BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic is the most expensive game ever created at EA.
The publisher's chief banker Eric Brown described the MMO as the "largest ever development project, period, in the history of the company".
He said a packaged game usually costs around $30m to make at EA, but "any MMO costs significantly more than that".
When asked by a member of the Wedbush Morgan Securities audience in New York today how the cost compared to World of Warcraft, Brown said Blizzard spent "$100 million, perhaps more" to ship the game in 2004.
"That's lifetime [research and development] to actually ship it and obviously then there's maintenance subsequent to ship and expansion packs," Brown added.
These days, WOW makes around $100m a month from subscriptions. EA no doubt hopes SWTOR will recoup costs in a similar fashion.
"MMOs are sizeable undertakings," quipped Brown.
EA is steering Star Wars: The Old Republic towards a spring 2011 release. Take that with a pinch of salt, as these things slip.

A new report from Games Industry indicates that MMO gamers in the United States paid $3.8 billion to play last year, with an analysis of five European countries bringing the total close to $4.5 billion USD. In America, the report estimated that payments for boxed content and client downloads amounted to a measly $400 million, while the subscriptions came to $2.38 billion. Hopefully that will fund some developer budgets for bigger and better MMOs yet to come. The study also found that roughly a quarter of the US population plays some form of MMO. Surely MMOs are shaping up to be a juicy industry, and a market that can satisfy people of all walks of life.

MySpace has told GamesIndustry.biz that it hopes that its concentrated push into games will emulate the success it's already achieved in the music business.
Speaking in an exclusive interview published today, co-president Mike Jones said that his goal is to have up to 60 per cent of users playing games on the social networking site within a year.
"Just as they use MySpace to discover and listen to music, I want them to use MySpace to discover and play games. It's an absolute big, big part of our mission," he said.
"For MySpace today, when we think about engagement on MySpace, we have about a billion minutes per month of engagement within games. People are spending about a billion minutes per month playing games."
Jones said the key to games on MySpace is virality and ensuring that users are confronted with gaming opportunities as soon as they log on to the site.
"There's a bunch of other bells and whistles that we could talk about that we're going to do within games, but the real pin for us is making sure we nail virality - so we're putting a lot of work behind that now. This first step we're taking today is about launching a whole new games gallery, making games a big part of the user experience, promoting it on user home pages, promoting it on sign-up.
"We're making sure that when users sign up to MySpace, on the first screen after sign-up they have recommendations, which include games and bands - at the same time. That's getting the user initially seeded with the content."
MySpace intends to feed back gaming data to developers to enable them to better create games and understand gameplay habits, with Jones stating that at this point he's not worried about MySpace making money from games - so long as developers can flourish.
"We're going to talk a lot about APIs, and the way that we're going to give data back to developers, so they can control and grow their audience bases on MySpace.
"What I would guess you'd find is that a year from now you'll be finding 50-60 per cent of our audience playing games every single day. Today it's close to 20-30 per cent, so even from a flat audience rate for MySpace of 100 million-plus users, I think we have a 2-3 times level of growth that we can see within gameplay on MySpace."

March 10th, 2010, 22:57 Posted By: wraggster
Software revenues for the PC games market rose by 3 per cent last year to a total of $13.1 billion, according to the new 2009 Horizons Report from the PC Gaming Alliance (PCGA).
The non-profit corporation, which includes members such as Microsoft, Intel, AMD, Epic, NVIDIA, GameStop and Dell, sources data from every region in the world and covers retail sales, online gaming, digital distribution and online advertising.
The latest report was prepared by market research firm DFC Intelligence, who found that the Asia Pacific region was fuelling the majority of growth in the global PC games market.
"In 2009 we saw North America and Europe experience a rapid uptake in purchasing virtual items. This model is what drove growth in Asia and we think it is just starting to come to Western markets," said Randy Stude, PCGA president and Intel director.
The increasing popularity of free-to-play games and social network sites such as Facebook did result in a decline in overall revenues in established Western markets though. The lack of major new subscription-based games also contributed at a fall in revenues in North America and Europe of 10 to 15 per cent.
The most significant decline though was in boxed retail sales, which now accounts for just 20 per cent of total PC game revenues worldwide.
"In our surveys of PC gamers in North America and Europe we found that over 70 per cent indicate they have bought a full game online. Furthermore, over 50 per cent indicate that they have bought a virtual item," said DFC analyst David Cole.

