darkwing_bmf sends word of Turbine's announcement that Lord of the Rings Online will become a free-to-play game this fall. 'The move is another validation of the free-to-play business model, where gamers can play for free and pay real money for virtual goods such as better weapons or decorative gear for their game characters. The business model has been popular in Asia but only recently took off in the US. This move shows the pressure is building on game publishers to shift to the new business model or face declining audiences.' According to a post on the official website, LotRO's micro-transaction system will be "very similar" to how Turbine's DDO store works, and current subscribers will maintain all of their privileges.

Publisher THQ has announced plans to bring free-to-play real-time strategy game Company of Heroes Online to North America, after the game was originally only intended for Asian markets.
The game is a reengineered version of Relic Entertainment's critically acclaimed Second World War strategy game, originally launched in 2006 as a standard retail release.
The gameplay and visuals remain largely unchanged in Company of Heroes Online and the original single player game is still available as part of the download. However, the main focus is a persistent online multiplayer mode, originally created for the game's release in South Korea.
Chinese publisher Shanda has had additional input on the version released in mainland China, where the game is monetised by allowing users to pay for instant access to higher ranks and more advanced in-game abilities.
"We are delighted to bring this award-winning franchise to gamers in a whole new way with the online version of the Company of Heroes experience," said THQ global brand management vice president Travis Plane.
"Players will benefit from the persistent upgrades and the ability to tailor their armies to really suit their play style making this a unique experience for everyone," he added.

The BBC has released the first episode of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games. City of the Daleks was due for release on Saturday but is already available for download for PC if you live in the UK.
The Mac version won't be available until 15th June.
Official Friends of Eurogamer Rock Paper Shotgun spotted it and subsequently detailed a first playthrough of the game.
"It feels Doctor Whoy, in its verve, in its gleeful pseudo-science, its banter and its nick-of-time coincidences," wrote Alec.
"Unfortunately, it's also highly annoying - electing to substitute real puzzles with repetitive maze games and haphazard sneaking."
It's free, so we'd suggest you go see for yourself.

SEGA has confirmed the rumours and unveiled Shogun 2: Total War. The game will be released exclusively on PC in 2011.
The details picked from the leaked fact sheet have turned out to be true, although the multiplayer parts are still TBC.
Shogun 2 will present a smaller-scope but more detailed, personal experience.
Unit roster has been trimmed from hundreds to 30-40 and factions cut down to eight rival Japanese feudal warlords, according to IGN. Similarly, the geographical scale of Shogun 2 will be reigned in, preferring the small Japanese territory to a global scope.
You'll discover who the historical faction leaders of the time were, and where their loyalties and politics lay. Generals will return to rouse troops before battle, and this time their traits will be hand-picked by you rather than assigned at random.
Naval combat, an important development of Empire: Total War, returns in the shape of oared ships and hordes or archers, and there will be varying vessel-types to pick from depending on your choice of tactics.

CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg has defended his firm's position on privacy settings after a grilling at the All Thing Digital D8 conference this week.
TechRadar reports Zuckerberg insisted: "Privacy is very important to us. I think there are some misperceptions. People use Facebook to share and to stay connected. You don't start off on Facebook being connected to your friends, you've got to be able to find them. So having some information available broadly is good for that."
He went on to say: "Now, there have been misperceptions that we're trying to make all information open, but that's false. We encourage people to keep their most private information private. But some of the most basic information, we suggest that people leave public."
The social networking site has come under mass criticism in recent weeks over its handling of private information. Most complaints relate to the difficulty for users to specify settings, and the possibility of that information being sold on to third parties.

Google made some waves earlier this week by reportedly moving employees off of Windows and onto Mac OS X and Linux machines -- although the company wouldn't confirm the switch, the move was said to be precipitated by security issues after Chinese hackers attacked the search giant back in January. Now, that wasn't the only reason mentioned in the report -- Google apparently also wants employees to use home-grown products like Chrome OS, and it's sort of weird for Google to buy tons of software licenses from a major competitor -- but the implication that Windows isn't secure enough for Google seems to have raised Microsoft's hackles: a new post on the Windows Team Blog says the irony of the move is "hard to overlook" as Gmail and Google Docs have privacy and security issues of their own, offers a point-by-point breakdown of all the ways Windows 7 is more secure than the competition, and goes on to suggest that a recent piece of shady Mac OS X malware is "a future sign of things to come for Apple and security." Meow. Now, we honestly think the real story is as simple as Google not wanting to write Microsoft a really big check, but we're not going to say no to a little fight here -- Eric, Steve, you have anything to say?

