A new version of OpenTTD has been released. OpenTTD is a clone of the Microprose game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe", a popular game originally written by Chris Sawyer. It attempts to mimic the original game as closely as possible while extending it with new features.

The arrival of Fable III on PC will be the "first step" of a much larger push by Microsoft to boost the profile of gaming on Windows 7 desktops.
That's according to a head office-circulated response designed to placate inquiring journalists. Luckily, this fell onto Kotaku's lap.
Anyone asking this: "Does Fable III on Windows signal a larger reinvestment by Microsoft in PC gaming? How is this different from the previous times you've announced a reinvestment in PC gaming and not quite come through with a robust offering?"
Will be met with this: "In terms of revenue, Windows is far and away the largest gaming platform in the world, so it's an incredibly important part of Microsoft's business. From core games like Fable III to casual, social and Facebook titles, more gaming happens on Windows than anywhere else.
"Windows 7 is a world-class gaming platform, and you can bet Microsoft has a vested interest in using it as a platform for amazing first party content. Fable III on Windows as well as Xbox 360 this holiday is a great first step, and we'll have more news for you later this summer."
Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux gave Fable III a 26th October release date at E3. He didn't specify whether this will be simultaneous on PC and Xbox 360.

Though PC gaming did not feature in Microsoft's E3 press conferences, the tech giant has been telling journalists that it's once again supporting its original platform.
According an internal mail discovered by consumer gaming site Kotaku, it seems Microsoft's PRs are pre-prepared with an answer to queries on whether the recently-announced Windows version of Fable III signals a renewed investment in PC gaming.
The official response to such a question reads: "In terms of revenue, Windows is far and away the largest gaming platform in the world, so it's an incredibly important part of Microsoft's business.
Whether this really does signal a widespread Microsoft return to PC gaming remains to be seen. It has made similar pledges in the past, most recently with the Games For Windows Live multiplayer, social networking and digital distribution platform. This was received poorly by PC gamers, despite a number of redesigns.
Despite a tradition of industry doom-saying, PC gaming remains a major earner. Social network game FarmVille enjoys over 80 million users, while Bobby Kotick recently revealed that "non-console-based games" provide around 70% of Activision's profit.

For those under eighteen who play video games in China, life just got a little harder. Not only is gold farming illegal, but starting August 1, virtual currency platform makers are expected to put in safeties that prohibit underage players from using virtual currencies — because doing such a thing might promote 'unwholesome' behavior. The new regulations explicitly 'forbid content advocating pornography, cults, superstitions, gambling, and violence in all online games.' The business papers are picking it up as a number of stocks from companies like Tencent Holdings — which is heavily based in virtual currency in China — fell about 5%, though the company said that the ban on minors will not affect it."

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has revealed that console games, including the Call of Duty, only provide a third of the publishing giant's operating profit. 70 per cent is raised from "non-console-based" games.
In its first quarter this year, Activision's profits hit $318 million, $189 million up on the same time in 2009.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal last week - when he also hinted at plans for a subscription-based Call of Duty - Kotick shrugged off concerns about a decline in sales for retail games.
"I care a lot less," he said. "It used to be, I would religiously look at weekly retail sell-through data, but it's a very small part of our business now. Today, probably 70 percent of our operating profit comes from non-console-based video games. So, while you might see a month-to-month change or volatility against expectations, that doesn't really get us too concerned."
Website Gamasutra confirmed with Activision that 'non-console-based video games' means just that, and does not incorporate console DLC.
Given Activision's relatively small hand in PC and mobile games at present, the vast bulk of this 70 per cent comes from World of Warcraft and its 11.5 million subscribers.
In 2009, Activision revealed that the MMO's operating profit stood at 55 per cent, compared to its 23 per cent overall profit margins for its most recent quarter. This would seem to clarify why Kotick is so interested in making Call of Duty into an online world.
The third World of Warcraft expansion, Catacylsm, is due for release later this year.

Retail prices for PCs could be set to rise as PC manufacturers and vendors encounter rising component costs, following reports from several Asian manufacturers that component supplies were around 20 per cent short of demand.
According to the Financial Times, Acer recently raised its prices for the first time in five years due to rising prices of DRAM chips, which have doubled over the course of the last year, but insists that consumer demand remains strong.
The FT also speculates that with the margins of many vendors already wafer thin – nine per cent for HP, three per cent for Acer and four per cent for Dell – the days of ultra low-cost netbooks could be coming to an end.

