Ubisoft has acknowledged that modern PCs offer developers " a lot more grunt" than Xbox 360 or PS3 - as the firm looks to "minimise the gap" between format versions of Far Cry 3.
Speaking to VideoGamer.com, lead FC3 designer Jamie Keen said: "The PC does have a lot more grunt under the hood - or it can have grunt - so there's a lot more that we can push there. That doesn't mean to say, 'Let's only push PC and leave the consoles behind.' We will keep pushing to get as much out of the consoles as we possibly can."
Despite noting the difference between the formats, Keen claimed that "people would be surprised" by how good FC3 looks on console, and that the difference "might not be as much as people realise".
He added: ""That's why we're making no bones about this being on PC, and everything that goes along with that. There are going to be areas where the consoles aren't going to be able to push things as much as the PC can.
"So, there is going to be a difference, but as much as we can minimise that gap, we're certainly working as hard as we possibly can to do that."
Keen's comments come after Ubisoft's production boss suggested that devs were being "extremely limited" by the long lifecycle of modern consoles.

Remember that incredible GTA IV PC mod that made Rockstar's crime opus look borderline photo realistic (in some areas at least)? Well, now it looks even better.
-The makers of the iCEnhancer mod have announced the release of version 1.25 and celebrated with a rather tasty trailer, which you can see below.
The last version of the mod already included new car models, high resolution textures, new visual effects, a zombie survival mode (oh yes), enhanced AI enabling NPCs to commit crimes and the ability to carry bodies.

Remember the Xtion Pro and Wavi Xtion motion sensors that Asus showed off at CES? Well, fast-forward six months and there's already an updated model on the market: the Windows- and Linux-compatible Xtion Pro Live. The new version complements the original's IR and depth sensors with a Kinect-like VGA webcam and a pair of microphones, while also jacking up the bill to a distinctly un-Kinect-like 175 Euros ($300). That price tag won't make us shift our living room furniture around anytime soon, especially since Kinect is already officially heading to the PC. However, that isn't really the point: the Pro Live edition is primarily meant to help developers design better games and apps for the more consumer-focused but as yet unreleased Wavi. Soon as they develop a game that rewards rather than punishes us for dancing like Tina Turner, we'll be right there.

Valve will overhaul its Steam distribution platform with new server and client code.
The aim is to streamline the publishing process and provide the service's worldwide users with better download rates.
"The maximum aggregate bandwidth of the system will be greater than the current system; this will help us satisfy spikes in demand when there's a big release," Valve said in a statement.
"We will also be able to send content from more places, to better serve people all around the globe. All the content on the new system is sent via HTTP; this is more firewall-friendly than the current system, and will automatically take advantage of web-caching proxies installed at ISPs."
The overhauled Steam will also require users to download less data for game updates. At present, when an individual file on disk is modified it is necessary to download the whole file again, but the new system will be able to deliver only the difference between the old and new versions.
In addition, the new system will be able to download game updates during play, and apply the changes when the user exits the game.
"These changes have given us an opportunity to write new tools for game developers and content publishers that simplify the process of both publishing and updating a game on Steam. Simplifying the publishing process means it takes the partner and us less time to ship each product, so we can ship more stuff to more users."
Valve is also adding a number of new features in response to requests from its clients. New releases will benefit from bandwidth throttling, download scheduling, and users will be able to prioritise which purchases begin downloading first.
Currently, the only content available through the new system is a high-definition trailer, but Valve will apply the system to more content over time, including the forthcoming Dota 2.

