Today Channel 4 launches a new educational game recreating a pivotal battle in the second world war.
The game, created by UK-based outfit Fish in a Bottle, consists of a squadron of 34 polish fighter planes which wreak havoc on the Luftwaffe.
This element of the war changed the course of history, and therefore is deemed a vital piece of education.
Battle for Britain allows the player to sit in and fly a Hurricane plane, to become part of the 303 Squadron.
Based upon the diary entries of real participants, the game’s missions explore victories and defeats as well as the eventual betrayal of the allies and its major effect on the war.
Combining archive, documentary footage, 3D rendering and animation, the player can experience the events in the life of an RAF pilot.
By the player being in control of their own plane and facing the enemy’s fleet, it allows them to feel the emotional fluctuations of being in the RAF.
During a multiplayer mode, the player will pilot one of four fighters in pre-scripted missions, either with random players or by inviting their friends. In the squadrons they can fly a variety of planes from the Spitfire to the Mustang.
By the end of the Battle of Britain, the 303 Squadron was the highest scoring RAF squadron. Due to this, Fish in a Bottle has made each mission finish with the totals to see which pilot has scored this most.
The educational game, has been described as ‘high-octane’ and is said to ‘challenge even the most battle hardy player’ as well as being a beneficial lesson about one of the most dangerous chapters of World War II.

England match against Slovenia caused a number of ISPs to reevaulate the impact of football events on their networks after seeing a large increase in internet.
According to Thinkbroadband, the surge in usage was caused by the match taking place within office hours for most people.
Easynet Connect reported that its business broadband services saw a 226 per cent increase in web traffic compared to a normal day, while another business broadband provider Fuidata, saw it net traffic double as soon as the game started.
Meanwhile the London internet exchange point LONAP doubled its traffic levels and set its own record of 29.5Gbps, and according to the BBC, the total number of streams totalled 800,000.

Blizzard has teamed up with Korean Airlines to brand airliners ahead of the upcoming launch for the keenly anticipated real-time strategy game.
With less than a month to go to the launch of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, Korean Air customers flying between July and December have the chance to take their flight in either the Boeing 747-400 or the Boeing 737-900 emblazoned with the game logo and main character of Jim Raynor.
As the competition gaming tour-de-force, the original StarCraft had an important role to play in the massive 'pro gaming' and net gaming cafe scene in South Korea so such a marketing move is certainly less unusual there than it might be elsewhere.
However it does serve as a timely reminder of just how big of a release StarCraft II is expected to be world-wide. Industry analyst Michael Pacter had said previously: "I think they'll sell 5-6 million units quickly, 9-10 million eventually" . If such sales materialise it would make StarCraft II one of the best selling PC games of all time. The original StarCraft has so far sold 11 million copies, making it 4th largest selling PC game of all time behind the Sims, the Sims II and World of Warcraft respectively.
The airline itself considers the campaign as a strategic move to market itself to younger people. "eSports is an established part of youth culture all around the world," said Yong-won Suh, executive VP of Korean Air.
"We look forward to positioning ourselves as a global airline that appeals to the younger generation by operating airplanes wrapped with StarCraft II images and celebrating the launch of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty," he added.
Star Craft II: Wings of Liberty is due for release on PC and Mac on the 27th of July.

Hemisphere Games analyzes the sales numbers for their Linux port of Osmos and ask themselves, 'Is it worth porting games to Linux?' The short, simple answer is 'yes.' Breakdown and details in the post."
A few other interesting details: the port took them about two man-months of work, the day they released for Linux was their single best sales day ever, and they got a surprising amount of interest from Russia and Eastern Europe. Their data only reflects sales through their website, and they make the point that "the lack of a strong Linux portal makes it a much less 'competitive' OS for commercial development." Hopefully someday the rumored Steam Linux client will help to solve that.

Hi-Rez Studios is dropping the optional subscription fee for its massively multiplayer sci-fi shooter, Global Agenda.
Previously, much of the online game was playable as a standard one-off retail purchase, but you had to pay a subscription to access some features, including the large scale Agency-versus-Agency metagame.
From now on, all features will be free to play, and the game will support itself by selling content updates as optional paid expansions. The first of these, Sandstorm, will be offered for free, however.
There's also a 33 per cent discount on the game on Steam until 5th July, as part of the download service's summer sale, which brings it in at £16.74.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun reports that upcoming action MMOG APB: All Points Bulletin will use in-game audio advertisements as part of its business model. The number of ads you hear will be limited: "you'll only hear an ad when you go into a new zone, and that's only once every three hours." Nevertheless, some gamers are upset that these ads will be included on top of APB's already unusual payment plans. The game is set for release next Tuesday. Producer Jesse Knapp says of Realtime Worlds' goals for APB, "We looked at other online action games, and we saw things we felt could be better. Only 12 to 32 players in a match, bad connection due to peer-to-peer, dead cities, way too much time in lobbies, things like that. So what we set out to do was to make a game that has that online player vs. player action game experience in a large city with other players around, no lobbies, dynamic matchmaking, dedicated servers, great experience, and that's been one of the driving factors of APB from the very beginning." CVG recently previewed the game.

