This week, people finally got around to reading the end user license agreement for EA's download service Origin, and found that it allowed EA to collect personal and usage data for marketing purposes. This contrasts with Steam's EULA, which allows Valve to collect and store information related to Steam and other Valve software only.
In response, EA issued a new, much softer-sounding version (PDF link here) of Origin's EULA. The new version no longer mentions marketing, but maintains the right to collect "nonpersonally identifiable data, including computer configuration, software usage, and peripherals connected. EA specifies that this data collection is done "for purposes of improving our products and services, providing services to you, facilitating the provision of software updates, dynamically served content and product support as well as communicating with you."
EA also added a note that seems directly inspired by the outcry over the last EULA. "EA knows that you care how information about you is collected, used and shared, and we appreciate your trust that we will do so carefully and sensibly," the document now reads. "Information about our customers is an important part of our business, and EA would never sell your personally identifiable information to anyone, nor would it ever use spyware or install spyware on users' machines."http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/26/ea-revises-origin-eula-data-collection-is-still-in-collection/

Earlier this year, we heard a slew of whispers promising a late winter launch for Microsoft's Windows 8tablets -- there was even mention of a tab-specific OS. While it's become clear that Redmond intends for its new operating system to run on multiple devices, insight into its tablet plans are still somewhat shrouded in mystery. From the looks of these gesture patents, however, it's clear MS has been eyeing a dual-screen tablet future (hello Courier). The recently published patents, not yet granted to the company, touch upon methods for off-screen input (read: bezel-based), but mainly focus on these multi-screen input options: dual tap, pinch and expand, hold and page-flip, hold and tap, and finally, bookmark hold. As you can glimpse from the image above, the patents handle simultaneous touch screen input, allowing a user the ability to swap images between screens, or even freeze a page on one side while continuing to browse on the other. By the looks of things, Sony might have some fierce competition in the multi-screen tablet market. Head to the source below to get a fuller look at these touch-based solutions.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/26/microsoft-gesture-patents-reveal-possible-dual-screen-tablet-foc/

After recently running a full-page ad in the WSJ saying, 'PC gaming is not dead,' Razer has now announced a new laptop, the Blade, for the express purpose of playing video games. Its most distinctive feature is what they call the 'Switchblade' UI, which is an area next to the keyboard that has a multi-touch LCD screen and 10 dynamic keys. The screen can receive and display information from games, and the keys can show unique icons particular to the game you're playing. The requisite hardware for a gaming laptop makes it weigh almost seven pounds, but it's less than an inch thick. Another distinctive feature is the price — at $2,800, they price a lot of gamers right out of the market. As the article says, 'It's a gamble, but an exciting one.

Gaming cloud service OnLive has updated its client to support group cross-game chat and other enhanced features.
Speaking to Joystiq today, OnLive CEO Steve Perlman confirmed that users are now able to specify groups of people and maintain a chat session with them regardless of the game members of the group are playing. Invites into the chat room can now also be sent via email from the service.
New parental control options have also been added, allowing parents to controls the contents their children are able to play in line with PEGI and ESRB ratings. They can also add exceptions to these rules, watch in on the child's gameplay live and chat with them as they play, too. Poor child.
Facebook integration has now also been enhanced to support Achievement postings direct to your wall. OnLive will not only automatically tell your FB counterparts when you've got an achievement, it'll automatically include a video clip of the last 10 seconds of gameplay before you got it, which is pretty neat.
It's not all been good news for OnLive today. While the service revealed it's signed a cool deal with Square Enix to allow PC owners of Deus Ex: Human Revolution a free cloud version of the game, this hasn't sat well with GameStop, who's told its employees to open up the games and throw out the OnLive coupons included.

Ahh, the Windows Explorer progress dialog. For years it has been struggling to figure out how to calculate how long our copy and delete operations would take, sliding the progress bar back and forth in a seemingly random, haphazard way, the laws of time all but ceasing to exist — five seconds remaining one moment and 13 minutes the next. That's (almost) all going to change, with the arrival of a greatly improved file management experience in Windows 8. Copy, move, delete, rename, and conflict resolution are all being overhauled and it's about time!

Looks like Razer's not buying the whole "console > PC" argument. The company just went live with a new website that couldn't possibly be more esoteric. Aside from telling us that "there's something terribly wrong with gaming today," we aren't given much to go regarding its impending announcement. Apparently, something "big" is coming on the 26th of August, and whatever it is (Switchblade, perhaps?), it'll remind the world that PC gaming is, in fact, not dead. Hit the source link to sign up for more, or head on past the break for a look at the ominous teaser vid.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/21/razer-teaser-reminds-us-that-pc-gaming-is-not-dead-neither-ar/

Despite Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg's claim last week that EA's bullish attitude in the run-up to the release of Battlefield 3 was "bad for the industry," it appears EA has no intention to tone down the rhetoric. Speaking to Industry Gamers, corporate spokesman Jeff Brown said: "Welcome to the big leagues Eric - I know you're new in the job but someone should have told you this is a competitive industry. You've got every reason to be nervous. Last year Activision had a 90 [per cent] share in the shooter category. This year, Battlefield 3 is going to take you down to 60 or 70. At that rate, you'll be out of the category in two to three years. If you don't believe me, go to the store and try to buy a copy of Guitar Hero or Tony Hawk."

In part one I showed you that you could install a linux distro on a new computer and transplant it into a 386 computer in a short amount of time and with little effort. Now it is time to move on to bigger and beefier machines like 486′s, Pentiums and better.
I am going to break this quick tutorial down into sections based on installed RAM. While this won’t be a “how to” for all old PCs in the world I hope to at least send you in the right direction. I will mention a few distributions mainly for the super low ram machines. Its not my intent to start a distrubution war, and I have not personally sat down with every single one to make a educated assessment. However, you’re more than welcome to chime in.
Join us after the break and see what options you have for that old “boat anchor” sitting in the closet!

Virgin Gaming has increased its prize fund to €3 million (£2.6m) in cash over the next 12 months.
The service was launched in June last year, when it offered cash prizes worth $1 million (£606,000) over the following 12 months. The new fund has raised that amount by more than 400 per cent.
The extra money is necessary to support a new tournament format, Series Tournaments, which is launching this Thursday.
Series Tournaments will allow Virgin Gaming members to enter, leave, and resume tournaments with more freedom, allowing tournaments to be played more often and resolved more quickly.
"We're always listening to our members, and one thing we kept hearing was they wanted more frequent tournaments for larger prize pools,' said Virgin Gaming co-founder Zachary Zeldin in a statement.
"We can't wait for them to try this new style of tournament; it's going to let us to host more games and accommodate our unrivalled million euro prize pools."
At the time of its launch, Virgin Gaming's financial structure returned 88 per cent of player fees as cash prizes, and took the remaining 12 per cent as a management fee.
Earlier this month, the service further expanded its game portfolio by signing a partnership agreementwith Ubisoft.