July 17th, 2011, 23:25 Posted By: wraggster
via http://www.aep-emu.de/
A new version of the Doom source port Doom Legacy has been released.
Quote:
FEATURES 1.44 alpha3
Stop demos when menu opens.
Voodoo doll damage effects upon players are restored.
Voodoo doll mode control (Vanilla, Multispawn, Target, Auto).
Voodoo doll telefrag instadeath control (Die, Damage, Zap).
Remove hard limits for brain targets.
Start game menu asks user "Abort this game. Y/N" when user is already in a game, and upon "YES" will abort the game and continue.
Mouse will no longer change menu values without pushing a button.
DoomLegacy demo format will have a header of version 144, and the characters "DL". DoomLegacy demos shall only use the one demo version number.
Three later fields shall record the DoomLegacy VERSION, demoversion, and sub-demoversion numbers. Not yet enabled, alpha still writes demoversion 143.
Changed to MBF style sector friction (from examination of Killough code in prboom), making DoomLegacy more consistent with DoomLegacy 2.0, prboom and
other modern ports, with some fixes and differences. Water friction and Heretic friction are also converted to sector friction. Sectors get the friction and movefactor values at load time, and are updated whenever a flag or friction control changes. Finds stickiest friction on icy sector edge too. Independent friction for each 3dfloor slab. Old boom friction thinker code is compile-time conditional (FRICTIONTHINKER), and is only used for demos. Demos select appropriate friction code.
Did not preserve perfect demo compatibility with Boom and prboom.
Converted to independent player bob momentum of Killough, as in DoomLegacy 2.0,
MBF and prboom, with fixes and adaptations.
Compile-time conditional on BOB_MOM.
Fixes many problems of previous bobbing, such as bobbing while riding conveyor, and interaction with friction.
Monsters use same sector friction as players.
Selection mechanism for monster friction (none, MBF, momentum).
The MBF monster friction only gives the monster momentum on ice, and this creates surge when moving off ice, and stall when moving onto ice.
Momentum monster friction selection accumulates momentum on every move, and fixes the surge and stall problems.
Additional code to prevent hangups on dropoff ledges, get monster unstuck from edges, and to allow monsters to fall off conveyor belts.
Create Adv Options menu, for monster friction, gravity, voodoo mode, voodoo insta-death, and door delay.
FEATURES 1.44 alpha2
Boom demo headers are now recognized and the demos play better.
They will not stay in sync, but will no longer crash the engine.
Revised game description tables now have three wad names for each game type, to recognize more naming variations.
Sprites Limit: Adjust the number of sprites displayed by software renderer from 128 to 16384, depending upon where your machine bogs down.
Removed sprite display limits in software renderer.
The number of displayed sprites is dynamically adjusted according to the sprite count, and the user setting in the Effects menu.
The menu control gives a soft limit from 128, upto 16384 sprites.
The sprite display is hard limited to twice the user setting.
When there are too many sprites, the nearest sprites have preference, the farther sprites have semi-random visibility (they flicker),
so the player can sporatically see the sprites in the distance.
Savegame size is now unlimited, and uses much smaller savegame buffer.
Replaced the odd command line switches for game development with one switch that specifies the gamename.
FEATURES 1.44 alpha1
New Effects menu, makes room for the additional user controls.
Gamma generation: Gamma table is generated from the selected gamma function (Gamma, Gamma_black, Gamma_bright_black, Linear).
The Gamma function has 25 gamma setpoints.
The Gamma_black function has gamma and black level controls.
The Gamma_bright_black function has gamma, black level, and bright level controls.
The Linear function has two setpoint controls, each of which has 25 positions.
Door delay: Option control that slows doors by x1.5, x2, etc. so that player has more time to get through them.
SoftError: Many hard errors (fatal) have been changed to soft errors, where the user will get one message, and the game will be allowed to continue.
Voodoo dolls added. The voodoo doll was an accident of the original Doom, that many wads made use of to trigger linedef actions.
Extra player1 starts now create voodoo dolls, with the last being the actual player1 start position.
Demo fixes. Demos that Legacy cannot play back are now recognized and rejected, so they do not crash the engine.
Z_Malloc allocation compile options, user selectable in z_zone.c.
PLAIN_MALLOC: Large memory, no reclaimation.
TAGGED_MALLOC: Will free allocations according to tags kept in the allocations.
ZONE_ZALLOC: Improved version of original zone allocation. Allocates
from large pre-allocation of memory, with tags, and frees allocations
according to tags.
GROW_ZONE: Option on ZONE_ZALLOC that grows the memory usage when free
blocks cannot be found. This is the default now.
AGGRESSIVE_PURGE: Option on ZONE_ZALLOC that aggressively purges
downgraded allocations instead of leaving them as cache.
Mostly for testing memory usage code, but also usable for small memory.
Texture generation now handles multi-patch transparent textures. The code selects between three rendering methods, one of which creates a single patch transparent 2-sided texture from the source
multi-patch texture.
This now software renders the gates in Phobia.wad correctly.
Game determination characteristics and parameters are now in one table. This allows special game wads to be added easily without errors. The table
specifies a Legacy support wad for the specific game that will now be automatically loaded (none exist yet).
Savegame format now has a header that specifies the name, map number, time, the wad, and the command line switches. The savegame display shows the name, map, and time. Upon loading the savegame must
match the current wad.
Savegame format now records the endian and word size. Loading now detects these and other critical parameters to intercept incompatible savegames.
Savegame now allows up to 99 savegames in one directory. This is a compile option.
Savegame now supports savegame directories. You can have a separate savegame directory for each wad. This is a compile option.
Hardware renderer now can display Boom colormaps.
Hardware renderer now has lighting level variation with colormaps.
Chexquest support is enhanced. The Doom pictures that are in the Chexquest wad are now blocked when in Chexquest game mode, along with
blood splats and Doom episode names. Chexquest splats are less violent.
Full international keyboard support (SDL).
New joystick/gamepad code, should support all modern controllers (SDL).
New FS functions.
Audio output samplerate raised to 22 kHz.

