While we've had access to Adobe's Flash Player 11 in beta form for months, the company announced it will finally get official, along with Air 3, next month. Among the many new features included are support for accelerated 2D and 3D graphics with a claimed 1,000 times faster performance than Flash Player 10 and Air 2. That's enough to enable "console-quality" gaming on both computers and connected TVs and on mobile devices (Android, iOS, Playbook) with a pre-release version of Flash 11 (a production release you can take on the go is expected in "the near future"). Other new options include allowing developers to package Air 3 along with their apps in a single install, HD video quality on multiple platforms including iOS, DRM for video rentals, 64-bit support and more. Check out Adobe's pitch to developers with a press release and demo videos after the break, including a look at the hit iPad game Machinarium which was built with its tools.

A closed beta for Blizzard's long-awaited action RPG sequel Diablo 3 has just gone live, the developer has announced.
The first wave of invitations are in the process of being sent out, with more participants to be added later on in the test.
Should you be lucky enough to get the nod, you'll be able to play through part of the game's first act as any of the game's five classes - barbarian, witch doctor, monk, demon hunter or wizard. You can also go toe-to-toe with the Skeleton King, meet up with key characters in the Sanctuary and tinker with the game's skill and crafting systems.
If you want a shot at taking part you'll need to create a Battle.net account and sign up there.
"This closed beta test is an important milestone for us as we enter the final stages of development on Diablo 3," commented Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime.
"Our goal is to create the best action role-playing game experience to date, building on everything we've learned since the release of Diablo 2 and incorporating the powerful features of the new Battle.net platform. We hope players enjoy participating in the beta test and we look forward to hearing their feedback."

You'll forgive us if we're highly speculative about code supposedly unearthed from the leaked beta client for Valve's upcoming action RTS, Dota 2. It supposedly includes information from a folder named "ep3." Now wait a minute, stop huffing -- we know, we know -- and hear us out. As reported by Valve fan site Lambda Generation, the Dota 2 beta client has apparently leaked via Vietnam, and eager fans datamined the code for info, apparently plundering a string of code regarding something called "ep3."
As you might imagine, both the dataminers and gaming websites are saying the folder pertains to the comically nebulous Half-Life 2: Episode 3, with the code pointing to two weapons -- an ice gun and a flamethrower -- as well as three "weaponizers" (concrete, liquid, and metal). But wait, why would Valve leave code for another one of its projects in the beta code for Dota 2, especially a project that it refuses to acknowledge exists? In short, Valve's done some similarly cheeky things in the past to promote its games, albeit not nearly as deep as this would be. We've reached out to Valve for word, but don't expect to hear anything official.

Star Wars: The Old Republic will be "the last large scale MMO to use the traditional subscription business model", according to Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley.
In recent months several large MMOs have gone free-to-play, most recently SOE's own DC Universe Online, and Smedley unsurprisingly thinks this is the way the whole MMO genre will go.
"We see some very interesting trends in subscription gaming," he said in a GamesIndustry editorial piece.
"In our cancellation surveys for EverQuest II, fully 40 per cent of the people that fill them out list subscription fees as one of the primary reasons they quit. Economic times are hard out there and a recurring subscription is something that glares at you from a credit card bill every month. For some people, saving money starts with getting rid of subscriptions that hit the credit card every month."
He went on: "It's fair to say that subscriptions are likely going to be a strong component of revenue for the foreseeable future, although I don't believe they will be remotely as dominant over time."
Smedley goes on to say BioWare's upcoming MMO, while almost certain to be successful, could be the last of its kind as a major MMO using the old subscription model.
"There's another large juggernaut coming out soon in Star Wars: The Old Republic from EA/Bioware. That's a game that I think has a legitimate shot at a 2 million subscription user base and I believe they will stick with the subscription method," he said.
"In my opinion this is going to be the last large scale MMO to use the traditional subscription business model. Why do I think that? Simply put, the world is moving on from this model and over time people aren't going to accept this method. I'm sure I'm going to hear a lot about this statement. But I am positive I'm right."
Have you been coaxed into trying an MMO for the first time recently after hearing about it going free-to-play? And more importantly, have you gone back to it to keep playing?

One of the most hyped games of next month has slipped until November – on PC at least.
Warner Interactive has confirmed that the PC version of Batman: Arkham City will not be released alongside the console versions on October 18th. Instead, it will now be released some time in November.
No reason was given for the delay.
Warner has previously confirmed that Arkham City will support both stereoscopic and anaglyphic 3D. A range of different pre-order bonuses are available to consumers depending on which retailer the title is pre-ordered from.

