Football Manager gaffer Miles Jacobson believes there' still "isn't really a DRM solution" and that "some DRM is evil".
The Steam DRM that Football Manager uses, however, is not evil and benefits the player in a lot of ways, according to the Sports Interactive studio director.
When we asked Jacobson about his thoughts on DRM and whether it was the right approach to combating piracy, he pointed out that the issue is far muddier than that:
"I don't think there is a right approach to how you handle piracy. I don't think there ever will be a right approach to how you handle piracy, but then I don't think piracy is right either."
When we suggested that DRM might be a lesser of two evils, then, he again said there were factors that made the whole issue far from being black and white.
"It depends which system you're using really," he replied. "Some DRM is evil, some isn't. I don't think that Steam is evil DRM, I think it's a really good helpful platform that gives a lot of benefits to the customer.
"But there still isn't really a DRM solution that works, there isn't one that stops people copying games. It's a difficult position for any developer to be in," he continued.
"Basically I would like nothing more than to not have to put any DRM onto my titles ever and to allow people to freely make copies and back-ups of discs to their heart's content.
"Unfortunately there are dishonest people in the world who would take advantage, who would sell copied versions of the game, who would give those copies of the game away to their mates who haven't bought it and I do believe that people who make games should be paid for work that they're doing.
"In a perfect world there'd be no DRM. We don't live in a perfect world," he concluded.
Ubisoft would probably disagree with Jacobson. The publisher hailed DRM as a success back in July, pointing to a "clear reduction in piracy". But then, a lot of gamers would disagree with Ubisoft when it comes to DRM.

Football Manager 2012 has been announced and will be released "before Christmas".
Sega and developer Sports Interactive highlighted the key improvements.
Loyalty bonuses have been added to the transfer and contracts part of the game. The amateur and youth contracts have been smartened up, and you can lock variables in negotiations where you aren't prepared to budge.
Scouts now deliver in-game reports that consider nearly all aspects of an opponent's game to ensure you're well prepared before kick-off.
The 3D Match has been improved with new animations, "a whole new crowd system", better weather, more stadiums and two new camera angles: Behind Goal and Director Cam.
Football Manager 2012 lets you add or take away playable nations from your saved game whenever you like.
Tone has been added to team talks and conversations, which lets you dictate whether you want to be calm or hot-headed.
There's a new layout system that adapts to higher resolution screens by displaying more content. There are new filters, customisable columns, tactics and overview screens as well.
Football Manager 2012 offers a new and separate tutorial for new players.
Sega and Sports Interactive also outlined "huge improvements" to the media system, press conferences, youth system, newgens, social networking options, friendlies, international management "and many more" areas of the game.

The “cheap” and “easy” way in about an hour! A question that pop’s up from time to time is “I somehow ended up with an archaic old laptop / computer, can it run Linux?” Well of course it can, but that totally depends! On what? Well machine CPU, CPU speed, hard disk space, RAM and most importantly what you are expecting it to do.
Okay, why a Intel 386? Well number one I own a 386, but more importantly its the absolute bottom Intel CPU you can run Linux on. While it wont be able to do much, it will give you a basic system to kick around and “get to know” the insides of Linux without a million things installed and the worry of breaking it.
Unfortunately a 386 requires some special moves as the actual chip was dropped from almost all distributions long ago. All of the modern distributions I have looked at require at least a 486 CPU. This tutorial will be strictly for installing a basic bare bones Linux on a 386. Have a 486? Pentium? Faster? Never fear I will be covering that in a part II later this week.
Linux on a 386 in about an hour? Madness you might think, it probably takes Linux longer to boot on a 386 (and in some cases you are correct)! Want to know the trick? Simple, cheat!
Join me after the break for the parts and steps needed to get you started.

