A substantial update for the PC version of Double Fine's adventure classic Psychonauts has dropped in from out of nowhere.
The developer today announced that Steam users can download a patch that adds in achievements, cloud saves and modifications that make the game's infamously tricky Meat Circus section a little easy to manage.
On top of that, awesome-sounding private investment outfit Dracogen Strategic Investments has stepped up to help fund a Mac version of the game, available now on Steam and the Mac App Store.
"I have been a fan of Psychonauts and Double Fine for a long time," commented Dracogen CEO Steven Dengler, "and I'm extremely happy to be helping them bring their games to new platforms like the Macintosh. All hail the supremacy of Dragons!"
Finally, there's also a new iOS app up for download. The Psychonauts Vault Viewer lets you view the game's Memory Vaults with newly-recorded audio commentary from creators Tim Schafer and Scott Campbell.
The game originally launched on PC, PlayStation 2 and Xbox back in 2005. Not played it? Eurogamer'sPsychonauts review should explain why you need to catch up.

At an EA showcase event in Las Vegas, the publisher has announced that Syndicate will be released in North America on February 21, and in Europe on February 24.
The announcement of the reboot, which is being developed by Swedish studio Starbreeze, was met with some disdain when it emerged that the classic strategy title was being turned into an FPS. Speaking to OXM earlier this month, game director Neil McEwan said that his team were mindful of straying too far from the original.
"We're big fans of the original Syndicate, and we're definitely paying as much homage to it as we can - bringing across the essence of the world, the core essence of what it is to be an Agent," he said.
"That sounds wanky but it's true - we're taking the Persuadatron and evolving it in different ways, the weapons and brutality. On both facets of the game, the co-op and the singleplayer, it's very key to stay true to it."

A remake of Duke Nukem 3D, approved by Gearbox Software and developed by fan collective Interceptor Entertainment, has been put on hold for an indefinite period.
"Interceptor Entertainment has decided to finish Duke Nukem: Reloaded at a future date that is yet to be determined," said the developer on its official site.
"Interceptor Entertainment still has the good will and non commercial license provided to us to use the Duke Nukem brand for our creative ambitions. We hope to resume that work again when the time is right."
Gearbox granted the project, then titled Duke Nukem: Next Gen, a licence after Interceptor Entertainment contacted its vice president PJ Putnam.
The game, built with Unreal Engine 3, was intended to be a free product complete with single player and multiplayer campaigns.
"Interceptor Entertainment looks forward to revisiting the DNR project in the future, along with several other new, creative pursuits."

BioWare has explained how gamers will be able to play Star Wars: The Old Republic before its release date.
Anyone who pre-orders the upcoming PC online RPG will be able to redeem an ‘Early Game Access’ code online to download and play it ahead of its December 22nd launch in the UK.
“When you actually gain admittance to Early Game Access, this will be determined in a first-come, first-served manner dependent on when you redeemed your pre-order code,” explained BioWare’s senior community manager Stephen Reid.
“While we aren’t ready to talk about the exact timing of when Early Game Access starts, as that depends on a number of factors including testing and pre-order numbers, we'll announce that before the start date.”
Reid went on to add that developer BioWare and publisher EA will take a staggered approach to letting players into the servers.
“Part of the point of a head start program like this is to allow us to gradually ramp up the population of our servers so that on launch day, the general play experience is as pleasant as possible.
“While we're going to be allowing a lot of people into Early Game Access at regular intervals, we cannot allow everyone who pre-orders in at once. That would defeat the point of a gradual head start.”
BioWare announced the long-awaited release date of Star Wars: The Old Republic at the 2011 Eurogamer Expo last weekend. It will arrive in the US on December 20th and in Europe on December 22nd.
There will be a boxed version of the game as well as a downloadable version exclusive to EA’s new Origin platform.

"Google's Chrome is on the brink of replacing Firefox as the second-most-popular browser, says the Web statistics firm StatCounter, which shows that Chrome will pass Firefox to take the No. 2 spot behind Microsoft's IE no later than December. As of Wednesday, Chrome's global average user share for September was 23.6%, while Firefox's stood at 26.8%. IE, meanwhile, was at 41.7%. The climb of Chrome during 2011 has been astonishing: It has gained eight percentage point since January 2011, representing a 50% increase. During that same period, Firefox has dropped almost four percentage points, a decline of about 13%, while IE has also fallen four points, a 9% dip. That means Chrome is essentially reaping all the defections from Firefox and IE."

