Cloud-gaming service OnLive has announced it is to scrap its planned monthly $4.95 charge entirely.
OnLive charges users to buy temporary or permanent access to its streaming games for PC and Mac, but has suffered criticism for its high pricing.
The removal of the subscription fee follows an offer to scrap the cost for a year for early adopters and also means new users may sign up without having to enter payment details.
This means the service now operates in a free trial mode, enabling non-paying users to try out demos and watch other users' games.
"We're delighted to be able to offer the OnLive Game Service without a base monthly fee on an ongoing basis," said OnLive CEO Steve Perlman.
"There is no precedent for OnLive, so we had to grow to a large number of active users in order to assess usage patterns and operating costs. We've arrived at that stage, and as we had hoped, we are able to operate OnLive without charging a fee for access."

Almost one year after the introduction of Windows 7 it appears that the hype surrounding it has faded. The overall market share of Windows has turned into a slight decline again. Windows 7 is gaining share, but cannot keep pace with the loss of Windows XP and Vista. Especially Windows XP users seem to be happy with what they have and appear to be rather resistant to Microsoft's pitches that it is time to upgrade to Windows 7.

The last time Blizzard mentioned their new Real ID system, there was a strong backlash from users over privacy issues. Blizzard reconsidered their plans to require real names for forums, and little has been heard about it since. Now, they've announced new privacy settings, allowing users to limit how their name gets shared or to disable the system entirely. Quoting: 'These options provide Real ID users with additional tools for customizing the service based on their preferences, enabling the ability to opt in or out of the Real ID "Friends of Friends" and "Add Facebook Friends" features or to turn off Real ID altogether.

News via http://www.aep-emu.de/PNphpBB2-file-...c-t-15645.html
DXX-Rebirth is an OpenGL-port of Descent I+II. Supported platforms are Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. A new version was released today to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the project.
Quote:
Hello folks! Today, September 28th 2010 marks a big day for DXX-Rebirth.
Not only is it the 5th birthday of the project, it’s also the day of the release of v0.56 which was in the works for 20 months! Last but not least you surely have noticed that the website has changed as well. I hope you like it.
But first things first.
It’s the fifth anniversary for DXX-Rebirth. While it was only a small hobby for me in the beginning and for almost two years I rarely even worked on it, it somehow survived – growing. I never expected that, but I am very proud of it as well. I admit I always work very slowly (20 months for one release… gosh) and my lunch break times surely will some day crush the borders of the space-time continuum, creating a paradox which will swallow the whole universe (or at least this galaxy).
But you trustful players out there are my biggest motivation besides my love for the games in general. This is why I invested a lot of work into this v0.56 release.
So here is what you all have been waiting for – the most important changes of this release:
Totally rewritten UDP code for Multiplayer – including LAN Netlist, Packet-loss prevention and many improvements
All game parts now are window elements (you should not notice this but it’s a huge code improvement)
Improved Music playback compatibility. Missions can now have their own descent.sng, using HMP, MID, MP3, OGG and AIF
Extended Jukebox-feature to play your own music
D1X-Rebirth now supports D1 Shareware, Destination Saturn, 1.0/1.4/1.5 game content
D2X-Rebirth fully supports D2 Demo, Destination Quartzon, 1.0/1.2 game content
Improved demo recording. Views will always be correct in newly recorded demos, no matter how you jump through the demo. Descent 1 will record open/blown doors correctly when demo starts (all backwards compatible)
Bug in Joystick reading fixed. Game should now support more Joysticks, buttons and axes than you can ever operate in your state of evolution.
INI/command-line option added to use CAPSLOCK and NUMLOCK as normal keys
FPS-based damage/screen-shaking of Fusion cannon fixed
Old homing projectiles have been restored and now are FPS-independent
Code has been improved so it should now compile on way more *NIX-like operating systems
The game can optionally be compiled with/without IPX and/or UDP support
Movies are now always displayed in correct aspect ratio
The game will automatically detect supported resolutions of your system configurations and offer them in RESOLUTIONS menu
Ability to dynamically load AddOn packs
Tons of fixes and other improvements