"Is Minecraft really changing the gaming industry fundamentally? This author certainly thinks so, and even goes so far as to consider Minecraft's world manipulation a paradigm shift along the lines of 3D-gaming during the early '90s. 'Every block in the game is available to pick up and reallocate. We can tear down and build up. The neat thing is that future games does not need to be as liberal, but they will need to consider how they can make the environment a hell of a lot more manipulable. Now, this is quite a bit too simplified and the vast majority of games must not feature a shovel worthy of digging to the center of the earth, but giving the user power over everyday things (still in game worlds) will be a worthy challenge to consider.'"
Minecraft may give us power over everyday things in the real world, too.

Blizzard has shared the plan for two big e-sports events at BlizzCon in Anaheim, CA, and it looks like there's going to be a full plate of noobs, ownage and ggs yet again this year. Not only will the Global Battle.net Invitational showcase some of the best StarCraft 2 players from Blizzard's online multiplayer service, but the 2011 Global StarCraft League Final matches will be held at the same event, pitting the best of the best at the game against each other.
Those are just the two StarCraft 2 events -- Blizzard traditionally also holds contests and tournaments for World of Warcraft arena matches and the World of Warcraft TCG at BlizzCon, and though we haven't seen an official announcement yet, it's possible we'll see some Warcraft 3 or even Diablo 3 e-sports play as well. Outside of competitive play, Blizzard usually also offers new content for attendees to play through, so Diablo 3 specifically, plus any other unannounced games, may be playable, too.
Tickets for the October 21-22 event are sold out, but the tournament play will likely be streamed online through "virtual tickets" later on this year.

It's no secret that Microsoft is planning on integrating Xbox LIVE into Windows 8, but rumors are now swirling that Xbox 360 games might actually be playable on the next version of Redmond's OS. References to "XBOX_360_SYSTEM_CRASH" have been found in the kernel code -- an odd bit of text to show up in software that's not designed to run on the 360's PowerPC CPU. There are, of course, other, more mundane possibilities -- like the ability to remotely control your console to trigger update and game downloads, or to receive notifications from the machine on your desktop. But, if Microsoft is bringing Xbox titles to the PC, it would only serve to solidify Windows as the platform of choice gamers. Guess we'll just have to wait bated breath to see what Ballmer has to tell us in January.

The growing popularity of tablet computers isn’t necessarily a threat to more established gaming devices, according to a new survey from Resolve Market Research.
The data, which was obtained by IndustryGamers, confirms the primacy of gaming on tablets, but suggests that it is whetting the public’s appetite rather than satiating it.
When asked about which device they wouldn’t buy after purchasing an iPad in 2010, 38 percent responded “portable gaming device” and 27 percent responded “console”. This year, those numbers fell to 26 percent and 14 percent respectively.
The most significant negative impact was on potential purchases of laptops and netbooks: 42 percent of those surveyed would not buy one after using a tablet, up 10 percent from last year, and 58 percent prefer tablets as a device for gaming.
Significantly, 33 percent of people admit to playing more games since they bought a tablet computer, and 13 percent said they play games significantly more.
The news will be warmly received by traditional hardware manufacturers, and particularly Nintendo. The 3DS has faltered in terms of sales, and many have attributed this, at least in part, to the popularity of gaming on iOS devices.

July 11th, 2011, 22:06 Posted By: wraggster
Indie developers can now submit games to IndieCity, a PC portal for selling indie games set up by Blitz Games.
No mainstream games are allowed.
Any developer can pop a game on IndieCity. A peer review process is designed to ensure the cream rises to the top.
If the community deems a game isn't indie, then it won't go on the system. So no FIFA, then.
"Long term I hope to create a destination that shows everyone the creativity and diversity of what gaming can do," project lead Chris Swan told Eurogamer.
"I'm not so keen on the recycled games you see in the mainstream these days. I want to see just how far you can push the boundaries of gaming. Whatever your niche, that's what we want to try and fulfil for you."
Developers determine how much a game costs, and 1200 have signed up so far. If you're a developer and you want to get your game on IndieCity, head here.
The Underground is a side of the site Swan describes as the Wild West of indie games.
"Absolutely anything goes. You don't have to have a finished game at this point. You can put up a one level demo, a half broken game, whatever you like."
The idea is developers will get a groundswell of fans early on, and then decide if they wish to finish their game.
"It's like what Notch did with Minecraft. It's the pay to finish model. You can start off and say, 'Is this working? Yeah, I've got some fans. People like it. I'll add another demo, another level to it and see how it grows.'"
Swan hopes IndieCity will uncover the next indie game developer superstar.
"For many indie developers that's what they want to do," Swan said. "Not those who believe Notch is now a sell-out. They perhaps aren't quite so keen on that.
"You don't have to be poor to be an indie developer. That's a fallacy. You don't have to be living in squalor just because you're an indie dev.
"We want to create a place where these indie devs can make a living from making their own games."
When IndieCity launches for gamers, they'll get their own personalised homepage based on what games they and their friends like.
You'll get badges, achievements and points as you use the site, for example for writing a helpful review or retweeting a developer's Tweet about their game. The creators are working on a system that will let you use points to get a discount on game purchases, too.

