Call of Duty: Elite will help to dispel a lot of the negative perceptions about online shooter communities, according to Activision digital vice president Jamie Berger.
He told Gamasutra the service enables users to find other gamers to play with not by anonymous metrics but through any common interest that they may choose, thereby delivering a deep level of social interaction that promotes respect between players.
Online shooter communities are often depicted as hate-filled environments that are unwelcoming to new players and minority groups, but Berger said the Elite community has been highly collaborative during the beta.
"One of the most interesting things to me is how positive people are in the service. I'm most excited that within it, people are being supportive; they're actually talking to each other, and amongst each other.
"They're so happy to actually have a place to be part of a community, not a message board... they're actually behaving very much like people who just want to be social and have fun, not people who want to flame each other.
"It creates a social contract," he added: "How can we start behaving as if we live in a neighbourhood? You try to treat your neighbours with respect. When you create a true community, that, to me, is the difference between 'social gaming' and a community.
"It starts breaking a lot of the bad assumptions about what a shooter is. It breaks down those anonymous walls and turns it into something where you start knowing each other."
Activision said at the weekend that an annual subscription to Elite will cost £34.99/$49.99.http://www.computerandvideogames.com/318157/cod-elite-breaks-bad-assumptions-about-online-shooter-communities/

Opera has some guts going up against the likes of Samsung in the emerging realm of Smart TV apps. Then again, its new storefront brings something different to the table: namely a dashboard that strictly adheres to HTML5 and other web standards so that apps can work across any platform. Content providers like Vimeo and DriveCast have already signed up and TV manufacturers shouldn't be far behind -- not least because the underlying browser engine is claimed to run smoothly even on crappiercheaper processors. Opera has even released an emulator to make life easy for smaller app developers who, for one reason or another, can't afford a whole testbed of TVs. Opera still has a way to go, butpleasing everyone all the time is surely a smart strategy for any underdog. PR after the break.

Sony's Tablet S may not have been quite fit for consumers' hands when we previewed it last week, but we can only presume that the company's now finally gotten things sorted out, as the tablet is available for pre-order with a promised September 16th ship date. That now includes Amazon in addition to Sony's own site, as well as Best Buy and Future Shop in Canada which are each listing a slightly later September 23rd availability date for the country (but the same $499 and $599 price tags). As expected, those interested in the smaller, dual-screened Tablet P instead still have a bit more waiting to do.

Windows Media Center fans can finally breathe again. After seemingly endless will they / won't they speculation Steven Sinofsky, the President of the Windows Division has confirmed in a blog post thatMedia Center will return for yet another go 'round in Windows 8. There's no word on any possible changes, only that the company has "work to do" concerning the quality and compatibility of add-ins. Wondering why it hasn't been in some pre-release builds? Between the potential for multiple SKUs (no details until closer to release, but it seems like you'll be looking for an Ultimate pack or something similar again to get everything) and simple engineering decisions as features are added and removed that's just the way it is. Another factor is that WMC isn't exactly mass market, as he cites stats indicating only 6 percent of Windows 7 users launched the app in July, with over half of those sessions lasting less than a couple of minutes. Meanwhile, IE apparently pops up on 88 percent of Windows 7 desktops.

The Chinese publisher bought Cryptic in May, acquiring the rights to Star Trek Online, Champions Online and the forthcoming Neverwinter from Atari in the process. Champions has already switched to F2P, and STO is now due to follow suit before the end of the year.
"I think free-to-play model [has] a bigger potential in US market and also in China market," reasoned Perfect World chief financial officer Kelvin Lau during an earnings call last week.
Perfect World saw rises in both revenue and profit in its second quarter financials. Total revenue was RMB779.6 million ($120.6m); up from RMB718.5 million in Q1, and RMB 592.5 million ($92.6m) from the same quarter last year.
Net profit also showed significant year-on-year gains, increasing from RMB196.6 million ($30.7m) in Q2 2010 to RMB316.6 million ($49.0m) this year.
The publisher's efforts primarily stem from the Far Eastern market, but the Cryptic acquisition marks a concerted effort to crack the West. "It will help us grow in the US and the Europe," said Perfect World chairman Michael Chi, "and further strengthen our R&D and operations around the world."

HP said that the tech giant would manufacture another batch of WebOS powered TouchPad tablets.
"Despite announcing an end to manufacturing WebOS hardware, we have decided to produce one last run of TouchPads to meet unfulfilled demand," announced HP PR man Mark Budgell on the HP Next Bench Blog.
The world's largest PC maker slashed the price of the TouchPad to £89 or $100 in markets worldwide following a shock withdrawal from WebOS hardware. The result was stampede of consumers keen to snap up a tablet for a fraction of the original asking price.
"I think it’s safe to say we were pleasantly surprised by the response," said Budgell.

With a masterful nail in the optical disc coffin, Microsoft has announced that its new operating system willnatively mount ISO disc images. On the slightly more enterprisesque side of the equation, VHD files will also be supported by Windows 8. Both new features will be smoothly integrated into Windows 8 Explorer's ribbon menu, and mounting an ISO or VHD is as simple as double clicking the file. This is obviously an important addition with Windows 8 being available on tablets — and in a year or two, it wouldn't be surprising if all software is made available as an ISO on a USB drive which can be read by tablet and PC alike.

