Social juggernaut Facebook has officially launched an instant messaging app called Messenger for Windows aimed at letting Facebook users "chat while you do other stuff."
Facebook has long had messaging built-in to the web service itself and had previously released the Messenger app installer without much in the way of an official announcement but now it seems Messenger is going mainstream.
"Millions of people log into Facebook every day to keep up with friends. They also browse other websites and run computer programs, so it’s easy to miss important stuff," said Facebook engineer Jack O'Connor in a blog post.
"You should be able to stay in touch anytime, no matter what you’re doing. So today we’re introducing Messenger, a new app that brings Facebook to your desktop," O'Connor added.
In addition to the usual instant messaging tasks, the new Windows client will also display notifications about new comments and photo tags etc as well as displaying an activity stream of friends.
Facebook said they were working on Mac version. The app can be downloaded from this web page.

A new beta version of OpenTTD 1.20 is released. OpenTTD is an open source clone of the business simulation "Transport Tycoon Deluxe" by Chris Sawyer (Microprose). In addition to very close to the original style similar implementation, including new features have been kept.
Quote:
1.2.0-beta4 (2012-02-04)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Feature: [NewGRF] Give NewGRF defined level crossings and rail depots access to the townzone (r23866)
- Feature: [NewGRF] New algorithm (activated via an engine flag) to determine the capacity of vehicles. This allows vehicles to better control the capacity for cargotypes which they know; and let cargo NewGRFs influence the capacity for cargos the vehicle NewGRF does not know, but which the vehicle is refittable to due to cargo classes (r23861)
- Feature: [NewGRF] Add cargo property 1D to set the capacity multipliers when refitting vehicles, which do not use callback 15 (r23860)
- Feature: Allow command line options -e and -g to be combined to load saves/scenarios directly into SE (r23839)
- Feature: [NoGo] Allow querying orders of vehicles [FS#4994] (r23837)
- Change: Do not let towns (ever) remove objects [FS#5001, FS#5002] (r23842)
- Change: Make signs placed in scenario editor belong to the GS. That way they are always shown in game and are not editable [FS#4999] (r23835)
- Fix: Generate industry subsidies again [FS#5039] (r23876)
- Fix: [NoGo/NoAI] Scripts with a bad comparator could lock up OpenTTD [FS#5004] (r23870)
- Fix: Make the colour of the dropdown items for opening the vehicle list for which the company has no vehicles looking less horrid [FS#5020] (r23867)
- Fix: Railtype overlays were drawn ´only transparent´ on invisible bridges (r23864)
- Fix: Inserting conditional orders for ships checked the wrong orders wrt. maximum distance (r23859)
- Fix: Out of bounds read for slowdown parameter caused desync when railtype >= 4, vehicles were fast, and the original acceleration model was used [FS#5007] (r23855)
- Fix: Infrastructure cache could get out of sync when overbuilding a drive through road stop (r23851)
- Fix: When the network is lagging, you try to copy a vehicle´s order but accidentally create a station order and then copy the vehicle´s order (before the first command is executed) one could trigger an assertion from the pool [FS#5008] (r23849)
- Fix: When removing road or tram from a tram+road stop, the owner of the road stop´s cache was updated instead of the owner of the removed infrastructure (r23847)
- Fix: Infrastructure count for stations was not updated properly on company takeover. And do not count buoys while loading a game either (r23844)
- Fix: Clear NewGRF vehicle cache when their owner changes (r23841)
- Fix: Assertion got hit when destroing a dock when a ship was loading [FS#5000] (r23838)
- Fix: If a vehicle is not refittable to any cargo in the CTT, then pick the first refittable cargoslot (r23836)

A "pre-vis" trailer for what's supposedly SimCity 5 has appeared online, pointing to a 2013 release date.
The video shows various supposed images of the game but no actual motion (pre-vis trailers are traditionally used as storyboards for the final thing).SimCity 5 rumours began to circulate last month after EA PR boss Erik Reynold tweeted: "MORE INFO! EA Maxis GDC announcement, huge event w/ special guests".
A subsequent Facebook message made stronger hints that announcement would be SimCity related: "How can we change the world together? Find out when EA hosts the Game Changers event at GDC. What would you do if you had the power to change the world?"

