Remedy Entertainment and Nordic Games have snagged Legacy Interactive to distribute the boxed PC version of Alan Wake in North America and will begin shipping the title on April 3. This deal took some careful planning, it appears, as Remedy previously extended the Steam collector's edition launch deal for an extra week while North American fans waited for a physical launch announcement.
Similarly to the Steam version, the boxed PC edition of Alan Wake includes two DLC packs, The Writer and The Signal, and supports stereoscopic 3D and multiple screens.

We got a little worried when ITG missed its January unveiling for the xpPhone 2, but yesterday, this Windows 7-powered smartphone finally made its debut public appearance in Guangzhou, and we happened to be there to scoop up a demo unit. Since we last came across the second-gen xpPhone, its ambitious Chinese manufacturer has dished out more detailed specs: the 17.5mm-thick device comes with a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 LCD made by Sharp, multitouch input, an Intel Atom Z5xx series processor up to 2GHz, up to 2GB of RAM, up to 112GB of SSD made by Silicon Storage Technology, microSD expansion and a multipurpose HDMI Micro socket (not HDMI Mini as we mistakenly said in our video after the break) that takes care of video, audio, data (USB 2.0) and power. Read on to find out what we think of this weird creature.

Metro, Microsoft's new UI, is bold; a dramatic departure from anything the company has previously done in the desktop/laptop space, and absolutely great. It's tangible proof that Redmond really can design and build its own unique products and experiences. However, the transition to Metro's Start menu is jarring for some desktop users, and worse yet, Desktop mode and Metro don't mesh well at all. The best strategy Microsoft could take would be to introduce users to Metro via its included apps and through tablets, while prominently offering the option to maintain the Desktop environment. Power users who choose to use the classic UI for desktops and laptops can still be exposed to Metro via tablets and applications without being forced to wade through it on their way to do something important.

Harry Shum, who oversees research and development for Microsoft's Bing search engine, believes his company has now matched Google's ability to build software platforms that can harness the power of tens of thousands of servers. — 'For many years, we've really tried to play the catch-up game,' Shum says. 'And now we feel that after a lot of effort, we understand search quality problems better than before, and that if you look at Google and Bing, the quality is beginning to be very comparable.' While his comments might be a little biased, many people do share the same opinion. How do you feel about Bing's search results compared to Google's? For example DuckDuckGo, the privacy oriented search engine, uses Bing's back-end and has gained a small following on Slashdot."

Studio 'a long way off' from shipping any sort of hardware, claims Doug Lombardi
Valve’s Doug Lombardi has refuted suggestions that it is set to move into the console market.
Speaking to Kotaku, the marketing director said that the Half Life developer was a long way from shipping any sort of hardware, and was instead focusing on bringing Steam games to TV.
"We're prepping the Steam Big Picture Mode UI and getting ready to ship that, so we're building boxes to test that on.
"We're also doing a bunch of different experiments with biometric feedback and stuff like that, which we've talked about a fair amount. All of that is stuff that we're working on, but it's a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware."
When asked if this meant Valve would not be making a console in the near future to reveal at GDC or E3, Lombardi responded: “I think that’s accurate”.

Skip XBLA and PSN because you're at Sony or Microsoft's will as to what's on the dashboard'
Indies should skip Xbox Live and PSN and develop games on PC, says Epic Games’ Cliff Bleszinksi.
As reported by Kotaku, the Gears of War creator said that independent developers who created games for online console services were “at Sony or Microsoft’s will as to what’s on the dashboard”.
He added that iOS also faced approval issues, whilst there was too much piracy on Android to make the platform a viable option.
“Xbox Live and PSN, skip both of them because you’re at Sony or Microsoft’s will as to what’s on the dashboard,” said Bleszinksi.
“iOS, maybe but you have to have Apple’s approval, there’s too much piracy on Android, no one has a Windows phone, Kickstarter’s wonderful, go Tim Schafer.

