more content past level 20 and enable the full suite of guild, auction house and support features. Micro-transactions are built in, too.
DDO is not free-to-play here in Europe, but Europeans are able to access the free US servers.
Warner Bros. Interactive splashed out and bought DDO developer Turbine in April 2010. Turbine also makes The Lord of the Rings Online.