Those elusive white Lightsaber crystals that few SWTOR players had and others desperately wanted - they're going to be stocked at computer-brained vendors.BioWare's revelation came via a brand new style of community blog post that teased future game changes. These posts are for "enterprising players" who study patch notes and exploit economic changes to make a fast buck/credit."In related news, a very limited number of pure white colour crystals have been recovered by a Hutt-sponsored expedition into uncharted space," wrote lead combat designer Greg Zoeller.Buffed Leia.
"As of today, small stocks of these extremely rare and expensive crystals have started to appear in vendor stocks at the primary Imperial and Republic transportation hubs. With no new shipments expected for several months, those wealthy enough to afford these crystals may find themselves in possession of a highly sought-after collectable."Gamers on the The Republic side of SWTOR will also soon have access to the rare purple Lightsaber crystal, previously only for Imperial forces. Sounds like more colours will follow in the future. One mindful SWTOR player has detailed all of the new crystals available at the new vendor.BioWare also warned of an impending reduction to the range of speeders available to buy. Sovereign, Prince, Baron, Commander and Prime speeders are being discontinued, and will be offered at "steep discounts" as a result."Those wealthy enough to afford these crystals may find themselves in possession of a highly sought-after collectable."Greg Zoeller, lead combat designer, SWTOR
"Collectors and investors may want to take note that the previous limitations governing the resale of some vehicles seem to have been lifted and are encouraged to use the opportunity to purchase these legacy vehicles while they are still available," BioWare suggested. The price of speeder Tier 1 and Tier 2 licenses will see a "significant decline", but Tier 3 licence price will be "significantly increased".SWTOR patch 1.1.5 is on the game's Public Test Realm now. Patch 1.1.5 removes the Light Side / Dark Side requirements for coloured Lightsaber crystals, and much more. All the while, BioWare chugs steadily towards significant milestone, Game Update 1.2."As we work to create a more player-driven economy," BioWare noted, "you can expect significant improvements to Crew skills, and an extension of Crew skill gameplay, such as item creation and research, into the Elder-Game content. You'll also see new items brought into the game, including new schematics, Legacy items, a new tier of Player vs Player and Player vs Environment weapons and armour, Legacy items, new schematics and the ability to extract base-mods from purple items, as well as many other changes and improvements."

We get it -- there are plenty of games out there these days, and maybe with all of the chaos at the end of last year, the great Rayman Origins slipped through your fingers. Maybe this underrated Ubisoft gem didn't quite make your cut. Yes, it made money, but not nearly enough people appreciated the beauty of Rayman's hand-drawn return.
If that's the case, then it's time to fix that little omission. Steam is releasingRayman Origins on March 29, and there's now a demo available for the low price of completely free. You can also note that Steam preorders will also get a copy of Rayman 2: The Great Escape, so there's yet another reason to get you some of that "goofy, heart-swelling joy."

With each subsequent release of Windows we're left bracing for what will surely be another overwhelming assortment of retail packaging options. With Windows 7 there was a dizzying 6 SKUsto choose from and we're sorry to say that, at least for now, there are even more coming with Windows 8. As noted by windows 8 beta the registry contains the keys for all current versions of the OS and, with a quick trip to Regedit we were able to verify with the screenshot above. That boils down to the following list:- Windows 8 Starter
- Windows 8 Home Basic
- Windows 8 Home Premium
- Windows 8 Professional
- Windows 8 Professional Plus
- Windows 8 Enterprise
- Windows 8 Enterprise Eval
- Windows 8 Ultimate
- Windows 8 ARM edition
We will of course point out that this is from the Consumer Preview, so not necessarily a final tally, and the Enterprise Eval version is of course just for trials, but it's interesting to note the addition of Professional Plus. Office 2010 Pro Plus adds in extra integration with Sharepoint and Office Communications Server, leaving us to wonder if this flavor of Windows 8 won't offer some similar collaborative tools. And then there's just that one, lonely ARM edition, which could leave non-x86 hardware buyers out of the cross-shopping fun altogether.
Update: As Jack Schofield points out, you couldn't actually choose from all those Windows 7 SKUs, there were only three boxed products available in the US. It remains to be seen how many of these Windows 8 variants will appear at retail here.

Belgian wireless outfit Option has produced a 4G modem that takes up the same space inside a netbook or tablet as the company's previous 3G-enabled model. The GTM801 is based around Qualcomm's universal-standardGobiMDM9215and, even better, is already designed to supportWindows 8 -- so we can at least hope that the first or second wave of tablets for Microsoft's new OS will be able to access 4G natively, for when we need to workFacebook on the go. Given that all of Option's tech is Gobi-based, you'll also have backwards compatibility with pretty much every standard ever invented, which is good if you don't live in the middle of an LTE zone.

EA BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic is off to a good start, "with more than 1.7 million active subscribers and growing," according to CEO John Riccitiello. While player churn is always a concern in MMOs, DFC Intelligence does see long-term success for the title.
In a report obtained by GamesIndustry International, the market research firm noted that The Old Republic "has the potential to be a successful long-term online subscription PC game... despite a general decline in high-end subscription game products and growing competition from numerous free-to-play games like Riot Games' League of Legends, War Gaming's World of Tanks, and S2 Games' Heroes of New Earth."
DFC, which conducted the study in conjunction with Xfire, tracked game usage data from the launch of the MMO on December 20, 2011 through February 20, 2012 and also surveyed over 4,000 Xfire users in January 2012. Based on this data, DFC believes that Star Wars can indeed reach over one million long-term paying subscribers (defined as a subscriber that pays for over six months).
"The current trend among large massively multiplayer online games is to have strong initial sales, after which users quickly lose interest and are not converted to long-term paying subscribers," said DFC Intelligence analyst Jeremy Miller. "While early signs are fairly positive, over the next few months the plan is to closely monitor usage and consumer reaction to gauge how well Star Wars: The Old Republic performs over time."
Miller added, "The next three to six months will be critical to determine if the game can attract a large and sustained paying subscriber base."
DFC said that this study is part of an "ongoing initiative" with Xfire to better understand the core PC gaming market.
"The Xfire user-base is a strong trend indicator for gaming titles like Star Wars: The Old Republic and World of Warcraft," said Xfire Chief Marketing Officer, Juston Brommel, "One of the core product features that attract gamers to Xfire is the ability for users to track their game hours. This data gives Xfire and DFC terabits of insightful trends into which games users are playing and how often."

