Anticipated dungeon crawler Torchlight 2 has a minor update to its launch window, with Runic telling RunicGamesFanSite.com that the title is expected to launch during November or December ... unless "someone on the team dies." That's a far more calamitous caveat compared to what Runic told us when we checked in with the studio a couple weeks ago.
"We're still definitely on track for 2011, but have to hit all our internal milestones before we can lock in a date," Runic community maven Wonder Russell told Joystiq. "With a team this small, if one of our three programmers gets the flu, we could be screwed."
Torchlight fans should be sewing pillow suits of armor and force-feeding the devs their Flintstone vitamins, just to make sure that the $20 co-op dungeon crawler makes it out this year.

A collective of indie developers has bundled over 300 games together into the IGF Pirate Kart. The compilation came about as a way for the developers to share the $95 entrance fee for the Independent Games Festival, removing the barrier to entry for less polished, more experimental game ideas.
"People are entering the games that they are proud of, but not "big" or "polished" or "real" enough to be worth the entry fee." writes indie developer Mike Meyer on the IGF Pirate Kart website.
"The pirate kart represents a different side of indie games, one that I think is far more interesting -- and one that's maybe not so easily represented in the IGF," says VVVVVV developer and Pirate Kart contributor Terry Cavanagh. "That's why I'd love to see a pirate kart enter the festival. Not as a protest, but with complete sincerity."
You can download the 1.36GB worth of games and try them for yourself by following the source link below.

Players of PC MMO Lord of the Rings Online have been warned about a ‘security issue’ on the game’s forums.
Developer Turbine issued a statement informing gamers that some of their accounts may have been breached. The game itself remains unaffected.
“Recently, we were made aware of an issue with the security of our LOTRO community web applications,” read a statement on theLord of the Rings Online forums. “We take all potential issues seriously and we took the forums offline while we investigated and resolved the issue. The forums are now open for normal use.
“Please note that we will continue to perform maintenance on our community websites over the coming days and some features may be unavailable from time to time. Game services are not impacted and will continue to operate on a normal schedule.
“Even though this issue appears to be limited in scope, if we believe that your account has been impacted we will contact you directly. We recommend all players change their passwords.”

A UK TV ad for Duke Nukem: Forever has been banned from air before 11pm.
The advertisement features naked women, girls in school uniforms, all topped of with a dash of violence.
Two versions of the ad had previously been cleared for TV after 7:30pm and then after 9:30pm.
However, some 34 viewers still thought it was too 'offensive, irresponsible, sexist, violent and overly explicit.' So much so that it could 'potentially harm children and vulnerable people.'
2K might want to consider putting that on the box.
Take-Two defended the ad, saying the sexual content and violence is 'exaggerated, non-realistic' and was meant to reflect the 'over-the-top and humorous' nature of the game.
The Advertising Standards Authority didn't think the ad was overly graphic for broadcast after 9pm, but was a bit concerned by all the naked goings-on.
The advertising regulator said: "We noted that the ad featured two girls in school kilts and bunches about to kiss, and considered that, in the context of other scenes with sexual content, the ad appeared to link teenage girls with sexually provocative behaviour.
"We concluded that the ad was irresponsible and likely to cause serious or widespread offence when broadcast before 11pm."
Take-Two now must not broadcast that ad again before 11pm. Although, we imagine, the Duke Nukem campaign has largely been completed.

Andrew Stalbow, Rovio general manager of north America, has given a rare insight into the company's player traffic, revealing thatAngry Birds has 30 million daily average users.
The vast figure would eclipse even the most popular game on Facebook, Zynga's CityVille, which according to AppData currently enjoys a DAU of 'just' 12.1 million. However, it's worth bearing in mind that Rovio's figure accounts for all versions released across multiple platforms.
Along with the DAU data, Stalbow also claimed that Angry Birds has now been downloaded 400 million times (it passed the 350 million mark just last month) and that those 30 million DAUs put in 300 million minutes of play time every day.

