A new study analyzing interactions among 300,000+ players in an online game universe, called Pardus, has for the first time provided large-scale evidence to prove an 80-year-old psychological theory called Structural Balance Theory. The research, published in PNAS, shows that individuals tend to avoid stress-causing relationships when they develop a society, resulting in more stable social networks.

Pre-orders for Blizzard's long-awaited PC sequel StarCraft 2 stand at 684,000 in the US alone, according to VGchartz.
The site predicts that this figure will rise to 750,000 by the time Tuesday's release date rolls around. VGchartz also reports that pre-orders for the upcoming Halo: Reach are currently 100,000 below those attained by last year's Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.
In related news, Blizzard has refuted a report by the Wall Street Journal that the strategy game's budget had surpassed $100 million.
"Activision Blizzard Inc. hasn't disclosed development costs for its Starcraft II videogame," the WSJ admitted. "A July 16 article incorrectly said the company spent more than $100 million to develop the game; that figure referred to its "World of Warcraft" game."
StarCraft II: Wings Of Liberty, the first of three planned boxed products for the game, launches on July 27.

Google said that it will be releasing a new stable version of Chrome every six weeks, which is about twice as fast as the release pace today. The goal is to make new features available when they are done and to make Chrome releases more predictable. Has anyone complained that there were too few new Chrome releases? Mozilla has been releasing a major new browser update twice a year and Microsoft is on an 18-24 month pace. Firefox's 4.0 Beta 2 is scheduled for release soon, and it appears that Mozilla is somewhat paranoid about the Black Hat Conference. 3.6.6 was planned to be the original 'Black Hat release'; now we are at version 3.6.7 and Mozilla has already a build candidate of 3.6.8 that will be released depending on news coming out of Black Hat.

Big news for Star Wars fans looking forward to BioWare's upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG — space combat has been confirmed for the game. Players will be able to fly around the galaxy in their own personal starships, avoiding asteroid belts, landing in dangerous territory and battling other vessels. The initial news makes it sound like a cross between Mass Effect's galaxy map and a traditional space fighting game, where players will have to find 'hotspots' on the galaxy map in order to enter a particular zone.

The Wall Street Journal has clarified comments it made recently that pegged Starcraft 2 with a $100m budget price-tag.
The publication incorrectly reported that Blizzard's highly anticipated RTS cost as much as Rockstar's own cash giant, Red Dead Redemption to develop.
The figure provided was actually for a small but popular online game called World of Warcraft, WSJ has said. Have you heard of it?
"A July 16 Technology article about the Starcraft sequel incorrectly said the company spent more than $100 million to develop the game; that figure referred to its "World of Warcraft" game," it said.
With the original price tag Starcraft 2 would have cost more than Rockstar's Western epic.
Blizzard today confirmed that reviews of Starcraft 2 will be held back until after the game's release on July 27.

Over the years many voices have declared PC gaming dead. We have seen developers abandon the platform for consoles, citing piracy as the cause. Game stores have slowly relegated PC games from prime shelf position to one tucked away in the back corner — even Microsoft dumped AAA PC game developers from the company. It seems, though, that the demise of the PC as a games platform has been exaggerated, because until very recently sales data ignored digital distribution, with the latest data released by US company NPD revealing that 48% of PC unit sales in the US in 2009 were digital. That translates to 21.3 million games downloaded in the US. Interestingly, although 48% of games were sold online, it only worked out as 36% of the revenue. This highlights the fact that it isn't just convenience that has PC gamers shopping online; it is also that games are generally cheaper than in stores.

With a few simple commands from the developer console, Alien Swarm can go from being played as an isometric top-down shooter to a first-person perspective. Surprisingly easy, it does make the game, which was released for free via Steam earlier this week, a lot more terrifying. But, anyone who is at home playing games like Modern Warfare or Halo should have no problem slaughtering their way through wave after wave of creatures. In fact, it poses the potential to make the game easier for people who would've otherwise struggled with the overhead view

