Microsoft plans to tackle the 'disruptiveness of restarts' of the operating system for automatic updates in the forthcoming Windows 8, the company said.
On the Building Windows 8 blog, Microsoft revealed that 90 per cent of Windows users worldwide had installed updates within a week of release and that 90 per cent of Windows users rely on automatic installation of updates.
In order to minimize the number of restarts, Microsoft will bundle all of the patches needing restarts into a single monthly security update on the second Tuesday of each month, or 'patch Tuesday' as it's known.
Windows 8 will also go through a process of notifying users of an update beginning with a message saying the OS will either restart in three days or install the updates on a manual restart, whichever is the sooner.
If, at the end of three days, Windows 8 believes there are 'critical applications' then the OS will wait until the next log in.
Interestingly Microsoft also said that the firm had been asked to add the ability update third party applications via the Windows update system. Microsoft scotched that idea, pointing out that the updates to the OS and third-party drivers were all carefully screened.
However the new Windows Store for Metro-style apps will update applications automatically, in much the same way as the other digital stores that Microsoft is aping in the new OS.

A Norwegian technology start-up has unveiled a prototype USB stick-sized computer codenamed "Cotton Candy" that will run Android and aim to deliver 'any screen connected computing'.
FXI said that the idea behind Cotton Candy is to allow users a single, secure point of access to all personal Cloud services and apps through their favorite operating system, while delivering a consistent experience on any screen.
"The device will serve as a companion to smartphones, tablets, and notebook PC and Macs, as well add smart capabilities to existing displays, TVs, set top boxes and other media that supports USB mass storage," the company said.
The device itself is based on smartphone technology, incorporating an SoC with a dual-core 1.2GHz ARM A9, ARM Mali-400 GPU (these specifications are similar to Samsung's Exynos SOC), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a HDMI output for connecting to a screen.
FXI demonstrated Cotton Candy by connecting the tiny device to a 42-inch HDTV and playing YouTube videos and 3D games. They also showed the device plugged into a Windows PC and a Mac playing Angry Birds on the Android OS.
There's not much in the way of an actual product that can be bought, FXI reckon some sort of product will arrive in the second half of next year.

Yoshida has been working on FFXIX since the MMO's troubled launch last year, when it was so widely criticised that Square decided to let players play for free while it works on improvements.Subscription fees are set to be reintroduced with a month or two, and Square hasannounced a massive '2.0' update for release in 2013 with a whole new engine built from scratch and other major changes.
But you won't be getting a new game, says Yoshida. "Players, community websites, and the gaming media may see the roadmap we have provided and take it as, 'Oh, they're creating a completely different game,' but this is not the case," he told Gamasutra.
"FFXIV will always be FFXIV and nothing else," he asserted.
Clarifying the point of version 2.0, he stated: "The first thing I did when I became the producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV last December was to ask myself, 'What kind of service system, game content, and community content would be necessary if we were to continue to offer this service 10 years into the future?'
"In doing so, I went back and restudied the systems used by other MMOs offered worldwide, such as World of Warcraft and Rift."
2.0 will encompass many of the updates developed in the past year, but most importantly, he explained, it's all about the new engine.
"Why build something from the ground up when it already exists? Well, the current engine we are using is good for showing 'passive graphics' in offline games, but the most important thing an MMO needs is an 'active graphics' capable of showing many, many different characters on the screen simultaneously. This is simply too difficult to accomplish with the current engine," he said.

As it's Thanksgiving weekend in the US, it's fitting that BioWare is giving players something to be thankful for: one last, giant beta test ofStar Wars: The Old Republic. So if you're interested in seeing if the hype matches the game, make sure you stay out of any turkey comas following Thursday!
According to SWTOR'sTwitter, the test has been scheduled for November 25th through the 28th. This represents the largest beta test for the soon-to-be-released title yet, with hundreds of thousands -- perhaps millions -- of players invited to stress-test the servers.
The test might not technically be "open" beta, but it's pretty hard at this point not to get into it. Any player who registered for beta testing prior to November 11th is automatically included, and those that didn't can grab one of the thousands and thousands of keys floating out there -- including from us!
If you have questions about the beta test, it might behoove you to check outSWTOR's FAQ on the event.