We already told you that Sid Meier's Civilization IV was finally getting a sequel with Civilization V later this year, and then we showed you the trailer that contained absolutely no gameplay. But now we've actually seen an early build of the game, and we can tell you how hexy it is. That's right, forget about old Civilization games which had four cardinal directions plus diagonals to choose from when moving your units; this installment ramps that down to to six. That's right! Two less directions! It's a brand new game!
In all fairness, it is Civilization but Firaxis made plenty of substantial changes to it. Besides hexing it up, they've also added ranged units (think archers, artillery, ICBMs, etc) and taken out the ability to stack units up into an army. Also, only one unit can occupy a spot at any given time, meaning you won't be able to bulldoze your opponent from one hex. They've also built an entirely new engine for this game, meaning you'll see some really nifty stuff ... provided you have a DX11 card and a multicore processor.

While social games are booming online, the killer app of the genre, or "the Mario of Facebook" is still to be designed according to the site's platform manager Gareth Davis.
He opened GDC with a keynote talk about the social games revolution, running through why Facebook games have become such big hits.
Davis said that social games and apps on Facebook have sparked a profound shift in games design.
"Facebook is at the centre of a people powered social web." It's hard not to disagree. The site has 400m users a month, 200m a day logon for sessions lasting around 55 minutes each.
In tandem with this there are a million devs making Facebook Platform Apps and using Facebook Connect.
Games are one of the most popular parts of the social networking service with 200m playing games on Facebook each month.
"We have a mass audience," said Davis. "We have moved beyond the core consumer and have people playing games across every demographic."
But, said Davis, despite their being some high profile successes in social games, "the iconic Facebook game still lies ahead of us".
"The Mario of Facebook is out there and will likely come from someone [at GDC] - it's likely your next game, which is very exciting. We think this game will change everything - and we're looking forward to playing it."

Publisher Ubisoft has revealed that the servers set-up to facilitate its new PC game DRM strategy are once again under attack in what many are presuming is a further protest against its anti-piracy measures.
Players of both Assassin’s Creed II and Silent Hunter 5 – the first two games from Ubisoft to require constant online validation to play in single player – faced disruption over the weekend after a server attack prevented some from loading or installing their titles.
Yesterday, Ubisoft admitted via its Twitter feed that: “Our servers are under attack again. Some gamers are experiencing trouble signing in. We’re working on it and will keep you posted.”
It’s yet another embarrassing twist in what had been a turbulent tale for Ubisoft ever since it first announced its new DRM policy.

In the first of a four part Command & Conquer 4 motion comic book series, a young farmer sets off for a GDI Blue Zone looking for work, only to find his destiny. I hate it when that happens.
Today EA releases episode one of the four-part Command & Conquer 4 motion-comic series, "An Unexpected Hero," in which former militia man and farmer Christian Pierce finds a less than warm welcome at the shaky hands of that guy in the picture up there. Turns out the angry man had some brothers killed by local farmers, and is having some trouble turning the other cheek.
Visit the official motion comic site to keep up with the thrilling saga, more of which should be revealed as we approach the March 16th release date for Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight.

gollum123 tips an article at the NY Times on the progress of the European Windows browser choice screen that we have been discussing recently.
"Rivals of Microsoft's market-leading Web browser have attracted a flurry of interest since the company, fulfilling a regulatory requirement, started making it easier for European users of its Windows operating system to switch. Mozilla, whose Firefox browser is the strongest competitor to Microsoft's Internet Explorer worldwide, said that more than 50,000 people had downloaded Firefox via a 'choice screen' that has been popping up on Windows-equipped computers in Europe since the end of last month. ... Opera Software, based in Oslo, said downloads of its browser in Belgium, France, Britain, Poland, and Spain had tripled since the screen began to appear. Microsoft said it was too early to tell whether the choice screen might prompt significant numbers of users to change. The digital ballot is being delivered over the Internet with software updates, and it is expected to take until mid-May to complete the process. The browser choice will also be presented to buyers of new Windows computers across the European Union for five years.

