Digital pre-owned games retailer Green Man Gaming has announced the official launch of its new PC games downloads website at www.greenmangaming.com
The site allows users to trade-in their digitally downloaded games, with over 26 publishers already on board and over 500 titles supported.
"We are delighted to have launched with a penny game sale and are amazed by the response from customers across the globe. As the service went live we were surprised by the initial rush of customers from Japan and India," said COO Gian Luzio.
"We launched with a small selection of titles to ensure it worked and I'm glad to report that everything has run smoothly and we will be adding more titles and fantastic sales promotions over the next few days," he added.
Green Man Gaming first announced its intention to sell pre-owned digital games in January this year, with GamesIndustry.biz subsequently conducting an exclusive interview with Luzio and CEO Paul Sulyok.

NEC has announced that its video content identification technology has been incorporated in the upcoming Mpeg 7 video standard, allowing for each video frame to have its own signature, meaning that even minute changes to the file such as adding subtitles, watermarks or dogtags, and of course cutting out adverts, will alter the overall signature of the video. According to NEC this will allow the owners of the video to automatically 'detect illegal copies' and 'prevent illegal upload of video content' without their consent. NEC also claims that its technology will do away with the current manual checking by members of the movie industry and ISPs to spot dodgy videos.

Twitter has fixed a major bug that saw many users of the service appear to lose all of their followers and friends.
The problem began when a flaw was uncovered that allowed people to force others to "follow" them on the site.
People who typed "accept" followed by a person's Twitter name forced the user to be added to their list of followers.
The hack was quickly passed around the social network with many people using it to force celebrities to follow them.
It could have easily allowed spammers to insert messages into thousands of accounts.
Web flaw
Twitter quickly closed the loophole but was forced to temporarily reset many accounts as it cleaned up the damage. The reset made it look like many users had no followers and were also following no one.
"We identified and resolved a bug that permitted a user to 'force"' other users to follow them," the site said in a blog post.
People were still able to use the service during the disruption.
Twitter allows users to post messages - known as tweets - up to 140 characters long.
People can see what others are writing by choosing to "follow" them. However, unlike many social networks, both parties do not have to reciprocate the friendship.
The new bug allowed many people to force celebrities, such as Lady Gaga, to follow them by simply typing "accept @ladygaga".
This would make it appear that Lady Gaga had chosen to follow them and would also inject a user's tweets into the singer's feeds.
The flaw only worked on the website and not through third-party software used to access the service, such as Tweetdeck.
Twitter has exploded in popularity since 2007, when it was launched, and now has more than 100 million users.
News of the flaw follows the discovery of a recent high-profile security bug at Facebook, another poster child of the social web.
The exploit - now fixed - exploited the site's privacy settings and allowed users to eavesdrop on their friends' live chats and see their pending friend requests.

EA has tasked Playfish with creating a Facebook game based on the super-lucrative FIFA franchise.
More or less nothing is known of the game as of yet, though EA Sports boss Peter Moore said of it: “Our FIFA products connect fans from all over the world who share a common passion for the sport, and soon our partnership with Playfish will allow us to bring the FIFA brand to the growing Facebook community with a new game called FIFA Superstars.
“Leveraging our football gaming knowledge and marrying it with the social gaming expertise of our partners at Playfish is sure to provide more great opportunities to bring hundreds of millions of new fans to compete against their friends to win the FIFA World Cup through an engaging interactive football experience.”
EA acquired Playfish in November 2009 in a deal rumoured to be worth in excess of $250m.
This won’t be the first title to take success on consoles and transfer it to emerging market models. Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online did the same earlier this year and has proved a sound success for the publisher.

Reports are suggesting that Zynga could be considering removing its games from Facebook as it establishes its own social gaming space. The speculation comes in the wake of what many are sighting as a breakdown in relations between the world's biggest social network and the sometimes controversial developer behind Farmville and Mafia Wars.
According to TechCrunch, it has received and verified an email from an anonymous source that claims that, thanks in part to Facebook's enforcing of the Facebook Credits system, Zynga is ready to launch Zynga Live. Apparently Zynga CEO Mark Pincus confirmed in a meeting that the forthcoming service would take the form of a social gaming network.
According to the email: "Facebook and Zynga has been negotiating on Facebook Credits and the talks turned for the worst. In the negotiation process, Facebook shut off Zynga’s feeds and threatened to shut down games. Zynga in the process threatened to completely leave Facebook and prepared to do so in the previous upcoming weeks".
The relationship the two companies share is far from symbiotic, despite the fact that both have a great deal to gain through cooperation. Aside from Facebook Credits, there's been the controversy of what some claimed was dishonest advertising, and Zynga's move to make Farmville playable outside of Facebook.

