Oh, what a difference punctuation makes. Speaking at the company's shareholders' meeting earlier today, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made a remark that set more than a few geek hearts aflutter. According to various reports, he said "We've got broad Windows initiatives driving Windows down to the phone with Windows 8."
Turns out, that's not how he said it. A Microsoft rep confirmed to us that if transcribed correctly, Ballmer's remarks (documented in the recording below) should read, "We've got broad Windows initiatives driving Windows down to the phone. With Windows 8, you'll..." By "Windows," then, he meant the overarching family of software bearing the Windows name, and not Windows 8 specifically. Says Redmond's PR team:"He was making a statement along the lines of what we've already publicly stated around providing a consistent experience across various devices but all carrying the Windows name."
Makes sense to us, seeing as how Windows 8 already makes good use of WP7's Metro UI. Still, we'll be curious to see how Windows 8 influences Windows Phone once Win 8 gets the final seal of approval, likely sometime next year.

Curse of Monkey Island (Classic Edition) is a 2d-demake of the classic title from 1997. It is still in a very early stage of development but you can download a new demo version.

Bug!!!???
Apparently there is still a bug in the last build of the game, where if you use the cannon before getting the hook and the stick then Murray doesn´t show up. Unfortunately I have not been able to duplicate this bug in the version I was working on before I decided to stop progress on it. I have decided to upload the version I was working on as a kind of last HURRAH of sorts. Hopefully this will fix the problem.

On the PC the RPG is still king, as is evident from this week's UK PC sales chart, in which Bethesda's Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim takes No.1 while Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 makes it to No.2.
The rest of the PC chart is filled with the usual suspects: Football Manager 2012 finishes the week at No.3 and is followed by Battlefield 3 at No.4, The Sims 3: Pets at No.5, The Sims 3 at No.6 and The Sims 3: Generations at No.7.
The final trio of games in the top ten at Rage, The Sims 3: Late Night and LA Noire, which hold No.8, No.9 and No.10 respectively.
Here's how the top ten for the week of ending November 5 reads:
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda)
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision)
Football Manager 2012 (Sega)
Battlefield 3 (EA)
The Sims 3: Pets (EA)
The Sims 3 (EA)
The Sims 3: Generations (EA)
Rage (Bethesda)
The Sims 3: Late Night (EA)
LA Noire (Take 2)

Graphics card maker Nvidia has pointed to games such as Battlefield 3 as evidence that the PC platform is way ahead of current generation consoles. In a question and answer session with investors following Nvidia's financial earnings, CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said the growing disparity between PC and game consoles such as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 fuelled much of the money it made."We're expecting GeForce desktop to be up, and we're expecting that to be up nicely, driven by the hit games," he said. "This is likely a multiyear cycle of growth for PC gaming."This happens every major game console cycle towards the second half of its product life, because PC technology advances on a regular basis instead of once every seven to ten years."And so you could imagine how PC technology is dramatically better than a game console today, and you're starting to see that now with a new generation of games that are coming out, such as Battlefield 3."For the quarter ending 31st October, Nvidia posted revenue of $1.06 billion, up $843.9 million from the same quarter last year. Net profits were $178.3 million, more than double the previous year's total of $84.9 million. The majority of the company's revenue - $644.8 million - was generated by its GPU business.Money made from desktop consumer graphics rose beyond usual seasonal increases, Nvidia said, and this was due to "strong global demand from PC gamers, driven by highly anticipated blockbuster PC games just starting to hit the shelves".Nvidia singled out EA's Battlefield 3, which is the fastest-selling EA game ever, Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, likely the best-selling game ever, and science-fiction MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic, a PC-exclusive due out next month with impressive pre-order figures."We believe this surge of PC gaming demand will drive increased demand for Nvidia's GeForce products despite the soft consumer PC market," the company said."We expect a multiyear PC gaming cycle, as the PC becomes increasingly more powerful than five to six-year-old gaming consoles."Last month DICE told Eurogamer the PC version of Battlefield 3 is what gamers can expect from the next-generation of consoles."There's some stuff in here that's truly next-gen," executive producer Patrick Bach said. "A lot of tech stuff, Frostbite 2. Rendering, the lighting, destruction, to me I'm mesmerised no one else has been trying to do it."I'm looking forward to see if other games can start to do some of the things we're doing. We have some really cool stuff."