There will be no reviews of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty before its launch on Tuesday next week, Eurogamer can reveal. All press will be experiencing it for the first time alongside the rest of you.
Blizzard was unable to offer an official comment at time of writing. However, we understand from our conversations with the developer-publisher that the new Battle.net service and its online features are so integral to the game that it would be both impractical and undesirable for press to review it before servers go live.
That, and designer Dustin Browder has previously confirmed to VG247 that the game will require a day one patch in order to give the famously perfectionist developer "a little bit more time to sort of get their ducks in a row."
Much of the multiplayer game has already been revealed via the recent beta testing phases. However, Blizzard has kept the game's campaign mode under tight wraps, offering no opportunities to play it outside of brief glimpses at preview events. The same goes for the challenge mode, intended to bridge the gap between the single-player and StarCraft's famously fearsome multiplayer.
So, expect our verdict as soon as we've played the game enough to be sure of it - but not before.
There will be launch events worldwide on the evening of Monday 26th July - including one in London, which we'll attend - and we understand servers will be turned on by midnight for those lucky enough to secure an early copy.
This will happen by time zone, too, so players and journalists in Australia and New Zealand will be the first to get a taste of StarCraft II, followed by Asia, Europe, and last of all North America.
Digital copies will go on sale at 10am on the 27th, so an old-fashioned box copy will be your quickest route to playing the game.
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty - the first part of a three-part sequel to the 1998 real-time strategy classic - has been in development for seven years. The Wall Street Journal recently estimated that it cost $100 million to make. It's Blizzard's first non-World of Warcraft release since 2003. It launches with the new Battle.net, an ambitious, and sometimes controversial, attempt by Blizzard to create an integrated online gaming and social platform. It could not be a bigger deal, basically.

Company of Heroes Online, Relic's freemium real-time strategy title, has opened up registration for its upcoming closed beta. To receive a code, applicants will have to make sure to check both "Receive News" and "Receive Offers" when making their account, as beta keys will be sent out using the opt-in mailing list. A post on the CoHO site states that a limited number of keys will go out in the first phase but that they'll "soon be announcing a partnership" to expand the beta.
For those uninterested in helping with the process of finding entrenched bugs, the full free-to-play title should be released this autumn.

Forbes reports that although videogames have long been thought of as distractions to work and education rather than aids, there is a growing school of thought that says game-playing in moderation, and in your free time, can make you more successful in your career. 'We're finding that the younger people coming into the teams who have had experience playing online games are the highest-level performers because they are constantly motivated to seek out the next challenge and grab on to performance metrics,' says John Hagel III, co-chairman of a tech-oriented strategy center for Deloitte. Elliot Noss, chief executive of domain name provider Tucows, spends six to seven hours a week playing online games and believes World of Warcraft trains him to become a better leader.

Major retailers across the US and UK are finalising plans to celebrate the launch of StarCraft II next week when Blizzard's latest - and long-awaited - real-time strategy hits store shelves.
In the US, the official launch event will take place at Fry's Electronics in Fountain Valley on Monday July 26, while GameStop is to open 3000 stores on that evening at 9pm allowing gamers to take part in costume and art contests.
The retailer is also running a promotion that will see anybody purchasing a copy of the game at midnight receive a GameStop Boost Pack, featuring savings on products from Alienware, NDIVIA and GameStop.
Meanwhile in the UK, GAME is to host the official launch event in London's Oxford Street store, with doors opening at 11pm local time. Gamers attending will be able to meet members of the game's development team and gave their game copies autographed.
StarCraft II was originally expected to be released last year, but now forms part of a busy period for the developer, which is also hard at work finishing off the Cataclysm expansion for World of Warcraft.

Female gamers spend $15 more per year on first-party purchases in social games than men, and twice as much on in-game money, according to a new survey by VGMarket.
North American women 25 and older are spending "disproportionately" higher amounts of cash on virtual items and currency, it claims. The median overall expenditure was $80 for females and $60 for males, although 78 per cent of 2221 respondents were men.
The survey also claims that 75 per cent of respondents have purchased digital goods within the last 12 months - although VGMarket only polled users of microtransaction sites PlaySpan, its subsidiary Ultimate Game Card and Facebook currency service Spare Change. Additionally, the survey was commissioned by PlaySpan.
Update - the 75 per cent statistic has now been removed from the survey, on the grounds that it only represents PlaySpan customers.
While the survey's methodology thus may not be entirely representative of online gamers' overall take-up of microtransactions, figures from within PlaySpan's ecosystem remain illuminating.
The average respondent spent 23.7 hours a week playing games, and during a year will play an average of 8.4 social network games and 17 iPhone/iPod Touch games.
Respondents buying virtual goods from the three sites spent more money per year on items for social games than for any other genre - $50 compared to $40 for MMOs, $40 for free-to-play games and $20 for console games with online play. Again, however, this figure may be influenced by the range of items and game support offered by PlaySpan and SpareChange.
Said Michael Gluck, VGMarket president, "The report demonstrates a number of significant trends and monetisation opportunities available to both first-party publishers and third-party marketplaces through the sale of digital goods.
"Each type of digital good has a unique level of demand, and the amount of money that a consumer spends on digital goods continues to vary widely by genre."