September 29th, 2010, 23:53 Posted By: wraggster
Newly released today
features•The undead are everywhere creating a dynamic and challenging zombie-killing experience for the player as weapons will be created to kill massive amounts of zombies at one time!
•A new protagonist, Chuck Greene, is just the beginning in a long list of new characters, new survivors and new more vicious psychos that will be introduced to fans in the new world of Dead Rising
•Co-op play is introduced to the Dead Rising universe for the first time as players can invite their friends to partner up with them at any time to take on the zombie massacre- tag-team style! Play with a friend and have even more fun as you lure zombies in using strategic items like a toy helicopter or a firecracker. Once the zombies have gathered, your friend can rain bullets from above or shoot at a strategically-placed gas tank to create a deadly explosion that will take out masses of the enemy. Killing zombies with a friend is always more fun!
•Allows 4 players to compete in a gladiator type show that pits zombies against a group of players in the ultimate Vs. multiplayer blood bath
•Players can combine two everyday items using duct tape to create the ultimate zombie killing creations such as the Portamower and Paddlesaw. Unlocking combo cards along the way will give players the advantage as the helpful cards will show you what items are best for combining. The more zombies you destroy using your creative combo’s, the more Prestige Points you can earn which levels up Chuck along the way
descriptionDead Rising 2 will deliver more of the signature gameplay that the series is known for plus a number of new features.
Players who might need some help or simply want to share the zombie bashing fun with a friend will now be able to play in online 2-player co-op. Simply use the in-game transceiver to call for assistance at any time and once your partner has accepted, they will arrive by your side for double the action.
With hundreds of zombies on screen at any one time, the original Dead Rising forced gamers to take everyday objects they found in the Mall and use them as weapons. But now, in Dead Rising 2 with thousands of zombies filling every square inch of Fortune City, Chuck is going to need to be even more resourceful and inventive by creating combination weapons to save the day. Players will be able to take two objects, a roll of tape and with a little inventiveness create an advanced zombie-killing combo weapon - a piece of wood and a lawnmower become Portamower, the handheld mower that cuts zombies down to size in an instant; while a garden rake and car battery combine to create an electrified zombie prod. The more combo weapons a player uses, the more Prestige Points (PPs) they will gain along the way in order to level up Chuck.

The USA has begun a test of its cyber defences, testing how government departments and organisations including banks and power suppliers would respond in the event of a web-based attack.
Thousands of participants are taking part in the Department of Homeland Security’s Cyber Storm III, a three-day exercise simulating a large-scale cyber attack on the US’s critical infrastructure.
“Securing America's cyber infrastructure requires close coordination with our federal, state, international and private sector partners,” said DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano. “Exercises like Cyber Storm III allow us build upon the significant progress we’ve made in responding to evolving cyber threats.”
The goal of the test is to determine and strengthen the country’s preparedness for such an attack.
Cyber Storm III involves seven government departments, 11 American states, 60 private sector companies across sectors including banking, water, power and IT, and other countries including the UK.
Earlier this year, Kaspersky Lab CEO Eugene Kaspersky told PCR the current state of cyber attacks was “like a civil war on the internet”. “Now the situation is very dangerous. The global economy depends on the internet,” he said.

Command and Conquer 3: The Forgotten, a massive mod made by an 80 person team spread across 13 countries, went viral yesterday after its release. What's still more interesting is how quickly Command and Conquer developer Electronic Arts jumped on the project, with Lead Designer Samuel Bass writing, "It’s amazing what people with dedication can do," and highlighting the new faction, full campaign and new Full Motion Videos. After the flop of Command and Conquer 4 last spring left the pioneering RTS series with an uncertain direction, developer Electronic Arts promised to return with a more fan-centric approach. Are huge fan-developed projects with publisher support the future, especially with Blizzard similarly backing mods for its games, or are corporations too reluctant to give up their turf?"

"We are pleased to offer gamers a high-quality controller for the release of Final Fantasy XIV, which will improve the gameplay feel of this great RPG saga on PC," said Sunflex MD Mike Steup.
Pics of the controller are below. Squeenix released the Collector's Edition of the hotly anticipated FFXIV MMO yesterday. The bog standard version's out on 30th September.
Eurogamer's Rob Fahey went hands-on with the game last month and insisted it was "something radically different".

Microsoft expected Internet Explorer 9 to be popular, but after more than two million people downloaded the IE9 beta in the first two days after its release, the software giant is having a hard time choosing which eye-popping statistics to cite. Microsoft says its "Beauty of the Web" site, which illustrates the aesthetic advantages of IE9's support for HTML5 and hardware acceleration, has had more the 9 million visits and 26 million page views since the IE9 beta launch on Sept. 15. Microsoft's developer-oriented IE Test Drive Site has had 4 million page views during the same period.