Lending further gravity to the proposed crackdown being bandied about in British parliament, an Essex teen has been arrested for sending a BBM that ran afoul of the Serious Crime Act of 2007. The 18-year old, now free on bail, allegedly used the service to encourage copycat attacks of the violent rioting that's swept London, and is set to appear in court on September 1st. It's the second known case to put RIM's private messaging service -- "popular among urban teenagers" as a cheap texting alternative -- in the UK's legal hotseat. For its part, the Canadian electronics maker has since reached out to police, promising to aid the investigation "in any way [it] can." Although no decision has yet been made to extend law enforcement's powers over social media services, such as Twitter and Facebook, arrests like these seem to indicate a murky free speech future.

It looks like the sly fox is ready to make its worldwide debut a few days early. In typical Mozilla fashion, a complete build of Firefox 6 is now unofficially available for your downloading pleasure, three days ahead of schedule. If you're looking for a major facelift to the desktop edition, you won't find one here -- most of the new features aren't cosmetic. Perhaps most visibly, you'll find the domain name of the page you're parked on highlighted in the address bar. On the Android side, version 6 makes much bigger promises, like a "fresh visual style in Chrome Gingerbread," enhanced image scaling, and, perhaps most importantly, it's "faster and uses less memory." We've downloaded the desktop version of the browser ourselves, and we've found the release quite snappy. If you're not afraid of a little pre-release downloading, you can catch the (desktop) fox at the source links below. And as per usual, please let us know how it's treating you.

One of the original engineers of IBM's first PC says PCs are 'going the way of the vacuum tube, typewriter, vinyl records, CRT and incandescent light bulbs.' With the 30th anniversary of the IBM 5150 (running MS-DOS) coming this week, IBM CTO Mark Dean argues that the post-PC world is very much upon us, perhaps not surprising given that IBM sold its PC business in 2005. Microsoft, of course, weighed in as well, saying the PC era is nowhere near over. But perhaps in the future we will consider a personal computer anything a person does computing on — whether that be laptop, tablet, smartphone, or something that hasn't even been invented yet."

It may not have been the best kept secret around, but Google's now made what's surely the biggest addition to Google+ in its short lifespan: games. Unlike a certain other social network, Google says games in Google+ are "there when you want them and gone when you don't," meaning that they won't flood your main stream if you never play them -- you have to click the games icon at the top of the page to play and see updates from your circles. According to Google, the service is rolling out "gradually" starting today, but should be available to all Google+ users "soon."

Sifteo has priced and dated its new Sifteo Cube devices for the US, with an initial offering of $149 for three of the Cubes and a wireless USB dongle to link them to a PC or Mac.
The Cubes will start shipping to US and Canadian customers this September.
Sifteo Cubes are 1.5" displays fitted with motion sensors, wireless transmitters and sensors to detect each other. Motion and proximity will cause the devices to react and interact in various ways, offering several different opportunities for what the makers call "intelligent play".
Videos on the product website illustrate several loosely educational concepts for possible games, as well as more traditional gaming concepts.
Included in the package is the Sifteo Creativity Kit, essentially a lightweight SDK which will allow graphical customisation of existing games and activities as well as the creation of completely new ones.
The devices were first revealed to the public at CES in January, after a $10 million round of funding secured the project's development.
At that time, Will Wright was rumoured to have visited the company to discuss the possible involvement of his project, Stupid Fun Club.

GameFly hasn't wasted any time jumping into the digital download waters after acquiring IGN's Direct2Drive platform a little over two months ago. Set to launch September 8th in beta form, its new "Unlimited PC Play" service will offer subscribers access to 100-plus downloadable PC and Mac titles, with hundreds more expected in time for the official end of year launch. Fans of the video game rentaloutfit's snail mail subscription service don't have to worry about a shift to digital only, as the company has no plans to abandon its "unique combination of console and digital PC game offerings." Interested in getting an early peek at the new platform? If you live in the Los Angeles area, you can look forward to a planned beta launch party next month, where access codes for the new, invite-only service will be distributed. The rest of you PC gaming warriors will just have to settle for a sign-up page at the source.

