It may have been on a steady decline for years (albeit still the number one web browser all along), but it looks like Internet Explorer has now once again found itself on a bit of an upswing. According to the latest numbers from Net Applications, IE (all versions included) gained a full percentage point in the past month (following a similar gain in January) to sit at a market share of 53.83 percent, its highest level since September of 2011. That growth came largely at the expense of Firefox and Chrome, which each dropped less than a percentage point to 20.55 and 18.57 percent, respectively (Safari and Opera also saw slight declines). As others have noted, Net Applications did recently tweak its method for measuring browser usage, although it's not clear if that alone accounts for the shift in IE's favor -- perhaps the new ad campaign is working? You can find the full breakdown at the source link below.

Dmitry Grinberg has successfully booted Ubuntu 9.04 on an 8 bit micro machine with 6.5 KHz CPU and 16 MB RAM. Grinberg didthis experiment on a ATmega1284p, 8-bit RISC microcontroller clocked at 24MHz and equipped with 16KB of SRAM and 128KB of flash storage. Since the RAM was too low, he added 30-pin 16MB SIMM to the machine and a 1 GB SD card to host Ubuntu image. ... To get the world's slowest Linux Computer running, he had to write an ARMv5 emulator which supports a 32bit processor and MMU. A similar machine can be made very easily and everything should come in about $20."There is source code available, but it's under a non-commercial use only license. Just how slow is it? "It takes about 2 hours to boot to bash prompt ('init=/bin/bash' kernel command line). Then 4 more hours to boot up the entire Ubuntu ('exec init' and then login). Starting X takes a lot longer. The effective emulated CPU speed is about 6.5KHz, which is on par with what you'd expect emulating a 32-bit CPU & MMU on a measly 8-bit micro. Curiously enough, once booted, the system is somewhat usable. You can type a command and get a reply within a minute." If you like watching a whole lot of nothing, there's a video of the boot process below the fold.

55m Americans poised to own a tablet by the end of 2012.
Online shopping assistant Milo has observed the fast adoption rate of tablets in the US to find almost 90 million Americans will own a tablet by the end of 2014, rising from 55 million expected at the end of this year.
The infographic cites growing tablet use means an increase in online shopping from an entirely new platform, which retailers can use to their advantage if they acknowledge the tablet shopper appropriately.
A perfect example demonstrated is tablet users spending one-fifth more on shopping than desktop or laptop users.

Cedric is one of the most famous characters in Sierra history. However, he has divided the fanbase into those who find him slightly irksome and those that adore him. We have therefore come up with a modification for ScummVM that optionally removes Cedric from King's Quest V.
In addition to being able to remove Cedric from King's Quest V, we have also worked on a mode for all other ScummVM games to insert Cedric into them. Cedric integrates directly into those games and can interact with the game as well as the player. A set of screenshots of this mode (and of King's Quest V) can be found at the end of this news post.
Some of the other developers have also chimed in with their opinion on the subject. ScummVM PR officer Strangerke said, "ScummVM has always been about improving the quality of these games and now we finally have the opportunity to bring one of Sierra's most beloved characters to all the other games we support." "It really adds to these Coktel Vision games," stated ScummVM Gob developer DrMcCoy, "they're actually playable now." "I can't imagine playing these games any other way now; there's no going back," added clone2727.

Tropico 4: Modern Times, whose PC launch was officially announced for next week, clearly shows El Presidente is a man of technologication and has learned to export through digital distribution. The Modern Times expansion is available now through Steam and Amazon for $20.
The boxed retail version of Modern Times will still be available next week. The shipments are currently en route within large storage containers with air holes. El Presidente didn't want to keep filling Tropican prisons with rebels... so he found a new export. Oh, that El Presidente, he's a clever one!

Creative Assembly's Mike Simpson says the popular Total War series of strategy games wouldn't work on the current console generation, just in terms of hardware requirements. "They don't have enough memory, by a large factor," Simpson tells Eurogamer. The audience for console games tends to be a little more action-oriented and a little less strategy focused, and the experiences are very different as well, he asserts. But there's hope yet, "for all sorts of reasons."
The user interface is another issue, according to Simpson, but it's fixable through solid game design. While he doesn't mention the Total War versioncoming to iOS, that's definitely a clear indicator that the game can work on platforms other than PC. And Simpson says that despite the differences, Creative Assembly has some "very clever ideas" on adapting its popular strategy games for the next wave of consoles and the pick-up-and-play style that go along with them.

Above is the first proper look at the prototype, "probably going to change a lot" vision of Super Meat Boy on iOS. No, this isn't an April Fools' joke, unless Team Meat have decided to reveal sensible, already-announced information as part of its months-long ruse to get everyone excited for mobile SMB before stripping it away entirely -- a plan they decided to ditch once they realized what a genuinely good idea that is. However, we really don't think that's the case here.
In February Team Meat's Edmund McMillen divulged the first details of SMB on iOS, saying that if the idea was good enough, they would create it as an entirely new game without the "shitty touch controls" standard in most mobile touchscreen titles. Looks like the idea was good enough.
Mobile SMB is "a feature-length touch-controlled platformer SPECIFICALLY designed for Touch devices," McMillen wrote today, continuing to say it isn't "a shitty port of an existing game with non-tactile buttons spread all over the screen blocking the player's view and making for frustrating controls" or "theSuper Meat Boy you're used to: There are aspects of Super Meat Boy in there, obviously, but this is a brand new game with new art, new sound, everything."

