It's Kinect's birthday and Microsoft is celebrating with a couple of announcement for the PC crowd.
First up Kinect for Windows, the official and commercial development tool kit, will be released in early 2012.It has also announced the release of the SDK 2, for all those who've already been toying around with the motion-sensing bar on PC - which is quite a few, according to MS.
"Currently, we have more than 200 companies taking part in our pilot program," said Kinect for Windows general manager Craig Eisler.
"They are telling us how Kinect for Windows will help them transform their products, their processes, their brands, and their businesses. Putting the power of Kinect + Windows into the hands of business leaders and technical visionaries will give them the tools they need to develop novel solutions for everything from training employees to visualizing data, from configuring a car to managing an assembly line."
Eisler says the newest software improves Kinect's motion-tracking abilities, "including faster skeletal tracking, better accuracy rate when it comes to skeletal tracking and joint recognition, and the ability to plug and unplug your Kinect without losing work/productivity".
There's more through the source link, and you can download the new SDK here.

The future of webOS may still be up in the air, but it looks like HP is at least still making a small effort to woo developers and keep its current ones in the fold. It's now giving registered devs in the US, Canada and Europe a chance to get a 32GB HP TouchPad for the blowout price of $150 (or €150 in Europe), for a limited time and while supplies last. Unfortunately, it's not clear how many TouchPads will be available, but HP is allowing applicants to request up to two TouchPads each at the discounted price, so we'd assume it's more than just a handful. Those interested will have to file their request before November 18th, and if they're accepted they'll receive a coupon that must be redeemed before November 27th. All the pertinent details are at the source link below.

Lego Universe has run out of those skinny, flat, four-pronged pieces that are necessary to hold entire structures together, but that there never seem to be enough of in the Lego bin, probably because you lost them all and that's what happens when you don't take care of your things -- now go to time out and think about what you've done.
Lego Universe's problems actually run much deeper than missing pieces -- it's missing players. Since going free-to-play in August, "it has not been possible to convert a satisfactory number of players to paying subscribers," The Lego Group said. Lego Universe will officially close Jan. 31, 2012. Developer Play Well Studios in Louisville, Colorado, and the marketing division in Billund, Denmark, will be closed, affecting 115 people. We hope they'll be able to build new, better careers out of this.

Just days ahead of the worldwide release of Modern Warfare 3, Activision has announced that its Call of Duty Elite service will not launch on PC alongside the game.
Furthermore, it isn’t currently able to give an ETA.
“We’re as committed as ever to the PC, but the need to ensure a safe PC environment is greater than ever,” Beachhead Studio head Chacko Sonny stated.
“It’s really extensive. We need more time to get there, so Elite on PC will not launch on day one. We’re working our butts off to make it happen, but we won’t release it until we know that PC gamers can enjoy Elite as it’s meant to be.
“The issue here is that the PC is an insecure platform. Without a central, trusted resource for stats, a lot of our competition features become unfair. We can’t give away prizes when people can easily cheat their stats. Leaderboards are less fun when a lot of the users are there unfairly.”
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be released across the world on November 8th.

Since going free-to-play earlier this week, Sony Online Entertainment's DC Universe has picked up an extra 120,000 registrations on PC.
That's according to SOE boss John Smedley, who also noted that concurrent users are up by four times as much. To increase take up, the company is also planning a big TV and online advertising push this month.
DC Universe Online for both PC and PlayStation 3 is the latest massively multiplayer game to go free-to-play after originally launching with a subscription model.
Last month Smedley wrote for GamesIndustry.biz, stating that he believes free-to-play models are the future of online gaming, breaking down barriers to entry for new players and levelling the playing field for smaller development teams that no longer have to deal with traditional retail channels.

On top of the exciting news this morning thatStar Wars: The Old Republic has launched intoits third guild phase, CM David Bass posted a healthy wall of text on the forums listing the server types and details associated with each.
It will probably not come as a shock that SWTOR is sticking with the four core server rulesets: PvE, PvP, RP-PvE, and RP-PvP. In PvE, players have to toggle an option to engage in PvP outside of specifically designated combat areas, while on PvP servers everyone is automatically flagged outside of safe areas, such as the starting zones. The RP variants are similar, except that BioWare encourages players to roleplay in character on those servers. There's no word as to whether or not GMs will be enforcing such actions.
Because RP-PvP was a very recent addition to the server ruleset list, guilds participating in the pre-launch deployment program will not be able to choose those servers for launch. Instead, BioWare says that players interested in this ruleset will need to manually form a guild on their faction's homeworld after the game releases.

At Capcom's Gamer's Day event last month, following a presentation onResident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, producer Mike Jones made some statements that this writer took as intent to launch a public beta early next year. "Obviously there are some camera issues and stuff," he said of the build we just watched his colleague play through, "but we're nearing a pretty solid beta, which will be out early next year."
Today, Capcom posted this statement on its Capcom-Unity site dismissing the notion. So, as it stands right now, there will not be a public demo or beta forOperation Raccoon City. We here at Joystiq apologize for any confusion and strive to offer you only the facts. And the occasional Photoshop day, of course.