Are two (or more) versions of an OS better than one? Some say yes, and it looks like you can now count Google among them. Speaking at this week's RSA Conference, Google software security engineer Will Drewry revealed, seemingly for the first, that Google will be releasing a "business version" of Chrome OS for netbooks sometime in 2011. Details on it are still pretty light at the moment, as you might expect, but it will supposedly offer more "management muscle" than the consumer version. Drewry did drop a few more details about Chrome OS for netbooks in general, however, including the interesting tidbit that you'll be able to enable a development mode by flipping a switch located under the battery.

ioware has revealed that much-anticipated MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic is its biggest ever game - and contains more content than all of its previous Triple-A titles put together.
Speaking to the all-new edition of PC Gamer in the magazine's April 'MMO issue', creative director James Ohlen said:
"It's the biggest game I've ever worked on. I'm surprised at the enormity of it every other week. We're creating more content than Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 1, Dragon Age and Knights Of The Old Republic put together, and throw in Baldur's Gate, too."
LucasArts has previously confirmed that the Star Wars: The Old Republic release date will arrive in spring 2011.
You can read the full six-page feature on Star Wars: The Old Republic in the latest issue of PC Gamer, which reached subscribers today. It'll be in the shops by the end of the week.

If Matt had to change his pants over the Valve Apple teasers the other day, what will today's wardrobe malfunction be? I only ask because the latest GameInformer confirms Portal 2 is coming to Mac.
Scheduled for a fall release, Portal 2 will be a full-fledged Portal experience distributed to the Mac, presumably, by an all-but-confirmed Steam service for that platform.

Following a weekend of server trouble that lead to some gamers being unable to play their copies of Assassin’s Creed II or Silent Hunter V thanks to Ubisoft’s new internet-only DRM, the publisher has apologised for the outage – adding that the problems were down to an “attack” on its server
It also insisted that only five per cent of players were affected by the six and a half hour outage.
“Ubisoft would like to apologise to anyone who could not play Assassin’s Creed II or Silent Hunter 5 yesterday,” a statement read. “Servers were attacked and while the servers did not go down, service was limited from 2:30PM to 9PM Paris time.
“95 per cent of players were not affected, but a small group of players attempting to open a game session did receive denial of service errors. All players with an open session during the attack were not affected.”
Ubisoft went on to again affirm that the DRM on both games has, despite claims to the contrary, yet to be broken.

Earlier today, our tips inbox and the official Assassin's Creed 2 forum were set ablaze by incensed owners of the PC version of the aforementioned Italian revenge epic. According to numerous reports from prospective players of the game, Ubisoft's DRM authentification servers have crashed, forcing some players to suffer lengthy login periods when booting up Assassin's Creed 2, and locking some folks out of the game entirely.
A Ubisoft representative responded to a particularly rage-filled forum thread, stating "clearly the extended downtime and lengthy login issues are unacceptable, particularly as I've been told these servers are constantly monitored." The representative added "I'll do what I can to get more information on what the issue is here first thing tomorrow and push for a resolution and assurance this won't happen in the future." We've got a really great suggestion for how to make such an assurance: Find a less abominable DRM policy.

These days, multiplatform games tend to be dominated by console gamers. Modern Warfare 2, for example, has a relatively tiny PC-playing community. Not so for Battlefield Bad Company 2!
DICE associate producer Barrie Tingle has revealed that at the moment, during the week of the game's retail release, more people are playing the PC version of the game than both the 360 and PS3 editions combined.
Sure, Battlefield is a franchise with its spiritual home on the PC, but still. It's nice to see not everybody has abandoned the ol' mouse and keyboard in favour of the couch and a Dualshock 3.
