THQ's Warhammer 40K MMO, Dark Millennium Online "is going to be a masterpiece," reckons core games VP, Danny Bilson.
Speaking at E3 this month, Bilson said that the Vigil-developed online game is "very friendly to the WoW player" and even he as a WoW fanatic will be switching games.
"Have you seen it? The movie? I think it speaks for itself," Bilson told CVG. "I'm a diehard MMO player myself - going back to EverQuest. I've spent lots of time in WoW. As a WoW fanatic, I'm going to go right to 40K as soon as it comes out. It's very friendly to the WoW player."
"The brand is fantastic - it's so deep and so wonderful," he said. "There's just so much for us to play with. There's more vehicles in our thing [than WoW], the combat's completely different; you can get four guys in a tank and go.
"It's sensational. I believe within the next six months we're going to be showing playable sections of the game, not just a movie."
According to the THQ exec, the online game only needs to poach "a million" World of WarCraft players to be successful.
"They've got 14 million players! Gimme a million and I'm good! We're real good at a million, right?" He added: "We don't need everybody to migrate. We just need some of them - and I'm full confident we're going to get them.
"[40K] is stunning. It's going to be a masterpiece. It's been in development for three-and-a-half years already. It's got two more to go. Look at it." Go on then: Look at it.
Bilson said earlier this month he planned to 'shake up Blizzard' with 40K's E3 reveal. What do you guys think? Are you shaken?

Deathspank developer Hothead has revealed a new game called Swarm.
UTV Ignition will publish on "multiple platforms" in early 2011.
Swarm apparently combines "mass violence, micro-management and a sense of humour last found in the legendary Oddworld series". On paper the game sounds like Lemmings: steer as many of the 50 Swarmites to the end of the level as you can.
And there's plenty to prevent that happening: lasers, bombs, boulders and ledges are featured in the first video below.
Hothead's best known for soon-to-be-released action RPG Deathspank. That's due out 13th July on Xbox Live Arcade and 14th July on PSN.
However, high profile studio boss Ron Gilbert - the maker of Monkey Island - left recently under mysterious circumstances.

Square Enix has announced that the PC Collector’s Edition version of MMO Final Fantasy XIV will be released in Europe on September 22nd. The standard SKU will hit retail on September 30th.
The PS3 version of the game will not be released until March 2011, with pricing to be announced at a later date.
The PC Collector’s Edition includes a behind-the-scenes DVD, a special branded security token, a FFXIV branded tumbler, map, a travel journal including concept art, the Onion Helm in-game item, a 30-day free trial period for the game and a pass that allows a guest to play for free for a limited time.
The monthly subscription fee will be £8.99 (€12.99) with additional characters available for £2.10 (€3.00) a month. A maximum of eight characters can be registered on any one account.
Each account is eligible for one free retainer (a non-playable character that maintains item sales and storage when users are logged out) with each additional retainer costing £0.70 (€1.00).
A beta version of the PC game will go live some time in early July. It will become available to pre-order with key retailers at some point today. Those who pre-order will receive another in-game freebie – a pair of Garlond Goggles that increases the speed at which characters progress.
Those who register their FFXIII Campaign Codes will receive the Asuran Armguards DLC, an extra that improves the effectiveness of tools.
“This September, players around the world will join together to explore the fascinating and exciting realm of Eorzea,” the game’s executive producer Hiromichi Tanaka stated.
“We’re presenting players with a new style of online gameplay, that we know will please avid fans of online games, but welcome more casual gamers as well with the variety of gameplay and story-driven content.”
The specs for the PC version are as follows: Windows XP/Vista/7, Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz or AMD Athlon X2 2GHz, 2GB of RAM, 15GB HDD space, NVIDIA GeForce 9600 512MB or ATI Radeon HD 2900 512MB and DirectX 9.

News via http://www.aep-emu.de/
FreeCol is an open source project that aims to provide a free Colonization clone. FreeCol is released under the GPL.
Quote:
FreeCol 0.9.3 has been released.
We have just released FreeCol 0.9.3. This release fixes several bugs,
including a combat bug that made it possible to capture colonies that
still had armed defenders. The handling of keyboard accelerators was
improved in several ways. Keyboard accelerators are now available for
virtually all mapboard actions, including movement, a feature that was
requested by several users who use keyboards without a key pad. And
keyboard accelerators are now (optionally) localized.
FreeCol has had the ability to include graphical "mods" (bundles of
images that replace standard images) for some time now. But FreeCol
0.9.3 is the first release that actually includes such a mod, a bundle
of images for goods, ships and native settlements by "hutzli". Please
note that you will have to restart FreeCol after selecting a mod
before the setting becomes active.

Mozilla quietly posted the first beta build of its Firefox 4 browser early this morning. The 'Chromified' browser leaves a solid first impression with a few minor hiccups, but no surprises. If you have been using a previous version of Firefox 3.7, which now officially becomes Firefox 4.0, you should already feel comfortable with this new version. Mozilla has not posted detailed release notes yet, but there seem to be no major changes from Firefox 3.7a6-pre, with the exception that the browser is running more smoothly and with fewer crashes.

