Yeah, an optical drive. You know, for folks who still appreciate the passing fads of life. Bitterness aside, Commodore is following up its retro-fabulous C64x with a new small-form-factor PC, the Amiga Mini. While not much of a looker, this box houses a potent 3.5GHz Core i7-2700k CPU, 16GB of DDR3 memory, NVIDIA's GeForce GT 430 (1GB), a WiFi radio and a 1TB HDD that can be swapped out for a 300GB or 600GB solid state drive. There's a slot-loading Blu-ray drive by default, internal space for a pair of 2.5-inch drives and a predictable Amiga logo burned right onto the front panel. Unfortunately, the well-specced base model tips the pricing scales at $2,495, but that does include a copy of its Commodore OS Vision. The company's also revealing the C64x Supreme, the new VIC mini and a more powerful VIC-Slim keyboard computer (which now includes an HDMI output), all detailed in the presser past the break.

Recently I found myself struggling with a question I should easily have been able to answer: Why would anyone want to use Linux as their everyday desktop (or laptop) operating system? It's a fair question, and asked often of Linux, but I'm finding it to be a question I can no longer answer with the conviction necessary to 'sell' the platform. In fact, I kind of feel like a car salesman who realizes he no longer believes in the product he's been pitching. It's not that I don't find Linux worthy; I simply don't understand how it's ever going to succeed on the desktop with voluntary marketing efforts. What do Linux users need to do to replicate the marketing efforts of Apple and Microsoft and other corporate operating system vendors? To me, it seems you don't sell Linux at all because there isn't supposed to be one dominant distribution that stands out from the rest. Without a specific product to put on the shelf to sell, what in the world do you focus your efforts on selling? An idea?

As a nexus of both computer programmers and other creative builder and maker types, SXSW (and Austin generally) is a great place to witness the overlap. John Zitterkopf and his pal Red, while helping to run the giant (and charitable!) LANFest at this year's event, had on hand for display a few of their own modded computer cases. John and Red are both part of Austin Modders, which helps Austinites swap tools and ideas (in-person, and via forums) for creating the kind of enclosures that computer makers simply can't — they're too time-intensive and too personalized for that. It's especially fun to see the effects that the newly widespread availability of laser cutters makes possible. (C'mon, O'Reilly, isn't it time for anotherAustin Maker Faire?)

That's TV that incorporates web services, apps and on-screen extras.
NPD In-Stat reckons 'the Internet is coming back to TV', and that savvy software engineers and smart TV producers are finding ways to create new "hybrid" services that bring it all together.
“The next step in the viewing experience will be for TV sets and set top boxes to permit all of the traditional TV-related services, which is then expanded and enhanced by bringing in content from the Internet, or from Internet-like web services that provide a ‘walled garden’ of authorised content and on-screen features,” said Gerry Kaufhold, NPD's research director.
“In tandem with web-based content coming to TV screens are TV apps that use tablets or smartphones. We expect nearly 80 million households will be actively using TV apps provided by their service provider by 2016. These new hybrid approaches provide an excellent growth opportunity for TV producers.”

[Quinn Dunki's] homebrew computer project is moving up another evolutionary rung. She needs a more versatile user interface and this starts with the data output. Up to this point a set of 7-segment digits has served as a way to display register values. But her current work is aimed at adding VGA output to the system.
She starts off her write up by justifying the protocol choice. Although composite video would be easier to get up and running (we see it in a lot of AVR projects) [Quinn] doesn’t have a screen that will display composite video. But there’s also a lot of info out there about VGA signal generation. She delved into the specifics and even found a great AVR-based example over at Lucid Science.
The version seen above uses the 40-pin ATmega324. It’s a lot bigger than necessary for the example she put together, but in the future she plans to add video memory and will be glad to have all of those extra I/O pins. When it comes to video sync, timing is everything. She wrote the code to drive the display using assembly. In this way, she was able to look up the cycles used for each command to ensure that the loop is running with near perfect timing.

Blizzard acknowledges the impact of Star Wars and notes that there are still no plans to go freemium

The king of the castle in MMOs has acknowledged that EA's ambitious Star Wars: The Old Republic has made a dent in subscribers to World of Warcraft. Blizzard's latest numbers put subscribers at 10.3 million in November 2011, well under the peak of 12 million set in late 2010.
Speaking with our sister site, Eurogamer, World of Warcraft senior producer John Lagrave acknowledged that several factors are contributing to a declining player base that has been strong for just under eight years now.
"We certainly do look at [where WOW players go], and we have a very smart bunch of guys who do our analytics for us," said Lagrave.
"Of course people are trying Star Wars - our development teams are trying Star Wars! I'm one of the few people who are still playing it actually, but yeah we've seen a dip in subs. It certainly has to at least be attributable to The Old Republic, but it's also attributable to people who want to wait and get Mists of Pandaria, so it's not surprising," he continued.
"Are they going elsewhere? Yes they are. We don't have a lock on all the best games in the world - Skyrim was an amazing game."
Regardless of how affected the subscribers are, the team remains confident that new opportunities will keep the game fresh. Blizzard recently introduced a free trial for the game, allowing players to have their first 20 levels on the house. There even seems to be an indication that the 20-level cap could be moving.
"But we can absolutely say, 'Hey, why don't we make it level 40?' 'Why don't we make it level 60?', do we let you at least experience the old world? It's all possible," Lagrave noted. "Right now, no, but that's all absolutely on the table."
However, there is no real indication that WoW will make the move that many other MMOs around the world have been making, to the freemium space. The franchise has proven to be a strong one, giving no real reason to indicate that a free-to-play model would have any benefit over the current subscription-based payment method.
"Right now we're very happy with the subscription system with World of Warcraft," Lagrave stressed. "We think it works very well."
"Mike [Morhaime] talks about the value we give you for that price-point, and that's a fairly legitimate statement. Certainly a very cheap form of entertainment. So yeah, we're comfortable with the subscription system. I won't say never on that, but gosh not now and it's been seven years! You'd think we'd have gotten there before now, so I don't think so."