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford is on record as saying that June'sForever wouldn't be the last we'd see of Duke Nukem, and the studio is now seeking feedback on the game, presumably as part of its planning for Duke's next outing. You don't even need to have played the game to give your feedback - it appears Gearbox is as interested in why you didn't - and the survey only takes a few minutes. We'd fill it out ourselves, of course, but we assume Gearbox already knows our thoughts.

Zynga's latest Facebook game, Adventure World, draws no little inspiration from the Indiana Jones films, and the developer has now announced plans to add Lucasfilm's iconic adventurer to the game next month.
"Time to hold onto those fedoras," reads a post on the company blog. "We have a runaway boulder of excitement to share.
"Adventure World: An Indiana Jones Game will be coming soon to a browser near you. Adventure World unlocks a whole wide world of exploration, discovery and puzzle-solving fun, and the world just wouldn't be the same without the icon that defines adventure as we know it."
Adventure World, described by Zynga as its "most feature-rich" game so far, launched on Facebook earlier this month. At the time of writing, it has almost 6.7 million monthly active users according toAppData, 4.4 million of whom return every day.

You don't need a PhD in economics to realize that times are pretty tough right now -- especially for those at the lower end of the income ladder. Fortunately, though, Microsofthas announced a new initiative aimed at providing one million students from low-income families with discounted hardware, software and broadband service. This three-year digital inclusion program is an extension of Redmond's Shape the Future campaign, which, over the course of five years, has already put computers in the hands of more than 10 million underprivileged children around the globe. Under this public-private partnership, Microsoft will work with a variety of nonprofit, corporate and governmental organizations to provide low-cost PCs, educational software, job skills training and high-speed internet to those who need it most. The ultimate goal, of course, is to bridge the achievement gap dividing students with at-home internet from their less digitally-equipped peers. According to the Federal Reserve, children who don't have online access at home graduate high school at a rate that's six to eight percentage points lower than those who do. Inflating national poverty rates and widening income gaps probably won't do much to remedy that discrepancy, but we're certainly hoping that Microsoft can make a difference.

The Sims Social now has 50 million monthly active users, according to social game analytics site AppData.
Developed by EA and Playfish, The Sims Social was officially launched last month, immediately attracting almost 5 million players.
Since then, the game's audience has grown exponentially, picking up an extra 15.5 million players in the last week alone to reach51.5 million MAUs.
"When we created The Sims Social, it was important for us to incorporate the deep gameplay nuances The Sims Studio has perfected and leverage what Playfish does best - develop compelling, cutting-edge social-gaming experiences," said Playfish London general manager John Earner at the time of its launch.
The Sims Social is now the second most popular social game behind Zynga's CityVille, which has 74.1 million MAUs. However, recent figures suggest its popularity is waning, with 1.3 million users leaving the game in the last seven days.

Microsoft's battening down its hatches, and restricting distribution of Metro-style apps to its Windows Store. Developers and enterprise customers (as well as Win32 desktop apps) get the slide this time 'round the OS reboot, with continued and unfettered access to sideloading on the platform. The decision, much like Apple's approach to iOS, falls in line with Redmond's current Windows Phone 7 app policy, leaving the wild, wild west of unpoliced apps to users of Android's open-source ecosystem. Of course, it's only a matter of time before denizens of the interweb's shadowy underworld hobble together a means of bypassing MS' security measures, and open the floodgates to nefarious apps. We're still waiting to get our hands on those Win8 slates, but in the meantime, look forward to a curated experience.

While cloud streaming service Gaikai can be controlled with a variety of devices, CEO David Perry told Gameindustry.biz that he intends for the company to come up with a controller of its own. "I have my own ideas for what a controller needs to be," he said. "I've been collecting controllers to demonstrate my point on what needs to be done. I've been starting to look into how that can be made at a sensible price as it's quite a complex device, so we'll see. But for the minute our plan is to support as many things as can be plugged in or go through Bluetooth. Whatever your favourite controller is."

Sony Online Entertainment is to make DC Universe Online a free-to-play game from October.
Both the PC and PlayStation 3 versions of the game will require no initial purchase, with SOE splitting access to the game into three levels - Free, Premium and Legendary.
While the initial game is free, extra content through DLC and microtransactions will be available to purchase. Players who have already spent $5 in-game before DCUO goes free will get access to the Premium level, offering additional character and inventory slots and higher cash limits, while the Legendary level charges $14.99 per month and includes all DLC packs at no extra cost.
"When we launched DC Universe Online, we introduced a very different brand of massive online game driven by fast action combat to PC and PS3 gamers and with that, we discovered a new type of online gamer," commented John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment.
"We've listened to our community, and we've determined that the free-to-play model is the best fit for DC Universe Online."

