Star Wars: The Old Republic project lead James Ohlen says the developer is working hard to be prepared for what could be "the biggest online launch in history".
He told Gamasutra the studio's currently polishing game systems and tutorials, while focusing on making sure the underlying tech is stable enough to ensure a smooth launch.
"The thing about a massively multiplayer game is that it's different from any other game out there, because you have this vast online community all over the world online at the same time, and you have to make sure there's no way for your game to be hacked.
"You have to have very strong security, your game has to stand up if you have hundreds of players in one zone at the same time. There's a lot of things that we've never had to worry about at BioWare before.
"And the fact is, because of the hype around the game right now, our launch numbers are predicting something really huge, which means we have to be ready for the biggest online launch in history essentially, which has made it really tough. We've been running a lot of tests, just making sure we're going to stand up when we launch."
Earlier this week BioWare reiterated that it's targeting a 2011 release for Star Wars: The Old Republic, but said delays are always a possibility when it comes to launching games of the MMO's scale.

World of Warcraft developer Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo III will not be released this side of Christmas.
In actual fact, the game is now expected to be released in the still somewhat speculative “early 2012” timeframe.
As a result the game’s closed beta period has been extended, with the potential now for more players to be added. Those interested can ask for consideration at Battle.net.
"With every game we make, the temptation is always very strong to launch as soon as possible,” Blizzard CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaine stated.
“However, we didn't put so many years of work into Diablo III to release a game that was almost ready. The beta test is going very well, and we look forward to making the most of the extra time we're taking to deliver an experience that lives up to our vision for the game and the expectations of our players.
“Next year is going to be an incredibly busy one for Blizzard, and we hope an incredibly fun one for Blizzard gamers."

After many galactic ages, Electronic Arts has finally announced a release date forStar Wars: The Old Republic, and it's not too far, far away. The long-awaited MMO will officially launch later this year on December 20 in North America and on December 22 in Europe.
In addition to the release date, the game's pricing structure has also been revealed. The subscription options should look very familiar to World of Warcraft vets. After the free month that comes with the game, plans start at $15 for a single month, $42 for three months or $78 for six months. Oh, and if you want early access, there's still time to pre-order, of course.
Thankfully, there's also still time to come up with an excuse for skipping out on your family's holiday plans.

There's been a lot of attention to the way Windows 8 looks; reader aabelro writes with an interesting look at one way it behaves. The article begins thus:"Microsoft has created a new mechanism for sharing information between applications in Windows 8 called Windows Share. Apps can share text, bitmaps, HTML, URI, files, and other type of data, and the usage scenarios are numerous. For example, the app receiving the information can post it to Tweeter or Facebook[, making] it easy to post information to a social network without actually visiting it."

In a press release, Blizzard has announced that Diablo III has been delayed, and will now be released early next year.
CEO Mike Morhaime said: "With every game we make, the temptation is always very strong to launch as soon as possible. However, we didn't put so many years of work into Diablo III to release a game that was almost ready.
"We look forward to making the most of the extra time we're taking to deliver an experience that lives up to our vision for the game and the expectations of our players."
The timing of the announcement is a curious one, coming just days after the start of Diablo III's closed beta. Blizzard is to push back the beta's original end date, and may also invite more players in to help with testing than originally planned.

YoYo Games, creator of Game Maker, has launched a new version of its drag-and-drop game development tool that outputs games in HTML5-compatible Javascript.
The release of Game Maker: HTML5 means that users can export their creations to a webserver from which it can be playable in-browser on PCs, smartphones and tablets, without the need for any additional plugins. A new feature, Team Collaboration, lets multiple users work on a project at the same time.
CEO Sandy Duncan said: "Game Maker: HTML5 is a huge step forward for the Game Maker lineage and we're very proud to have launched this new version, which brings game and web content creation within the reach of anyone.
"As the HTML5 wave begins to break across the web and it becomes adopted as the de facto standard, Game Maker: HTML5 will undoubtedly lead the revolution in easily created, easily deployable content that's richer and more complex than ever before."
Those interested can purchase the Game Maker: HTML5 beta from $99 at YoYo Games' website. Recent research, however, suggests the rush of interest in HTML5 may be premature, as it is regularly outperformed on mobile devices by Adobe's Flash.

New statistics from technology company Nvidia predict that revenue from PC gaming will overtake revenue from consoles by 2014.
The predictions did not include tablets like the iPad, or mobile gaming.
The presentation, which accompanied the companies latest investment call, also pointed out that while PC's are constantly evolving in terms of processor power and performance, the latest generations of consoles were released in 2005 and 2006
It should be noted that Nvidia is heavily invested in PC gaming. Founded in 1993, the company produces processors, chipsets, digital media players and GeForce GPUs.