EA has proven that it's not afraid to bring the banhammer down on Origin users who defy their Terms of Service; though its stringent adherence to that policy has, on occasion, provided cause for concern. In March, a user on theDragon Age 2 forums was banned for breaking the forum's rules, only to find out he'd been prohibited from using his purchased copy of the game as well. Though EA reinstated his Origin access and chalked it up to a system error,Rock, Paper, Shotgun reported that it was not an isolated incident.
EA has never explicitly said that handing out Origin bans alongside forum bans was its modus operandi; however, RPS finally received an official statement on the bans from EA Corporate Communications' John Reseburg. According to him, "when someone violates our Terms of Service, we are forced to take actions that can include suspensions and other measures." That's not a clear confirmation of the policy, though Reseburg later added, "We have listened to our customers and are planning a policy update which will include more equitable rules on suspensions – we want to make sure the time fits the crime."
It seems utterly bizarre that EA wouldn't be explicitly clear about a policy that carries as heavy a punishment as this. We can understand wanting to keep a forum free from the blight of obscenity, but if that comes at the cost of preventing legitimate purchasers of EA's products from accessing said games, those purchasers deserve to know about it ahead of time. As it stands now, Reseburg simply suggests, "any user with a question about suspensions or our policies to please contact us at (866) 543-5435 so we can address their specific situation."

The Flash edition of Unreal Tournament 3 looks superior to the PS3 and 360 versions that were released four years ago, Epic Games vice president Mark Rein has said.
In early October, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney took stage at Adobe's Max 2011 event to demonstrate Unreal Tournament 3 running through a browser in real time.
The feat was made possible with Adobe’s Flash Player 11, which utilises a hardware accelerated, programmable graphics pipeline. That means triple-A-style content can run on a web browser application that’s no bigger than a few megabytes.
The sheer astonishment of Epic running current gen games in Flash led some to believe that Sweeney’s demonstration was smoke-and-mirrors, but Rein says the achievement was real.
“I can’t blame you if you couldn’t imagine a Facebook game at the level of Unreal Tournament 3 before today,” he told Develop.
“We’re not just talking about triple-A console quality on the web, we’re actually showing it onscreen, in a web browser, playing inside Flash.
“We chose as our demo a fully playable level from Unreal Tournament 3, and it turned out to look even better than the version we shipped on Xbox 360 and PS3, with improvements like global illumination, better shadows, and god rays.”
Unreal Tournament 3, published by Midway across 2007 and 2008, was said to have suffered from technical problems during its frantic multi-platform development. However, the game recieved positive critical reception upon release.
Rein said Epic is “just getting started” with its work on Flash. It is not known if Unreal Tournament 3 will be released in full on Flash.

'Last week, Intel announced that it had added x86 optimizations to Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, but the text of the announcement and included quotes were vague and a bit contradictory given the open nature of Android development. After discussing the topic with Intel we've compiled a laundry list of the company's work in Gingerbread and ICS thus far, and offered a few of our own thoughts on what to expect in 2012 as far as x86-powered smartphones and tablets are concerned.' The main points: Intel isn't just a chip maker (it has oodles of software experience); Android's Native Development Kit now includes support for x86 and MMX/SSE instruction sets and can be used to compile dual x86/ARM, 'fat' binaries; and development tools like Vtune and Intel Graphics Performance Analyzer are on their way to Android."

Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios has announced work is underway on Project Mamba, a AAA title due on PC and "console platforms" in 2014.It's being developed at the Swedish outfits new office in New York City with senior staff from its Stockholm HQ also involved. No word yet on exactly what to expect, but that release date likely pegs it as a next-gen project. The New York office has just opened for business, with former Activision and Atari executive David Grijns in charge. It's taken over a custom-designed 10,000 square foot facility in Manhattan's SoHo district, with an option on a further 3000 square feet for future expansion. The studio plans to hire up to 50 new staff within the next 12 months."Today is a great day for Avalanche Studios as we have achieved yet another goal by establishing a new studio in the greatest city in North America," commented founder Christofer Sundberg."We are one of the few independent, AAA-budget studios remaining in the world after the disastrous economic recession of the last few years. While this was a huge wake-up call for everyone in our industry, we have prepared for this expansion for over three years and it is a great feeling to execute our plans with such resounding success."Avalanche's last release was downloadable twin stick shooter Renegade Ops back in September, which picked up an 8/10 from Eurogamer.

