Star Wars: The Force Unleashed debuted in 2008 to less than stellar reviews, but sales of the game were strong. A sequel for the game is due out in October, and the developers spoke at length with the Guardian's Games blog about the improvements they've been working on. One of their priorities was adding depth to the combat system to make it less of a button-mash. "The team has completely redesigned all the familiar Force powers from the first title including Force Push and Force Grip, and has added a few newcomers including the potentially amusing Force Mind Trick that'll allow you to trick Storm Troopers into leaping from high ledges." Enemy AI is another area that's getting some love, and they're trying to make level design more open and less linear. The team's confidence in the changes they're making stems in part from much greater familiarity with their game-building tools. "Like its predecessor, Force Unleashed 2 will combine three third-party physics engines, Havok, Euphoria and Digital Molecular Matter, to provide cutting edge human animation, materials effects and authentic physical forces. ... 'Whenever you're building the first iteration [of a game series] and a brand new game engine at the same time, everything comes in hot and fast – we were literally figuring out how to get the most out of those three technologies all the way up to shipping. The DLC then helped us to learn more, and that knowledge has given us the biggest leap forward.'" A trailer for the game was released at E3.

Many people filed privacy complaints with the ESRB over Blizzard's recent (and afterward recanted) move to require the display of users' real life names on Blizzard's official forums. 961 of those complainants had their email addresses exposed in the ESRB's response." The response itself didn't go into the organization's thoughts on Blizzard's plan, but they explained to the Opposable Thumbs blog that anonymity isn't a huge concern to them, as long as users are given the opportunity to opt out.
"The role of the ESRB Privacy Online program is to make sure that member websites—those that display our seal on their pages — are compliant with an increasingly complex series of privacy protection laws and are offering a secure space for users to interact and do business online. ... But online privacy protection doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as anonymity. It's about making sure that websites collecting personal information from users are doing so not only in accordance with federal regulations but also with best practices for protecting individuals' personal information online.

A post at TechCrunch claims knowledge of large investments from Google into social game company Zynga, makers of FarmVille and Mafia Wars. The amount of money involved is not small — somewhere in the $100-200 million range — and could facilitate Google's expansion into the games market. Quoting:
"The investment was made by Google itself, not Google Ventures, say our sources, and it's a highly strategic deal. Zynga will be the cornerstone of a new Google Games to launch later this year, say multiple sources. Not only will Zynga's games give Google Games a solid base of social games to build on, but it will also give Google the beginning of a true social graph as users log into Google to play the games. And I wouldn't be surprised to see PayPal being replaced with Google Checkout as the primary payment option. Zynga is supposedly PayPal's biggest single customer, and Google is always looking for ways to make Google Checkout relevant."

An anonymous reader sends word of a proof-of-concept Google Chrome browser extension that steal users' login details. The developer, Andreas Grech, says that he is trying to raise awareness about security among end users, and therefore chose Chrome as a test-bed because of its reputation as the safest browser. Grech says he does not doubt that Chrome is a safe browser, but the point is that such an extension could be written for any of them. Grech says he has not uploaded his extension to the Google Chrome repository or anywhere else; but he has published enough details to allow others to reproduce the technique easily.

2K Games has whipped the curtain back on the Special Edition of Civilization V.
For 60 English pounds you'll take home a 176-page stiff-backed book of art, two CDs crammed with game music, a Making Of DVD documentary and five little metal Civilization V figurines. Don't try to eat those, they'll break your teeth.
This Special Edition is retail's answer to Steam's Digital Deluxe Edition. That contains exclusive maps, Babylonian leader Nebuchadnezzar II and the Making Of footage and soundtrack CDs.
The Digital Deluxe Edition costs £40 on Steam and can be pre-ordered now.
Sadly, we can't find any pictures of the Special Edition of Civilization V on any local retailers.

