If you want a working Commodore 64 in your home, but would also like something that you could actually use as a computer, somehow there's now a product to fit your needs. The new Commodore 64x looks as much like the beige wedge of old as you could ever expect, but has an Intel Dual Core 525 Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, and an Nvidia Ion 2 graphics chipset.
Though it's now a PC in C64 clothing, it's also designed to run the original software, using either an emulator or a custom Workbench 5 operating system, both of which are included. No release date or price information has been announced yet, but you can stare at pictures of the prototype in our gallery while you wait for information on your new Impossible Mission machine.

Korean developer GamePix is to utilise the Kinect sensor in a new PC title - a massively multiplayer online game created for the local market, but made to "resemble console games".
Speaking to website IncGamers, GamePix's Jason Lim indicated that, "Currently in MS, there are many game companies that are trying to apply for this system."
New game Divine Soul will apparently feature combat similar to one-on-one beat 'em-up Tekken, although it's unclear if that aspect of the game will also use Kinect. "The game's support of gaming pads make it resemble console games even more, and is scheduled to support Kinect," said Lim.
"We added PvP combat mode among the contents in online games. In fact, we do believe that this certainly has an advantage as an online game since many players can fight in a tournament and global tournament will be also available," added Lim.
It is unclear whether GamePix will attempt to release the game in the West or if Microsoft will sanction the use of Kinect by PC developers outside of the Asian markets.
However, Microsoft has so far been relatively supportive of hobbyist use of the Kinect sensor and also recently promised to offer support for the device in XNA games.

Microsoft has announced a major update to the Play Smart, Play Safe website, in an attempt to provide parents with more practical advice on children's' use of videogames.
Now in its third year, the Play Smart, Play Safe campaign attempts to explain aspects of the games industry such as age rating and parental controls, while providing answers to frequently asked questions from parents.
The website includes content from "family ambassadors" - real families blogging their gaming experiences and offering advice to others. There is also general advice and explanation of PEGI ratings, hints for using parent controls, "tips for teens", discussion forums with independent experts, and interactive quizzes such as Do You Know Your Gamer?
A new survey by the site shows that a majority of 77 per cent of UK parents are familiar with videogame ratings but only 25 per cent directly set parental controls on consoles and computers.
When asked what additional functions they would like to see in games one-in-five parents suggested the ability to "make enquiries and access additional information about content their children are accessing".
A total of 41 per cent requested the ability to ban individuals or service providers from contacting their children, 31 per cent wanted more advanced functions to limit gameplay time, and 26 per cent wanted to be able to limit what content children bought online. 31 per cent asked for the ability to control and monitor TV and film content through a console.
"I commend the Play Smart, Play Safe website to anyone seeking advice on videogame activities," Microsoft's Neil Thompson.
"Whilst it's pleasing to see that such a large number of parents in the UK are familiar with videogame ratings, there remains a striking gap between knowledge and action. So Microsoft's hope is that the Play Safe, Play Smart website will continue to be an important information hub for parents seeking clear, up-to-the-minute advice on safer gaming issues."

Microsoft last week killed the Office Genuine Advantage anti-piracy service that first checked — and later nagged — whether customers were running legal copies of Office. ZDNet blogger Ed Bott first reported on Microsoft's move after a tipster pointed him toward a support document on the company's site. That Dec. 17 document simply noted that Office Genuine Advantage 'has been retired,' but offered no explanation. A Microsoft spokeswoman told Computerworld on Monday, 'The program has served its purpose and thus we have decided to retire the program.

Four out of every ten internet users play online casual games, making for a total of 510 million gamers, according to a new report published by casual games portal Spil Games.
The firm has released a "2010 State of Gaming Report" based on data from comScore and the portal's own 130 million monthly active unique users. As a result Spil Games claims that twice as many users worldwide play online casual games as bought a games console in 2010.
Other highlights from the report include a breakdown of the most popular gaming categories among different demographics. Among girls the most popular subjects were "make over", "hairdressing" and "horses"; among women it was "quiz", "puzzle" and "time management". For teenage boys it was racing, sports and action.
The most popular categories with Europeans were racing and skill-based games, but for Americans the preference was for daily quizzes. "Competition, achievement, control, and showing off" were found to be the key attraction for teenage boys, who also indicated that communication during play was a key feature. Although girls in general left the most comments the most talkative were Italians, followed by the Dutch, Spanish, Russians and Americans.
Spil Games claims that its sites, which include games.co.uk, girlsgogames.co.uk and agame.com, averaged 400 million games a month or more than 150 new games every second. A total of 5 billion games were played in total during 2010.
"This year we've really seen casual gaming come of age," said chief marketing officer Oscar Diele. "We've pioneered the introduction of HTML5 as the technology of choice for mobile gaming, and we expect phenomenal growth in this sector in 2011. To think that five people a second are opening one of our games is, frankly, astonishing. It's great to know that the entertainment we provide is reaching so many."