From an interview Bitmob conducted with Civilization 5 Lead Designer Jon Shafer: 'You can import Civ 4 maps into the world builder and convert them into Civ 5 maps, including all the units and cities and stuff on it — the conversion process will just do that for you automatically. We're hoping that the first week Civ 5 is out, people will use that function and port all of the Civ 4 stuff over to Civ 5, so everything will be out there already.

If Steve Ballmer's still pumped eight months later, there's a good reason -- Windows 7 has reportedly sold its 150 millionth copy, just two months after crossing the 100 million mark. If you run the numbers -- and we have -- that translates to roughly seven licenses sold per second since launch, a very convenient number for Microsoft to tout in their marketing communications from here on out. Perhaps execs can celebrate with a nice Windows 7 Whopper, topped with a fresh .dll pickle.

YouTube always has had a way with pranks. Some time in the last hour, the world's largest video portal activated a new button on some videos that looks like a tiny soccer ball. Clicking it will activate an endless, incredibly annoying sound that sounds vaguely like a swarm of insects. Or, for anyone who has been watching the World Cup, like the dreaded vuvuzela — an instrument commonly played in South Africa at football (soccer) games. South Africa is, of course, the host country for this year's World Cup, and fans watching the games have been subjected to the vuvuzela's mindless drone for hours on end. The noise is so annoying that television networks have taken measures to filter it out, and guides have popped up showing viewers how to block it from their TV sets and computers. I'm not seeing the button show up on all videos, but it is definitely appearing on some clips that aren't soccer-related."

Microsoft has announced a suite of new functions for search engine Bing focused on entertainment - specifically music, games, television and movies.
According to comments on the official Bling Community blog 76 per cent of people use search to find entertainment online - but according to Microsoft only 10 per cent have a regular trusted destination.
The site now features both enhanced functionality for searching for entertainment, as well as a new portal at www.bing.com/entertainment.
"In the gaming realm, people go to the web for a few key tasks. They want to choose which games to buy, become a better gamer by finding cheats and walkthroughs, and find and play casual games online in a safe and easy manner," said Bing senior vice president Yusuf Mehdi.
The front page for www.bing.com/entertainment currently advertises links to walkthroughs and cheats for Super Mario Galaxy 2 and 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum, linking through to websites such as IGN and G4. What may be links to reviews do not work at time of press.
Also on the prominent front info box is a link to play PopCap's Zuma's Revenge, hosted inline on Bing.com itself. Working in conjunction with Microsoft Games almost 100 other casual games are currently available from within Bing. Social features are also included to allow friend invites via social networks such as Facebook.
"We see a great opportunity to help customers make important entertainment decisions - from deciding what movie to buy or see, which TV shows to watch online or on your TV, what music to listen to, how to find and safely play your favorite casual games," Mehdi.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 development team has announced the availability of the third IE9 platform preview release on the IE blog. Dean Hachamovitch writes, 'The third Platform Preview of Internet Explorer 9, available now, continues the deep work around hardware acceleration to enable the same standards-based markup to run faster. This is the latest installment of the rhythm we started in March, delivering platform preview releases approximately every eight weeks and listening to developers. You'll see more performance, same markup, and hardware accelerated HTML5.' The announcement focuses on cross browser compatibility noting that when 'developers spend less time re-writing their sites to work across browsers they have more time to create amazing experiences on the web'. Curiously, however, the video embedded in the page only works in some browsers. Dear Microsoft, IE9 supports many royalty-free, web compatible formats out of the box (HTML, CSS, WOFF, PNG, and the like) so why not at least one more?