- A significant ship rebalancing effort, to bring greater diversity and balance to large and small scale conflicts
- A lot of small changes - from fonts to UI to Doomsday devices to PvE tweaks
Crucible is the first major expansion since the storm of controversy surrounding the game this summer, which ended in a candid public apology from CCP's CEO and a wave of job cuts at the studio.

Stardock and Ironclad Games' Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity, the bundled collection of the epic space armada RTS and its mini-expansions, is available now on Steam. After selling over 2 million units, mostly through Stardock's Impulse digital distribution system, the game is finally warping over to Valve's service.
"With the sale of our former PC digital download technology to GameStopearlier this year, we no longer have any conflicts of interest in offering our titles to other digital distribution channels," said Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock. "We are starting with Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity with other titles being made available over the coming weeks."
Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion, a "full-fledged expansion" of the series and not a sequel, is expected to launch next spring. Stardock plans to add more of its catalog in "the coming weeks."

Trial offer as EA tries to build buzz around its Steam rival
EA has issued a discount code that allows Origin users in the UK to download Burnout Paradise for free.
Brits will need to install EA’s Origin program in order to claim Criterion’s critically acclaimed racing title.
The initiative, which is not available outside the UK, appears to be a trial run to gauge the benefits of offering free content.
Origin is a digital games platform for PC that its operator, EA, hopes will become a formidable competitor to Valve’s Steam.
Valve frequently experiments with free games and discount offers to stimulate activity on its games portal and lure in new customers.

Windows 8 is renaming the second week of every month. After "Patch Tuesday" comes "Gentle reminder Wednesday," "Polite yet firm suggestion Thursday" and "Automatic restart Friday". In order to keep everyone's system secure, Windows Update will download patches in the background before adding a notification on your lock screen that you're due a restart. If you haven't managed it within 72 hours, you'll be given a 15 minute warning to save your work and close up before it forces the shutdown -- unless you're watching a movie or conducting a presentation, it'll lie in wait for your next idle period to do it. With this system, you'll only have to complete the procedure once a month and can plan your schedule accordingly. The only time the system will deviate is when a security threat like a blaster worm appears, at which point Microsoft will ensure you're restarting as soon as a fix is available. What, you didn't know that "keeping end-users on their toes" was a feature?

We're always confused by pre-order offers for downloadable games -- even more confused by pre-order offers for OnLive games, for which the game code technically never leaves OnLive's servers.
But we're able to overlook logistical questions, because OnLive is extending the generous offer of a free Microconsole with pre-order of Assassin's Creed Revelations, for those who purchase the $49.99 game by November 19. It's the same deal the service offers with every major release, and it wows us every time. "Free console with purchase of game" is a pretty good hook, an evaluation shared by Ezio's new equipment.

Activision 'misspoke' in tweet suggesting that Call of Duty Elite may not arrive on the PC due to hacking concerns.
While console exclusives are not exactly a new development, the decision not to release a PC version of the online service Call of Duty Elite seemed particularly strange given the platform's natural affinity with online first-person shooters.
Rather than trot out the usual reasons such as a smaller market of PC games and piracy concerns, this time the issue is one of security with game developer Beachhead Studio saying back in October that they were "working our butts off" to ensure the PC version could remain cheat-free.
"The issue here is that the PC is an insecure platform. Without a central, trusted resource for stats, a lot of our competition features become unfair," Beachhead Studio boss Chacko Sonny said in an interview with One of Swords.
"We can’t give away prizes when people can easily cheat their stats," Sonny added.
However a recent Twitter update from Activision's @CallOfDutyElite account appeared to call into question the appearance of the online service on the PC platform at all.
"We are working towards a universal Elite experience but we cannot guarantee if or when a version will be available for the PC," Activision tweeted.
Some hours later the same account posted a correction, saying "we misspoke."
"Our goal has always been to provide a free PC offering for ELITE. Stay tuned for an update as timing is still being determined."