So much for not keeping pace, huh? We heard back in June of last year that Microsoft had blown through 150 million Windows 7 licenses, and just a few months later, it had surpassed 240 million. At this year's Worldwide Partner Conference, head honcho Steve Ballmer took great pleasure in announcing that said figure has now swollen to beyond 400 million in under two years. Not surprisingly, that makes Win7 the fastest-selling operating system in history, and Tami Reller -- corporate vice president and chief financial officer of Windows and Windows Live -- made clear that it's "the path to Windows 8." The outfit also announced that 100 million copies of Office 2010 have flown off the shelves since launch, and while no one really came out and said it, we're counting on seeing a Windows 8 build at the BUILD event this fall. Head on past the break for a whole heaping of (deserved) self-congratulations.

Thanks to continued improvements to start-up and first paint performance, tweaks to memory footprint and garbage collection, and the addition of a new 2D graphics backend called Azure, Firefox 8 is some 20% faster than Firefox 5 across all major metrics — and actually about equal with Chrome 14 on JavaScript and 2D rendering performance. Azure (which is new with Firefox 7) replaces Cairo, and instead of dealing with Direct2D and Quartz, it allows Firefox to deal directly with the Direct3D and OpenGL subsystems — resulting in a 20% speed boost under Windows, and probably even more under OS X.

Epic's Mark Rein has talked up the importance of PC to the future of gaming, insisting: "We're at the stage in the life of the consoles where the PC has shot by them in terms of capabilities."
Echoing comments made by id Software's John Carmack at E3, who said current PC gaming tech was "ten times as powerful" as current consoles, Rein argued that PC was "always the most important leading edge platform".
Speaking exclusively to Eurogamer TV, in the first part of a series of video features on PC gaming, Epic Games' VP said: "Don't forget every game that's ultimately built is built on a PC. PCs are always going to be the tools through which all games get made.
"With the PC you can simulate the future – you can put enough hardware in a PC to show you what a future console will look like."
Epic grabbed headlines at GDC earlier this year with its Samaritan Unreal demo, created to showcase the near-future of high-end gaming, but running on ultra-high spec current PC tech.
"It was kind of our love letter to hardware manufacturers," Rein explained. "The next-gen, we expect, will look like that. If you fast forward a year or two years that should be a fairly common gamer's spec.
"We hope the console manufactures look at that and go, jeez, if we aim for that in our next consoles we'll be competitive with what you'll be able to do on a PC in a year, year and half from now. A reasonably priced PC - obviously you can do it on an expensive PC already."

Boy, the future is getting crowded.
Just as we're adjusting to the futuristic game streaming of OnLive and different, but still pretty astounding Gaikai, we have to welcome the new kid. PC game streamer Happy Cloud will officially launch on the 18th of this month.
Where services like OnLive stream video of your gameplay from a remote server, Happy Cloud is actually bringing the full game to your computer. You download just the files you need to get started and then, as you play, you download the rest of the required files in the background until you have the entire game on your hard drive. Notable advantage: Offline play!
If Happy Cloud has a hurdle (and it's a big one) it's the severely limited selection. There are currently fewer than 10 titles on offer, though others like Cities in Motion and Europa Universalis will arrive soon. The company told us more games are on the way, but, for the moment, Happy Cloud's game selection seems like it's desperately in need of a silver lining.

Before stumbling back to work this morning, you might wanna take a minute to give your neurons a well-deserved massage with this new teaser for Sony's S1 and S2 tablets. Much like last month's spellbinding ad, this sequel features plenty of balls, levers and bizarre figurines moving together in serpentine synergy. If you look closely, you might even spot one of Sony's Honeycomb slates. This is only the second installation in what could very well be a never-ending series -- but we'd be OK with that, because these clips make our brains happy. Click play to get the ball rolling and let the symphony begin.
