A few weeks ago we discussed news of Ubisoft's DRM plans for future games, which reportedly went so far as to require a constant net connection, terminating your game if you get disconnected for any reason. Well, it's here; upon playing review copies of the PC version of Assassin's Creed 2 and Settlers VII, PCGamer found the DRM just as annoying as you might expect. Quoting:
"If you get disconnected while playing, you're booted out of the game. All your progress since the last checkpoint or savegame is lost, and your only options are to quit to Windows or wait until you're reconnected. The game first starts the Ubisoft Game Launcher, which checks for updates. If you try to launch the game when you're not online, you hit an error message right away. So I tried a different test: start the game while online, play a little, then unplug my net cable. This is the same as what happens if your net connection drops momentarily, your router is rebooted, or the game loses its connection to Ubisoft's 'Master servers.' The game stopped, and I was dumped back to a menu screen — all my progress since it last autosaved was lost."

Authorities say this 27-year-old man, angered when his mother asked him to quiet down while playing Warcraft, choked her and rammed his head through a wall before his grandfather finally shot him. He wasn't seriously wounded. Nerd rage'll do that.
James Swan (pictured) of Manatee, Fla. was drinking and playing World of Warcraft around 10 p.m. on Feb. 11 when his 50-year-old mother asked him to pipe down, as her three grandchildren were trying to sleep at that hour. Cops say Swan ignored her, and when she put her hand on his shoulder, he flipped the f—- out.
The Bradenton Herald got the police report, and it says Swan grabbed his mother by the hair and threw her across the bed. She managed to get to the kitchen phone to call 911, but he tore it out of the wall, rammed his head through the hole where it had been, then threw her on the ground and started choking her. That's when his grandfather - mom's dad - got a gun from a gun closet. Still holstered, the gun misfired in a struggle and Swan was grazed behind the left ear.
Before you get huffy, no one's pinning this on the game, although it would boost MMOs' street cred considerably. Pretty much everyone can point the finger at the demon likker. Meantime, Swan is in the slammer, probably pissed that his raiding party hasn't formed up to bust him out.

Shorah b'shemtee! Uru Live has been released for free, as a first step towards opening its source. This game, an MMO released by the makers of Myst and Riven in 2003, has been canceled, zombified, resurrected, canceled again, and is now about to be released as open source to its dedicated fan base. Massively has written a brief newbie guide if you're unfamiliar with the game.

PC Gamer has said that a constant net connection is required to play Assassin's Creed 2 on PC. And if you lose connection with Ubi's servers it kicks you out of your game.
"When we heard of Ubisoft's plan to require an internet connection for all their future PC games, we hoped they'd abort it or scale it back in the face of the outrage and astonishment it caused. They haven't, and it's here," says the PC Gamer blog.
"We've just received Assassin's Creed 2 and Settlers VII for review, and verified with Ubisoft that the DRM is the same as the boxed product. If you get disconnected while playing, you're booted out of the game. All your progress since the last checkpoint or savegame is lost, and your only options are to quit to Windows or wait until you're reconnected."

According to the results of a new survey by leading casual publisher-developer PopCap, nearly 25 per cent of all those in the US and UK play social games on a regular basis. That means one-in-four, or 100 million, from the two countries spend time tackling games on a social network at least once a week.
PopCap, who created hugely popular casual titles like Peggle and Bejeweled, have also concluded that an 'average' social gamer is a 43-year-old woman.
A statement form PopCap read: "While still in its infancy compared to the traditional video game industry, the social games sector represents a huge opportunity to reach hundreds of millions of consumers who historically do not play video games."
PopCap also claims that social games will generate revenues of $1 billion in 2010 alone.
Additionally the survey revealed that two thirds of social gamers are US based, where 55 per cent are female. In the UK that figure rises slightly, where only 42 per cent are male. In the States older social gamers are more typical than in the UK, and perhaps most surprisingly of all, across both nations only six per cent of all those playing titles regularly on social networks are under the age of 21.

Microsoft has announced that its UK pricing for Office 2010 will mirror developments in the United States, where pricing has been reduced to entice more users.
According to Tech Radar, when the product is released here in June, end-user costs will reflect this strategy to grow market share through reduced prices, and in addition all new PCs will ship with a copy of Office Starter 2010 – a free product that offers the Office experience while encouraging people to upgrade to the full paid version.
The boxed versions of Office Home and Student will cost £109.99, Office Home and Business will cost £239, while Office Professional will retail at £399.99.
Prices for the product key alone are now £89.99 for Home and Student, £189.99 for Home and Business, and £299 for Office Professional.
Microsoft's new portfolio has seen significant changes as the vendor looks to reduce the number of SKUs in the Office category. As a result, the three examples given above represent the entire Office suite. In all cases, the number of applications included in the package has been increased.
For example, Office Home and Student 2010 includes Word 2010, Excel 2010, PowerPoint 2010, OneNote 2010 and the full suite of Microsoft Office web apps.

Finally, a little bit of respect from Adobe with this alpha release of the Adobe Flash Player 10 that was made available for all Linux 64-bit enthusiasts! As noted, 'this is a prerelease version,' so handle with care. Just remove any existing Flash player and extract the new .so file in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins (or /usr/lib/opera/plugins).

