There could come a time on the not-so-distant future when all your games are piped to you over the internet via subscription-based services.
That's according to EA Sports label VP Andrew Wilson, who sees a possible future in which the games industry goes entirely digital.
"If we look at what consumers have pushed other industries for: if we look at what consumers forced the music industry to provide, if we look at what consumers have driven as a result of television and movie subscription, if you look at us - there's absolutely a time somewhere at some point in the future where the consumers say, 'Hey, this is how we want to interact with you: we want to give you a monthly or annual subscription and we want access to everything you make'," said Wilson.
"They get to drive the time and place for it, and a lot of it is technology dependent, but absolutely we can see a future where that might be the way we deliver games," he added.
With regards to the technological boundaries for such a future, Wilson said it's not the consoles that are restrictive but the global internet infrastructure that can't yet come with huge games being served digitally. "It's less about the generation and more about internet infrastructure," he said.
"The thing about consoles [is] that's a lot of content: six, seven gigs of information. Right now there are some places in the world where you can move that size of information around relatively seamlessly; there are a lot of places you can't," he went on.
"Right now the consoles themselves could facilitate it, but there are other barriers to entry that make getting it from Game or GameStop a viable proposition, at least today."
Sony has already taken a step in this direction with its PlayStation Plus subscription service which allows gamers access to vast amounts of content for a fixed monthly fee.
EA Sports president Peter Moore recently hinted that EA Sports games may soon integrate persistent player profiles that allow users to carry save progress over from one game to another

Recently launched social networking service Google+ is soon to get gaming features, according to the site's help pages.
As reported by Slash Gear, Google help pages referenced something called a Games Stream, where you'll be able to check for updates on games your playing.
"If you're looking for updates shared from games, check out your Games stream," it read, before being pulled earlier today.
The Games Stream link led to a 404 error page.
Hints that Google+ will soon support games have also been spotted in the site's source code, which references a number of different interfaces, including "/_/games/getGameFriends", "/_/games/getActivities" and "/_/games/postToStream".

In a rare voice of calm amongst a tidal wave of enthusiasm, the president and CEO of Square Enix US has said that he can’t see the current hunger for social gaming lasting forever.
"I grew up a gamer, my entire career is in the games industry,” Mike Fischer told Gamasutra.
“So even though right now things like social gaming is already hot, and it's attracting a lot of VC attention, I'm not confident that a lot of that interest will still be there in a number of years as some other category becomes hot down the road.”
Furthermore, Fischer believes it’s actually dangerous to pay too much attention to what could potentially be passing fads.
"For us, it's not about picking winners in the different platforms,” he added. “It's about having great IP and fitting that to the best platform for it. We want all of the platforms to succeed."

Google Labs isn't the only thing winding down in Mountain View, it seems Google's Firefox toolbar is also kaput. Citing exponential growth in the browser space, the outfit declared that the Google toolbar for Firefox is no longer necessary -- modern browsers are just too darn capable. Support will continue for older versions of the browser, but Firefox 5 will have to stand on its own. Still, El Goog admits that dropping the toolbar kills more than a few features, and is offering a list of similarly featured add-ons to users via the defunct toolbar's help page. Not enough? Head on over to the announcement's comment page and join the peanut gallery, a few clever legumes seem to have uncovered a FF5 workaround. As for the rest of us, it's not like we didn't know Google had its own browser (and interests) to take care of, right?

EA has promised that massively multiplayer online game Star Wars: The Old Republic will launch this year.
Additionally, EA announced beta test weekends begin this September. These weekend play sessions will be open to selected players worldwide.
Yesterday EA opened up pre-orders of the game, which comes in three flavours.
Reports indicate the £129.99 Collector's Edition is sold out across many retailers.
The £59.99 Digital Deluxe Edition, exclusive to EA's Steam rival Origin, is also under pressure.
Pre-ordering the game nets you a redemption code that will unlock early game access and an in-game colour stone to change your weapon effect.
"Pre-order quantities are limited and Early Game Access will only be available to those who pre-order the game and redeem their code before the game's official release," EA said.
BioWare boss Ray Muzyka explained that EA was deliberately limiting supply at launch "to ensure that players easily transition into the servers".
"So whether you're waiting to join the Empire or the Republic, pre-order now to ensure you can enter the galaxy at launch!"

EA's digital PC store Origin can activate Steam codes for some EA games.
PC Gamer successfully redeemed keys for Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Dragon Age 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2 and Alice: Madness Returns. Mass Effect 1, however, did not work.
PC Gamer managed to validate the Steam product key for Dragon Age 2 on Origin, and then launch the Steam version of DA2 from the Origin client. The Steam overlay and chat functions were intact and present.
Origin already has a peek around your PC for existing EA games. Will peeking in your Steam library for EA games be the next step?
EA wants Origin to be the de facto online place to buy and download EA PC games. Origin will be the only place to digitally buy Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The first details of the Star Wars: The Old Republic Collector's Edition have seemingly leaked via Polish and Spanish retailers.
Kotaku sources also claim limited pre-orders are set to kick off tomorrow, so we may find out pretty soon if the following info's legitimate.
The site suggests you'll only be able to pre-order the game through EA's new online store, Origin, and that the publisher's taking just 500,000, with only the first 50,000 pre-orders guaranteed and the remainder queued in a waiting list.
These are supposedly the contents of the Collector's Edition, which is rumoured to be priced at €149.95/$175:

Cloud-gaming service Gaikai has secured $30 million in a new funding round led by venture capital firm NEA.
Founder David Perry said the investment will be used to accelerate the rollout of the network.
"We have all become used to accessing every song ever made, every book ever written, every movie in every genre through cloud-based services. Gaikai is bringing this same functionality to video games and other interactive software. Over the last few years we have quietly designed and assembled a custom high-speed interactive network, purpose built to realise this vision.
"The Gaikai network enables publishers to deliver a full experience within 30 seconds in any leading web browser, on all operating systems, on all devices, even running inside platforms like Facebook."
Earlier this month, Gaikai signed a deal with Capcom that will see the publisher's games made available on its cloud gaming service in the US.

