Viva Media is excited to announce the release of its newest adventure game, Alter Ego. Using gorgeous graphics and a compelling storyline, the game pushes adventure and mystery into new depths where right and wrong isn’t so clearly defined.
The year is 1894 and the recent grave robbing of a local aristocrat has sent the town into hysteria, inspiring a long string of subsequent murders. The desecration comes at a high cost given the significance of the enshrined Sir William “The White Beast” Lewis. His wretched past, stained by rumors of murder and debauchery, has tattooed itself onto the living memory of Plymouth and has caused many to speculate a supernatural explanation, suggesting Sir William, himself, has risen from the grave and killed those connected to his legacy.
You’ll play as both Inspector Briscol and pickpocket Timothy Moor, two men who couldn’t be more dissimilar: one is a man of law and justice and the other is a man who can slip into back alleyways, brothels, and lowly pubs, and yet they’re united by their common interest in solving the crime of the century. Let’s just hope they find the murderer before murder finds them!
Key Features
Original dark point & click adventure
Exciting storyline with complex characters
Beautiful cinematic scenes
2 playable characters
30 NPC characters
80 game locations
150 items to collect and combine

You could ask your kids to guess how much sugar, salt and/or oil their favorite foods contain – or you could watch them stuff their pizza, burgers or sodas into a virtual smashing machine and have them find out in a spectacularly fun way!
That’s the essence of Smash Your Food TM. Load up your fave food - guess the amount of goop it contains and then - stand back and pull the “smash lever!” Everyone can watch their food choice get slowly smashed into a flat, gooey mess (the squashed milkshake video rocks!).
The food drips into three jars as actual measures of sugar, salt, and oil. And from there, your kids can figure out how accurate their guess was. The game shows a chart that illustrates the difference between what someone of their gender, age, and activity level needs in a meal, and compares it to what they are actually getting. Smash Your Food is a great way for kids to have fun while learning about healthier and balanced food choices using vivid sound effects (“plink”, “tchh-tchh”, “glop”) and entertaining videos created by a team of 20 artists, game designers, videographers, nutrition experts, and educators.
“Smash Your Food is a compelling, fun way for our children to get important health information while having a blast,” said Marta De Wulf, Nutritionist and Co-Founder of Octave Media. “Best of all, there’s no mess to cleanup!”
Octave Media International serves up Smash Your Food, a deliciously healthy and funny game for kids ages 6 to 11 and parents to learn about their food choices. Smash Your Food is a finalist in the nationwide Apps for Healthy Kids contest for game developers which is part of Let’s Move!, First Lady Michelle Obama’s campaign to end childhood obesity within a generation.
Obesity rates tripled in the past 30 years, a trend that means, for the first time in our history, American children may face a shorter expected lifespan than their parents. The goal of Smash Your Food is to help children win their battles against weight issues and obesity by providing the tools and knowledge they need to make better choices about the foods they eat.
Kids, parents, gamers, and anyone interested in helping kids laugh while they learn about healthy food choices can visit www.appsforhealthykids.com and cast their votes for their favorite finalists. Voting is open until August 14th. If you want to learn more about Smash Your Food (and actually play the game and smash something!) before you vote, visit http://www.foodnme.com/smash-your-food/ with your kids.
Kids make their own food faces – and share them with their friends
Smash Your Food also lets kids have fun creating their own food faces with a lot of choices. Eggs for eyes? Banana for a mouth? How about a carrot for a nose? Kids can print their creative masterpieces, email them to friends, and post them on Facebook.
Smash Your Food is part of the Food N’ MeTM family of games with fun challenges, competitions, and animated videos. Food N’ Me also includes videos showing the Crazy Chef (yes, he’s a real person!) preparing healthy recipes for kids to watch and prepare themselves with parental supervision. Completely unsurprising news now, as your usual thieves and unsavory types have crawled out from the woodwork to capitalize on the launch of the biggest PC title perhaps ever, StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty. These "people" are sending out phishing emails in the hopes of getting folks' Battle.net account info, all under the guise of helping you get an activation key.
It comes with the territory: Battle.net and Blizzard's games are by no means impervious to these scams, nor have they been in the past, but Siliconera's example of one phishing email presents a pretty convincing ruse. Hopefully, in some small way, we can all help fewer people fall prey to this particular trick.