Last night at its F8 presentation Facebook unveiled the latest version of the massive social network, which dramatically changes the way friends share activities, and adds a music, film and television app.
"The web is at a really important turning point right now," said Zuckerberg in his presentation.
When the new Facebook launches in a few weeks users will be able to see a Ticker, a stream of what their friends are listening to, watching, and most importantly, playing, and what they're doing in that game.
"Social games are killing it," said Zuckerberg.
"Games have been the most successful apps on Facebook. We think that Open Graph is going to take social games to the next level and make them a lot better, by helping you discover even more games that you want to play, through your friends."
Zuckerberg used Zynga's Words With Friends as an example, using the Ticker to see what words his friends were playing by hovering over the update.
"Social games have really already transformed the way we play games and the way the gaming industry works, but we think Open Graph is just going to take this to the next level. This is gonna be good."
The Open Graph removes the need to give an app repeated permission to post updates to your feed. Other additions include a more detailed Timeline which will act like a personal journal, which users are allowed to edit retrospectively. Facebook developers can choose to swap to this new timeline from today.
"Now, with the Open Graph and social plug-ins, more sites are going to use social plug-ins to give their users social experiences without them even having to connect."
The new media player app, which will host music, movies and television, already has the support of Spotify, Hulu and Netflix.
"We're building towards a web where the default is social. Every application and product will be designed from the ground up to use real identity and friends."
Facebook launched in 2004, going from an American college based portal to a global social network, complete with a Hollywood film.

GAME Group has forged a unique strategic partnership with OnLive, the cloud gaming service that launches in the UK today. In fact GAME is the first games retailer to work closely with OnLive.
The firm will sell the service to millions of customers in the UK, and eventually across Europe and elsewhere, starting with GAME’s ecommerce sites game.co.uk and gamestation.co.uk later this year. OnLive’s products and digital service offerings will then be extended to the Group's 615 UK stores and integrated with the Group's popular loyalty schemes, the GAME Reward Card and gamestation Elite card.
It's another step in embracing digital models for GAME. The firm has this year rolled out nationwide initiatives to sell Xbox Live and PlayStation Network content in-store. OnLive launches in the UK today after a US roll out last year.
The service promises instant access to a library of games, with little to no hardware needed except a PC or TV.
Ian Shepherd, CEO of GAME Group said: “We are delighted to be partnering with OnLive. It will bring a totally new cloud based gaming platform to the UK customer.
"Through our websites and the teams in our stores, we will introduce the OnLive service to millions of customers and allow them to use cash and reward card points to buy games on OnLive. Today’s announcement demonstrates again GAME Group’s dedication to supporting innovation in gaming.”
Steve Perlman, Founder and CEO of OnLive, added: “GAME Group is an ideal strategic launch partner for OnLive in the UK, and we could not be more excited about the relationship. GAME has a close one-to-one connection with gamers in the UK, and OnLive provides a unique offering that, on the day of launch, reaches almost all gamers in the UK instantly through their broadband connection, whether on a TV, PC or Mac, and soon on iPad and Android tablets.
“OnLive will bring free instant demos to the www.game.co.uk, and if the player chooses, provide instant purchase and continued play of the videogame on OnLive through GAME’s loyalty currency or credit cards. After the demo gamers can alternately return to the GAME website to purchase the game on another platform, or learn more about it by and chatting with other players in OnLive’s massive spectating Arena. The OnLive-GAME relationship will bring an unprecedented level of choice, convenience and value for UK gamers, whether through the Internet or in a retail store.”

