Bethesda Softworks took advantage of the recent Game Developers Conference to take the wraps off a new game called Hunted: The Demon's Forge that they're partnering with development studio inXile to create. It's planned for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3, though no release window has been set. It's a third-person action game with a swords & sorcery setting, and it features two heroes as they fight their way through monster-filled dungeons. The game is designed such that two users can play together online (no split-screen), each controlling one of the heroes. ShackNews summed it up thus: "From what I saw, Hunted rolled up ideas from a number of different games to create its modern reinterpretation of the dungeon crawl. There was the raw action appeal of wading through waves of goblins, spiders, and related denizens. The skill system and weapon upgrades bring in the character development side from a role playing game. And the co-op design with its warrior and archer dynamic introduces the reward of playing together like an MMO."

Analysts predict global growth of 12.6 per cent for 2010
IDC has predicted that the worldwide PC market will return to double figure growth this year, and is set to continue until 2014.
In its quarterly market tracker, the global market was predicted to grow by 12.6 per cent. Emerging markets are expected to continue their current growth of 18.5 per cent in 2010, overtaking more mature markets, which will see growth of 7.2 per cent.
The analyst also predicted that average selling prices would stabilise this year, citing reduced growth in the netbook segment.
"PC volume continued to grow in 2009 – fairing much better than in 2001, when a smaller recession produced a decline in PC volume. The positive 2009 results reflect lower prices and the fact that PCs are increasingly a must-have product," said IDC research analyst Jay Chou.
“With lean margins and further market consolidation remaining a harsh reality for the foreseeable future, vendors are increasingly looking to a mix of volume and specialized products to grow revenue, including new combinations of portability, performance, and the intriguing possibilities of touch computing. Overcoming challenges, such as synchronizing data across multiple devices, will be an important step in enabling adoption of more devices and expanding market growth.”

Solid state drives may be the fast-moving wave of the future in PC storage, but the technology for bigger and better magnetic media keeps on trucking. Only recently, that truck hit something of a pothole: the 4096-byte sector size that will allow advanced format drives to have more usable space (and surpass the current 2TB capacity limit) doesn't play nice with the world's most popular OS -- Windows XP. While manufacturers like Western Digital have already introduced software that successfully combats the problem, the new drives perform poorly in Win XP without it, and rival manufacturer Seagate told the BBC that even with software tricks, XP users should expect the occasional 5ms delay, or 10% speed reduction, during write times. Is this the end of Windows XP? Hardly. Should you make sure to install the software that comes with your next hard drive? Absolutely.

Speaking at the Game Developers Conference, Sid Meier has declared that 2011 is "the year of Civilization".
He made the statement during the Q&A session which followed his keynote speech. When asked what he's looking forward to playing this year Meier said, "In the immediate future I think this is the year of Civlization.
"But looking further out, there's so much energy and dynamism in this industry... Every day there's something new, and that's a big part of being excited about being in games," he added.
Sid Meier, giving it all GDC.
According to Meier, new platforms such as Facebook and Xbox Live have opened up new gaps in the market. "It's a really cool time to be a game designer. We've certainly seen the indie games movement put a lot of new energy into gaming," he said. "The whole big budget thing has gone away and that's opened up a whole lot of new opportunities."
As announced last week, Civilization V is slated for release this autumn. Meier said it's coming along nicely, telling the audience, "We're playing the game almost daily right now and putting in all sorts of cool stuff."
He also said it takes a certain kind of person to enjoy the Civ games. "If you play Civilization you are an egomaniac," Meier stated. "It says on the box, 'Build a civilization to stand the test of time.' If you're going, 'Oh yeah, I can do that' - you are an egomaniac."

Various hints dropped by Peter Molyneux and Lionhead point to a PC version of Fable III.
"There are some things we haven't seen," Molyneux told GameSpot. "We still haven't talked to the world about Natal. We still haven't talked to the world about co-op and what we're doing with co-op.
"We still haven't really talked about, 'Are there any other platforms for Fable that we should be talking about now?'"
That last question tied in with a swiftly edited Lionhead job posting (seen by VG247 on Blue's News) advertising for a network programmer whose job "involves converting and maintaining the network code of the Xbox 360 version of this game to the PC, and enabling the Xbox 360 version and the PC version to play together".
Various Fable III bits and bobs have tumbled from GDC 2010: new screenshots, confirmation of John Cleese as a butler, and various musings about how well Natal will work with the game.