EA's and FIFA Manager developer Bright Future's hopes to win the loyalty of the UK audience in the next "two years or so".
Football Manager may rule the roost, but Bright Future's Gerald Koehler told Eurogamer that FIFA Manager has plenty of clout of its own.
"Football Manager is the main game in the UK, but FIFA Manager has around 95 per cent market share in Germany," the executive producer revealed.
"Players in this genre are really loyal - they stay with their game. It's really, really tough; you need such a long time to learn a game that loyalty has to grow step by step.
"But [boosting our UK market share] is our goal for the next two years or so."
Bright Future tried having outspoken Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho on the game's UK box once. That, surprisingly, "didn't work".
Koehler said the rivalry between FIFA Manager and Football Manager isn't the same as that between the FIFA series of games and Pro Evolution Soccer. That's partly because the two management games are "really different".
But that may also have something to do with Koehler feeling "absolutely no pressure" from EA. In fact, the benefits of the FIFA name stretch only as far as sharing artwork, official names, clubs and stadiums.
"We are one of the smaller franchises," Koehler admitted. "It's really a niche market and there aren't really a lot of games left.
"Some weeks ago I saw a top 20 chart from the UK from 15 years ago and nine games were football management sims! It's completely different today. Now only two are left."
One area of growth Koehler sees is online with browser games that have "pretty impressive numbers".
"Football Manager Live is probably the best you can do with a classic approach to the game for a limited number of people. There is very tough competition between the players and for every game you must have a loser, and they get very frustrated," said Koehler.
"But a different approach is now coming up on Facebook where you don't have too many frustrated people - everybody can build up something and have fun. And fun is more important than winning or having the best possible team or tactics and working very hard just to prepare for one match."
As for other areas for growth, Koehler's convinced "it makes no sense to take FIFA Manager and make a console version". "It's too tedious without a mouse," he said.
One avenue Koehler definitely won't pursue is comedy. UK gamers, he said, "take things very seriously".
"Before I worked for EA I made On the Ball. It was a game that tried to catch the silly side of football," revealed Koehler. "A lot of the fun in the game was lost in translation. In Germany we had lots of pretty funny things like witches brewing potions for use at half-time. Every funny event in real-life was put in the game. When a player injured themselves in a strange way we played on that in game.
"Today we can't do these things because the UK version scored between 20 and 30 per cent. The UK take things very seriously," he chastised. "Some things work in one country but not in another."
FIFA Manager 11 will be released in the UK on 29th October. A demo will precede the game by "two or three weeks".

If you submitted an application to take part in the closed beta for Star Wars: The Old Republic, you might want to check your inbox. The first wave of invites were recently sent out to a select few North American applicants, while future waves of invites will be expanded to potential Force-wielders in other territories.
If you haven't applied yet, you can still try to get into future waves by dropping the pertinent info on the game's official site. If you did manage to get into the first wave, then congratulations. We're all really happy for you. No, seriously. Have loads of fun.

"This is gonna change the world." Since our E3 meeting with OnLive CEO Steve Perlman and Joe Bentley, director of games & media development, wasn't filmed, we have no way to convey to you the absolute sincerity with which Bentley said these words. He further assured us, "I left a very successful startup to do this."
Indeed he did -- three years ago, Bentley quit his "architect" job at outsourcing firm LiveOps (where he built software) for OnLive, after seeing parent company Rearden Labs' Mova motion capture technology. And now? Now he's busy helping manage the launch and continued growth of OnLive. He's also busy trying to convince us of the service's promise in the coming months and years.

Earlier this week, Blizzard announced that they were going to be implementing changes in their official forums (for StarCraft II when it launched, and for WoW prior to Cataclysm) that would require users to post under their real names, as part of the Real ID system. After perusing nearly 14,000 European and 50,000 US forum posts, the majority of which decried this move with various levels of vehemence, it looks like Blizzard has given in to the pressure. From the official statement: 'We've been constantly monitoring the feedback you've given us, as well as internally discussing your concerns about the use of real names on our forums. As a result of those discussions, we've decided at this time that real names will not be required for posting on official Blizzard forums.' Not that this doesn't leave room for them to re-implement this at a later date, but that's a pretty definite 'no.' It was clear they were going to take criticism, but the size of the backlash was impressive. It seems likely Blizzard simply wasn't expecting that level of antipathy toward their new policy.

If your gut response to the Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch mod for Doom 2 revealed last November was one of overwhelming desire, prepare to be satisfied. A demo for MM8BDM was recently released by its creator, Mike Hill, and is now downloadable for free through the mod's official website.
The download comes with four pixelated maps, five character skins and over 10 different weapon attachments based on actual powers from the Mega Man series. Unfortunately, these weapons can be picked up from set locations on each map -- we're not sure we'll appreciate them as much as we did when we were forced to pry them from the cold, dead hands of a bested Robot Master.

InfoWorld's Peter Wayner takes a first look at Firefox 4 Beta 1 and sees several noteworthy HTML5 integrations that bring Firefox 4 'that much closer to taking over everything on the desktop.' Beyond the Chrome-like UI, Firefox 4 adds several new features that 'open up new opportunities for AJAX and JavaScript programmers to add more razzle-dazzle and catch up with Adobe Flash, Adobe AIR, Microsoft Silverlight, and other plug-ins,' Wayner writes. 'Firefox 4 also adds an implementation of the Websockets API, a tool for enabling the browser and the server to pass data back and forth as needed, making it unnecessary for the browser to keep asking the server if there's anything new to report.