Facebook has lost a substantial amount of its game users since altering its notification system, with FarmVille alone recording a dip of 4.4 million players.
Gamasutra first reported the story, noting that 18 of the top 25 Facebook games lost players in April – with 12 of those games losing at least a million users.
MindJolt Games took the biggest losses, dropping almost eight million gamers in all over several titles.
Facebook made the alterations, limiting the amount of user-base expanding notifications applications can send users and their friends, in order to make their titles more “streamlined, clear and less spammy.”

Cryptic Studios and Atari are taking a two-fold approach to increasing the player base for their spacefaring MMO, Star Trek Online: First, potential subscribers can now download the game and play through the tutorial and first mission for free. Though they'll have an unlimited amount of time to tool around in their Federation vessel, players will have to purchase the full game to gain access to STO's other offerings.
In addition, former subscribers can play for free this weekend, and check out the new content that's been added as part of the game's first "Season" of updates. The "Welcome Back Weekend" ends Monday at 10 a.m. PST, so we suggest applicable parties should hop online ASAP, so as not to waste any potential Trekking time.

WarhammerAlliance.com (run for the last five years as one of the leading fansites for the MMORPG Warhammer Online) is being sued by Games Workshop for the use of the 'Warhammer' name, 'cybersquatting' and 'unfair competition.' This lawsuit is yet another in Games Workshop's disturbing pattern of suing their fans and hobbyists, this time going after a legitimate fansite for their MMORPG franchise. The full complaint (PDF) has been posted online.

Blizzard Entertainment has announced pricing and subscription options for fully localised Latin American Spanish versions of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.
The first instalment of StarCraft II was recently announced for an almost worldwide release on July 27, although analysts later suggested a Chinese launch was not likely until 2011.
The version of the game to go on sale in Mexico will be priced at 299 pesos ($23), while the Argentinean version will cost 119 pesos ($31) and the Chilean version 13,900 pesos ($26).
The Latin American versions of the game will include six months of access to the StarCraft II single-player campaign and multiplayer online modes via Battle.net.
To play beyond that time users will have to pay for either a 30 or 60 day subscription, although specific pricing for these has not yet been announced. A one-time unlimited access version of the game, priced similarly to the standard $59.99 U.S. release, will also be made available.
"One of our design goals for StarCraft II was to make it accessible to a wide range of players, from beginners to veterans," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard.
"The same is true with regard to our pricing options - we want to make sure players have the flexibility to experience the game according to their own preferences and play style."

2K Games today announced that Civilization V will be using Steamworks for online matchmaking, automated updates, downloadable content and DRM for the game. Steam's Civ V store page is also available now, revealing some new information about the game. There will be an 'In-Game Community Hub' for online matchmaking, communication, and for sharing scenarios between players. While including Steamworks might put some people off, it might also indicate better online gameplay than in the previous Civilization games, where it was almost impossible to have a good game without playing with just friends.

Microsoft is “quietly confident” about the imminent launch of Office 2010, after clocking millions of beta downloads and receiving positive feedback from retail and reseller partners.
The company has tied down the release date for volume sales to May 12th, with the general release scheduled for June. With seven million beta downloads currently registered, Microsoft’s head of Office, Chris Adams, told PCR demand has smashed its own expectations.
“We’re certainly surpassing all the targets that we set ourselves for the testing phases, so it’s really great that there’s that amount of interest,” he commented. “I think that the interest in beta is a good forward indicator for consumer demand once the product is released.”
The company is also keen to highlight the cloud possibilities for the new suite, and has underlined the benefits that these new methods can bring to the business sector.
“We’ve been hearing some fairly consistent themes from our partners. It’s all about improving their business without having to increase or decrease their headcount, so it’s all about efficiency,” said partner engagement group manager Tanya Shirlow.
“Customers seem to be cautiously optimistic; they want to see how they can grow business through the use of technology and, as far as we can see, that is where the opportunity exists for channel partners right now. With the extensive deployment of the beta and the confidence that our channel partners feel around the product, we’re quietly confident ourselves.”