Blizzard Entertainment says it is "really happy" with the monthly subscription model despite falling numbers of World Of Warcraftsubscribers amid the meteoric rise of free-to-play.
Speaking to our friends at PC Gamer, WOW producer John Lagrave insisted that Blizzard had no intention of switching its flagship MMOG to the freemium model, under which games are free-to-play and revenue comes from sales of virtual goods.
"We're very happy with the sub model," he said. "It works well for us for various reasons. You churn through a lot of content very quickly on a paid-for game, and we think we offer great value in all the content we have for the player.
"If we went [free-to-play], do you make a ton more money? Maybe. Do you burn out players? Probably. I'm not saying we're never going free-to-play - we do that with the trial right now - but we're really happy with the subscription model. We're doing really well."
The facts, however, rather contradict Lagrave's sentiment. WOWhas shed two million subscribers in the space of a year, while a slew of rival MMOGs have switched to free-to-play and reaped the rewards.
Blizzard acknowledged last year that it needed to do more to retain players. The release of the Cataclysm expansion saw subscriber numbers increase as lapsed players returned, but after blitzing through the new content on offer they left in droves.
The company has since said it is working to reduce development times in a bid to ensure a steady flow of new content. The fourth WOW expansion, Mists Of Pandaria, is due this year, and Blizzard has released four trailers showcasing its new features.

Users have embraced premium tablet gaming for the device's ability to offer a large screen experience – something that is of high importance to users – and strong visuals with clear graphics.
Indeed, Juniper reckons the impact of the new form factor is such that tablet games are expected to account for more than one-third of all mobile gaming revenues by 2016.
One reason for this is the rapid improvement of the devices themselves, with Apple recently showcasing the HD gaming found on its new iPad, something other vendors will likely try to replicate.
Additionally, Juniper says premium tablet games offer more detailed play with console-style buttons for players to use, which aren't feasible for the small screened smartphone versions.
Charlotte Miller, report author, says: "The tablet is the perfect device for playing mobile games – the screens are large enough for the user to see the action, no matter how big their hands are.

Wargaming.net is going through quite a growth spurt, and the company's CEO says it's not just about registered user numbers boosted by freeloading players. "We probably have one of the highest payment ratios in the industry, it's around 25 to 30 percent," Victor Kislyi recently told GamesIndustry.biz.Kislyi also offered up some impressive concurrent user numbers for World of Tanks, including 423,000 simultaneous Russian tankers that he said outstrips the entirety of EVE Online's playerbase. As for the "pay-to-win" rhetoric often found in World of Tanks internet discussions, Kislyi says it is what it is. "For casual gameplay, which most players do most of the time, people don't usually use gold or expendables. Of course if you want to win a tournament, if you're competitive, if you play clan wars, if you want to be at the top, we think it's appropriate to expect a little bit of money from you because you already spent hundreds of hours in our game and that's much more than the value of any $50 box."http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/19/world-of-tanks-has-20-million-registered-users-making-double-di/

We knew good and well that Microsoft was aiming for a 2012 launch of its latest and greatest operating system, and if sources reporting to Bloomberg are accurate, it looks like we'll have a date with Mrs. October. Purportedly, work will wrap on Win8 this summer, with PCs and tablets (!) to ship in October carrying the newfangled OS. We're told that the initial rollout will include devices running Intel andARM processors, and not surprisingly, this positions Microsoft to make a serious play for holiday dollars. Still wondering if it's for you? Give the Consumer Preview a run, won'tcha?