Newly launched streaming games service OnLive has become the number two method of digital distribution for PC games, according to publisher feedback.
Steve Perlman, CEO, said that more companies are getting onboard the service and are increasingly keen to tailor content to its users demands.
"Publishers have bought into it, they get it, they know that it works, and the cheques at the end of the month help," he toldGamesIndustry.biz.
"The publishers are telling us we're number two in terms of digital distribution behind Steam.
"We're getting exclusive demos. Doing a demo is something that's hard to develop. For example on Red Faction: Armageddon there was an Xbox demo but not a PlayStation 3 or PC version - they put it on OnLive instead. This is the first time a platform has been released that doesn't present itself as a direct competitor to the other platforms."
The US has been the UK's beta test. This is a new animal, there's going to be things we have to learn.
Steve Perlman, OnLive
Launching in the UK last week, OnLive has received some criticism for its pricing structure, in particular with new games - although prices are set by the publishers not the distributor.
However, in the US, where the service launched over 15 months ago, the company has continued to tweak pricing and offers in response to consumer feedback, with Perlman saying it plans to take the exact same approach in the UK.
"The US has been the UK's beta test. We've had 15 months of live experience there, not just on the technology side but with what users want, how to package features and build up the game library," he offered.
"Try it out, show your friends, give us feedback, we can change things. That's why we took it to the Eurogamer Expo to begin with, these guys are hardcore gamers and they will be vocal. This is a new animal, there's going to be things we have to learn. The whole Play Pack deal, the fact it even existed, is a result of feedback. This isn't movie streaming, you have to think about it differently," he added.
UK consumers can currently buy the OnLive micro console online or from retail partner GAME - although that partnership is likely to be short-lived once the technology is available built-in to consumer hardware.
"Over the next weeks we expect that we'll be announcing TV, Blu-ray and media players that will be available in the UK with OnLive built in," stated Perlman.
Although confident of the service and its offering, Perlman wasn't willing to reveal any target numbers for uptake in the UK, suggesting it's too early to make predictions on adoption.
"It's very hard to know," he said. "It's a new animal. In my career I've launched a lot of new things and it takes time.
"In the US we had to gradually build up from 18 games and some of the early adopters tried it but it didn't have enough for them so they moved on. In the UK we have a very robust system with a lot of games, a big library. This is one of the most difficult things in the world to predict."

Cars 2 and other Disney properties with bridge the gap between toys and iPad gaming next month thanks to the company's new Appmates range.
The Disney Appmates Mobile Application Toys, to use their full name, are small figurines that interact with the Apple tablet and use it as a play mat. Sensors on the base of each serve as a footprint so that the associated app can track where the toy is on the screen and therefore in the game world.
The initial line of Appmates will be based on Cars 2 characters such as Mater and Lightning McQueen, with the Cars 2 Appmates app featuring racing, exploration and a collection of driving-related mini-games. Each toy unlocks different content and activities related to their abilities.
The toys will be available in US stores on October 1st, with the app following in early to mid-October. Additional characters will be available in November
"We have cracked the technology code in changing the way kids play with their toys," said Sunny Lauridsen, director of digital toys for Disney Consumer Products.
"Kids will always use toys to play out their favourite Disney stories but Disney Appmates now allow them to include technology which has become a way of life from them through a beautifully rich app."

Sega has Steam activation compulsory for the next edition of Football Manager, after claiming that at least four fifths of the game’s players are using pirated copies.
Those who buy the upcoming football management simulation will need to install Steam, if they haven’t already, and activate the game through Valve’s online network.
Sega insists that this one-time activation is the only measure that will be taken to prevent piracy. Players can play offline. Yet the announcement has met resistance with vocal members of the Football Manager community.
Games in the FM series typically suffer an 80 per cent piracy rate

An ITV documentary aired last night in UK reportedly used footage from PC war sim Arma II as evidence of the IRA’s procurement of weapons from Colonel Gaddafi.
The film, called 'Exposure – Gaddafi and the IRA' supposedly showed a scene of IRA militants gunning down a helicopter using vehicle-mounted weaponry.
However, the clip was actually sourced from a fan-made Arma II video.
Marek Spanel, the CEO of Arma II developer Bohemia, toldGamasutra that he knew nothing of the ITV’s move prior to last night’s airing: "We were not aware of this video.
"First of all, we are very surprised to see in-game footage referred to in the documentary as real IRA film from 1988. We have no idea how this footage made it to the documentary. Our games are very open and allows users to freely do a lot of things, I see this is somehow a bizarre use of creative freedom.”