Just three days after adding plug-in crash protection to Firefox, Mozilla rushed out another release because people playing FarmVille on Facebook complained that their browser was shutting down the game. Although complaints about Firefox's quick killing of hung plug-ins were not limited to FarmVille, that game was the squeaky wheel that got the update grease. 'A lot of people play FarmVille. To ignore those people for any length of time could have a significant effect on Firefox's share of browser users,' said Firefox user Jeff Rivett on Bugzilla Sunday. 'The problem already existed, but the perceived impact suddenly changed, giving it a much higher priority

A sequel to THQ's excellent post-apocalyptic shooter, Metro 2033 is in development - and it'll be in 3D.
Speaking to CVG at E3, THQ's core games VP, Danny Bilson revealed the exciting news that Metro 2034 will make up four games from the publisher to use 3D tech, which includes the original game.
"We're showing Metro 2033 in 3D right now, which Nvidia is showing as one of their key demo products," he said.
"We're going to be doing a 3D version of that on Metro 2034 - the sequel. And there will be some engineering costs there, but that's in our lowest cost centre in the world. Those games are unbelievably reasonable, they're built in Kiev."
THQ also has 3D sequel, De Blob 2: The Underground on the horizon (it's out next March), plus a version of Saint's Row for the Nintendo 3DS.
"Some people were confused about why we'd go into a market where there's only one percent TVs," Bilson added. "It's about a great game and a plus up on the marketing side. We're there at low risk and high quality, but, again, we'll have to see how that market grows and what value is there."
Excellent news then. Metro 2033 owners can expect the game's first DLC pack, which adds new weapons, new achievements and the 'Ranger Mode' game rules, in "the very near future", says THQ.

Everybody will have a chance of winning in every game of StarCraft II they play, Blizzard has promised.
StarCraft II is an RTS. RTS games are harder than rocks.
But Blizzard's "goal" is to have 50/50 matchmaking in the upcoming real-time strategy game, which should help pair players up with those of equal skill level.
"There were some balancing issues when we first started the beta," lead producer Chris Sigaty told IGN.
"But our matchmaking has improved greatly since then. The ultimate goal is for 50/50 matching - all players should have a chance of winning in every game they play. We know that there are people out there who want to win all the time, but that's really no fun."
Sigarty warned players not to expect StarCraft II's single-player campaign, called Wings of Liberty, to teach them the mad skills needed to win at multiplayer.
Instead, the game will include challenges designed to give you a fighting chance.
"The single-player doesn't help with online much," Sigarty said.
"It just teaches the players the core basics - it doesn't try to tell them how to do it right. Beyond this, however, there are the challenges that will prepare players by helping them understand that having only eight units collecting minerals isn't enough, for example."
No matter how much time you put into StarCraft II, though, there will always be a South Korean who is better than you.
Game's out on PC and Mac on 27th July and it's looking aces.

FrankNFurter sends word of an internal Microsoft presentation leaked online today that contains details about Windows 8. The slides mention support for 3-D displays, connectivity upgrades, rapid startup times, and an integrated application store. Quoting Neowin:
"Consumers will be able to search on the web or locally on a Windows 8 machine to access applications from the store. Microsoft also details plans for application developers to help reach millions of users. One of the goals is to ensure licensing and monetization for developers is flexible with a transparent on-boarding process. It's clear that the 'Windows Store' will be a software service Microsoft provides and hosts fully in the cloud. The company will likely build the distribution model on Windows Azure to lure application developers."

After 8 years of development and a Cease & Desist from Vivendi, King's Quest fan project The Silver Lining is back in action. From their website: 'We are extremely happy to announce that our project, The Silver Lining, will definitely see the light of day! In a wonderful turn of events, Activision reached out to the Phoenix Online team a few months ago with a desire to revisit their decision regarding The Silver Lining. After negotiations, the C&D has been officially rescinded, and Phoenix Online has been granted a non-commercial license to release The Silver Lining! Our team is ecstatic about this, and as hard as we've worked for 8 years, it's the tireless belief and support of you, our fans, that has made this possible.' The first episode of the project is due to be released on July 10th

Art that appears to be from a horror game developed by Tomb Raider studio Crystal Dynamics has popped up on the internet.
Former employee Casey Holtz called the project a "third-person, survival-horror, openworld game" on his blog (via VG247). He shared sketches of monsters, environments and events, and used an editor to build and capture level layouts.
Commenting on his work, Holtz revealed a climbing mechanic similar to Tomb Raider. The game apparently follows a lone adventurer who explores ruins, subways and caves and eventually bumps into some hideous beasts.
Another ex-CD artist Joel Boucquemont offered much grander, scene-setting art. His work showed a devastated and deserted cityscape and some very dark environments.
Super sleuth Superannuation believes the game is called Downfall.
Crystal Dynamics apparently has two teams: one small gang working on the downloadable adventure Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and everybody elese concentrating on the pillar Tomb Raider instalments. At least, that's what the studio's Karl Stewart told Eurogamer in May.
So, this is the new Tomb Raider?

Sony Enertainment Online's vritual world Free Realms now boasts over 12 million users, with two million of those gained during the last four months.
The free-to-play MMO, aimed at younger gamers, launched last year - pulling 10 million users within just 10 months of existence.
While Sony has yet to release information on how many of those 12 million players are subscribing or paying for extra content, it's an impressive headcount for what has been a troubled sector of late.
Sony has also entered negotiations to bring the currently Western-centric title to China, which would likely mean a further boost in users.
SOE has been in talks with Chinese game distributors Tencent, Shanda Interactive and The9, according to 17173.com's interview with CEO John Smedley.
In the meantime, SOE is also working on Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, another child-orientated F2P play title, expected to be enormously successful thanks to its use of Lucasfilm's sci-fi license.

Facebook's 400 million users spend more than 16 billion minutes on the site every day, and view 1 million photos every second. That's prompted massive growth in the social network's infrastructure, which now encompasses more than 60,000 servers. Facebook's Tom Cook discussed how the company's operations team manages that growth in a presentation last week at the O"Reilly Velocity conference (video). The next day at Structure 2010, Facebook VP of operations Jonathan Heiliger said server and chip makers have 'come a long way' in supporting cloud platforms since he bashed them last year.