Free-to-play online building game Roblox has surpassed one million active monthly users on its website.
The company aims to attract both children and their parents to its website as it grows, providing an online space in which they can connect and share creative ideas.
"Most games aimed at kids are the traditional point and shoot videogames and don't allow them to be creative," offered David Baszucki, founder and CEO of Roblox.
"Everything on Roblox is generated by the player, and this gives the users a sense of ownership and pride that the traditional videogame does not. Roblox makes building fun. The learning is accidental."
The Silicon Valley-based company provides users with the ability to create and share their own unique game spaces, populating them with items from the available catalogue of buildings, clothing and vehicles.
The range of user-created games is broad, encompassing most traditional genres, as well as some homages to existing titles. Roblox offers premium, paid-for content available in the game's Builder's Club - which also allows players to make more than one game to share. The Builder's Club is currently priced at $5.95 (£3.78) with extended membership available from $29.95 (£19.04) to $199.95 (£127.11).

Hearts of Iron II, one of Paradox Interactive's seminal high strategy titles set in World War II, has been used by the University of California, Los Angeles, in its Political Science course.
The game, introduced to the academic world by student facilitator Einar Engvig, has been used in order to equip students with a better grasp of the Theory of Tripolarity and the general geopolitics of the world in the build up to WWII.
During the course the students were introduced to the game, before being split into teams of two and tasked with taking on an assigned nation, with those teams then attempting to play to their own objectives, either through aggression or diplomacy.
"In terms of game specifics, the countries assigned to students were Poland, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Italy, Japan, Argentina and Brazil," wrote Engvig in his course diary. "Poland went on the offensive and annexed Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia as well as Czechoslovakia; this has made most students very scared of them.
"Italy has struggled in Ethiopia and has not expanded much beyond this. Yugoslavia first took Albania and then was able to take half of Bulgaria in a peace treaty after an arduous war. Although it takes at least a year for this treaty to expire, Yugoslavia simply allied itself with Turkey, and the two countries split up Bulgaria and are planning the same for Greece.
"Turkey declared war on Persia and has struggled to annex the fledgling state. Japan has kept to itself in its war with China. I have told Japan that they have the ability to turn the tables in South America. Brazil and Argentina, interestingly enough, allied with each other immediately and have annexed at least three countries one after the other.
"However, I secretly spoke with the team of Argentina and they are in a panic, as they understand that their more powerful partner Brazil can easily turn the tables on them in the future. Needless to say, Argentina is feeling abandonment/entrapment fears, an alliance dynamic we have gone over during lecture/discussion."
Student feedback has appeared to be positive at this stage, with several non-gaming students claiming they will continue playing after their course is complete, while others believe the interactivity of the game has helped them to understand and recall important details more effectively.
"In particular, the class for Hearts of Iron was a perfect example of how interactive learning could be achieved," wrote one student. "By making the reading relevant to the simulation, those students who engaged in learning it, learned not only where individual countries were, but also the balance of power and politics in a tripolar system, as well as the rudiments of game theory and real politik."
Paradox Interactive has since published the next iteration in the series, Hearts of Iron III, as well as an expansion in the form of Semper Fi.

Linus has announced the release of 2.6.35 for people to download and test after he found not a lot of changes between this week and last. The big features to look out for include: 'Transparent spreading of incoming network traffic load across CPUs, Btrfs improvements, KDB kernel debugger frontend, Memory compaction and Support for multiple multicast route tables' as well as various performance and graphics improvements. Linus also praised the community saying that 'regression changes only' after rc1 improved this time around and gave numbers to back it up saying 'in the 2.6.34 release, there were 3800 commits after -rc1, but in the current 35 release cycle we had less than 2000.' Good to see the process is becoming more refined and controlled after the first release candidate — hopefully there's no impending burnout.

EA has admitted that there's still no sign of a release date for the PC version of DICE's hit downloadable shooter Battlefield 1943 and is issuing refunds to anyone who cancels a pre-order for the game.
Examiner reports that a reader, contacting EA's customer service about the game, was told that there was no information on its eventual release and it would be easier to offer a refund.
EA subsequently told VG247: "All pre-orders can be canceled with refund at anytime and we do not have any further information at this time about a release date for the PC version of Battlefield 1943."
Battlefield 1943 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in July 2009. A PC release originally planned for September last year was pushed back into "early" 2010 and then quietly disappeared.

StarCraft 2 is causing graphics cards to overheat in some systems, Blizzard's confirmed.
Since its release a week ago many gamers have flocked to the internet to report the overheating issue, and now the StarCraft house has offered an official solution.
"Certain screens make your hardware work pretty hard," the developer said in an update.
"Screens that are light on detail may make your system overheat if cooling is overall insufficient. This is because the game has nothing to do so it is primarily just working on drawing the screen very quickly.
"A temporary workaround is to go to your Documents\StarCraft II\variables.txt file and add these lines:
frameratecapglue=30
frameratecap=60
"You may replace these numbers if you want to."
Has anyone on here experienced this problem?