Persson to launch full game this Friday
The indie games sensation Minecraft is days away from going gold, bringing an end to 31 months in public beta.
The Lego-like sandbox building game was first released to the public on May 19th 2009, and has since undergone numerous iterations and updates in response to fan feedback.
More than 16 million people have registered their details on Minecraft’s official website, where a free browser edition of the game remains, while more than four million customers have purchased a full edition of the title.
The master edition of the game will go live this Friday during a special MinecraftCon event in Las Vegas.
The game’s creator, Markus Persson, will take stage at the event and personally launch the master edition in front of thousands of fans. The event has sold out.

While "Bloodbath Arena" remains an effective caption for the gruesome state of Dead Island, it's also a specific add-on coming to PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 22. The DLC was delayed for a short stint after developer Techland decided to spend more time polishing the main game -- a process which was still ongoing with the release of last week's major console patch.
Bloodbath Arena is free to customers who pre-ordered the Special Edition game, and costs $10 or 800 MS Points for everyone else. It offers four new arenas for single-player or co-op play, and challenges participants to execute and outlive multiple waves of zombies. So, it's a survival mode in which you face off against a constantly replenished force of snarling enemies. You could call it "Mob Mode" or something like "Enough Enemies to Warrant a Collective Noun Mode."

If you're looking to craft a small form factor HTPC to an equally small budget, then VIA's own-brand internals deserve some serious consideration. The company's 1.4GHz dual-core Nano X2 CPU was recently put to good effect in Zotac's ZBOX Nano VD01 and is now available as part of a DIY combo called the VE-900, which puts the processor on a compact mini-ITX motherboard alongside a VX900 dedicated media accelerator for smooth video handling up to 1080p. The board has a single PCI slot, room for up to 8GB of DDR3, two SATA pin headers and four USB 2.0 ports. The rear panel adds to this with HDMI and VGA video outs, three analog audio jacks, Gigabit LAN, four more USB 2.0 ports and other standard fare -- but alas, it seems that the $89 price tag won't fetch you digital audio outs or USB 3.0. You'll find a full PR and promo video after the break, plus some Nano X2 benchmarks at the More Coverage link.

via http://www.scummvm.org/news/20111111/
It has been over 10 years. We are here thanks to the work of 131 developers. 49,124 commits were made just to the ScummVM tree and those turned into a massive 1,085,714 lines of code (excluding comments) and of course over 7.6 million downloads from the main site alone. I would say those were a great ten years.
The outcome is ScummVM 1.4.0 which we are releasing today, 11/11/11 11:11:11.11.
More games are supported: Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos <SMALL>(based on the same engine as Kyrandia)</SMALL>, the kids' game Blue's Birthday Adventure, and the science fiction game Ringworld: Revenge of the Patriarch. On top of that, practically all supported Sierra SCI games now have their Amiga versions working. Our musically inclined users will notice PC speaker support in Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, CMS support in Loom, The Secret of Monkey Island and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, fixed MIDI in the DOS versions of the Elvira series, and even sound in Winnie the Pooh in the Hundred Acre Wood!
As always, there are many more new features; you can find the full list in our release notes and the release itself on our downloads page.
Enjoy!
1.4.0 Release binaries
For a list of changes since the previous version, read the release notes.
1.4.0 is also apt-get'able from Debian unstable (sid).

While console gamers go mental for Modern Warfare 3, it seems PC gamers - or Steam customers at least, have their hearts set on something a little less spray-and-pray.
Elder Scrolls V: Oblivion has, at the time of writing, 267,229 concurrent players, which impressively dwarfs MW3's 64,171 gamers, which takes the second spot in Steam's current list of most played games. This has been the case since launch day, when PC Gamer reported 231,593 gamers taking their first steps into Skyrim's world, while MW3's multiplayer managed to draw in 78,161 players at the time.
Universally positive Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim reviews raised its review average on Metacritic to an astonishing 96 yesterday.

November 12th, 2011, 01:27 Posted By: wraggster
Developer Polyphony Digital has confirmed it is already hard at work on the next instalment in the Gran Turismo series.
"Of course we're working on GT6 already," studio boss Kazunori Yamauchi told IGN, backing up previous claims.
When asked how he decides what content to release as GT5 DLC and what to save for GT6, he replied: "I think what really will be the separating factor is; something that we can't update through a DLC is something that obviously has to be saved for GT6. Things that we can provide through DLC we will, so that's really the market difference."
Fortunately, none of this means that DLC for GT5 will dry up. On the contrary, regular updates are promised following the release of the game’s first DLC earlier this month.
"It's been about a year since we've released the game and in the interim we've had about 15 updates that were performed on the game,” he added.
“These set up the basic platform for the system. Now that we have that out of the way, we're ready to release more expansions and content to add to the game.
"I think that will include cars and trucks that we'll be releasing maybe once every two months or so from here on out. What we do from here on is also really dependent on the reaction of the users to this first DLC that we just released because this is the first one. Now we have the feedback from our customers and we'll see how that will affect what we will do from here."