Online game streaming service Gaikai has insisted that rival outfit OnLive's recent patent on cloud-based gaming does not threaten its existence.
CEO David Perry told VentureBeat, "We share OnLive's vision that streamed gaming is a key element of the future of the video game industry. We do not expect the general concept of remote gaming to be patentable, as many of us played remote games in the 70's, 80's and 90's.
"Neither Gaikai nor OnLive were the first to develop technology in this area," he insisted.
OnLive's patent, granted last week, covered "apparatus for video gaming includes a box having a slot with an interface that connects to a game card providing a platform to run a software videogame".
Perry went on to explain that Gaikai operates in a completely different way to its competitor. Whereas OnLive is selling a microconsole through which you can stream full games, Gaikai is focusing on embedding demos and trial versions of games in a website.
"With regard to OnLive's new patent, we are not concerned with making set-top boxes, which is the focus of OnLive's patent," he explained, "because from the beginning we decided to go frictionless and not require a specific hardware configuration.
"As a consequence, you are witnessing the evolution of two companies with notably different business models."
Another OnLive rival, Otoy, has also chimed in, echoing Perry's stance. CEO Jules Urbach told VentureBeat, "We respect the valid intellectual property rights of others but we'd be surprised to see a valid patent issue today that would preempt the entire field of server-side rendered gaming. This kind of technology has been around and well known since at least the '90s."
The OnLive microconsole has just gone on sale in the US, with a European launch planned next year.

Cloud gaming provider OnLive has secured a patent for an 'apparatus and method for wireless video gaming.' The patent gives substantial leverage for OnLive over competing brands in the cloud-based gaming market. 'Hundreds of people have worked incredibly hard for more than eight years to bring OnLive technology from the lab to the mass market, not just overcoming technical and business challenges, but overcoming immense skepticism,' said OnLive CEO Steve Perlman. 'It is gratifying to not only see people throughout the world enjoying OnLive technology in the wake of so many doubters, but also receive recognition for such a key invention.

There's no Scandinavian-themed video this time around, but Opera Software has just released the final, non-beta version of its Opera 11 web browser, which promises a couple of big changes and a slew of other more minor refinements. Among the biggest additions are what Opera calls "tab stacking," which lets you create groups of tabs to manage dozens of open web pages a bit more effectively, and "visual mouse gestures," which is sort of like mulitouch gestures but -- you know -- with a mouse. You'll also now get extensions, along with a new and improved (and "safer") address bar, and a so-called "mail panel" that's basically a built-in email client. Head on past the break for the complete press release, and hit up the link below to start downloading.

Game-streaming firm Gaikai has refuted suggestion that OnLive's recently-revealed cloud gaming patent might present a problem.
"We share OnLive's vision that streamed gaming is a key element of the future of the video game industry," said Gaikai boss David Perry in a statement to VentureBeat.
"We do not expect the general concept of remote gaming to be patentable, as many of us played remote games in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Neither Gaikai nor OnLive were the first to develop technology in this area."
Perry observed, however, that Gaikai had its own cloud-related patents, and had "been careful to avoid technology where we think that other companies may develop valid patent rights."
He was adamant that Gaikai and OnLive presented fundamentally different offerings, specifically observing that "we are not concerned with making set-top boxes, which is the focus of OnLive's patent, because from the beginning we decided to go frictionless and not require a specific hardware configuration."

Independent testing company NSS Labs recently published a report on the ability of popular browsers to block socially engineered malware attack URLs. The test, funded by Microsoft, reported a 99 percent detection rate by Internet Explorer 9 beta, 90 percent by Internet Explorer 8, and 3 percent by Google Chrome. However, Google doesn't entirely approve of this report's focus and conclusions. According to Google not only didn't the report use Chrome 6 for the tests, the current version is Chrome 8; it also focused just on socially engineered malware, while excluding vulnerabilities in plug-ins or browsers themselves. Google defended its browser by claiming that it was built with security in mind and emphasized protection of users from drive-by downloads and plug-in vulnerabilities.