August 2nd, 2010, 22:02 Posted By: wraggster
At regular intervals, gamigo and Reakktor Media will introduce and shed some light on some of the features of the upcoming space action MMOG Black Prophecy. Last time we introduced the modular ship-building system, today we'll talk about crafting.
Crafting components and ship modules requires different resources, parts and blueprints. Once all the pieces have been acquired, items can be created using a "constructor", which is found in the workshop of each space station.
Resources and Parts
There are three types of resources in the game: metal, plasma and gas. Metal is extremely important for crafting ship modules, weapons and other items. Plasma is primarily used as a source of energy during crafting. Gas is an important resource needed for the production of high-performance computers and for operating hyper-space jump drives.
There are a number of ways players can gain resources. Destroyed spaceships become space junk from which a certain amount of resources can be salvaged. Resources can also be collected during successfully completed missions. The type and amount of resources to be had depends on the level of difficulty. The largest deposits of raw materials, known as resource stations, are conquered and controlled by clans.
Parts such as CPUs, steering units or energy sources are sold by merchants or stolen from enemy NPCs.
Blueprints
Blueprints are found in the wreckage of old ships and contain all the information needed to produce an item. They specify how much of each resource and what parts are needed. Once a module has been crafted successfully, the blueprint cannot be used again. If crafting fails, all the resources and parts used will be lost, but the blueprint will remain intact. The apex of any crafting project would be a critical success, which increases the quality of the crafted item greatly.
The Constructor
Besides producing ship and station modules, players can also modify, repair and enhance these. There are also optional items players can use during the production process to increase the likeliness of success or to shorten crafting time, for example.

SNAIL GAMES USA today announced a partnership with premier gaming portal Kongregate to distribute Snail’s upcoming MMO title Ministry of War (MoW) to Kongregate’s world-class community of 10 million gamers. Funny Bear Studio today announces World Riddles: Seven Wonders 1.0, a new casual game that delivers over 200 thought-provoking nonogram puzzles, presented as a fascinating journey to the world of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. The game comes as a sequel to the year 2009 commercially successful World Riddles: Animals. Offering the same nonogram-solving experience of its popular predecessor, but now with entirely new variations of puzzles, visuals, music and storyline, World Riddles: Seven Wonders is a fun and addictive brainteaser players could lose themselves in during leisure time.
In World Riddles: Seven Wonders, players set out on a journey to the world of ancient civilizations with the goal to restore the Seven Wonders Medallion. To collect all seven pieces of the medallion, gamers will visit the Seven Wonders of the World such as the Lighthouse of Alexandria, statue of Zeus, Colossus of Rhodes and other places where they’ll be tasked with solving number-based logic puzzles known as nonograms or griddles. Players will be challenged to do 200 logic puzzles with a varying level of difficulty, which will keep them interested in the game. Throughout the journey, gamers will also learn many historical facts about the Seven Ancient Wonders.
Each puzzle in the game features a grid with tiles, concealing some design. The design is made from globes. The player needs to uncover the hidden design with a certain number of possible mistakes. On the top and left side of the grid are numbers that tell the player how many consecutive globes are to be uncovered in that particular row or column. For example, if the number is 5, then there are five globes clustered together in that row. The challenge comes into play as the gamer must uncover the design on a large grid with many cells and small numbers.
At the end of each puzzle, players are rewarded on their performance, which includes how many hints have been asked for and how many failed attempts it took to uncover the hidden design. If players manage to do all puzzles of the level quickly and without errors, they are rewarded with the golden piece of the Medallion; otherwise they get a silver one. The level can be replayed to get a golden piece instead of a silver one. Besides, completion of each level unlocks a bonus mode that challenges the player to solve a sequence of puzzles within a limited time.
The game also offers many mini-games that range from piecing together a mosaic to putting missing objects to proper places on the picture, aligning pipes and restoring the family tree of some god. For example, there is a mini-game in which the player needs to assemble a puzzle depicting one of the feats of Hercules.
World Riddles: Seven Wonders 1.0 is available for the Windows PC. For additional information and news about the game, please visit http://www.funnybearstudio.com/worldriddles2.html
The trial can be downloaded from http://www.funnybearstudio.com/files...dles2Setup.exe (26,4 Mb)
