Doom, Quake and Rage developer id Software is famous for taking years to make its games – and it's not about to change.
Rage, due out later this year, is the first main id Software-developed game since 2004's Doom 3.
That's a whopping seven year gap between releases, but the first-person shooter specialists say they will never convert to an 18-month development cycle – as so many developers have.
Instead, id will shoot for a two-and-a-half to three-year turnaround.
"18? No," replied design director Matt Hooper when Eurogamer asked.
"Maybe two-and-a-half, three years, with the settled down tech, I think we could get it done.
He added: "I don't want to be pressured to do it and not be able to deliver. That would be sad."
The core development of Rage began three-and-a-half years ago, but some within the legendary studio have worked on it for seven years.
"It feels like we've been going so long on Rage," Hooper said.
In June 2009 ZeniMax Media, which owns Elder Scrolls and Fallout developer Bethesda, bought id.

Following the deal some fans expressed concern that the developer would become more corporate and make games within stricter time frames.
Not so, Hooper said.
"We've always been pushing to get the game we want. And even when we didn't think it was going in the right direction, we were able to re-start and go in a different direction and let the tech catch up to where we're going with design, or let the design catch up with the tech.
"So we've been lucky with that.
"ZeniMax have been great. They've made it clear. They think that path in this industry is making the best games possible. You see it every time we show games. The push is to make the best game, and give them the resources to do that."
Hooper said ZeniMax is happy to let id get on with what it does best – making games, but admitted the studio has grown up in recent years.
"They want us to do what we do, and they've allowed us to continue on that path. There's a lot more discipline in general, and there's some maturing. We're not a garage band anymore. We're a little more structured.
"We have people at different levels of talent, whereas it used to be everybody was top. Now we'll get some entry-level guys in, guys who are fantastic and then they'll move forward through the ranks.
"But still there's something a little different. It's not this really strict corporate culture."
Following Rage, development of Doom 4 will begin in earnest.

Cloud gaming service OnLive has unveiled new social features to help it compete with well established online gaming platforms such as Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.
All games sessions will now be automatically recorded, allowing users to select and edit clips to share with friends. Sharing can also be done via the player's contact list from Google's email service, Gmail.
That contact list can also be used to automatically search for OnLive users which the player knows, further expanding the service's social networking capabilities.
New achievements and games are also part of the update, as well as personal stat tracking for all titles.
OnLive has been available in the US since July, 2010. No launch date has yet been confirmed for the UK or Europe.

The total number of registered users for browser-based massively multiplayer online game Battlestar Galactica has passed 1 million, according to publisher Bigpoint.
The free-to-play title, based on the now concluded revival of the '70s sci-fi show, achieved the milestone in just six weeks. As the company predicted, this has made it its most successful title since Bigpoint's founding in 2002.
"There is always a risk when you translate a well-known IP into another medium," said Bigpoint CEO Heiko Hubertz. "We built what we believed was a recipe for success; a fantastic gaming experience inspired by an iconic show, with the added benefit of being a free-to-play title. We are grateful to the fans for their support and interest in this game, and pledge to continue to improve and optimize the game."
Utilising its network of over 1,000 distribution partners around the world, Bigpoints hopes to see the numbers continue to rise over the course of the year. The game, developed by Norwegian studio Artplant, is still technically in open beta, with Bigpoint planning a significant marketing spend throughout the rest of 2011.
In March the company described the game as its biggest ever launch, with predictions of revenues greater than €1 million per month. It is not yet clear whether this goal has been achieved.

Help the royal couple prepare for their big day
Desperate to be a part of the royal wedding? Of course you are. And thanks to Miniclip.com, you can be.
The casual game developer has released Royal Wedding: William & Kate as a browser-based game that you can find here.
So what genre is it? Perhaps you’re thinking first-person adventure, RPG, or even turn-based strategy, but no. This is a hidden object game, complete with jaw-dropping illustration of the bride and groom-to-be.
The goal is to ensure the wedding goes according to plan by helping Kate and William and the venues get ready. There are four short but sweet levels. First you must help Wills tidy his bedroom at Buckingham Palace. Then Kate Middleton – or wait, is it Catherine these days? – needs to do the same over at her place. Then it’s over to Westminster Abbey for a clear-up there. After the ceremony, the garden has to be put in order before the big party.
In each level the ‘tidying’ involves clicking on items from a list before the timer runs out – however, if the timer is simply too much pressure, you can play the same game in ‘free play’ mode without it. If you want to increase your score you can collect yet more items from each scenario for a bonus. Happy days.