We've had our fill of Ultrabooks and tablets at CeBIT, so now it's finally time to move on to the crazy stuff. This over-the-top case mod was awaiting unsuspecting attendees at the far back end of the China pavilion, of all places, and only caught our eye (or ear, rather) thanks to its squeaky gatling gun. It seems that this case first made an appearance at the Taipei Game Show last month, and has now landed on German shores, making a miraculous pass through EU customs to settle here, hidden amongst a hodgepodge of accessories on the outskirts of Hannover. This Thermaltake Level 10 GT chassis was modded by Brian Carter, and is highlighted by a six-barrel rotating gatling gun. There's a bazooka up top where the handle would be, a .50 caliber cartridge on the side and a combination energy drink / hand sanitizer compartment just below. Yes, hand sanitizer. The rotating (and rather noisy) gatling gun makes our hands-on video a must-watch if you're looking to get the full mod experience, so jump past the break and check it out.

EA has confirmed that BioWare's first MMO is almost at 2 million users
Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello has told investors that BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) is up to nearly 1.7 million monthly subscribers as of the end of February. A "vast majority" of players have passed beyond the free month of playtime that comes with the game and are in full-on paid subscription mode.
Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz is estimating 2 million monthly subscribers by the end of June 2012.
"We continue to feel comfortable with our Star Wars estimates which are an important part of our street-high FY13 non-GAAP EPS estimate of $1.36. We estimate 2MM paying subs by the end of June 2012 (and then sustained for the remainder of the year). We also note that the company plans to launch Star Wars in the Asia-Pacific region later this month," Creutz said in a statement.
Overall, the success of SWTOR has Cowen and Company rating EA shares to Outperform.

We're in a post-PC world, but the PC is still holding on with Windows 8 and ultrabooks on the way
According to a forecast by Gartner, Inc., PC shipments are expected to hit 368 million units in 2012, a 4.4 percent increase over 2011. Gartner expects that number to grow to over 400 million in 2013, despite the continued success of "post-PC" platforms like Apple's iPad.
"PC shipments will remain weak in 2012, as the PC market plays catch up in bringing a new level of innovation that consumers want to see in devices they purchase," said Gartner research director Ranjit Atwal. "The real question is whether Windows 8 and ultrabooks will create the compelling offering that gets the earlier adopter of devices excited about PCs again."
The increasing power in tablets and smartphones has allowed those devices to take the place of a traditional PC for many consumer tasks, including email and social networking.
"PCs will face more competition as we see new media tablets based on operating systems from Android and Microsoft, as well the new iPad," said Atwal. "Consumers will now look at a task that they have to perform, and they will determine which device will allow them to perform such a task in the most effective, fun and convenient way. The device has to meet the user needs not the other way round."
Gartner also expects for PCs to be big sellers in emerging markets.
"Emerging markets are key to driving worldwide PC growth in both the short and long-term, and our expectation is that 2012 and then 2013 onwards will be supported by growth in emerging markets as their share increases from just over 50 percent in 2011 to nearly 70 percent in 2016," said Mr. Atwal. "Emerging markets have very low PC penetration and even with the availability of other devices we still expect a steady uptake of PCs."