A new patch for the StarCraft II beta is available to download in Europe, suggesting that the second phase of the game's beta test is just around the corner.
The first phase of beta ended last month, with this second phase due to last "a couple of weeks" before the game launches at the end of this month.
We're patching our client right now, and the patch notes tell us to expect all Quick Match modes (1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 and Free For All); all AI difficulties; co-operative matchmaking versus AI; and cross-game social features between StarCraft II and World of Warcraft.
You can find the full patch notes for Patch 16 at the StarCraft II beta forum.
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, the first of three planned StarCraft II relases, is out on 27th July for PC and Mac. It's so close we can taste it.

Mozilla has released the first Beta of Firefox 4, the next major version of the popular web browser. Apart from the new 'Chromified' tabs-on-top UI, there are many major improvements in performance and HTML5 support. This release also adds support for the new WebM video format. Other changes include faster DOM and CSS performance, improved UI responsiveness, hardware 2D acceleration, experimental WebGL support, and better JavaScript performance (though this beta does not include the new JaegerMonkey JIT engine). More details on the Mozilla blog.

Twitter's battle to keep the microblogging service from falling over is having a dire affect on third-party Twitter apps. Users of Twitter-related apps such as TweetDeck, Echofon and even Twitter's own mobile software have complained of a lack of updates, after the company imposed strict limits on the number of times third-party apps can access the service. Over the past week, Twitter has reduced the number of API calls from 350 to 175 an hour. At one point last week, that number was temporarily reduced to only 75. A warning on TweetDeck's support page states that users 'should allow TweetDeck to ensure you do not run out of calls, although with such a small API limit, your refresh rates will be very slow.

The internet is raging this afternoon over Blizzard's plans to put World of Warcraft users' real names on their official forum posts. The bastards.
The Diablo developer's revealed that, if you post on the version of its forum that will launch with the new StarCraft, your real name, rather than your username, will be shown.
It seems like Blizzard's looking to turn Battle.net into more of a social network than a competitive matchmaking service, as it says itself:
"It's important to us to create a new and different kind of online gaming environment - one that's highly social, and which provides an ideal place for gamers to form long-lasting, meaningful relationships. All of our design decisions surrounding Real ID - including these forum changes - have been made with this goal in mind."
Our colleagues at PC Gamer UK call the plans "foolhardy" and "asking for trouble".
"The gamers that live and breathe their service, at every level, from the bottom, to the super-hardcore pro-gamers, simply don't identify themselves by their real name when they play," the mag says. "They live by their identity or handle. Battle.net isn't a social network. It's a fight club.
"According to Blizzard's announcement, all StarCraft II and Cataclysm forums will display your real name. That means even the tech support forums. And the roleplaying forums. I'm not sure why I need to identify myself when I'm trying to figure out why Warcraft crashes. Or when I'm pretending to be a druid."
One angry reader said of the plans: "I don't want all the world to know my real name. More social it might be but it's very intrusive to my privacy... In this day and age when most social websites are being pushed for more privacy functions they decide to open it up in one of the worst possible way."
Frankly, we don't give a monkey's who knows our real names. We post stuff on the internet all day with our names on the bottom. But we can see how this could be a problem for MMO fans.
Any WoW players out there care to offer their two pence on this issue?

We remember well the first time we managed to put an accelerometer in our possession to good use: back when the MacBook Pros started shipping with them as sudden motion sensors to protect the hard drive, someone hooked up some light saber noises to the tilt motion. A few months later we were pretending to make light saber noises with the Wii, and then the iPhone came along and democratized the accelerometer-based light saber noise for all of humanity. Next up? The browser. Firefox 3.6 already supports this capability, and now Chromium is getting some early work in that direction as well -- and with the browser-as-OS that Google's Chrome OS represents, Chromium's support of this feature is welcome news indeed. We hear that light saber noise-producing low fat snacks are next on the docket!

Blizzard is inviting short story submissions for its 2010 Global Writing Contest.
Stories should be 2500 to 7500 words long, written in English, and set in the Warcraft, StarCraft or Diablo universe. You have until 23rd August to submit your entries.
The grand prize winner will win a trip to the developer's headquarters in Irvine, southern California to meet the Blizzard writing staff, as well as a rare collectable (either a Diablo III diorama or a Warcraft Frostmourne replica sword).
Seven-runners up will receive complete sets of Diablo, Warcraft and StarCraft Archives - which collect the official novels set in each universe - signed by Blizzard lore guru Chris Metzen as well as the cover artists and writing staff.
You can read last year's winner at the Blizzard site for an idea of what the judges are looking for.
Submissions must be in .DOC format. Sending musty tomes is discouraged. "Tomes, no matter the quality or quantity of must they contain, will not be accepted as valid contest entries," warns the FAQ.