Harriet Harman, the deputy leader of the Labour Party, has said that UK government ministers are 'taking action' to get Facebook to add a British child protection button (called CEOP) to its site. The move comes after the UK's Daily Mail withdrew allegations that teenagers on Facebook are continually pestered — though Facebook is still considering suing the paper. The campaign apparently ignores Facebook's assertion that it already has better child protection in place and the CEOP button would be limited to the UK

March 12th, 2010, 23:52 Posted By: wraggster
OnLive boss Steve Perlman has revealed that the cloud gaming service will allow users to rent PC titles on a game-by-game basis, highlighting a more flexible approach for customers.
The company said earlier in the week that the basic OnLive packages consists of a $14.99 monthly subscription with games priced on top of that, but a new Portal will not charge for access to selected rental titles and free-to-play demos.
"The OnLive Game Portal is for gamers looking for direct access to OnLive games without being required to subscribe to the features of the full OnLive Game Service," said Perlman.
"Through the OnLive Game Portal, gamers will be able to play select games directly on a rental basis as well as game demos for free; subject to available OnLive service capacity and whatever usage limits are associated with each given demo. Rentals will be priced on a per-game basis."
Perlman added that the Portal would use the same technology as the OnLive Game Service, offering instant access to high-end PC titles through a browser plug-in.
The OnLive Game Service is set to launch on June 17 in 48 US states, although the rental Portal will follow at a later date.
Yesterday, Signal Hill's Todd Greenwald said that a number of factors could hamper the launch, including the monthly subscription, high costs for new releases and an ongoing question of technical performance.

Launch date for cloud-based gaming system which removes need for high-end hardware
Online game streaming service OnLive will launch in the US on June 17th, representing a significant potential threat to the current gaming hardware and software market.
The game content streams directly to the PC or Mac, removing the need for a box product or a full download. Crucially for the PC hardware market, it also doesn't require the type of high-end hardware the games would otherwise need on-board the users machine, as the actual processing is done at the other end.
The service is also going to be available on TVs through the OnLive MicroConsole –which parks the firm's tanks firmly on the lawns of Xbox 360 and PS3.
The games can be bought outright or rented. Key games publishers such as EA, Ubisoft and Take-Two have backed the programme, presumably attracted by the extra revenue opportunities a digital rental service offers.
The technology has the potential to significantly widen the amount of PC and Mac users able to play the latest games – though hardware vendors, which make a lot of money out of the PC gaming community, may be less enthusiastic about any technology which reduces the need for high-end graphics cards and CPUs.
"The OnLive Game Service creates a new opportunity for consumers to play the latest games without spending hundreds of dollars on a hardware system to make it happen," said Mike McGarvey, COO of OnLive. "As a Mac user myself, I'm excited about the opportunity to help bring high-end gaming to this new and significant market."

via MCV
21m O2 customers will be able to get PC games ahead of their release, MCV can reveal.
The scheme is part of O2’s multi-million pound Priority campaign, which previously allowed music fans the chance to buy gig tickets before they officially went on sale.
The communications giant has partnered with digital retailer Green Man Gaming to offer its consumers the chance to buy certain new PC titles up to 48 hours before their release date. But that’s not all, free game downloads will also be available to new O2 mobile and broadband customers.
O2’s head of home and broadband Felix Geyr said: “We are keen to provide gaming solutions to our customers and the Green Man Gaming’s proposition will address an insight we believe to be relevant to our customers.”
Green Man Gaming CEO Paul Sulyok added: “O2’s vision for the consumer is the most compelling of all UK operators.
“With over 21m customers and market leading retention figures, O2 has proved that putting consumers first gets results.”
The move follows O2’s commitment to music – with the firm running its own festival and securing naming rights over UK music venues.
In addition, MCV can reveal that O2 is not just selling titles digitally – video games are now available in many of its 490 UK outlets.
The company says it has an extensive range of software, which is available for anyone to buy, not just O2 customers.
O2 began trialling games in its stores last year. Consoles are also available to buy separately through O2’s online store.

March 12th, 2010, 00:29 Posted By: wraggster
If InstantAction.com's CEO Lou Castle is to be believed, we're apparently going to be playing games pretty much wherever we want in the not-so-distant future. He's just revealed plans (via IndustryGamers) to relaunch his site with a new business/distribution model and a partnership with game streaming service Gaikai. In addition to the already existing model of a quick download (a claimed 4 - 5 minutes) that still somewhat relies on your computer power to process the game's graphics, IA will now offer a streaming option for those who'd prefer a quicker, less hardware reliant gaming experience. "It's the perfect implementation of a thin client solution because when it's available it's brilliant and when it's not available it's ok ... you only have to wait a couple minutes."
The aforementioned streaming option (employing Gaikai) will also be embedabble on the web, as demonstrated with Assassin's Creed (not to mention to us earlier today) "Now if people are reading a review of a game, they don't have to go find it ... they can play it right then and there in the browser."
And that's just the beginning -- Castle clearly has an eye on digital distribution services when he talks about employing Facebook as "InstantAction's Xbox Live." IA's new distribution model essentially promises to developers/publishers the ability to release games with a variety of payment methods (pay as you go, free-to-play, one-time charge, etc.) while incorporating the aforementioned embed and streaming functionalities.
So far, the company has inked one deal for distribution (with LucasArts for The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition) and Castle claims to be pursuing others right now. And apparently it won't be too long before we get to check out the new system ourselves, as the revamped digital platform is said to be "launching soon."