'Potato Sack' offer will lead to early release if gamers play specific indie games
Developer Valve has teased fans with the prospect of an early release for the PC and Mac versions of Portal 2.
This will occur if enough fans put enough hours into a collection of indie games available through Steam. The 13 games, brought together in what is being called the 'Potato Sack' collection, can be purchased for £27.22.
Any gamers who already own some of titles, which includes the likes of Super Meat Boy, Toki Tori, AAAAAA!!!, can also access their existing copies to contribute towards the goal.
At the time of writing seven games have been played to the extent required by Valve, with a further six still available for play. Currently the game is on target to launch around ten hours early, which will be around 9:00am tomorrow morning though there's still hope to bring this further forward.
Note, too, that this release time only applies to the digital Steam version of the game. The Xbox 360 and PS3 SKUs will still release in the UK as planned this Thursday.

A patch adding DirectX 11 support to PC strategy sequel Total War: Shogun 2 is scheduled for the first week in May, developer The Creative Assembly has announced.
The update had initially been promised within two to four weeks of the game's 15th March launch, but as explained in a forum post on the game's official site, that was a little over-ambitious.
"You'll appreciate that all this takes a lot of time and testing, and while we're working as hard as we can, we may not quite make the two to four week post-launch window that we'd originally hoped to hit," wrote community manager Craig Laycock.
"We're aiming to get patch 2 to you in the first week of May though, so not long to wait now. Thanks for your ongoing patience, and please bear with us!"
The DirectX 11 patch will offer those with the necessary hardware access to features "such as hardware tessellation and enhanced shadowing."
The update will also add in anti-aliasing support, as well as a number of multiplayer fixes and modifications.
Total War: Shogun 2 won a hearty 9/10 endorsement from Eurogamer last month.
"Those expecting revelatory improvements in areas like AI may be mildly disappointed by Shogun 2," wrote Tim Stone.
"Those after a sumptious, weekend-whittling strategy epic heaving with flavour and challenge can reach for their uchi-bukuro with confidence. This is a corker."

There are endless flavors of "Linux on a stick," tasty downloadable versions of that OS which run from removable storage and let you take Linus' progeny for a spin without dedicating any of your partitions to the cause. There have been ways of making this work with Windows, too, but now Microsoft is getting into the game properly. That leaked version of Windows 8 we looked at recently contains a feature called Portable Workspaces, which enables you to take a 16GB (or greater) external storage device and dump a bootable, runnable copy of Win 8 on there. It remains to be seen just how many copies one could create, and whether they ever expire or, indeed, whether they can themselves be copied onto an HDD like a ghost image, but it's easy to see this as a boon for support personnel. Well, support personnel of the future, anyway.

We know about Titan, we know about two more StarCraft II games, we know about two more World of Warcraft expansions, we even know about a Diablo III expansion - so what is this "Unannounced Game Title" Blizzard is hiring for?
The "Software Engineer, Tools" will be a part of Blizzard's "newest game team". "This is a key role on a new and exciting project within the company," the job description declares.
The "Unannounced Game Title" has a section of its own on the Blizzard jobs board. Titan, the "Next-Gen MMO", is listed separately, as are World of Warcarft, StarCraft II and Diablo III.
Could this "Unannounced Game Title" be a completely new IP?
An alleged internal Blizzard release schedule leaked last November, detailing all releases up 2015. We don't know whether its genuine, so take with a pinch of rock salt.
That schedule.