John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment, has said that there's still a strong case for subscription-based online gaming, and he believes that BioWare's forthcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic can hit 2 million monthly subscribers.
SOE itself is dropping subscriptions and taking its titles free-to-play - today it revealed that DC Universe Online will be free on PC and console in October - but despite that move Smedley still has faith in his peers at Bioware.
"It's fair to say that subscriptions are likely going to be a strong component of revenue for the foreseeable future, although I don't believe they will be remotely as dominant over time," Smedley wrote in an exclusive opinion piece for GamesIndustry.biz.
"There's another large juggernaut coming out soon in Star Wars: The Old Republic from EA/Bioware. That's a game that I think has a legitimate shot at a 2 million subscription user base and I believe they will stick with the subscription method.
Economic times are hard and a recurring subscription is something that glares at you from a credit card bill.
John Smedley, Sony Online Entertainment
However, he does believe that The Old Republic will be the last big MMO to use subscriptions successfully.
"This is going to be the last large scale MMO to use the traditional subscription business model. Why do I think that? Simply put, the world is moving on from this model and over time people aren't going to accept this method. I'm sure I'm going to hear a lot about this statement. But I am positive I'm right."
Subscriptions are such a burden for gamers that 40 per cent of players cite subs as the primary reason for quitting EverQuest II, according to Smedley.
"Economic times are hard out there and a recurring subscription is something that glares at you from a credit card bill every month. For some people, saving money starts with getting rid of subscriptions that hit the credit card".

Phantasy Star Online hit some kind of magical sweet spot back in 2000. Though its spinoffs and followups kept much of the formula from that release, there was always something that felt off about them, and prevented some fans (like me) from getting fully into them.
It turns out that maybe those games were hewing too closely to the first PSO, because the new Phantasy Star Online 2 feels significantly different from its predecessors in action, and seems to have paradoxically recaptured the PSOexcitement by doing so. It definitely hits all the right notes, but the mechanics have actually been upgraded. Can you believe it? Of course, the bummer about this is that it's a currently Japan-only, PC-only game.

Yeah, we knew it was possible, but knowing and seeing are two very, very different animals. Just before closing the doors at Build 2011, Microsoft's Avi Ben-Menahem took the time to briefly showcase what would be possible with Xbox Live and Windows 8. It's obviously in a very early state, but already we're seeing signs of cross-platform multiplayer game support, and an (unsurprisingly) Metro-style universe supplanting the existing Games for Windows Live. We get the feeling that Microsoft's thinking this one through; rather than just shoehorning a gaming element in, things like "cloud saves" and dedicated Music / Video panes will be around to enjoy. Moreover, participation in the Xbox Live development program will purportedly be free, and if Ben-Menahem has his way, this will bring "everything you know and love on Xbox 360 and Xbox Live to Windows." Bold. Peek the pair of videos just after the break.

BioWare's iconic role-playing game Knights of the Old Republic will be half-price, £3.50, on Steam this weekend.
It's part of a weekend-long Steam Star Wars deal timed to coincide with the Blu-ray release of the Star Wars Saga.
Other discounted Star Wars games on Steam include Battlefront II, Republic Commando and Empire at War.
Knights of the Old Republic reinvigorated the Star Wars licence for gamers. It's set thousands of years before the Star Wars films. You are a mysterious stranger with no memory of your past. You escape an attack on your rescuer's ship, and your subsequent mission to rescue a Jedi marks the beginning of an epic tale.
Eurogamer called Knights of the Old Republic as "the best Star Wars game since X-Wing and/or Tie Fighter, if not ever". Kieron Gillen's Knights of the Old Republic review for Eurogamer awarded a delicious 9/10.
The success of Knights of the Old Republic lead to a sequel (developed by Obsidian) and to BioWare's biggest ever project, MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. The success of KOTOR also helped bring about the Mass Effect series of games, which share many similarities.

EA boasts that The Sims Social has redefined the Facebook games market.
The franchise has gone from being one of the top-selling boxed games to also become one of the biggest social online titles in less than a month.
Over 40m monthly active users have flocked to the new Facebook game, The Sims Social, making it bigger than Zynga’s FarmVille. The Sims is second only to CityVille on Facebook which currently has 75m monthly active users.
EA-owned developer Playfish worked on the social networking title at its London studio. The publisher acquired the developer in 2009 in a $300m deal.
Playfish founder and co-GM Kristian Segerstrale told MCV: “The Sims Social is a huge leap forward in the evolution of social games.
“In bringing one of EA’s most popular game franchises to Facebook, Playfish and The Sims team have redefined the meaning of social in video games.
“By combining Playfish’s expertise and passion for social play with the deep creative heritage of The Sims franchise and the insights of its creators, we feel we’ve brought something very special to life – and tens of millions of players around the world have responded with extraordinary enthusiasm over the last few weeks.
“We’re looking forward to working with players to evolve the game and its features in new and exciting ways in the coming months and beyond.”