Assassin's Creed will be coming to tablets "in a few years" according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot.
It'll be joined by editions of Ubisoft's other biggest brands, although Guillemot only named Assassin's specifically when answering questions in an earnings call earlier this evening.
"The tablet market is growing fast, we have Apple and lots of other players with tablets," said the Ubi CEO when asked about the publisher's future regarding the tablet market.
"We are developing a few products around our brands. You will see games in the next few years from all of our biggest brands like Assassin's."
"They will be different games," Guillemot replied when asked how similar the titles would be to their console and PC counterparts.
"They will be adapted from games in the past or specifically developed for those platforms."
Assassin's Creed will also be coming to Nintendo's new console, the Wii U, but Guillemot has said that it won't be Revelations, leaving many to speculate about the coming of Assassin's Creed 3

Called Championship Manager: World of Football, the game will of course be free-to-play and will be accessible from any standard web browser.
It is being developed by both series stalwart Beautiful Game Studios and China’s Shanda Games.
Initially the game will only launch in China, though if it proves successful an international rollout is anticipated. A Chinese beta is also planned.

Net Applications estimates that IE6 has a share of 33.8% in China, StatCounter estimates about 40.2%. Consider the fact that there are currently about 477 million Internet users in China and you get 160 to 192 million IE6 users. That is potentially more than all Internet users in Africa and the Middle East combined (187 million)

Those who played the PC version of sci-fi shooter Crysis 2 online upon release know it suffered from cheaters.
Crytek UK, which created the multiplayer portion of the game, has combated many of the exploits and hacks used by those cheaters to gain an unfair advantage in the game – and ahead of its keynote at the Develop conference this week has revealed to Eurogamer how it did it, and how the cheaters gained a foothold in the first place.
Using hacks, players were able to give themselves extra points, trigger infinite energy cheats and exploit bugs that meant that you did not have to reload or suffer from recoil.
All of this contributed to an unfair advantage.
"We had patch windows open to us, and it was just about getting the right fixes into the right patches and getting them out to the community as soon as possible," Mark Tully, Crytek lead programmer, told Eurogamer.
"One thing we did have on our side on the PC, where most of the hacking was taking place, is the dedicated server program. That meant we had a load of trusted partners we could update the dedicated server software on. We probably updated that about four times for every client patch we updated the end user with.
"There was a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes to catch the cheaters at their dedicated servers and just kick them from the game. That's probably where a lot of the effort was.
"What people were seeing was, cheats that were working one day would suddenly not be working the next day even though nothing had apparently changed. It was just the server had been updated."
But how did Crysis 2, a triple-A, high-profile multi-platform game from a proven developer, ship with such a susceptibility to cheating?
According to Crytek UK, the developer simply didn't expect the game to get hacked on the scale it did.
"We did feel like the game seemed to attract a lot of attention from hackers and cheaters," Tully said. "More than we anticipated."
CryEngine 3, the Crytek-owned game engine used to create the game, also played a part.
"CryEngine as a whole is a very moddable thing," Tully explained. "It's a very flexible engine. Particularly on PC there are a lots of hooks that are perhaps left exposed that shouldn't be left exposed, which can leave you open to hacking if you're not careful.
"Obviously with the push onto consoles, which don't really suffer from the same kind of hacking and exploiting to the level they do on PC, it hadn't really been focused on as like, we need to go through the PC version with a fine tooth comb and close all these doors, many of which we weren't specifically familiar with, they weren't ones we'd actually added in multiplayer, but ones that had come with the CryEngine if you will.
"That was probably something we would have benefited from spending time on."
And if it could go back and create the game again, Crytek UK wouldn't repeat its mistakes.
"The things we've done post release are things if we'd thought about it beforehand and known it was going to happen, we could have done those," Crytek UK principal programmer Pete Hall explained.
"For example, on the PC, people were able to edit some of the data in the game and then go and play online, which wasn't our intention at all. It was as much a bug as anything else.
"Things like that we would definitely of fixed up in a heartbeat."
Now, four months after release, Crytek is happy with the state of Crysis 2's online multiplayer.
Crytek recently released a DirectX 11 patch for the PC version of the game, which allows those with powerful computers to ramp up the graphics.
This is the last patch scheduled by Crytek, Tully confirmed.
But the developer promised to dip back into support of the game if a hack emerges that demands attention.
"We're relatively happy with how things are at the moment," Hall said. "But there's always the thing with people cheating that they naturally are continually looking for an edge over other players. So new things will come to light and we probably will want to go back and look at them as they do.
"But I don't think there's anything we're aware of at the moment we desperately want to fix."
Crytek UK is heavily rumoured to be working on TimeSplitters 4 for the next-generation of home consoles.
The studio refused to confirm this was the case to Eurogamer, but did say a number of new projects are in the works, and vowed that they won't suffer from hacking and cheating in the same way Crysis 2 did.
"We've closed most of those now, so I wouldn't expect the same problems for future titles," Tully concluded.
"It's an ongoing battle with the hackers. There are a lot more of them than there are of us."