September 23rd, 2011, 00:31 Posted By: wraggster
Today is an important day that I have no doubt represents a true change to how we consume games.
It’s hard to escape the conclusion that the rise of cloud computing will, in the fullness of time, come to dominate our digital lives. Browsing, working, playing – the cloud is a logical evolution in all of these sectors.
Two big questions remain, however. When? And How? When will the UK’s somewhat feeble internet infrastructure be stable enough to cope with it? And When will the public come to accept cloud services as equals or even superiors to current technology? And How will consumers want to consume this tech?
In truth, I’m not sure the first point is as big an issue as some might believe. My Virgin Media 20MB connection is more than up to the task. And non-cable connection speeds are rapidly improving. Unless you live in the country, of course.
BT’s all-you-can-eat three month OnLive offer is great news for both OnLive and consumers. How well it will sit with BT’s tightly regulated data usage rationing is a bigger question. If OnLive catches on, how long until BT’s network begins to groan under the pressure?
A bigger question, though is when will the public come to accept cloud computing as the norm. You have a dodgy internet connection? Then be ready to be locked out from your OnLive games until it’s sorted. Again, not a problem for me – my home internet is rock solid. But I wouldn’t fancy trying it at the office. Obviously that’s because I’m too busy working to play games. But in a hypothetical world where I do nothing all afternoon on a Friday, I’m not sure if our current internets – which struggle to stream a 720p video – are up to the task.
At the moment all of my cherished data – photos of my daughter, my music and movie collection, my unfinished novels – sit safely on my PC’s hard drive. They’re also backed up on an external drive. Would I be prepared to entrust that information to a remote server controlled by a faceless corporation? That, as we know now better than ever, is vulnerable to hacking and cyber attacks? Hmmm.
But here’s the biggest question. How. How are consumers going to take to OnLive’s business model?
I should say here that I think OnLive’s current proposition represents genuinely good value. Membership is free, and with it access to demos for dozens of games.
The PlayPack bundle, usage of which is available via a thoroughly reasonable £6.99 per month subscription, includes a lot of very decent games including the likes of Borderlands, FEAR 3, Batman: Arkham Asylum, LEGO Batman, Homefront, the original Deus Ex, FlatOut, Just Cause 2, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Frontlines: Fuels of War, BioShock, STALKER, AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!!, Hitman: Blood Money, Alpha Protocol, Mini Ninjas, Saints Row 2, Aliens vs Predator Classic, World of Goo, Puzzle Quest, Virtua Tennis 2009 and Unreal Tournament III.
Premium, recent releases, however, will cost £39.99, with a 30 per cent discount for subscribers, bringing prices in line with the High Street. Roughly. This isn’t quite a clear-cut as it sounds, though.
In truth I never pay £39.99 for a game. In the interests of honesty, I’m lucky enough to be in the position where I get sent a lot of games. But I do buy games as well. Which are expensive, as you might have noticed. I honestly can’t remember the last time I simply paid £40 for a game without either using Gamestation store-credit or taking advantage of a supermarket promo or High Street trade-in offer.
None of which is possible with OnLive. It goes without saying that you’re never going to recoup some of that £39.99 by trading in your OnLive titles or selling them on eBay. Consumers are all too aware of this.
Arguably though that isn’t even the biggest problem. That is the question of ownership. Paying £39.99 to stream a game that exists on a remote server, the only connection to which you have is down your telephone line, is very different to paying £39.99 for something your physically own – be that on a disc or as 1s and 0s on your HDD.
Even if the OnLive tech is completely flawless and your internet connection as solid as a cast-iron statue of an elephant plated in super-strong diamonds riding in a tank, this is the obstacle that OnLive must overcome. Are punters ready to pay premium prices to access rather than own a title?
In truth I find it hard not to come to the following conclusion: OnLive tech does represent the future, but its business model does not.
I’m really not convinced that the full price retail model is suited to this type of delivery system. And as much as the subscription market in sectors like the MMO is falling massively out of favour, in the cloud gaming field I think it’s a natural fit. Imagine a £9.99 per month deal for unlimited access to all of OnLive’s games. Even £14.99 a month. That’s a tempting offer, as long as OnLive can offer every title available on the market.
Still, that’s not the future I see for cloud gaming. OnLive is still held back by another very important factor – consoles. All the PC games in the world will always struggle to compete with triple-A console offerings.
Can OnLive ever hope to deliver these? Not in its current form. But what if OnLive tech were integrated into Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network? What if for an additional £10 a month or so gamers were granted access to every titles on XBL or PSN? Now we’re talking about revolutions.
Remember today. In years to come when you’re an abandoned pensioner left to rot is a poorly funded NHS retirement home and your grandchildren begrudgingly pay you a visit, you can tell them about the day cloud gaming first arrived in the UK. Then you can tell them about games consoles and discs and memory cards and VHS and petrol and pens and they can laugh at your nonsense.
The revolution will be televised. On an internet enabled TV.

It’s all the industry is talking about today, and new streaming games service OnLive is doing all it can to ensure the public is just as enthused.
As well as its any game for £1 deal for new users of the service, OnLive is also offering a fantastic freebie for those who pre-order Saints Row 3.
If you pledge to but THQ’s game for £34.99 then OnLive will supply you with a free Microconsole and joypad worth £69.99.
Of course, the Microconsole isn’t needed to access OnLive – that can be done via a PC or Mac. But using the hardware allows gamers to directly access OnLive via their TV or HMDI-enabled monitor.
Furthermore, sign up for the £6.99 PlayPack subscription and users get 30 per cent of all purchases.
That makes a total of £24.49 for Saints Row 3 and the OnLive hardware for all those who commit to a subscription.