Epic Games Korea has signed a licensing deal with publisher and developer Neowiz Games, that will see the use of the Unreal Engine in the studio's first MMORPG.
The game in question, Bless, is a medieval-inspired fantasy RPG featuring ten territories, each containing its own race, across two realms called Hierapolis and Cosmopolis. As you might imagine, the aforementioned realms are at war.
Neowiz's team of 150 have been working on the game since 2009, the results of which you can see in the video below.
"It is great to announce one of our most important licensing deals in Korea, and we're excited to see Neowiz Games' first MMORPG using Unreal Engine 3," says Epic Games Korea territory managerRay Park. "Neowiz Games' extensive knowledge of online games and the technological competitiveness of Unreal Engine 3 should prove a winning combination for Korean gamers."
The game also makes use of the Unreal landscape tool developed by Epic’s Korean arm.

If you’re not willing to shell out for a reasonably powerful laptop it seems that there’s not a ton that can be done to boost your gaming performance. That is, unless you have an empty Express card slot and the right chipset.
[Phatboy69] recently put together an external video card for his notebook, with fantastic results. His Vaio Z128GG had an Nvidia GT330M graphics card onboard, which is decent but nothing to write home about. Using an Express card to PCIe adapter, he added an external Nvidia GTX580 to his system, and he couldn’t be more pleased with the results. While the card does take a performance hit when connected to his laptop in this way, he claims that his graphics performance has increased ten-fold, which isn’t too shabby.
There are many variables on which this process is heavily dependent, but with the right amount of tweaking, some great laptop gaming performance can be had. That said, it really does take the portability factor of your notebook down to about zero.
If this is something you might be interested in, be sure to check out this thread over at the Notebook Review Forums – it’s where [Phatboy69] found all the information he needed to get his system up and running properly.

Warner Bros. has deemed today the day to reveal Batman: Arkham City's delayed PC launch date as November 18, one month to the day after its arrival on consoles.
The Games for Windows version was delayed last month via a terse WB announcement, which didn't provide an explanation at the time. We can exclusively reveal why today: Bruce Wayne is exhausted, y'all. He's got a lot going on, between film and TV and video games, and he just needed a few weeks to chill. Okay, that and PC version bug fixes.

Eight years on from its video games debut, French comic IP XIII is to re-enter the video games market with a new game called XII Lost Identity.
In 2003 Ubisoft published XIII on PS2, Xbox, GameCube and PC. Though graphically striking thanks to its use of cel-shaded graphics, the game failed to spark much love either commercially or critically.
Details are scant concerning this new title, with publisher Anuman Interactive simply confirming that it will be released on PC, Mac, iPhone and iPad.
The XIII comic series first saw the light of day in 1984. It starred an amnesiac hero struggling to piece together the part of his missing parts.

The Sims has established itself as one of the most successful games franchises of all time, selling more than 140m units worldwide. While pets have previously featured in the simulation series, they could only be trained and doted upon.
The Sims 3: Pets allows players to actually live the life of a four legged friend. And rather than being another expansion, it’s a standalone game on consoles and PC.
“This next iteration in The Sims series truly has the most innovative features we’ve seen to date” says EA’s UK product manager Bolu Akindoyin. “The Sims franchise is going from strength to strength.”
A player's best friend
Gamers can adjust the size of a creature’s snout and ears, select eye colour and even choose the texture of their pet’s fur.
Animals also have customisable traits such as laziness and friendliness.Alongside cats and dogs, players can look forward to collecting lizards, snakes, turtles and birds, with PC owners having the exclusive option to control horses. There are even unicorns in-game.
Expect Pets to be a hit with casual players and fans of The Sims.

October 19th, 2011, 01:43 Posted By: wraggster
Facebook has changed the way it calculates the total monthly and daily active users (MAU and DAU) for apps on the social network, sending figures plummeting.
The adjustment means that users who choose not to authenticate after a permission dialog box is clicked, and those who visit an app but do not log in, will no longer be contribute towards active user counts.
As a result of the changes, some games have seen more than half of their previously reported user figures drop away (though these changes have made no difference to the actual traffic each game sees).
The MAU figure for Zynga's newly-launched Adventure Worlddropped 58 per cent from 39.4 million to 16.4 million. CityVille fell a comparitively more modest proportion, from 76 million to 55 million, while EA's The Sims Social dropped from 65 million to 42 million.
Facebook adjusted its reporting methods in August last year, discounting users who just 'liked' apps from the total count - a change that also saw a drop in MAU and DAU figures for developers.