November 11th, 2011, 23:31 Posted By: wraggster
Tom Paquin, CTO of OnLive, last night highlighted the game development possibilties of the company's cloud gaming service and appealed to creators to use the platform to make games that will "really knock our socks off."
During his talk at the London Game Conference last night, Paquin focused not on the subscription-based streaming service thatlaunched in the UK in September, but on the potential of OnLive as a development platform.
After highlighting one of the service's unique selling points to developers - its immunity to piracy - Paquin explained that the technology used in OnLive's Brag Clips, where users press a button to save the last ten seconds of gameplay, could be used for realtime monitoring of QA and beta tests.
"When a game dumps core in our environment," he said, "not only do you get the dump but you also get the 30 seconds of video leading up to it. You can see how it happened.
"It's an opportunity for changing release models, changing development models. Do episodic releases; do trial releases. We're convinced there are numerous pay-as-you-something opportunities here, but it's up to you. We're OS engineers; we'd only get it wrong."
Paquin went on to explain that the fact that all of OnLive's processing occurs server-side, delivered to users over a broadband connection, meant graphical advances could be made without requiring customers to have powerful hardware. After showing a video of a highly detailed facial model, made in theBatman: Arkham Asylum engine with a greatly increased polygon count, he said: "We're not happy with faces in games. They need to get past the uncanny valley.
"We'd like a company to have a library of [assets] they can share across the industry with as many polygons as they need. It's totally deliverable right now. The really creative companies could come up with a game that could only run in this type of environment and really knock our socks off."
Paquin's insisted his talk wasn't a pitch, or an advert. In fact it was more like an appeal. In an earlier session, consultant Nicholas Lovell had backed rival cloud service Gaikai over OnLive, saying the former had a better business model because it was a platform that companies were able to work out how to use on their own terms.
Paquin did much to show that OnLive has the potential to be both: an opportunity for developers to push boundaries, backed up by subscription revenue. Candid throughout, he admitted the company could not do it without the help of the several hundred developers in the room.
"The coolest things to happen on OnLive won't come from OnLive, or people like us," he said, calling on the audience to "make the entire gaming industry go to places that I currently haven't thought of. We want the best minds in this space to be thinking this way."

It may be time again for another discussion/flamewar on the reasons why a lot of us are (still) using Microsoft. The last big discussion on Slashdot was close to 10 years ago, and a lot has changed since then: Windows XP and 7 have proven to be stable (and memories of Windows ME are mostly gone.) There are many more distributions for Linux, especially commercial options. Distributions like Ubuntu and CentOS have made GNU/Linux more friendly. Options for word processing, spreadsheets, etc. have grown. Apple and their products have changed considerably, though their philosophy hasn't. Microsoft Silverlight came and is on the way out. Wine and solutions like Transgaming have matured. So... why are a lot of us still using Windows? What would it take for us to switch?

Whatever Star Wars: Identities turns out to be, Eurogamer can tell you this - it's definitely not a video game."I can't comment on rumours or speculation," a LucasArts spokesperson told Eurogamer."However, I can confirm that this is not a video game."Lucasfilm was spotted registering website domains for Star Wars: Identities this week. With video games ruled out, speculation will turn to films or animated television shows.Identities may not be the name of a Star Wars video game, then, but we know LucasArts to be at work on one. A LucasArts job posting for an openworld RPG project betrayed this earlier in the year.LucasArts' last internally-built Star Wars game was The Force Unleashed 2, which fell flat. But the studio has since promised to do better.

With Batman wholly occupied in dismantling disastrously conceived punitive institutions, it's up to a gang of loyal imitators to clean up Gotham City proper. Starting the week of January 10 on PC, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, you'll be able to assist either The Bats or -- if you can tolerate their edgy substitution of "s" -- The Jokerz in 12-player online battles for the unusually coveted, crime-ridden city.
Gotham City Impostors will undergo an open beta in December, so if you're interested in the game's premise, character customization or odd weaponry, visit the official site and sign up for a WB ID. With a bit of luck you'll get an early tour of what Condé Nast calls "a gloomy, demented place that should have been razed by an orphan."