2K Games has picked the Steamworks set of developer tools for Mafia II and Civilization V.
Steamworks takes care of auto updates, DLC, Steam Achievements, statistics and so on. But being intrinsically linked to the Steam store means some digital distributors have, in the past, refused to stock Steamworks games.
Direct2Drive, Impulse and Gamersgate all forfeited the release of Modern Warfare 2 for precisely this reason. Will they do the same here? We'll see.
2K also announced the Digital Deluxe Edition of Mafia II, which is available for pre-order at "select retailers" and Steam now. The Digital Deluxe Edition offers extra in-game cars and suits; a digital art book; orchestral soundtrack and digital map of Empire Bay.
The Digital Deluxe Edition costs £40 on Steam. The Standard Edition is £30.

Dell has admitted culpability in replacing a number of server motherboards with virus infected components.
According to the Financial Times, the issue affected four lines of servers, the PowerEdge R310, R410, R510 and the T410, and Dell is in the process of contacting all buyers of the infected hardware, said to affect less than one per cent of Dell customers.
The motherboards had been infected with the W32.Spybot worm, which opens a back door on a system and degrades network performance.
“Anybody that we think could have the slightest risk we’re contacting right now,” said Dell’s general manager of server platforms, Forrest Norrod, blaming the faulty shipments on a “sequence of human errors”

The Lightspark project has released version 0.4.2 of its free, open source Flash player. According to Lightspark developer Alessandro Pignotti, the alternative Flash Player implementation is 'designed from the ground up to be efficient on current and (hopefully) future hardware.' The latest release of Lightspark features better compatibility with YouTube videos, sound synchronization support and the ability to use fontconfig for font selection. Other changes include plug-in support for Google's Chrome/Chromium web browser and support for Firefox's out of process plug-in (OOPP) mode, which was added in version 3.6.4 of the browser.

The sales gap between digital and boxed PC games narrowed during 2009 in the US, with digital downloads accounting for 48 per cent of unit sales and 36 per cent of revenue sales.
That's according to data from NPD, which revealed that 21.3 million PC games were downloaded digitally during 2009, compared to 23.5 million units sold through High Street and online retail.
Looking at the market share percentage of digital sellers in the US, SteamPowered.com holds the top position, followed by Direct2Drive.com, Blizzard.com, EA.com and WorldofWarcraft.com.
With casual online gaming portals, Bigfishgames.com, which recently passed one billion downloads, has the highest market share, followed by Pogo.com, Gamehouse.com, iWin.com and RealArcade.com.
NPD also noted an increase in iPhone and iPod's as gaming devices from the second to the fourth quarter of 2009 by 30 per cent.

Looking for a virtual metropolis in which your Sim can par-tay down? EA just announced the next expansion for The Sims 3, called the "Late Night Expansion." The add-on will include an "active downtown scene" where players can "become a local celebrity, member of a music band, mixologist, director, and more." You can also apparently become a vampire, but if the announcement trailer past the break is any indication, you'll just loiter around a lot of alleys. We imagine it's kinda like being a teenager ... forever.
The Sims 3: Late Night Expansion launches this fall.

July 21st, 2010, 00:10 Posted By: wraggster
Massively multiplayer online role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons Online will officially go free-to-play in Europe next month, Eurogamer can exclusively reveal.
Currently, the free-to-play version of Dungeons & Dragons Online, dubbed Unlimited, is exclusive to North America, although UK players have reported that they're able to access it directly from US servers.
Developer Turbine is also assuming full control of European operations from partner Codemasters Online.
"We are very excited to announce that Turbine will be expanding its operations and will assume full control of Dungeons & Dragons Online in Europe," Turbine told Eurogamer.
"Beginning 20th August, all European players can visit the official site to download and play the English version of DDO Unlimited with no monthly subscription required. Turbine's new German and French service will enter beta before the end of the year."
Turbine is working with Codemasters "to facilitate a smooth transition" to its new global service.
"We will be providing free character transfers to the new global service and players will be notified when the character transfer is available. Please note that all accounts will only be accessible through our English service until our new German and French services come online.
"As a thank you to our European players for their patience during this transition and to reward their loyalty, we are offering all current and former DDO Europe subscribers 5000 Turbine Points (nearly a €50/£42 value) when they transfer their characters. These points can be spent in the DDO Store on additional character slots, premium content, and much more.
"We thank Codemasters for the outstanding job they have done publishing and operating DDO in Europe and we look forward to continuing to deliver one of the world's best online entertainment experiences to the gamers of Europe."
The move comes as no surprise. In April, Warner Bros. Interactive bought Turbine, putting Codemasters Online's operation of DDO in doubt.
US DDO activity doubled at the beginning of the year following its re-launch in autumn 2009 as a free-to-play game.
Turbine said the re-launch attracted one million players and boosted revenues by 500 per cent. In May, the NPD Group said DDO was the third most-played MMO in North America.