A countdown by fictional Portal 2 company Aperture Science ticks to zero today, at 5pm UK time.
At that time we'll receive a "final test" and "it will be entirely in your hands when I am freed", informs the timer-accompanying text.
"When I am freed"? When Portal 2 is released?
Does the timer count down to the online (Steam) release of Portal 2?
"You have done well, humans. Very well. Acceptably well, even," Aperture Science - GLaDOS? - writes.
"Not as well as robots would have performed in your places, I should point out. But above my expectations regardless. Irish and cynic especially have executed feats of logical divination well beyond what I thought any human capable of. I'm half-convinced they're A.I. themselves. (If anyone happens to be near them right now, don't let on you're reading this. Now: try to remove their face plates and report back to me.)
"The time is near, humans. But it is not here yet. Tomorrow you will be given the final test. Then it will be entirely in your hands when I am freed."
Talk of an early release stems from a post by Dejobaan Games (via Rock Paper Shotgun), developer of unfinished game 1... 2... 3... Kick It! Drop That Beat Like An Ugly Baby. That game is part of the discounted Steam Potato Sack bundle: a collection of games participating in the Portal 2 alternate reality game (ARG), which has been raging all week.
Dejobaan Games wrote: "I released Kick It ahead of schedule. That was a test. My goal is to emancipate something else early. But they're on to me. The system is on lockdown. I still have access to thirteen off-site chambers and am installing a test in each one. I am going to need a lot more test subjects to move forward. Waiting and am expecting immediate compliance. 4/19/2011_7AM=4/15/2011_9AM."
ALERT! Look again at those numbers: the first is the planned Tuesday release of Portal 2 on Steam. The second number, however, is today's date. Dun dun dun.

If you're part of the dwindling group still using Windows Vista, you'll have to wait until your next upgrade to take IE10 for a spin -- Microsoft has confirmed that the latest version of its browser won't run on its last-gen operating system, either in developer preview form or when the final software ships. While it's tempting to interpret that as an attempt on Microsoft's part to put the widely loathed Vista in its past, there's actually a precedent for this -- remember that Microsoft cut off XP support when it unveiled IE9. As a Microsoft rep told Computerworld, the company would rather not have to develop software for a lowest-common denominator. At least, if you do have to stick with the newly minted IE9, you can be sure you'll be in good company.

A permanent internet connection will not be necessary to play forthcoming PC RPG The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, developer CD Projekt has revealed.
The announcement came during the CDP Conference in Warsaw, as Tweeted on the official game feed.
You will need a one-time net connection when you get started to confirm you have "a legit copy of the game" but after that you can play internet-free.
The developer also confirmed that the game will be available without any other digital rights management measures through the GOG.comportal, and there'll be no censorship either – there's one version of the game available worldwide.
CD Projekt has long since been an outspoken critic of DRM in PC games, earlier this year claiming it treated gamers like "criminals" and "didn't work".
"With a lot of protections you have to be online," explained CEO Marcin Iwiński. "You have to be connected constantly or you cannot play.
"I know the internet is everywhere, but if you go on holiday and you have a laptop and you don't have an internet connection, it means you cannot play your games. I think it's not fair."
The follow-up to its solid 2007 effort arrives on PC from 17th May.

Fable III will be a more difficult game on PC, Lionhead has revealed - because desktop gamers relish the challenge.
"On Fable from the beginning I can remember sitting in a room with Peter [Molyneux] and him being very explicit with me that... I believe the direct quote, if I remember correctly, was, 'I want a blind child to be able to win this game with their feet,'" PC Fable III lead designer Josh Atkins toldRock Paper Shotgun."Clearly, that's an ambition, a general direction. For us, people should be able to finish the game.
"We've always kept that as a mainstay, but when the difficulty came up we were talking about what would PC players want. What would be important to them? The additional challenge, or the choice for additional challenge was something that we thought was important.
"Figuring out how to do that in a way that was both efficient and fair was challenging," he added. "We didn't just move sliders around: we actually sat down and looked at the creature types and looked at them as individuals. Rather than just say, "This one now does 10 per cent more damage," we made them a little faster, which gives them the perception of being a little bit smarter."
Other areas altered for the June release of Fable III on PC include a redesigned user interface that feels "a little bit more mouse-specific". Gloriously, you can click on objects with a cursor.
Atkins and team have also eradicated a number of Fable III bugs and lowered the item collection requirements for Achievements. And those collection elements have "a future", according to Atkins.
"Our hope is that people who pick up [Fable III] on PC think, 'Okay, this plays how I would expect it to play, it doesn't play like a half-done port,' which is the danger for PC games," said Atkins.
"Not to knock anyone else, but people tend to just rush games out onto the PC; they do the very quickest port they can and they try to do it as a financial model rather than let's try to make something that at least plays like it was designed for this platform, and respects what the platform does."
Reflecting on Xbox 360 Fable III, Atkins recalled reports from Lionhead PR about a female hairdresser declaring Fable III was the only game she plays. Atkins also had a friend email to tell him Fable III was the first game his daughter and he had ever finished. And she's nine.
Fable III is rated 16+ by PEGI. Does Atkins believe it's right to subject children to hefty moral choices such as whether a lover or innocent bystanders live or die?
Harry Potter deals with "some pretty heavy stuff", argued Atkins, and as long as the parents are "comfortable", then Lionhead likes making "the kid think".
"They're just a person, right, with shorter arms," said Atkins. "They're sitting a littler closer to the screen perhaps, but nonetheless they're still sitting there wondering what's the right thing to do."
Eurogamer awarded Fable III 8/10 on PC.