Notch posted the official page of Mars Effect today, saying through Twitter, 'it's a completely different game! Our takes place in space, and focuses on characters, and lets you land on planets!!' He gives more detailed on the new website, noting the game will be based around hard science fiction (think Star Trek sci-fi) and puts characters in control of a character rather than just a ship. Similar to Minecraft, it will be a free-roaming game, but with a full economic system, different planets, customizable ships, space battles against AI, and other features. There will also be an in-game, 16-bit computer. Notch also took the chance to poke fun at Mass Effect, noting it will have 'A game ending that makes sense.'

Developers divided on impact of new 'premium' royalty charges
Adobe’s decision to begin taking royalties from certain games made in Flash “will only affect the Zyngas and Rovios of this world”, an indie developer familiar with the tech has said.
Many developers have complained that Adobe’s new tactic – to implement new royalty charges to Flash games – will have too negative an impact on revenues.
From August, Adobe will take a 9 per cent sales cut from developers working with Flash, providing they use the combination of two new “premium feature” APIs and pass certain sales thresholds.
Developers will be charged only if they employ hardware accelerated rendering in combination with domain memory, and only when they begin to make more than $50,000 per game.
Mark Burvill, of Flash studio Antifuzz, told GamesIndustry International that the new payment model is “only going to affect the Zyngas and Rovios of this world who go on to develop the next generation of console-quality games for the web."

Microsoft has shed some light on how Windows 8 will handle older lower spec touch screen hardware, promising that new Windows 8 PCs will offer the best touch screen experience.
In a new post on Microsoft's Building Windows 8 Blog, the software giant emphasised that Windows 8 will work on current touch hardware but cautioned that Microsoft's touch hardware specifications for Windows 8 were considerably higher than the average touch screen hardware.
One example is that new Windows 8 PCs require touch digitisers that are capable of recording five simultaneous touch events although the 'fundamental' gestures just required two. Microsoft said that the 5 finger requirement was implemented due to developer requests not to limit the range of possible gestures used in future touch user interfaces.
The blog post went on to manage expectations of the current consumer preview with existing touch screen hardware by pointing out that limitations such as jitter and lack of consistent sensitivity. Microsoft described the engineering efforts to minimise these drawbacks but there's only so far they could go.
Among the touch events that could be problematic on older touch digitisers are individual taps, swipe to select, swipe and slide and swipe from edge - many of which hampered by slow response rates of touch hardware.
Earlier Microsoft research had released a video showing how faster touch hardware would significantly enhance touch interfaces, suggesting that response rate is something Microsoft is particularly concerned about.
The latest Building Windows 8 blog post strikes a different tone from former posts that described upcoming new features, this time striking something of a defensive tone - likely aimed at patchy critical reviews of Microsoft's new Metro interface coupled with touch hardware.
The firm even helpfully suggested a list of PCs which had suitable performance touch hardware such as the HP Elitebook 2760p convertible and the Asus EP121 tablet.
The unwritten implication seems to be that tech pundits should look to these devices to evaluate how Microsoft is getting on in the all-important transition to touch.

Report claims the giant plans to sell its own products directly to consumers.
Google is set to launch an online tablet store, which would give it direct access to consumers, according to WSJ.
The firm will reportedly sell Samsung and Asus tablets, the latter of which was recently reported to become Google's next flagship tablet provider, following the path of Samsung, HTC and Motorola.
Google sold its Nexus One phone – or at least tried to – directly to consumers in 2010, but the store was written off as a failure after less than half a year.
Presumably, Google is planning the move in an attempt to up the ante against the frontrunner Apple, which has seen massive sales of its iPad. An example of this was the new iPad selling three million in three days.
Android is due to take over from iPad in terms of tablet shipments in the next few years as consumers move away from premium devices and it seems Google is planning to speed up the power exchange.

Ubisoft has advised anyone hoping to play Assassin's Creed 3 on PC to invest in a control pad.Speaking in an interview with Game Spy, Ubisoft Montreal's creative director Alex Hutchinson explained that he believes the game works best that way and that the studio won't be putting too much effort into optimising the sequel for keyboard-based play."We're definitely supporting PC, we love PC, but I think it'll be PC with a controller," he said."I don't see us investing hugely in a mouse and keyboard setup. I think if you want to play on PC and you want to play Assassin's Creed, you have a controller."The American Revolution-set sequel is due out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 from 31st October, with the PC release expected to follow some time after that. For more on the game, see our recent Assassin's Creed 3 preview.