shaitand writes about Google disagreeing with the desire of Chrome users to put tabs under (rather than above) the location bar:"This issue has had overwhelming feedback from users with no notable dissent. But Google revealed their view on the community, saying that feedback and comments aren't considered, and today moved to silence dissent and lock comments on the issue. [A Chromium developer] says, 'Commenting on this bug has absolutely no effect at all on the likelihood that we are going to reconsider. So that people don't get their hopes up falsely, I'm locking this bug to additional comments.'"

According to StatCounter, it's taken roughly two years for Redmond's latest to surpass XP and become the world's most popular operating system. October 2011 marks the first time that Windows 7 has overtaken XP globally, with a 40 percent share of the market versus the latter's 38. As for Vista, it's been holding steady at around 11. Not that it's much of a surprise, as in North America, Windows 7 took the crown back in April of this year. Rounding out the top five, are OS X (though it's not clear whether that captures all of Cupertino's beasts) and Linux, which come in at 7 and 0.82 percent respectively. But don't take our word for it, hop on over to the source links and get your interactive chart on.

In a move that's sure to raise some eyebrows, Microsoft today debuted a new web site designed to raise awareness of security issues in web browsers. When you visit the site, called Your Browser Matters, it allows you to see a score for the browser you're using. Only IE, Chrome, or Firefox are included — other browsers are excluded. Not surprisingly, Microsoft's latest release, Internet Explorer 9, gets a perfect 4 out of 4. Chrome or Firefox do not even come close to the score of 4. Even though the web site makes it easy for users to upgrade to the latest version of their choice of browser, Roger Capriottihopes people will choose IE9, as it blocks more malware compared to Chrome or Firefox."Of note in the Windows Team post is that the latest Microsoft Security Intelligence Report discovered that 0-day exploits account for a mere tenth of a percent of all intrusions. Holes in outdated software and social engineering account for the majority of successful attacks.

Sam Ramji thinks the days where Microsoft's, (and Apple's, and Oracle's) love-hate relationship with open source are numbered, thanks to the cloud. Whereas some open source advocates say the cloud may kill open source, because users won't have access to the source, Ramji says the cloud will be its salvation. Ramji, Microsoft's original internal open source dude, thinks companies building clouds won't be able to keep up if they don't participate in open source communities because that's where the developers building new cloud infrastructure are doing most of their work. The main concerns standing in the way for both cloud builders and users of free software are legal fears, he contends. These include fears of the GPL's copyleft provision and fears of being sued by downstream users. Is he right ... or full of FUD?"

Sega will be serving up Sonic goodness to PC gamers too with Sonic Generations.
A PC version of the mascot's tribute title has been rumored in the past, particularly when Sega listed PC as a platform in a Japanese earnings report.
Putting confirmation on it, PC digital distribution services Direct2Drive and Green Man Gaming have listed the title for pre-order for $29.99.
The new game will have both classic Sonic and the modern-day, green-eyed equivalent revisiting classic Sonic levels - in both 3D and 2D side-scrolling.

Bethesda has released a patch for id's latest shooter, RAGE, fixing a number of bugs and adding graphics engine settings "due to popular demand."
Legendary gaming pioneer John Carmack enraged a number of PC gaming faithful by saying: "We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games" and describing problems with video drivers "a real cluster !@#$."
"We knew that all older AMD drivers, and some Nvidia drivers would have problems with the game, but we were running well in-house on all of our test systems. When launch day came around and the wrong driver got released, half of our PC customers got a product that basically didn't work," Carmack told Kotaku.

The biggest 20 games operators on Facebook are combating a steady drop in daily user retention, an analyst group has said.
IHS Screen Digest claims that, during the first three quarters of 2011, the likes of Zynga and PopCap noticed a downward trend in user engagement.
User engagement is a specific metric that measures the ratio of daily active users versus monthly active users.
If the ratio is in decline, as the new data suggests, it means that those who log on to Facebook games every month are doing so less on a day-to-day basis.