Ever since Telltale announced an agreement with NBC Universal to develop an episodic series of games based on Jurassic Park, we've been kept awake at night, wondering just how one goes about defeating a Tyrannosaurus Rex using nothing but an umbrella handle, a lightbulb and a unicycle. There are at least seven ways to do it -- trust us -- but Telltale design director Dave Grossman informed us at E3 that Jurassic Park won't quite fit the company's traditional adventure structure.
"... in the case of Jurassic Park, we've wanted to kind of step out and do something that's cinematically much more serious than the kind of.... you know, we feel like we're getting pigeonholed a little bit as a company that makes funny cartoon games about talking animals, whereas really what we think of ourselves as is a company that makes games about cinema," Grossman said. "And so we want to explore some different territory. How is the gameplay supporting the tension of the scene, and what kind of tension is it? How is the game paced? And so you're going to find all of that stuff in the Jurassic Park series."
While Jurassic Park will feature adventure mechanics deemed "appropriate," it seems its focus won't necessarily be on laid-back lateral thinking. "I don't want to have it be a game about hanging around and solving thinky puzzles at your own pace," Grossman explained. "It just doesn't seem like the right thing to do for that." And while that might seem to suggest an action-oriented approach, Grossman wasn't willing to characterize it to such a simple degree. "You can definitely expect tension elements, let's say. Whether they're action or, well, there are a lot of ways to do that. I think there'll be a liberal mix of stuff in that game."
Let's hope we learn more before Telltale's Jurassic Park begins its monthly excursions from Isla Sorna Nublar this winter.

An anonymous reader passes along a DMCA takedown notice directed at Google and authored by the British Phonographic Industry, Britain's equivalent of the RIAA. P2pnet identifies the BPI as the outfit that "contributed to the British government's Digital Ecomy bill, complete with its ACTA Three Strikes and you're Off The Net element, with hardly a murmur from the UK lamescream media." Are there any precedents for a UK trade organization attempting to use an American law to force an American company to take down links to UK-copyrighted material?

The United States government has decided that children need a video game to learn about what to do before, during, and after an emergency or hazardous event. Collect an emergency kit! Create an emergency plan! Be informed of what to do! Suffer from heat exhaustion inside the Superdome! ... Wait, what? Oh, I guess FEMA omitted that last one. Microsoft has launched a programme aimed at cutting down cyber crime and reducing potential losses from online fraud.
Internet Fraud Alert, which was created jointly with the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance, allows participants to report stolen personal information or credit card numbers to the appropriate organisation.
“Through a centralized alerting system powered by Microsoft technology developed specifically for this program, Internet Fraud Alert will quickly inform companies about compromised credentials, allowing them to take the appropriate action to help protect their customers,” the software giant said in a statement.
The launch follows the revelation earlier this week that a quarter of people in the UK have fallen victim to online scams, with the average victim losing over £285.

HTTPS Everywhere is a Firefox extension produced as a collaboration between The Tor Project and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. It encrypts your communications with a number of major websites. Many sites on the web offer some limited support for encryption over HTTPS, but make it difficult to use. For instance, they may default to unencrypted HTTP, or fill encrypted pages with links that go back to the unencrypted site. The HTTPS Everywhere extension fixes these problems by rewriting all requests to these sites to HTTPS.

Scottish studio Realtime Worlds, creator of Crackdown, has caused some controversy in the videogames media by embargoing reviews of its forthcoming online title APB until ten days after its US release, with some journalists querying the motives behind the move.
The MMO, developed by some of the creators of the original GTA, launches on June 26 in America, and June 29 in the UK. However, in an email to journalists concerning beta access, Realtime Worlds required that all reviews be withheld until July 6.
"Before finalising reviews, we want you to experience the full, rich experience of APB as it is meant to be seen," stated the message. "We want you to see wild customer customisations, player progression and clans making an impact on the living breathing city of San Paro.
"This key code also therefore grants you, along with our pre-order customers, VIP early access before the official launch day. June 26th in North America and June 28th in Europe. The review embargo is Tuesday, 6th July at 8am UK time."
While reviews are often under embargo until the day of release, to set one after consumers may purchase the title is relatively rare.
The story was broken by PC gaming site Rock, Paper, Shotgun, which questioned Realtime Worlds' motive - whether it was to ensure reviewers had allotted sufficient time to the review, or if the company was concerned about critical word of mouth impressions from beta testers.
"If [the latter] is their reason," said co-founder John Walker, "then they are attempting to silence criticism of their commercially released product, preventing consumers from receiving appropriate purchasing advice."
The site also surmised that that embargo would not stop readers and fansites posting their opinions come release day. APB's Key To The City public beta event - for which hundreds of thousands of players worldwide will have access - commences on June 12.
GamesIndustry.biz contacted Realtime Worlds for comment, but the company had yet to provide one by the time of publishing.

City of the Daleks, the first episode in a free series of downloadable Doctor Who adventure games, saw 524,299 download requests in its first 12 days of availability, announced the BBC today.
It is one of four short, casual-orientated games tying in to the current television series, developed by Sheffield studio Sumo Digital. The game boasts the vocal talents of stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan.
"Matt Smith has conquered space, now he's conquering cyberspace," said Steven Moffat, head writer and executive producer of Doctor Who. "The way the games capture the look and feel of the TV series is amazing.
"Matt Smith walks like a drunken giraffe on-screen and also in-game - it's a virtuoso virtual performance, and one I'm delighted is proving to be so popular. Just worried I won't get any writing done, what with playing the game all the time. Half a million download requests in 12 days - amazing."
"To say we're thrilled that we've received in excess of half a million download requests within the first 12 days is an understatement," add Simon Nelson, head of BBC Multiplatform in Vision. "The project has been a real labour of love from the whole Doctor Who and multiplatform team, so we're delighted the reaction has been so strong. The response has been tremendous."
The TV show's website also saw its visits increase by 67 per cent during the game's week of release. A second episode of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games will be unveiled on June 22.