Microsoft is talking with the streaming services company to see if it's allowed to stream Windows 7 installations to tablets
Microsoft is in talks with OnLive about whether its newest app for iOS and Android, OnLive Desktop, is a violation of Windows licensing terms. The OnLive Desktop app allows users to access a cloud-hosted Windows 7 installation, with a premium version of the app offering more features. In a post on a Microsoft Technet blog, corporate vice president of worldwide licensing and pricing Joe Matz outlined the company stance on the issue.
"Some inquiries about these scenarios have been raised as a result of recent media coverage related to OnLive's Desktop and Desktop Plus services. Additionally, the analyst firm Gartner raised questions regarding the compliance of these services last week. We are actively engaged with OnLive with the hope of bringing them into a properly licensed scenario, and we are committed to seeing this issue is resolved," wrote Matz.
According to Matz, Microsoft's licensing agreements allow two streaming scenarios:- Customers that want to work with partners to have them host Windows 7 in a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure solution on their behalf, can do so when the customer provides the partner licenses through the customer's own agreements with Microsoft. The hosting hardware must be dedicated to, and for the benefit of the customer, and may not be shared by or with any other customers of that partner.
- Microsoft partners who host under the Services Provider License Agreement ("SPLA") may bring some desktop-like functionality as a service by using Windows Server and Remote Desktop Services. Under this solution, the partner is free to offer this service to any customer they choose, whether or not they have a direct licensing agreement with Microsoft. However, it is important to note that SPLA does not support delivery of Windows 7 as a hosted client or provide the ability to access Office as a service through Windows 7. Office may only be provided as a service if it is hosted on Windows Server and Remote Desktop Services.
In OnLive's case, they hold the Windows 7 licenses, running afoul of scenario one. They also allow access to a normal Windows 7 install with Microsoft Office installed, meaning scenario two doesn't apply either. It remains to be seen is Microsoft and OnLive can come up with an amicable solution to the problem.

Gaikai has announced a deal with Warner Bros that will make two of the publisher's MMOGs playable instantly, streamed from the cloud, in web browsers.
The Lord Of The Rings Online is available to North American players now, with Turbine's Dungeons & Dragons Online to follow soon. Players can launch the full, free-to-play version of both titles from the games' official websites.
Gaikai EVP Robert Stevenson said: "MMOGs have always been one of the key genres we've wanted to deliver via the cloud - never before has it been possible to play MMOGs in this way.
"And we couldn't be more pleased to showcase Gaikai's technology by streaming Dungeons & Dragons Online and The Lord Of The Rings Online, which are both fantastic multiplayer gaming experiences with legions of loyal fans."
Craig Alexander of D&DO developer Turbine added: "Gaikai's game streaming service will make it easier than ever for new players to start their epic adventures in our immersive online worlds.
"Anyone wishing to try these popular MMOGs can now instantly launch the games inside their web browser, completely eliminating any download waiting time."
The deal currently only applies to North America. We've sought confirmation on if and when the games will be made available elsewhere, and will follow up when we hear back.

By reinventing the Start Menu in Windows 8, Microsoft has caused some resistance to the new Start Screen. For those longing for the classic way of doing things, Stardock comes to rescue. The Start8 is a piece of software which replicates the functionality of the button and menu found in previous versions of Windows. Supported is starting applications, the Run and Shutdown features, and search.

In a talk earlier this year at DICE, Epic Games' Tim Sweeney discussed the state of computing hardware as it relates to gaming. While there is a rising sentiment in the gaming world that the current generation consoles are 'good enough' and that the next generation of consoles might be the last, Sweeney thinks that is way off base. He debates the claim with some interesting numbers, including the amount of processing and triangle power required to match human anatomical peaks. While we are only a factor of 50x from the necessary level of triangle processing, there is 2000x increase required to meet the 5000 TFLOPS Sweeney thinks will be needed for the 8000x4000 resolution screens of the future. It would seem that the 'good enough' sentiment is still a long way off for developers

We've frequently discussed the growing trend among video game publishers to adopt a business model in which downloading and playing the game is free, but part of the gameplay is supported by microtransactions. There have been a number of success stories, such as Dungeons & Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online. During a talk at the Game Developers Conference this week, Valve's Joe Ludwig officially added Team Fortress 2 to that list, revealing that the game has seen a 12-fold increase in revenue since the switch. He said, 'The trouble is, when you're a AAA box game, the only people who can earn you new revenue are the people who haven't bought your game. This drives you to build new content to attract new people. There's a fundamental tension between building the game to satisfy existing players and attract new players.' He also explained how they tried to do right by their existing playerbase: 'We dealt with the pay-to-win concern in a few ways. The first was to make items involve tradeoffs, so there's no clear winner between two items. But by far the biggest thing we did to change this perception was to make all the items that change the game free. You can get them from item drops, or from the crafting system. It might be a little easier to buy them in the store, but you can get them without paying.