Retailers have "lost faith entirely" with the PC games sector, with the shrinking market affecting sales of related games magazines, according to Imagine Publishing.
The company has told GamesIndustry.biz that it is currently considering the future of its PC gaming magazine Total PC Gaming, although managing director Damian Butt labelled recent internet gossip of a full closure of the title as "mischief" by a former employee.
"I'm looking at Total PC Gaming at the moment, because although it's a profitable magazine for Imagine, it's future potential is limited because retailers and magazine stockists have lost faith with the PC games sector entirely," admitted Butt.
"We have had fantastic support from our advertisers on Total PC Gaming, and outperformed our expectations, but I would much rather have a talented team working on a magazine where there is a greater future upside, such as our new launch How it Works, because it takes as much effort to make a magazine that generates a good profit as one that makes very little."
Imagine isn't the only media outlet publishing magazines for a shrinking market – ABC results from Future Publishing last week showed that monthly sales for PC Gamer and PC Zone were down dramatically during 2009.

It seems that NetEase has finally been given the go-ahead by officials to launch World of Warcraft in China following many months of uncertainty.
According to analyst firm Cowen and Company, a Chinese-language notice has been posted on the website of China's General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) regulatory body stating approval has been granted for NetEase to operate the game.
No reference was made to any penalties handed out to the company for going live with the game prior to receiving GAPP approval - an accusation made by GAPP and denied by NetEase.
However, Cowen noted that any likely fine would have a minimal impact on NetEase's balance sheet anyway, which currently shows over £900m in cash.
Resolution of the regulatory issue might also pave the way for government approval of the WoW: Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack later in the year, it added, and benefit Activision Blizzard shareholders. The publisher recently mentioned that it expects the game to continue to operate in China for the foreseeable future.
"We believe NetEase is well positioned to benefit from continuing strong growth in the Chinese online gaming market. Additionally, NetEase’s licensing deal with Blizzard gives the company the most diversified portfolio of games among its peers," said Cowen.
World of Warcraft first ran into problems in China in March of last year when GAPP announced a clamp down on foreign games in a bid to avoid excessive penetration of foreign culture on Chinese youth.
Blizzard subsequently changed its operator in the country from The9 to NetEase, but the game was forced to remain in beta phase following the move, and NetEase announced a suspension of new registrations earlier this month.

If you ever needed a reason to go Linux, here you go. The noise surrounding this patently obscure Windows XP bug / patch fiasco has just reached a fever pitch, and now we've got engineers within Redmond scratching their heads, too. As the story goes, Microsoft recently patched a security hole that took care of an antediluvian DOS vulnerability, and in doing so, some users began to see BSODs and endless reboots. Today, we've learned that the patch has been yanked, and Microsoft is suggesting that malware is to blame. But here's the skinny -- the patch simply disturbed the malware, which called a specific kernel code that directs your PC to keel over; in other words, any application that calls that same code could theoretically leave your machine in dire straits. And that, friends, probably explains the software giant's following quote:
"In our continuing investigation in to the restart issues related to MS10-015 that a limited number of customers are experiencing, we have determined that malware on the system can cause the behavior. We are not yet ruling out other potential causes at this time and are still investigating."
Rock, meet hard place.

There's nothing to look at just yet, but Samsung's own Phil Newton apparently just confirmed that the company will be debuting a Chrome OS netbook in the near future, according to a report by Australia's Channel News. The laptop will be similar to the N210 (pictured), with a 10.1-inch screen, 3G, WiFi, 2GB of RAM, 64GB of flash storage and a purported 12 hour battery life. There are also rumors that it'll be running a 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor, but the amount of straight up information from Phil makes speculation almost feel silly at this point. The netbook is supposed to be introduced later this year.

A rootkit infection may be the cause of a Windows Blue Screen of Death issue experienced by Windows XP users who applied the latest round of Microsoft patches. It appears that the affected Windows PCs had the rootkit infection prior to deploying the Microsoft patches. Researcher Patrick W. Barnes, investigating the issue, has isolated the infection to the Windows atapi.sys file, a driver used by Windows to connect hard drives and other components. Barnes identified the infection as the Tdss-rootkit, which surfaced last November and has been spreading quickly, creating zombie machines for botnet activity.

The PC version of Alan Wake is officially no more.
A spokesperson for Microsoft offered Strategy Informer this statement:
"Some games are more suited for the intimacy of the PC, and others are best played from the couch in front of a larger TV screen. We ultimately realised that the most compelling way to experience Alan Wake was on the Xbox 360 platform, so we focused on making it an Xbox 360 exclusive.
"Both Microsoft and Remedy have long histories in PC game development. This decision was about matching this specific game to the right platform."
A question-mark has hung over Alan Wake on PC since Remedy publicly refocused its efforts on the Xbox 360 SKU last July.
That work appears to have paid off, as last night Microsoft announced a 21st May release date for Alan Wake on Xbox 360.
We'll bring you our thoughts of the long-awaited Xbox 360 exclusive from X10 very soon.

Tuesday's security updates from Microsoft have crippled Windows XP PCs with the notorious Blue Screen of Death, users have reported on the company's support forum. Complaints began early yesterday, and gained momentum throughout the day. 'I updated 11 Windows XP updates today and restarted my PC like it asked me to,' said a user identified as 'tansenroy' who kicked off a growing support thread: 'From then on, Windows cannot restart again! It is stopping at the blue screen with the following message: 'A problem has been detected and Windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.' Others joined in with similar reports. Several users posted solutions, but the one laid out by 'maxyimus' was marked by a Microsoft support engineer as the way out of the perpetual blue screens