Rumors of a Fallout MMO have been swirling for years, made all the more credible by hints from the legal battle between Bethesda and Interplay over licensing for the franchise. Now, Interplay has quietly created a teaser website for Fallout Online, offering beta sign-ups. Quoting Massively:
"Currently, there isn't much there, just a brief glimpse at a workshop desk with various Fallout references to the Master, Brahmin, and Nuka-Cola before a form obscures the screen. ... It looks legit, too: Interplay is promoting Fallout Online from their main website, and the new teaser site is indeed registered to Interplay Entertainment Corp."

The notebook market grew by value in the first quarter of this year, despite volumes dipping slightly.
Latest data from DisplaySearch reveals that in Q1 total notebook sales grew to $31.1bn, the largest single quarter since Q3 2008 when notebook average selling prices (ASPs) were more than 20 per cent higher than today. Although the average selling price for notebooks, they increased for every other category, with double-digit jumps for mini-note PC/tablet and ultra portable devices.
ASPs in the tablet sector were not impacted by Apple’s iPad as the product was not available in Q1. Rather, the introduction of new models with more features and second-generation CPUs helped to push up set prices and increase revenue in this category. In the ultra-portable market, a new crop of products that were launched in and around CES in January helped push revenues up by six per cent quarter on quarter. However, they were still below 2009 levels.
The positive year-on-year revenue growth in Q1 2010 was a result of very strong mini-note PC/tablet sales in Latin America and Asia Pacific, as well as continued growth in China and North America. Shipments of partable class notebook PCs surged YOY in Asia Pacific, China and Latin America. Meanwhile, shipments of desktop replacement class notebook PCs surged in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Japan.
Shipment growth in the mini-note PC/tablet category exceeded the average for the notebook market as a whole, but it appears that the momentum is shifting from mini-note PCs to tablets. In Q4 ’09 there were no consumer-orientated tablets in the market,a nd the devices that did exist were targeted at small, vertical markets. In Q1 2010 Apple shipped almost 700,000 iPads into the channel, accounting for 6.5 per cent of all tablets. In the first two months of Q2, the company sold more than two milion iPads.
“The last quarter of 2007 heraled the birth of the mini-note PC (netbook),” said John F Jacobs, director of Notebook Market Research at DisplaySearch. “Q1 2010 signalled the birth of the slate PC and possibly by extension the end of the notebook. Apple has ported their successful iPhone app business model to the iPad. Android-based phones followed in their footsteps and will surely do the same with slates. The result will be that buyers of slates will be able to take advantage of this a la carte software model.”

A solid third-party app ecosystem is going to be absolutely critical to Windows Phone 7's commercial success -- and Microsoft clearly knows that, having spent nearly as much (if not more) energy talking to developers since the platform's announcement than it has directly to potential end users. In particular, one area where Microsoft really wants to play ball (pardon the pun) is with a rock-sold gaming experience -- and to that end, it seems Redmond isn't being shy about putting its money where its mouth is. The rumor going around today is that Microsoft is reaching out to developers of popular iPhone games, offering cash in exchange for a Windows Phone 7 port; you might think that most of these devs would be totally down with dropping their games on a hot new platform with revenue potential, but the challenge is that WP7's development environment is different enough from the iPhone's to make porting a pretty big challenge. The dev that allegedly contacted PocketGamer.biz about the offer turned it down, saying the financial compensation was "substantial" but ultimately not enough for the amount of work he'd have to put into it -- so this might just be a question of how badly Microsoft wants to come roaring out of the gate with a great catalog of apps. They've certainly got the cash to make this happen if they decide to up the ante.

THQ's Warhammer 40,000 MMO E3 demo is intended to "shake up Blizzard," says core games VP, Danny Bilson. That's fightin' talk.
Speaking at an E3 analyst meeting last night, Bilson said that he wanted to show the WoW house that Warhammer 40k's doing a lot of stuff it's currently not.
"Some people thought 'wow, did we show too much?' I don't think so," he said at the meeting, after showing the first footage.
"I kind of wanted to shake up Blizzard a little bit and show that, because there's a lot of stuff they have to do to do some of the things we're doing there."
"They are awesome - don't get me wrong - but we're in the game."

A compromised website is serving an exploit of the bug in Windows' Help and Support Center, identified by a Google engineer last week, to hijack PCs running Windows XP. Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at antivirus vendor Sophos, declined to identify the site, saying only that it was dedicated to open source software. 'It's a classic drive-by attack,' said Cluley. The tactic was one of two that Microsoft said last week were the likely attack avenues. (The other was convincing users to open malicious e-mail messages.) The vulnerability was disclosed last Thursday by Google security engineer Tavis Ormandy, who also posted proof-of-concept attack code. Ormandy defended his decision to reveal the flaw only five days after reporting it to Microsoft. Cluley called Ormandy's action 'utterly irresponsible,' and in a blog post asked, 'Tavis Ormandy — are you pleased with yourself?'