Google has opened the Chrome Web Store, offering apps, software and extensions for the web browser - including over 200 games.
Currently the marketplace is only available to US users, but the store is already supported by numerous games companies, including Electronic Arts, Zynga, Digital Chocolate, Jagex, Spryfox, Bigpoint and Namco.
EA's chief operating officer John Schappert revealed a new version of popular casual title Poppit - to be bundled free with Chrome 9. "With Google's Web Toolkit, we can supercharge classics like Poppit into state-of-the-art HTML5 games for this new gaming platform," he said.
The store divides games into various categories - Arcade, RPS and Role-Playing, Sports, Virtual Worlds - and features titles such as FIFA Superstars, Knightfall: Death and Taxes, War of Legends, Plants Vs Zombies and Fancy Pants Adventure.
"The web has become an incredibly powerful platform for innovation, allowing users to do much more online than they ever imagined," offered Sundar Pichai, VP of product management for Google Chrome.
"The Chrome Web Store showcases the power of the open web and we're excited to have several gaming titles from EA as a part of it."
The Chrome Web Store is HTML-5 based and operates on top of the Chrome web browser. It was first announced in May this year.

Microsoft says it will offer a privacy setting in the next version of Internet Explorer that will make it easy for users to keep their browsing habits from being tracked by advertising networks and other third-party websites. 'By designing these sorts of enhancements with privacy in mind at the design phase, we're able to deliver a functionality that provides consumers additional levels of control over what they want to engage in and how they choose to do so,' Microsoft Chief Privacy Strategist Peter Cullen blogged. Previously, Mozilla stopped working on a similar feature for Firefox after pressure from advertisers and other OSS projects as it would hurt their revenue sources from advertisers

December 8th, 2010, 00:41 Posted By: wraggster
Google has delayed a much anticipated branded laptop powered by its Chrome operating system until next year.
Instead of a Chrome OS device for general release, Google announced a pilot programme aimed at people who "live on the web".
Chrome OS is Google's boldest bid yet to erode Microsoft's market dominance with Windows software.
Google has already gone after one of Microsoft's cash cows, Office, with Google Docs.
Chrome marks a departure in traditional operating systems, offering a light touch approach to controlling a computer's hardware and applications.
It also targets users who spend most of their time on the web and are comfortable relying on the cloud to access their data.
"We think cloud computing will define computing as we know it," said Eric Schmidt, Google's chief operating officer.
"Finally there is a viable third choice for an operating system."
Google's head of product for Chrome, Sundar Pichai, said the pilot scheme is aimed at early adopters, developers and users who are used to using beta software.
They will be given an unbranded black notebook that has been dubbed Cr-48.
Mr Pichai said there would be no devices on sale until next year simply because the software was not ready for prime time, due to a number of bugs and unfinished features.
"This is a profound shift," said Mr Pichai, claiming that the operating system is Google's attempt to "re-think the personal experience for the modern web".
"Chrome is nothing but the web," he added.
Machines for the pilot scheme will start shipping soon.
Consumer devices from Acer and Samsung are due on the market in 2011. No pricing details were given.
Features
At the press event in San Francisco - in front of a crowd of journalists, bloggers and analysts - Google also outlined a number of features in Chrome OS.
Microsoft recently announced a big rise in profits due in large part to Windows
Security was at its heart, with automatic updates for users taking away the need to constantly ensure that the latest version has been activated.
The company said that it hoped to be the first to ship a tool called "verified boot" on Chrome OS devices, which makes sure nothing on the machine has been modified or compromised.
"We are confident that when we ship Chrome notebooks, it will be the most secure OS ever shipped to users," said Mr Pichai.
He also said that because data will be accessed through the cloud, users could loan their machines to other people.
"By delivering nothing but the web, it makes it very easy to share your computer," said Mr Pichai.
Google said it has also partnered with telecom titan Verizon to offer connectivity with Chrome notebooks.
The plans range from 100 MB of free data, to $9.99 a day for unlimited data.
There will be no contracts, no activation fees, no overage fees or no cancellation fees.
Concerns
A number of analysts have questioned whether or not Google is making a smart play with the Chrome OS, given that the computing world has changed dramatically since it announced plans for the low-cost operating system over 18 months ago.
Anticipation was high for Chrome OS devices to arrive before the end of the year
In the last year, Apple's iPad has reinvigorated the tablet market, and Google's own Android OS - which powers smartphones - has taken off.
Android is also being used in tablet devices and netbooks, prompting a number of industry watchers to question Google's twin approach in the OS market.
Many fear two Google operating systems will cause confusion for consumers.
Google's Mr Schmidt does not believe it will, and recently stated that Chrome is for keyboards and Android for touch based devices.
The Chrome OS will be given free to hardware manufacturers.
Microsoft, in comparison, charges a fee for its Windows software.
Back in October, the software leader said Windows sales increased by 66% on a year earlier, to $4.8bn, helping to boost first quarter profits.
Browser growth
At the event, Google also revealed that the number of users of their Chrome browser has grown from 70m this summer to 120m.
During a demo, Brian Rakowski, the company's director of product management for Chrome, emphasised the speed of the browser.
He showed how fast Chrome is at loading documents, from a 30-page comic book to the 1990-page Healthcare Reform Bill.
Both demos took a number of seconds, and Google said that thanks to enhancements like a tool called Crankshaft, Chrome is 50 times faster than browsers of two years ago.
"The most important thing is it's all going to be really, really fast," said Mr Rakowski.
The team also emphasised security on Chrome - the most important area according to Mr Pichai, who announced automatic updating.
"The bad guys have it easy on the web these days," he said, because users do not update their browsers frequently enough.
Google also unveiled a Chrome web store to help bring users and developers together.
There are over 500 applications available now, ranging from games to newspapers to books.
Apple said in October it would open an app store for MacIntosh computers, in an effort to replicate its success in apps sold for the iPhone.