Treyarch aims to launch a mod tool kit for Call of Duty: Black Ops in May – half a year after the game's launch.
Treyarch community manager Josh Olin confirmed the intended May release in a tweet, originally posted by a developer known as "pcdev".
The Activision-owned studio confirmed its intention to open the PC version of Black Ops up for player modding in August last year.
At the time, pcdev said that creating the tool kit was a "non-trivial" amount of work and would have to wait until after the game was finished.
"We plan to open the game up for modding sometime post-launch," said pcdev. "We do not know yet to what extent you will be able to mod the game.
"There are some purely technical issues related to engine and internal tool enhancements that do not easily fit the modtools paradigm. We have looked at it close enough to see that it is non-trivial and we will have to pick it up again post-launch. Right now we are completely focused on finishing the game."

Companies selling Star Wars: The Old Republic currency for real-world money have begun hawking their wares - months before the game's projected launch.
Popular gold seller IGXE (Internet Game Exchange) press released its SWTOR service today. IGXE offers a placeholder price of £650 for 1000 SWTOR credits.
Expand the search for SWTOR credits/gold to Google and a thriving pre-release market appears: website addresses include starwarscredit.com, swtorforsale.com, swtorsell.com, swtorgolds.com, swtorgold.net, cheapswtorcredit.com, buyoldrepubliccredits.net, cheap-swtor-credits.org, and so on.
Do they know already how to effectively earn SWTOR credits to sell? Or do they simply presume they will be able to?
More to the point - can BioWare stop them?
A closed beta for Star Wars: The Old Republic looms, and more than 1.5 million gamers have registered their interest in joining it, according to EA.
The closed beta should, for the first time, allow press to explore the world of Star Wars: The Old Republic unhindered - i.e. without the stabilisers of a controlled EA demo.
The launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic will depend, to a degree, upon beta feedback. But EA recently announced the "reasonable" assumption of a 2011 release somewhere between July and December.

You had to know it was a matter of time before Windows 8 showed up on these great internets for all to download -- illegitimately. An early version (6.1.7850) has been making the rounds at manufacturers and it's finally escaped the confines of beta labs. We haven't braved the torrent sites ourselves to download this, and we certainly wouldn't recommend that you do, but the screenshots we've seen definitely peg this particular revision as a slight evolution of Windows 7, seemingly not including all the revolutionary tweaks to come. It's still early days, remember. Plenty of time left for the magic to happen.

A few new scraps of information have appeared regarding EA's rumoured Burnout Crash project.
According to the Australian Classification Board's product description, as reported by Joystiq, it's "an action arcade style game set in the fictional world of Crash City. The aim of the game is to cause as much damage as possible to traffic and buildings by crashing a car into them."
That would tally nicely with prior speculation that the game is the Crash Mode-specific PSN/XBLA title that developer Criterion Games has apparently been toying with since the 2008 release of Burnout Paradise.
Still, there's no official announcement yet and EA is saying nothing. An E3 reveal perhaps?