Microsoft has hinted at a renewed drive towards gaming, following the release of Fable 3 on Xbox and PC.
In an internal document leaked to Kotaku, which takes the form of a preparatory Q&A sheet for company spokespeople, Microsoft poses itself the question: “Does Fable III on Windows signal a larger reinvestment by Microsoft in PC gaming? How is this different from the previous times you've announced a reinvestment in PC gaming and not quite come through with a robust offering?”
Many observers are taking the question as a tacit admission of a failure to follow up on hit Microsoft PC gaming titles like Age of Empires and Freelancer, opting instead to concentrate on Xbox releases.
Unfortunately, the standard company response is the usual vague PR fare, stopping short of giving any precise details but does hint at further releases later this year.
“In terms of revenue, Windows is far and away the largest gaming platform in the world, so it's an incredibly important part of Microsoft's business,” reads the standard format answer.
“From core games like Fable III to casual, social and Facebook titles, more gaming happens on Windows than anywhere else. Windows 7 is a world-class gaming platform, and you can bet Microsoft has a vested interest in using it as a platform for amazing first party content. Fable III on Windows as well as Xbox 360 this holiday is a great first step, and we'll have more news for you later this summer.”

Mozilla Firefox 3.6.4 went to general release today. The big new feature in this release is out-of-process plugins (OOPP). This means things like Flash, Java, QuickTime, etc., all run in separate processes, so when Flash decides to crash, it won't take your browser out with it. If Flash starts consuming all the CPU it can find, you can kill it without nuking your browser session. I've been using this feature since it was in the 'nightly build' stage, and it was still more stable than 3.6.3, just because Flash was isolated."
And reader Trailrunner7 supplies another compelling reason to download 3.6.4:
"Security researcher Michal Zalewski has identified a problem with the way Firefox handles links that are opened in a new browser window or tab, enabling attackers to inject arbitrary code into the new window or tab while still keeping a deceptive URL in the browser's address bar. The vulnerability, which Mozilla has fixed in version 3.6.4, has the effect of tricking users into thinking that they're visiting a legitimate site while instead sending arbitrary attacker-controlled code to their browsers."

KingofGnG writes with this snippet from Sir Arthur's Den, which will make my desktop computer sad:
"Soon another technology that in past years dominated the always changing universe of computer hardware will bite the dust. That's the decision by Intel, the merciless executioner of standards that the company itself imposes on the market. In upcoming months it will end official support for the PCI bus. Developed by the chipmaker in 1993, the PCI Local Bus standard was implemented on all motherboards for x86 and compatible platforms until 2004, the year it passed the baton to the younger and faster PCI Express technology."

Just a fortnight after release, Zynga's wild west-themed alternative to FarmVille has attracted a quite staggering 5.2 million daily active users.
FrontierVille offers a distinctly casual alternative to Red Dead Redemption's western theme; something that has obviously struck a chord with Facebook's huge number of users.

The release of Fable III on PC heralds yet another fresh dawn for Microsoft and its commitment to Games for Windows.
That seems to be the suggestion from a leaked internal Q&A document obtained by Kotaku which reads as follows:
Q: Does "Fable III" on Windows signal a larger reinvestment by Microsoft in PC gaming? How is this different from the previous times you've announced a reinvestment in PC gaming and not quite come through with a robust offering?
A: In terms of revenue, Windows is far and away the largest gaming platform in the world, so it's an incredibly important part of Microsoft's business. From core games like "Fable III" to casual, social and Facebook titles, more gaming happens on Windows than anywhere else. Windows 7 is a world-class gaming platform, and you can bet Microsoft has a vested interest in using it as a platform for amazing first party content. "Fable III" on Windows as well as Xbox 360 this holiday is a great first step, and we'll have more news for you later this summer.
Microsoft’s commitment to PC gaming has been a matter of debate for some time now. Though the firm has repeatedly sworn its allegiance to the platform, it has time and time again been accused of falling short on delivering.
Despite a string of bosses for the Games for Windows push, some seemingly heavy-duty revamps and even a drive into the Games-On-Demand market, the service has continued to be slated by users and trials far behind rival offerings such as Steam.

Three managers of a Spanish software provider have been arrested after allegedly selling poisoned software to over 1000 customers over 12 years.
According to El Pais, the un-named company was selling bespoke software to small and medium size business clients, which contained ‘errors programmed to fail on a specific date.’ The client would then have to contact the company for technical support and if they didn’t have a service contract, they’d have to pay or be coerced in to purchasing a contract.
The Spanish Guardia also said that those customers who did not purchase a contract would have further errors programmed in to their system to be introduced at a later date.
The alleged scam was reported anonymously and has led to the creation of Operation Cordoba – a multi-agency drive to target cybercrime in a number of Spanish provinces.