The big one-eight. Another few months and another version of the Google browser is now up for grabs. With GPU-accelerated Canvas 2D now enabled, you can expect to see even smoother interactions with games and other media-heavy content. WebGL also gets a look-in with a new software-based addition that should help older computers access simple 3D web content. Anyone that's already furnished with Chrome should get auto-updated to the latest version today, while anyone now left with no excuses notto sample the web browser can hit up the download at the source.

Being able to touch, click and press your way around an operating system with a variety of hardware configurations, while not alienating potential upgraders, is no mean feat. That said, Microsoft thinks it might have the solution. By introducing a new mode, a 20 pixel buffer will be designated to working with those edge swipes we've heardabout. It'll also go towards preventing accidental hits around the, typically less sensitive, edges of older screens. It does mean that you'll be losing a little real estate, but perhaps a small trade-off for being able to keep your Windows 7 touchscreen device. Going forward, Microsoft will be working with hardware providers to ensure new gear really shows off the new features of Win 8, but for now, legacy users can look forward to a better experience. Hit the source below for the full rundown.

The inevitable licensed Euro 2012 title from EA Sports will be a digital-only release, MCV can reveal.
Furthermore, the game will skip a stand-alone release entirely and instead be made available as a DLC expansion for existing title FIFA 12.
Called EA Sports UEFA Euro 2012, the download includes all 53 UEFA member national teams and the eight official stadiums of the tournament.
As well as allowing users to play out the tournament, it will also offer Expedition Mode, which allows for the building and management of a custom national squad.
FIFA Virtual Pro mode will also make a return, as do the real-world themed Challenges and online multiplayer.
With FIFA 12 still selling strong, FIFA Street having fun near the top of the charts and an inevitable release of FIFA 13 at the end of September, EA likely felt that three boxed EA releases in a year is perhaps pushing the franchise and the established retail model too far.
It’s a big blow for the struggling High Street retail sector, as EA’s licensed summer football game has always proved a big hit with gamers.
UEFA Euro 2004 Portugal debuted at No.2 on for week ending May 8th 2004. It climbed to No.1 the following week where it stayed for two weeks and remained in Top Five until July 17th.
Two years later FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 entered the charts No.1, where it stayed for a month. After a brief fall it reclaimed the top spot in early June where it again reigned for a fortnight.
UEFA Euro 2008 Austria-Switzerland was a less successful outing, debuting at No.8 in the week ending April 19th 2008 and went on to spend several weeks in the lower reaches of the Top 20.
2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa debuted at No.1 in the first week of May 2010. It remained there for two weeks until it dislodged by Red Dead Redemption, though it stayed in the Top Five until the week ending July 17th.

Mozilla's 'endless parade' of Firefox updates adds no visible benefit to users but breaks common functions, as numerous add-ons, including the popular open source TinyMCE editor, continually suffer compatibility issues, thanks to Firefox's newly adopted auto-update cycle, writes InfoWorld's Galen Gruman. 'Firefox is a Web browser, and by its very nature the Web is a heterogeneous, uncontrolled collection of resources. Expecting every website that uses TinyMCE to update it whenever an incremental rev comes out is silly and unrealistic, and certainly not just because Mozilla decided compatibility in its parade of new Firefox releases was everyone else's problem. The Web must handle such variablility — especially the browsers used to access it.'

The last game EA Maxis launched in the SimCity series was SimCity 4, almost ten years ago. It's still being played today, thanks in part to a Steam launch in 2010, but mostly thanks to the modding scene. However, EA Maxis will not launch the new SimCity in 2013 with mod support.
It's not entirely off the table, though. EA Maxis creative director Ocean Quigley said the ability to support mods is already built into GlassBox, the new engine powering SimCity, so there's potential for mod support down the road -- just not at launch.
"Right now we've got our work cut out for us to build the product up to the quality level it deserves as a SimCity," Quigley said. "Then after we ship, we'll make decisions about how we can and when exactly we'll support mods. But it's worth pointing out that the reason people are still playing SimCity 4 almost ten years later is because the modding community essentially re-created it and filled it with new content and fixed bugs and made it as much of a hobby as it is a game.
"We're very cognizant of that -- we're not idiots."

One of the most interesting aspects of the new SimCity is the way pollution and the environment play into the new multiplayer features. The latest installment of the franchise is being prepared for next year, so there's no playable version yet for me to see the mechanic in action. In the meantime, EA Maxis was willing to play out some scenarios during a visit to the Emeryville, CA, offices last week.
Once a new game is started, players can create a region and invite friends to add their own cities. Each city has the potential to share with its neighbors. The citizens of one city may travel to the other to enjoy casinos or shopping, for example. Keeping Sims within the city happy keeps the economy flowing.
Connecting cities in this way opens the door to interesting scenarios. One city could be a supplier of coal to other locations, reaping the cash rewards of being a supplier and allowing its neighbors to progress in the game despite limitations. It encourages cooperation, something EA Maxis will support with added bonuses and possible achievements.