"We've been speaking to Blizzard from day one. They are without doubt the kind of company we can help"
[h=3]Gaikai Inc.[/h]
Gaikai's David Perry believes that his game-streaming service can help bring down the high user acquisition costs associated with massively multiplayer online games.
Speaking to GamesIndustry International, Perry said online ads for games such as Blizzard's World of Warcraft are expensive and create too much friction - when ads could be replaced with links to stream a demo of a game directly in the user's browser.
"We believe we can really help get the cost of players down in terms of bringing more people in at a lower cost than publishers pay today," said Perry. "That's one of the reasons we made Gaikai in the first place. I was in the MMO space and thinking 'goodness we have to help solve this' because it's so expensive to get players to come and try your games."
You'll see us doing more and more MMOs, it's a very important part of this puzzle.
David Perry, Gaikai
"We have our favourites that we've been going after," he added. "We've been speaking to Blizzard from day one of the company. They are without doubt the kind of company that we can help because they run Google ads all over the internet to try to drive traffic into their game. And our position is, instead of doing that, why not put the game there, wherever it is, and that person can play the game.
"You're not moving the person and you're not having to pay to move the person around anymore, it's right in front of them. Each MMO company, when they think through their funnel and acquisition costs it just makes sense. "
Gaikai announced a couple of weeks ago that it has struck a deal to stream demos of Dungeons & Dragons Online and The Lord of the Rings Online, part of an early move into the MMO space for the cloud gaming company.
In press demonstrations the Gaikai team has often used World of Warcraft to demonstrate the service, most notably streaming the fan-favourite to iPad and on social networking site Facebook.
MMOs have been on the agenda for a long time, revealed Perry, but various obstacles have held up bringing online RPGs to the cloud.
"It's taken longer than we thought because of discussions on how to handle patching and all that kind of stuff but we're finally out now.
"You'll see us doing more and more MMOs, it's a very important part of this puzzle. Those games are some of the biggest titles there are, I don't know if you're ever going to download such a big game onto your iPad. There's a problem there. This bridges the gap."

Epic vice president Mark Rein thinks developers looking at engines for next-generation console launch titles would be best served by sticking to Unreal Engine 3.
In an interview with CVG, Rein said that UE3 can power visuals like those seen in the famed 'Samaritan' demo 'right now', but only on high-end PCs.
"In fact, Unreal Development Kit has all the features that powered Samaritan - every single graphics feature you can do. We could have shown another 30 videos," said Rein.
"We have guys doing stuff on high end PCs that are just outside of the gaming space that are really pushing the envelope there. So that to us is pretty exciting - and you can do that now."
Unreal Engine 4 was shown at GDC to select industry partners, and is expected to get a public unveiling later this year.
“The UE4 stuff is very futuristic. UE3 is really the horse for this year.”

Lenovo could be the first company to launch a Windows 8 tablet with the tablet prepared for release by October according to a source cited by The Verge.
A number of firms have been put in the frame for building Windows 8 'slates', including Asus, HP and even mobile giant Nokia. However Chinese manufacturer Lenovo appears to believe they'll be first to the market.
No specifications are available but it's very likely the tablet will be based on Intel's latest Ivy Bridge mobile processor. Some hints might be taken from devices that Lenovo showed off at CES.
Once such Windows 8 device Lenovo showed off at the January show included a 13.3-inch hybrid ultrabook with a touch screen called the IdeaPad Yoga 13 (pictured). The firm said the Yoga 13 was slated for arrival when Windows 8 launches.
Of course an actual Windows 8 slate would probably be smaller than that unless the smartphone supersize disease is coming to tablets too.
The Lenovo tablet would be, we take from the report, based on the x86 version of Windows 8 and not the so-called Windows on Arm variant.

Exec claims the tablet market is still wide open.
Dell's attempt to tackle the tablet market with its Android-powered Streak range resulted in poor sales and the discontinuation of the devices.
Now, the firm assures Reuters it can bounce back and battle the iPad with a new line of Windows tablets, as Dell's chief commercial officer Steve Felice claims the tablet market is still wide open.
However, "wide open" seems to be an overstatement as Apple sold 15.4 million iPads in Q4, almost four times the number of nearest rival Amazon's Kindle Fire, which bagged four million.
During the interview, Felice, says: "We're very encouraged by the touch capability we are seeing in the beta versions of Windows 8. We have a roadmap for tablets that we haven't announced yet. You'll see some announcements for the back half of the year."
The exec assures that Android isn't out of the question, while "the back half of the year" could be an attempt to capitalise on the usual sales spike ahead of Christmas.

RIM hints that new OS will hit the tablet late this year.
This is hardly earth shattering news: BlackBerry 10 OS is based on the same QNX platform that already powers the current Playbook OS.
But now TechRadar has coaxed the following comment from Rob Orr, RIM's VP of product management.
"We've said publicly a number of times that our first BB10 handset will be available towards the end of 2012, and that's still firmly the case.
"At some point after the launch we'll bring BB10 to our PlayBooks, yes."
Hardly the most concrete of statements, but it will buoy those who believe the PlayBook is a fine device that's been dragged down unfairly by a poor reputation.

Terry Cavanagh, indie-game maniac behind VVVVVV, Chat Chat and At a Distance, has started a new website with a title to make an SOE enthusiast blush: Free Indie Games. Guess what it offers? Free indie games, as chosen by Cavanagh based on their newness, goodness, freeness, indieness and gameness.
Currently, Free Indie Games "highly recommends" Wither, Game Title: Lost Levels and Dys4ia, but recent titles we find intriguing include Nausea andSocially Awkward Conversationalist. But they're all free, so really, every single one is quite intriguing to begin with.