"When the Microsoft-Nokia strategic alliance was first announced in February, there was absolutely no mention of money: Nokia, seemingly on its own accord, had decided that Windows Phone 7 was the future of its smartphone efforts. A week later it emerged that Microsoft and Google had been competing for Nokia's affections — a bidding war that concluded with Microsoft agreeing to pay Nokia billions of dollars to help market and develop Windows phones. Fast forward to today and Nokia's CEO, Stephen Elop, is making rather odd comments about the tablet market: 'There’s a new tablet opportunity coming. We see the opportunity,' Elop said to Bloomberg Businessweek yesterday. Furthermore, he had only positive things to say about Windows 8 — that it's a "supercharged" version of WP7, but for tablets. Does that sound like Nokia is planning to bring out a Windows 8-powered tablet? Is it possible that Microsoft's multi-billion-dollar agreement with Nokia also included Windows 8?"

It's been a long and winding road for Internet Explorer, Microsoft's venerable web browser, and for over a decade it's been the browser of choice for most netizens. According to Net Marketshare's latest numbers, however, IE now enables just under half of the world's total -- meaning mobile and desktop combined -- web traffic after owning 95 percent of the browsing market seven years ago. The decline is at least partially due to a rise in mobile web browsing and an increasing Chrome user base. Of course, Microsoft's finest still has a healthy 52.63 percent desktop market share, which gives it a sizable lead over the competition from Firefox (23 percent), Chrome (18 percent), and Safari (five percent). There's plenty more graphs and charts to show you exactly how the browser war is going, so hit the links below for the full pie-chart treatment.

EA has described Syndicate as a "really tough" shooter that will challenge hardcore gamers. The Starbreeze-developed FPS has "best in breed" AI that makes for more "traditional" gameplay."It's cool," Jeff Gamon, EA Partners executive producer, told Eurogamer. "It's an excellent shooting experience. We think our AI is best of breed. It's very light on scripting. It's a very challenging, hardcore shooter game. It's very traditional in that sense. It's tough. It's really tough. It's challenging."Starbreeze's Syndicate revives what many consider to be one of the greatest strategy games of all time. While fans remain divided over this latest effort, Gamon said both EA and Starbreeze were keen to replicate the classic, Bullfrog-created Syndicate feel - including its difficulty. And he pointed to one mission in particular: Atlantic Accelerator, a mission from the first game famed for its difficulty.Syndicate's four-player co-op experience takes some of the settings from the first game and reimagines them in a new genre. Atlantic Accelerator is one of them."It's part of the legacy really," Gamon, who played Syndicate in the early nineties and completed Atlantic Accelerator, said. "Atlantic Accelerator is a case in point. It's not punishing, I don't think. What makes Syndicate fun is it is challenging without being frustrating. When you get beaten by the AI it's because they've got around you. It's not because they can bull's-eye you through cover from a million miles away. It's all about playing like a hardcore gamer. It's a good challenging experience."One aspect of the first game that is not replicated in quite the same way is the extreme gore.Bullfrog's Syndicate allowed players to mow down civilians at will - and while Starbreeze's Syndicate will allow players to kill innocents, it keeps the random murder to a minimum."It's difficult to do these days on that kind of scale, where you could use them as human shields," Gamon explained. "The world of Syndicate is these consumers who have bought into this lifestyle by putting this chip into their heads."So a lot of the action you'll raise when you go into the other syndicates' territory is in civilian areas. So, there are certainly moments in the game where civilians get in the line of fire. But you're not encouraged to or rewarded to [kill them]. They're there, basically. They're part of the environment."

Sega and Sports Interactive's latest Football Manager is forced out of the top spot on this week's official UK PC sales chart by - you guessed it - Battlefield 3, which makes its debut at No.1.
As always EA's Sims are peppered around the PC top ten, and in fact occupy half of the top spots. The Sims 3: Pets, The Sims 3 and The Sims 3: Generations sit at No.3, No.4 and No.5, while The Sims 3: Late Night and The Sims: Medeival take No.7 and No.8.
The spots in between are filled by Stronghold 3 at No.6, Rage at No.9 and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm at No.10.
Here's how the top ten for the week of ending October 29 reads:
01. Battlefield 3 (EA)
02. Football Manager 2012 (Sega)
03. The Sims 3: Pets (EA)
04. The Sims 3 (EA)
05. The Sims 3: Generations (EA)
06. Stronghold 3 (Southpeak Games)
07. The Sims 3: Late Night (EA)
08. The Sims: Medieval (EA)
09. Rage (Bethesda)
10. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm (Blizzard)

We've already seen Ubuntu running on tablets and smartphones, but not in any official capacity. Rumors had it that Canonical would be making a serious push into the tablet space in early 2011, but that effortnever materialized, or at least was never acknowledged. Still, Unity has some finger-friendly streaks and Oneiric added ARM support -- so it's not much of a stretch to see the popular Linux distro on your mobile devices. Well, at the Ubuntu Developer Summit, Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth made that move official by issuing a challenge to the Ubuntu community to start pushing beyond the traditional PC form factor. Few details were given, but Shuttleworth did say that he believes the time is right for the OS to start making moves into the tablet, phone, in-dash infotainment and smart TV spaces. There were no products to announce, but Shuttleworth was confident the OS would be ready and in shipping consumer electronics by the time version 14.04 arrived in April of 2014. Though, we're sure some prototypes will start showing up sooner rather than later.