OnLive intends to move into the business of movies on demand according to reports.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the cloud gaming platform will offer up a subscription based movie streaming service at some point next year.
That should go nicely with the platform's primary offering, then, of streaming AAA games to devices that really shouldn't be able to play blockbuster titles at all.
The cloud gaming device got a monthly subscription plan at the beginning of the month but there's no news as yet as to whether the inclusion of movies will add extra cost.

A new paper from researchers at Verizon Business identifies a method through which an attacker can bypass Internet Explorer Protected Mode and gain elevated privileges once he's successfully exploited a bug on the system. Protected Mode in Internet Explorer is one of a handful of key security mechanisms that Microsoft has added to Windows in the last few years. It is often described as a sandbox, in that it is designed to prevent exploitation of a vulnerability in the browser from leading to more persistent compromise of the underlying system. In their research, the Verizon Business team found a method that, when combined with an existing memory-corruption vulnerability in the browser, enables an attacker to bypass Protected Mode and elevate his privileges on the compromised machine (PDF). The technique enables the attacker to move from a relatively un-privileged level to one with higher privileges, giving him complete access to the logged-in user's account.

Google on Thursday patched 13 vulnerabilities in Chrome 8 (stable), and debuted Google's built-in PDF viewer, an alternative to the bug-plagued Adobe Reader plug-in, and included support for the still-not-launched Chrome Web Store. The 13 flaws fixed in Chrome 8.0.552.215 are in a variety of components, including the browser's history, its video indexing and the display of SVG (scalable vector graphics) animations. Next up: Adobe and Google have collaborated to put the Flash Player plug-in inside a sandbox within the dev build of Chrome, an effort by the two companies to better protect users from attacks

This is Mass Effect 2, running on a netbook -- a stock Eee PC -- with a single core Atom CPU that wouldn't dare to dream of actually processing the game. It works because the sci-fi opera's not taxing that silicon at all, but rather a beefy server miles away, streaming processed and compressed video frames direct to the 10.1-inch screen. It's called Gaikai, and if you're thinking it sounds just like OnLive by a different name, you'd be half-right. However, this streaming game service has a radically different business model which doesn't cost players a dime. Rather than provide a library of titles and charge you for on-demand, Gaikai will power game advertisements that let you actually play their games. If that sounds like an idea you'd like to hear more about, then we've got a treat for you. We spoke with founder David Perry about what the service can do, got an exclusive hands-on with the closed beta, and an extensive video walkthrough to boot. After the break, find the whole scoop.

New Scientist says the Microsoft touchscreen produces a real texture using pixel-sized shape-memory plastic cells that can protrude from the surface.
The report says this tech has been attempted before by firms like Senseg in Finland, but that some of the frequencies are in the audio range, so a buzz can be heard.
Microsoft proposes using a layer of plastic placed above the touchscreen to distort the surface when different wavelengths of ultraviolet light strike the pixels from beneath.
Initially this would be for table-sized computing displays rather than phones or tablets.