August 9th, 2011, 23:34 Posted By: wraggster
In an exclusive interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Gaikai CEO David Perry has revealed that the cloud gaming company has signed up the majority of video game publishers.
While the company has inked a deal with retail giant Walmart and is in talks with other online stores, it has only revealed two publishing partners publicly - Electronic Arts and Capcom.
"I would say almost all of the major publishers are actually in contracts with us right now, so we're making very good progress with them," he revealed.
"It's a strange situation, it's kind of surprising but the only way you can place your video game on your own website is through us, there's no other way to do it."
The interest is keeping the Gaikai team busy. "We have three different attorney firms working for us just on agreements right now."
He also revealed that Gaikai had a new, super-speedy digital download technology currently in closed beta, for those users that are unable to make use of cloud gaming due to slow internet connections.
It's a strange situation, but the only way you can place your videogame on your own website is through us.
David Perry, Gaikai
"The concept there is just insanely fast downloads from your browser, your web browser delivering games to the user," Perry explained.
"We did that for two reasons. One is that we wanted to be able to let everybody play, and number two is if somebody decides to buy the game or download the MMO, we have to have the fastest way to get it to them. And that's what we've built."
When asked if he thought the service was a threat to consoles, Perry said that single-function hardware is more likely threatened by companies like Apple, which iterate technology at a very rapid rate.
"We don't think we're a threat to console. I think the threat to consoles is actually Apple. I think the concern there is that they're generating hardware so quickly now."
"If you're creating and shipping new hardware every 12 months, and during that 12 months you're also giving pretty impressive upgrades, the features that people want, and you’re giving them those every 6 months and hardware every 12 months, I think the idea that you would have five to seven years on hardware refreshes is becoming a technical problem."
He also saw handhelds as facing a murky future thanks to the introduction of smartphones.
"They really need to be that sort of multifunction device to survive. And if you think about it, that ultimately turns them into cellphones. So I don't think cloud gaming is their problem."
"When you talk to younger kids today, most of them don't have wristwatches, and the reason is they only do one thing. And they don't want to carry anything that just does one thing. They carry their phone and it does everything. And so if you make single function devices, then you've got a problem."
David Perry is CEO and co-founder at Gaikai, and will be speaking at the Cloud Gaming USA in September.

It seems like I’ve been making this game forever. I’ve restarted making it completely from scratch on at least two occasions and I have certainly learned a lot in the process. But now more then ever I’m considering myself done with it. You shouldn’t expect any further updates. Here is version 1.0 of They Do Not Die.
What has changed:
You can now save your game.
You can obviously also load that game save and continue playing from where you left off.
Running consumes less energy.
shooting now consumes energy (just enough to stop it from regenerating).
Health regenerates at half speed when you aren’t full on energy.
I’ve removed the on screen frame rate counter.
The music no longer plays improperly slow in the Wii version.
The performance has improved in the Windows version.
Wii controls:
Nunchuck analog stick = Move
A button = Run
B button = Shoot
Windows controls:
WASD or arrow keys = Move
Shift = Run
Left mouse button = Shoot
Extra credits:
The background music is as always by RekcahDam.
Links:
Download the Wii version
Download the Windows version
Other notes:
I had planned to include user submitted levels. But with only one entry so far I’ve decided against it. If you want to play that one level then you can find it here. It is titled Zombie Death Maze and was made by Mr. Reaper.
You can also find Mr. Reaper’s reskin for the game here.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick says consumer excitement surrounding Modern Warfare 3 is on a scale he hasn't witnessed before.
The executive told Reuters he couldn't disclose the number of pre-orders the publisher has taken for the game, but that it is "meaningfully different" to those for last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops.
"It's sort of surprising because you always go into the launch of a new Call of Duty game with an expectation that ... it's a hard number to beat, but if you look at the player enthusiasm for Modern Warfare 3, I don't know if we've really seen anything like it in our 21-year history."
Retailer GAME said last month it expects MW3 to break all UK pre-order records and become the firm's bestselling title ever.
Check out the most recent Modern Warfare 3 screenshots here.