3D technology without the need for glasses could be here within five years, Taiwanese firm Industrial Technology Research Institute has claimed, reports TechRadar.
The field is one of the hottest properties in consumer electronics today, with many of the big tech firms pouring huge amounts of marketing and R&D cash at it. However removing specialised glasses would represent a significant shift in approach.
The firm has utilised parallax barrier technology on a 42-inch television which it says could be sold by 2015. There are currently problems dogging the format, mainly involving the seemingly narrow effective area – meaning moving slightly away from dead-centre will significantly disrupt the 3D capability.
3D tech was one of the key fighting grounds at this year's Gadget Show.

Intel has revealed a number of new products and features based on its Atom line of processors at this year’s Computex and outlined plans to expand in to new markets.
The ‘Pine Trail’ dual-core mobile processor was demonstrated running on the world’s thinnest laptop, supported by the ‘Canoe Lake’ platform, which Intel claims is 50 per cent thinner and runs at a lower temperature than any other chip platform.
The chip vendor has recently seen rising interest in its Atom mobile processors – originally designed for the netbook segment – which are to be introduced in to a number of new environments, including cars, smartphones, and smart TVs.
The vendor also revealed that its recently unveiled Atom-based System-on-Chip processors, codenamed ‘Tunnel Creek’ which include integrated graphics, have received a further 3,000 enquiries for non-PC designs, including fish finders and golf carts.

Steve Jobs has told the D8 Conference that he thinks that traditional PCs will dwindle to a tiny minority.
According to CNet, Jobs likened desktop PC to the agrarian trucks that were ubiquitous throughout the United States before the 1950s.
"When we were an agrarian nation, all cars were trucks because that's what you needed on the farms," said Jobs, going on to say that as cities and the technology developed, things like power steering and automatic transmission became popular. “PCs are going to be like trucks. They are still going to be around... they are going to be one out of X people.”
“This transformation is going to make some people uneasy because the PC has taken us a long ways. It's brilliant. We like to talk about the post-PC era, but when it really starts to happen, it's uncomfortable.”

A fan site of all things Simlish, called Infinite Sims, recently uncovered a handful of web domains registered by the ever-stealthy, third-party outfit Corporate Domains, Inc. These reserved addresses could be an indication of an upcoming expansion to the Sims universe -- one that could take the bright, cheerful world of Sunset Valley back into the Dark Ages.
The reserved domain names all include some variation of "thesimsmedieval" or "thesimsgetmedieval," which might hint at the subject matter of the next batch of content for the highly successful franchise. Hey, we wouldn't mind trying to move up the Sim caste system. Maybe learn how to joust? Perhaps go pheasant hunting in the northern wilds? Learn how to relieve ourselves properly in a sturdy waste bucket? No, wait. That last thing sounds terrible.

Sony Online Entertainment has teamed up with LucasArts to create an all-new Star Wars MMO.
Browser-based PC game The Clone Wars Adventures will be a free-to-play title aimed at a family audience.
It will be based on the cartoon world seen in the Clone Wars TV shows and movie - and will be released online and in real shops in the autumn.
"Clone Wars Adventures will be the most authentic and accessible Clone Wars experience for kids and families to play in their very own living room," said LucasArts publishing chief Mary Bihr.
Players will be able to subscribe to a monthly membership to access more content.
The game will feature starfighter combat, racing, puzzles, tower defence-type games and more. Players can also purchase Star Wars outfits, items and accessories through micro-transactions using Station Cash, SOE's virtual currency.
It's been built using SOE's Free Realms engine.
"Clone Wars Adventures is the ultimate destination for fans of The Clone Wars series and will bring the action and excitement of the show to players online so they can experience the The Clone Wars universe firsthand" said John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment.
"We've worked with LucasArts and Lucasfilm to create a virtual world that is seamlessly integrated with the TV series and a true extension of the show. It's also just flat-out fun to play."
LucasArts and SOE have previously teamed up on MMO Star Wars Galaxies.