OnLive, the cloud gaming service that launched in the US last year, is now live in the UK.
The service launches with a library of some 150 games, playable instantly on an HDTV, PC or Mac, with iPad and Android tablet support to be added in future. Games can be bought individually, with prices starting at £1.99, or played through a subscription package, the PlayPack Bundle, which costs £6.99 a month.
In the UK, OnLive has partnered with BT - no great surprise given that BT was an early investor in the company. To celebrate the launch BT is offering its broadband customers a free, three-month subscription to the service, during which time it will also waive its bandwidth usage limits.
Founder and CEO Steve Perlman said: "OnLive is incredibly excited to bring instant-play, on-demand cloud gaming to the UK. OnLive is an entirely new way of experiencing top-tier videogames, anywhere, any time and on virtually any connected device."
We'll be publishing an in-depth interview with Perlman on the site later today. For more, visit OnLive.co.uk.

Steve Perlman, CEO of OnLive, the cloud gaming service whichlaunched overnight in the UK, believes that the console cycle as we know it is a thing of the past.
In an interview to be published later today, Perlman explains: "In my view, there probably will not be another high-end console. We don't know of any in the works, the developers have not received any prototypes and the Wii U is not that, it's a different kind of thing. I think that this is the next console."
While OnLive currently runs games at inferior resolutions to their PC equivalents, Perlman says it is capable of much more. As broadband speeds improve over time, OnLive will be able to serve higher-quality images to the same hardware - removing the need for a new console every five years.
"We'll start doing 4k resolution games," he claims. "We can do it in the lab [now], 4096x2048 in full 3D - that's the type of resolution Avatar would be projected in a theatre. We can make that work...developers can go and do what they've been wanting to and go crazy with the kind of realism that can be achieved."
It's a bold claim, but has its basis in fact. Microsoft and Sony insist Xbox 360 and PS3 will be around for ten years; Wii U does not appear to be a significant graphical improvement over the current generation. Central to the cloud's appeal is the fact that server-side improvements can be made without requiring anything of the end user, and Perlman is convinced that OnLive users will, in the fullness of time, be playing high-end games on a £70 set-top box, or their existing PCs and tablets.
Our full interview with Perlman - in which we discuss the UK launch, the GameStop Deus Ex debacle, and why OnLive has partnered with one of the worst ISPs in the country - will be published later today.

Forget Dark Souls, one of the hardest games around is Minecraft, says RPG maker Jeff Vogel. For adults. As we've noticed ourselves, kids have no problem simply playing it, dreaming up projects to make and do, made spellbound by possibilities. But adults? Vogel, who runs Avernum developer Spiderweb Software, says:
"What I found so fascinating was that, when I asked my fellow olds what they thought of it, I always got a similar response:
"I didn't know what to do."
"I didn't see the point of it."
"I didn't have a purpose."
And then they looked at me as if all this made perfect, self-evident sense."
Minecraft definitely requires a certain mindset for it to really make sense - but how do you get yourself into the mood?
Meet the Prince in Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time, Yuri Lowenthal, who gives POP-maker Jordan Mechner an account of the challenges of voice acting: "You don’t see a lot of working voice actors getting cast because of their looks. Once again, you have to be a good actor. Not just a pretty face."
Plants Vs Zombies flash mob in Shanghai!
Clearly, giving things a score out of ten is the best way of evaluating them. So you'll be as pleased as we are that ratedoutoften.com has been established to do just this for everything.

Michael Barr, lead developer on the Gun Game mod, said: "We are excited that Valve reached out and is working with us to ensure Arsenal mode is the best version of Gun Game."
Valve has released the below screenshots to coincide with the announcement. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is due early next year for PC and Mac through Steam, Xbox Live Arcade, and PlayStation Network.

Every time we reboot our computers, that scrolling code takes us right back to the days of War Gamesand Tab. Bringing us into the 21st century, Microsoft has decided to ditch the old boot by beautifying the whole experience with a graphical menu. Windows 8 will shift from the standard fugly BIOS system to a Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) -- giving users a high resolution logo and a graphical menu to gaze upon while powering up their PC. Besides just looking better, the menu lets you boot to a different disc, OS or USB drive using pretty pictures and words as prompts. If you're into a little self-inflicted eye torture, you can always pull up the command prompt menu from nightmares past. Check out the throwback video tribute to the computers of yesteryear after the break.
Update: Just to clarify, Microsoft isn't actually building flashing mobos, but it's pushing towards UEFI to achieve "significantly richer capabilities" while booting.

OnLive promised that it was coming, and the company has now brought its cloud-based gaming service to the UK right on schedule. That, of course, is identical to the service elsewhere, which lets you play a variety of PC games on any supported platform, including OnLive's own game system. UK gamers can also take advantage of a range of promotions coinciding with the launch, including their first OnLive PlayPass Game for £1 (up to a £39.99 value), and a free OnLive Game System to those attending the Eurogamer Expo (while quantities last, of course). Those interested can sign up and start playing right now at the link below.