While Just Cause 2 developer Avalanche Studios' top-down shooter was released on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network two weeks ago, publisher Sega has remained tight-lipped about the PC version's release date. Until now: Renegade Ops will be available from Steam on October 14.
To make up for it, PC buyers will be able to choose a fifth playable character: Half-Life protagonist Gordon Freeman. Naturally, he'll be driving the Half-Life 2 buggy, and his special ability sees him unleash the Antlions

Thatgamecompany's Flower follow-up, the online adventureJourney, never had a concrete release date, though the initial fact sheet said it would be released this year. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, co-founder Jenova Chen reveals that Journey will now be released next spring.
"For the past few months, we kept getting asked about Journey's release date," he writes. "Yes, we haven't said anything about our release in a while, mainly because we really couldn't tell. And we don't want to throw out a date that we are not sure about and later disappoint our players.
"Fortunately, the online beta went very well, and our continued playtests have given us great feedback on the work we have left to complete. While there is still a ton of care and polish needed, we can't wait to finally deliver Journey."

During a Tokyo press conference earlier today, Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada admitted that the overwhelmingly critical response to the PC release of Final Fantasy XIV means that "the Final Fantasybrand has been greatly damaged."
Last December, the publisher delayed the planned March release of Final Fantasy XIV for PS3 while it ironed out the PC version's numerous kinks. Producer Hiromichi Tanaka stood down and was replaced by Naoki Yoshida, and the game's free trial period was extended until it was was in an acceptable state.
According to Wada, the repair job has taken Square Enix right back to the drawing board. "We'll continue with our reform work, which basically amounts to fully redoing the game," he said, "and hope to revive the FFXIV that should have been released."
Wada also moved to reassure users that the announcement ofDragon Quest X, an online title for Wii and Wii U, did not mean that all future games in the series would be online. "We're not making them all online," he said. "We'll continue with a variety of developments, online included."

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has said he doesn't expect the next version of the popular Unreal Engine to launch until 2014.
"I spend about 60 percent of my time every day doing research work that's aimed at our next generation engine and the next generation of consoles," Sweeney told IGN.
"This is technology that won't see the light of day until probably around 2014, but focusing on that horizon enables me to do some really cool things that just aren't practical today, but soon will be."
He went on to argue that one of the biggest challenges for new technology will be dealing with multiple CPU cores.
"Once you have 20 cores, you can't easily say this one is going to be for animation and this one is going to be for details on the face of the character, because all these parameters change dynamically as different things come on screen and load as you shift from scene to scene," he explained.
"The big challenge will be redesigning our engine and our workload so that we scale more of these different computer tasks between CPU cores seamlessly in real-time and dynamically so that you're always getting the maximum computing power out with the engine, regardless of what sort of work you're doing."
Epic was founded by Sweeney and Mark Rein in 1991, and currently has around 120 employees, developing both the Unreal Engine, and games like the Gears Of War franchise. Gears Of War 3 was released last week, and was the seventh biggest 360 launch of all time.

A new version number for a browser release may not be quite as major as it used to be, but Mozilla is promising a few fairly big improvements with the just-released Firefox 7. The biggest of those are all in the performance department, including "significantly" reduced memory usage (up to 50 percent less in some cases), and a new version of the hardware-accelerated Canvas that promises to speed up HTML5 sites. Also making its debut is a new Telemetry feature that lets users anonymously provide browser performance data to Mozilla if they choose to opt-in. Hit the links below for the complete rundown and download link.

Less than a week after entering a random-timing public beta, League of Legends'Dominion mode is now available.
"Nearly a year in the making, League of Legends: Dominion represents the largest and most ambitious update to League of Legends since its launch in October of 2009," Riot stated in its release announcement. "League of Legends: Dominion is the latest example of our ongoing commitment to bringing you the best of the MOBA genre in new and innovative ways."
Dominion tweaks the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena genre of "attack a base" by shifting the action to several capture points. Those who've played Battlefield's Conquest mode or most any other game's "king of the hill" will catch on quickly.

2012 is right around the corner, you guys, and as if global pandemics and earth-shattering astronomical events weren't enough to look forward to, Trion has told Eurogamer that we should all expect an End of Nations as well.
Originally slated for a 2011 release, Trion's free-to-play meta-MMO/RTS is now set to launch sometime before the end of the world in 2012. This news follows an exhibition of the title at Eurogamer Expo 2011, where Trion also stated that items purchased through microtransactions will be relegated to cosmetic duty, as the title is not "pay to win."