The BBC is hoping to raise the awareness of the mainstream public about the importance of the gaming industry.
In an interview on Doctor Who: The Adventure Games, a free to download set of videogame episodes as an extension of the popular TV series, BBC Wales' Ian Tweedale talked about how the Doctor could go some way to remedying the problem:
"We think it's very important that the mainstream audiences are made aware of just how important the gaming industry is and I don't think they are fully aware of it. It's bigger than both TV and movies," said Tweedale.
"I think what we're trying to do in part is to ensure that people who have never put a toe in the water of gaming might have a go, because it's tied very much in with a key brand like Doctor Who."
"We do believe that the games industry is really important and we want to work with games companies like Sumo," he continued.
"It's also about the development of narrative forms, it is about developing a new drama format that's more interactive than we've been previously able to do.
"It just happens to be in an online environment but one of the key things is that it is 17 episodes in the series. I think it's right that we do explore how the narrative drama environment can develop in a new media environment as well."

Google's never been shy to make claims that Chrome is the fastest browser on the planet, but it's truly pulled out all the stops to drive that point home for its latest beta. Rather than rely on some simple benchmarks, Google decided to test Chome against some other things that are fast -- namely, a potato cannon, sound waves, and lightning. We won't spoil all the surprise for you, but you can rest assured that Chrome comes out looking pretty good, and that everything else gets a little messy. Head on past the break to check out the speed tests for yourself, as well as the requisite making-of video.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II has been given a 26th October release date.
That's a Tuesday, which means the UK may not get the game until Friday, 29th October, although Amazon.co.uk lists suggests the previous Friday, 22nd October, will be the big day. Activision told Eurogamer a European date was yet to be announced.
The date appeared on the official Force Unleashed II Facebook page alongside a witty "May the fourth" joke.
So far we've seen nothing beyond an appetite-whetter of a video for The Force Unleashed II. In it, Galen "Starkiller" Marek - the main character in the first game - takes on an enormous Rancor-eating beast inside an arena.
He uses double blue lightsabers - a colour traditionally favoured by Jedi - and Force Lightning, a skill preferred by the Sith. And the video contains the voices of both Darth Vader and Yoda.
How much can be read into those touches remains to be seen.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was released in autumn 2008. Main attractions were sumptuous visuals and the promise of immense Force powers - one level had Marek dragging a starship out of the sky and into the ground.

Facebook has fixed a security flaw that allowed users to eavesdrop on the live chats of their friends and see their pending friend requests.
The exploit used the site's privacy features - intended to protect a user - to expose the personal information.
With just a few clicks users could spy on their friends personal chat messages and see who had requested to join their network.
Facebook has temporarily removed its chat facility while it fixes the flaw.
The exploit - originally reported by the blog TechCrunch -worked via an option in privacy settings that allows people to preview their profiles as it would appear to their friends.
Prompt fix
But it was never intended to show others what their friends were actually doing.
"For a limited period of time, a bug permitted some users' chat messages and pending friend requests to be made visible to their friends by manipulating the "preview my profile" feature of Facebook privacy settings," Facebook said in a statement.
"When we received reports of the problem, our engineers promptly diagnosed it and temporarily disabled the chat function. We also pushed out a fix to take care of the visible friend requests which is now complete," it added.
The chat function will be turned back on "shortly" it said.
"For any organisation, whether you are a social networking site or not, privacy breaches are worrying," said Candid Wueest, security expert at Symantec.
"Unfortunately, this isn't the first privacy breach of its kind to plague a social networking site - other high profile sites have also been affected with similar problems."
He praised Facebook's quick response to the issue.
"Facebook has acted quickly in fixing the alleged flaw, whereas some social networking sites have been known to take days to fix issues reported," he said.

"We're pleased to be working with Facebook to integrate their platform with Battle.net to enhance the social-entertainment experience for our players," offered Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard.

Growth in the PC industry is going to come from independent retailers, rather than chains or supermarkets, a trade body has warned.
In a blog for PCR, Itacs chairman Matthew Woolley wrote: “It is not just us small indies that are feeling the pinch on hardware sales. Anyone can now type a quote into Google and find a better price – that is the way of the web. Are the vendors and distributors happy with just dealing with the supermarkets?
“My advice is to look after the little guy – we are where the growth is going to come from. The domestic market is big and getting bigger, and together we, the indies, will have a bigger voice.”