March 11th, 2010, 21:14 Posted By: wraggster
A number of factors are pouring cold water on the launch plans for cloud gaming service OnLive, including an installed base too small to be meaningful for larger publishers, and a pricing model that could prove too expensive for consumers.
That's according to Signal Hill's Todd Greenwald, who also pointed to problems with lag, and no support for home TVs or 1080p HD output until after the June 17 PC and Mac launch.
"While we find the service compelling and exciting, we are somewhat sceptical that OnLive will really turn the gaming world upside down any time soon," wrote Greenwald in his latest note to investors.
"While OnLive enables users to forgo spending $300 on a console, the $15 per month fee adds up to $180 per year, or $360 over 2 years. Additionally, we believe the target audience for OnLive (hard core gamers) really values the packaged good disc version of a game, which allows them to quickly re-sell a title in the used market and gain back $20-30 of the $60 purchase price.
"If publishers try to sell digital-only new release games at a $40-50 ASP (average selling price), we don't think gamers will find the price points compelling," he said.
The service will more likely be useful for publishers to sell older catalogue titles, such as the games already confirmed for launch – Assassin's Creed II, Borderlands, Mass Effect 2 – which will be 6-9 months old when the service starts.
"Finally, we'd note that even if successful, the installed base will be too small to be material for large publishers like EA, Activision, THQ and Take-Two (perhaps 500,000 to 1 million units, compared with 67 million Wii, 39 million Xbox 360, and 33 million PlayStation 3 units," he added.
As well as a launch date, OnLive said yesterday that it would reveal detailed pricing packages nearer to the date, with long-term deals expected. The first 25,000 users to pre-order the service will receive three months free subscriptions.

March 11th, 2010, 21:13 Posted By: wraggster
EA chief financial officer Eric Brown has claimed that BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic is the publisher's most expensive game in the company's nearly 30 year history.
Speaking to a Wedbush Morgan Securities audience in New York, as reported by sister site Eurogamer, Brown commented that the massively multiplayer online game was the "largest ever development project, period, in the history of the company".
Although he did not put a specific figure on the development costs Brown indicated that a standard packaged title cost around $30 million but "any MMO costs significantly more than that".
He also suggested that World of WarCraft cost Blizzard "$100 million, perhaps more" on its original release, implying that the initial figure for The Old Republic was similar.
"That's lifetime [research and development] to actually ship it and obviously then there's maintenance subsequent to ship and expansion packs," said Brown.
The Old Republic is the second Star Wars MMO and follows the relative failure of Sony Online Entertainment's Star Wars Galaxies, which was set during the time frame of the original three movies.
The new game is meant as a direct sequel to the two single-player Knights Of The Old Republic games on the Xbox/PC, the first created by BioWare and the second by Obsidian Entertainment.
The Old Republic is tentatively aimed at a spring 2011 release.

March 11th, 2010, 00:59 Posted By: wraggster
Following today's GDC keynote from OnLive CEO Steve Perlman, his COO, Mike McGarvey, fielded questions about the game streaming service that's launching June 17. Unfortunately, just how much full games will cost on top of the $14.95 monthly subscription fee was not one that he answered.
McGarvey did confirm that the service will launch with a lineup of titles "in the teens," comprised of some that will have been on shelves for a few months -- Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins were examples -- and others that will release closer to OnLive's debut, such as Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. The catalog will grow from fewer than 20 games on day one to "50 to 60" by the end of 2010, according to McGarvey. These (and all) games on the service will be playable "for years" after release, he said, addressing concerns that buying a game "hosted" by the company could be a risky investment.
Some details are being saved for an announcement at or leading up to E3, including when the OnLive micro-console will be available and, of course, game pricing. McGarvey would say that the company is looking to offer incentives (free games, perhaps?) to build the subscriber base, and that those who sign up "may get some free content" for the monthly fee ... at some point. The micro-console may also be offered free with a service commitment, McGarvey stated, though it will "potentially" be sold on its own.
Saying that more than 250,000 people signed up (but weren't all accepted) for the OnLive beta, McGarvey admitted that the company expects "demand will far outweigh capacity" for the service's launch -- we'll be interested to find out how many people actually "pre-subscribe" and if the company changes its outlook leading up to mid-June.