Reader awyeah notes a Financial Times report that Google is ditching the use of Windows internally. Some blogs have picked up the FT piece but so far there isn't any other independent reporting of the claim, which is based on comments from anonymous Googlers. One indication of possibly hasty reporting is the note that Google "employs more than 10,000 workers internationally," whereas it's easy enough to find official word that the total exceeds 20,000.
"The directive to move to other operating systems began in earnest in January, after Google's Chinese operations were hacked, and could effectively end the use of Windows at Google. ... 'We're not doing any more Windows. It is a security effort,' said one Google employee. ... New hires are now given the option of using Apple's Mac computers or PCs running the Linux operating system. 'Linux is open source and we feel good about it,' said one employee. 'Microsoft we don't feel so good about.' ... Employees wanting to stay on Windows required clearance from 'quite senior levels,' one employee said. 'Getting a new Windows machine now requires CIO approval,' said another employee."

For the last 24 hours, a series of attacks have exploited Facebook's 'Like' feature through a clickjacking vulnerability. Using subjects such as 'This Girl Has An Interesting Way Of Eating A Banana, Check It Out!' hackers have spread an attack that links to web pages that use invisible iFrames to trick users into saying they like the content. Users are presented with a innocent-seeming web page that says 'Click here to continue,' but clicking at any point on the page publishes the same message to their own Facebook page. Security blogger Graham Cluley says that hundreds of thousands of Facebook users have been hit, and offers advice on how to clean up affected Facebook profiles.

The implementation of overly-strict digital rights management has resulted in pirates having a better gaming experience than legitimate customers, according to Gamesbrief’s Nicholas Lovell.
“It seems crazy to me that Ubisoft didn't emulate Steam, which by some estimates has more than half the market, and instead went for their own, draconian system,” he told PC World, as reported by CVG.
“There is no doubt in my mind that pirates now have a better experience than legitimate consumers. Publishers spend a ton of money on promoting its games. So there are ways to see piracy as the start of a relationship with a future consumer, not theft.”
The words are in stark contrast to recent claims from Namco Bandai that Ubisoft’s model is probably the best option currently available.
When asked what alternative approaches Ubisoft could have adopted, Lovell added: “Give the whole game away entirely for free, make it small and charge for DLC. Slash the marketing budget and rely on pirated copies to spread the word about how good your game is, then charge for additional elements.”

BioWare's lead designer James Ohlen has done a quick interview with IGN about Star Wars: The Old Republic's concept of "companion characters." Not only do you get to tool around the universe as a Sith or a Jedi, but as we first heard back at the game's announcement, you get to bring some other poor suckers with you. The idea sounds a lot like your party members from Dragon Age or Mass Effect 2 -- your companions will follow an "Affection" system, and you can end up making them "twisted to the dark side of the Force" or "stronger and more independent," depending on how you treat -- even gift -- them. (Those being just a couple of examples.)
Companion characters will also have a lot of combat utility, and you may want to bring some of them based strictly on how they complement you in combat. The gear you equip for them will also make a difference, so you may have to tailor your party and their gear for the specific goals of any given mission. The system doesn't sound too different from past BioWare games, with the caveat that, since it's an MMO, you'll have to direct AI players in real-time rather than pausing the game to give out orders. Ohlen also says his favorite recent character is Alistair, which worries us a little bit -- he always struck us as whiny.

Blizzard co-founder Frank Pearce believes that everyone who has a crack at StarCraft II should be able to get into it because the game accommodates players on a number of levels.
The real-time strategy game has a reputation for its intimidating speed and depth, but Pearce isn't concerned.
"It's just like World of Warcraft, right?" he told Eurogamer this week.
"With WOW there's all these different types of play, and by far the most intimidating type of play is the PvP element, right? Whether it's open world or Battlegrounds or arenas, it's the most intimidating part.
"But StarCraft II should be a compelling experience for everyone, regardless of how deeply they want to partake of it, just as WOW has compelling experiences depending on how you want to play it."
One example of that is the way the single-player campaign is constructed, with each map offering its own unique challenges. (Check out our hands-on StarCraft II preview to learn about The Dig and Welcome to the Jungle scenarios.)
"Totally. If all we wanted you to do was build up your forces and sweep in and destroy your opponent's base, we don't need to do a lot to design that, and you can get that experience in skirmish against the AI of different skill levels anyway," Pearce said when asked if he saw each map as a sort of puzzle.
"We wanted to make sure that the single-player was different. I mean, it's 29 missions: if you had to play 29 missions of 'build your base and sweep in and destroy things', it would potentially get very boring. We wanted to make sure it was engaging throughout."
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is due out for PC and Mac on 27th July.
