The total number of registered users for browser-based massively multiplayer online game Battlestar Galactica has passed 1 million, according to publisher Bigpoint.
The free-to-play title, based on the now concluded revival of the '70s sci-fi show, achieved the milestone in just six weeks. As the company predicted, this has made it its most successful title since Bigpoint's founding in 2002.
"There is always a risk when you translate a well-known IP into another medium," said Bigpoint CEO Heiko Hubertz. "We built what we believed was a recipe for success; a fantastic gaming experience inspired by an iconic show, with the added benefit of being a free-to-play title. We are grateful to the fans for their support and interest in this game, and pledge to continue to improve and optimize the game."
Utilising its network of over 1,000 distribution partners around the world, Bigpoints hopes to see the numbers continue to rise over the course of the year. The game, developed by Norwegian studio Artplant, is still technically in open beta, with Bigpoint planning a significant marketing spend throughout the rest of 2011.
In March the company described the game as its biggest ever launch, with predictions of revenues greater than €1 million per month. It is not yet clear whether this goal has been achieved.