Ailing UK retailer Game Group has penned a deal with cloud gaming service Gaikai.
The deal will see Game offer playable demos on its online store, and brings the company in-line with other retailers such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy.
"We are extremely pleased to be working with Game across Europe to help them expand their digital presence and engagement with online consumers by streaming Gaikai's portfolio of high quality content," said Gaikai executive vice president Robert Stevenson.
"As gamers continue to increase their digital consumption of the industry's best games, Game will be well positioned to lead the way."
The deal should prove a boost for the company which has been struggling in recent months. Game announced earlier this week that it would not be stocking some EA titles due to a credit dispute, leading its share price to fall by 15 per cent. The loss of Game's credit insurance also left it unable to stock a number of other major titles.
"Gaikai's ground-breaking game streaming technology fits in well with our strategy of delivering the very best range of games and gaming products to our customers," said Game CEO Ian Shepherd.

After reading about last year's hoax report 'Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and Browser Usage' I realized I was in fact already running a real live experiment measuring number skills: a site were you can solve Calcudoku number puzzles. I analyzed two years' worth of data, consisting of over 1 million solved puzzles. This included puzzles solved 'against the clock,' of three different sizes. For each size, Chrome users were the fastest solvers, Firefox users came second, and IE users were the slowest. The number of abandoned puzzles (started but never finished) was also significantly higher for IE users. Analysis shows that the differences are statistically significant: in other words, they did not happen by chance. I put up more details and some graphs, and also wrote a paper about it(PDF).

A mistaken website update from PC builder HP has potentially shed some light on Microsoft's simplified SKUs for Windows 8.
Documentation for driver downloads on HP's web site appeared to list the upcoming versions of Windows 8 including: Windows 8, Windows 8 Professional and Windows 8 Enterprise. Each available in 32-bit or 64-bit versions.
If that list turns out to be accurate (and HP rather hurriedly took down the pages) then it represents a trimming down of the Windows 7 SKUs with the removal of the Home and Starter SKUs.
HP's web site didn't detail an ARM version, presumably because it's not relevant for driver downloads and Microsoft have stated that the so-called Windows for ARM will not be a retail product as such and will only ship with partner hardware.
Of course this doesn't mean that Microsoft will necessarily have backtracked on offering a variety of additional features for the OS. One possibility is that 'Professional' SKU features, for example, could be bought via the new Windows Store.
Note: We know this isn't the Windows 8 logo but the official one is too boring for our web site. Sorry.

With large numbers of interested parties looking to test drive the new Windows 8 Consumer Preview, Techspot has provided a guide for one of the easiest ways to test out Microsoft's new OS - running Windows 8 in a virtual machine.
While a spare PC might be thin on the ground and dual booting sounds more hassle than it's worth, most modern PCs will support virtual machines given enough memory and hard drive space.
TechSpot posted a simple guide to getting Windows 8 up and running on Oracle's free VirtualBox VM software. A machine with 4GB of RAM and a spare 20GB of hard drive and any modern processor compatible with virtualisation is all that's required, oh and a copy of the Windows 8 Consumer Preview ISO of course.
It's pretty easy going and the guide is barely needed but for those unfamiliar with installing an OS on a virtual PC, Techspot's guide steps through the process clearly. We found Windows 8 took about 15 minutes to install on a fairly beefy PC - slower PCs will obviously take longer.
Check out the Techspot Windows 8 VM guide here.

Windows 8 isn't even really available yet, but you can already play Pinball FX2on it. That's what we would call being "on the ball" ... if we were interested in terrible puns, which of course we aren't.
Windows 8 is available today in a consumer preview build, and Zen Studios' pinball game is included in the download, with the "Sorcerer's Lair" table. Of course, more tables will be sold as DLC. It's only fitting that this version of Windows, which touts some kind of Xbox Live functionality, will include one of Xbox Live's most popular games. To put it another way: free pinball!

Dev giant steps away from Facebook with independent Zynga.com platform
The mutually beneficial relationship between Facebook and Zynga could soon become more complicated, with the Farmville creator ready to launch an eye-catching games portal that exists outside of the social network.
Zynga.com, which will launch in beta this month, will host a range of popular Zynga games as well as new content provided by external development studios.
The site will be available across the globe in fifteen different languages.
Social game developers will have the chance to publish their work through Zynga.com, effectively turning the San Franciscan games company into a third-party publisher.
Mobscience and Row Sham Bow are two of the first external studios that will have their games published in Zynga.com