GameSpot has signed a deal with OnLive to host streamed demos of games on its website, featuring the almost instant feature on game pages alongside review and other media content.
To mirror that side of the deal, OnLive's platform will feature GameSpot content such as reviews and interviews to aid customers in buying choices.
"For as long as video games have existed, consumers have sought out information that helps them make smart purchases and get the most out of their gaming experience," said Simon Whitcombe, of GamesSpot's parent company CBS Interactive.
"Now, the next big innovation is here: merging the editorial with the experiential. By making demos available from our game pages, GameSpot is now the ultimate one-stop destination for gamers to read reviews, news, watch videos, and actually try out the latest games."
Over 100 game demos will be available via the service, which has not yet been given an official launch date. OnLive launches in the UK on September 22, at the Eurogamer Expo at Earls Court.

News via http://www.aep-emu.de/
Doom64 EX is a clone of the Nintendo64 game Doom64 for Windows. Thanks to Emu-France for the news.
Quote:
Doom64 EX 2.0 is finally released, head over the downloads page to get it. For those who have already grabbed it, you may want to redownload it again due to a minor update involving some fixes to the console and game menu.
There’s too many updates, changes and improvements to list here since version 1.4 though some of the biggest changes were the complete overhaul of the audio system, console, and interface. Many things were also tweaked and changed to match the exact behavior of the original game such as player movement, some enemy behavior tweaks, etc.
Needless to say I am quite happy with the way this project has headed and I hope to keep it alive with new features for modding in the near future. While mod support isn’t fully user-friendly yet, it is possible to begin creating custom content. A customized Doom Builder is currently being worked on to allow development of custom maps and there will be tutorials posted here soon.
A technical doc is also released for those who are interested in learning about all the technicalities that makes up Doom64. That and the game binaries can be found at the downloads page.

You know how we've all seen Mario with a Portal gun before? Well, somebody is actually trying to make that into a game we can not only watch, but play! It's calledMari0 and is currently in development for OSX, Windows and Linux at two-man team Stab Yourself.
Mari0 will sport not only the original Super Mario Bros. levels, but also all of the Lost levels -- plus in-game downloadable map packs, a level editor and simultaneous multiplayer for co-operative portal slinging. Seriously, read that sentence again and then click this link.
Like many (if not all!) of you are, we're behind this project entirely. Let's just hope we can all snag it before Nintendo's lawyers shut it down.

Lots of things are getting tweaked, if not completely overhauled, for Windows 8. That includes the ever-present Windows Explorer. Just like many other Microsoft apps, the file manager will be adopting the slightly more finger-friendly ribbon interface. But don't freak out about your precious screen real estate, the next version of Explorer will actually display more files than Windows 7 could by moving the details pane to the right-hand side and tweaking the padding. The up button has also returned and a slew of new keyboard shortcuts are being introduced. Check out the source link for more detail and a demo video.

Mojang's Markus Persson has revealed that Minecraft isn't sold through Valve's Steam service because of its restrictive terms of service.
In a post on his personal blog, Persson praised Steam as, "the best digital distribution platform I've ever seen." However, it doesn't offer the sort of freedom a game like Minecraft demands.
"Being on Steam limits a lot of what we're allowed to do with the game, and how we're allowed to talk to our users," he wrote.
"We (probably?) wouldn't be able to, say, sell capes or have a map market place on minecraft.net that works with steam customers in a way that keeps Valve happy."
"It would effectively split the Minecraft community into two parts, where only some of the players can access all of the weird content we want to add to the game."
Persson revealed that Mojang is talking to Valve to resolve the situation, and claimed that he understood the need to control the platform.
"There's a certain inherent incompatibility between what we want to do and what they want to do," he added.
Persson's explanation offers a new perspective on EA's decision to remove its games from Steam, including Crysis 2, Dragon Age II, and the forthcoming Battlefield 3.
"We take direct responsibility for providing patches, updates, additional content and other services to our players," wrote EA's senior vice president of global online David Demartini in a blog post in July.
"Unfortunately, if we're not allowed to manage this experience directly and establish a relationship with you, it disrupts our ability to provide the support you expect and deserve."
"At present, there is only one download service that will not allow this relationship. This is not our choice, and unfortunately it is their customer base that is most impacted by this decision."

Twins, like cupcakes, are universally regarded as a good thing. So, it stands to reason that GScreen's attempt to double your laptop's screen size would be an equally appealing idea. Turns out, duping a display took the Alaska-based company a wee bit longer to fully flesh out, but the time has finally arrived for its debut. Shipping this November, the aptly-named Spacebook will bring a capacious, portable desktop solution to on-the-go creative professionals. The girthy, 10-pound rig won't be winning any style points from the svelte is better crowd, but that's easy to overlook given its dual 17-inch 1920 x 1080 screens, choice of a Core i5 or i7 processor, up to 8GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB of storage, NVIDIA's GeForce GTS 250 (1GB) and DVD burner -- all encased in a magnesium alloy frame. You can grab the entry level model for $1899, but the higher-end, two-headed beast will cost you $2099. If you're in the market for the king of all laptop displays, then head to the source to get your order on.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/29/gscreens-spacebook-begins-shipping-this-november-doubles-your/

The Zod Engine is an open-source remake of the game Z from the Bitmap Brothers.
Quote:- Upgraded the manage bots and change team menus to let you know what team your on and what the bot statuses are. Made an options menu for misc stuff. Also made it so the player list does not show bots anymore.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/zod/...7.exe/download
I have a bug to fix about resizing the window while menus are up, and I want to make it so holding down the up/down button in a list auto goes up/down instead of once per click. I also want to add in the warning box typically used for "Are you sure you want to quit" but we´ll use it for other things too such as "Are you sure you want to reset the map?" etc. After that I may add some more to the options menu and I need to do the multiplayer menu and that will probably sum up the gui menu stuff for now. From there we may go to android support, mac support, or an improved map editor.
- Window resizing with menus fixed...
- Holding up / down auto scrolls for lists...
