EA will announce Sim City 5 at the Game Developers Conference next week, according to a German mag Gamestar.
The rumour has been picked up by forum surfers over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun and is backed up by a tease from earlier this month, when EA PR boss Erik Reynold tweeted: "MORE INFO! EA Maxis GDC announcement, huge event w/ special guests".A subsequent Facebook message made stronger hints that announcement would be SimCity related: "How can we change the world together? Find out when EA hosts the Game Changers event at GDC. What would you do if you had the power to change the world?"
Sim City 5 is looking like a sure bet at this point. Either way, we'll find out for sure on March 6 when EA live streams its GDC event.

Last time we saw End of Nations, Trion's massively multiplayer real-time strategy followup to its popular Rift, the core gameplay hearkened back to developer Petroglyph's old home of Westwood Studios and its Command & Conquer games. Yes, this is an RTS game focused more on map control and exploration than base-building, but the goal was still to move a group of units around a top-down map, something that RTS players know plenty about.
Now, however, Trion is much farther along in the game's development, so much so that it's readying for a closed beta in just a few weeks. And as Game Director Dave Luehmann unveils a much more polished build of his company's upcoming free-to-play strategy title, another interesting influence emerges: Riot Games' League of Legends.

Microsoft's Flight Simulator has long prodded gamers to splash out on hardware upgrades and insane joysticks. Like Madonna, it's reinvented itself for the 21st century as a single-named free-to-play game for those who want to zoom around the skies of Hawaii. The company will make its money by selling premium add-ons including new aircraft and "adventure packs." The game is now ready for download (at the source link) and, if it proves popular, Redmond should expect a nice gift basket from AMD andNVIDIA this Christmas.

We don't have 100 fingers -- theoretically the supported limit of Windows 8 on the 82-inch capacitive touchscreen display we just had a chance to go hands-on with at the company's latest OS demo at Mobile World Congress -- but things looked pretty impressive even with just 10. The display we saw is manufactured by a company called Perceptive Pixel, and it may even look familiar -- it's the same glass screen used by television news networks like CNN. But, unlike the giant touchscreens you've seen on TV, this guy is connected to a standard off-the-shelf PC running Windows 8 Consumer Preview. The glass panel is constructed of optically-bonded Gorilla Glass, so there's very little space between the picture and your hand, making for a much more realistic user experience. Naturally, this monitor is all about the visuals, so you really need to see it in action to get an accurate impression of just how slick the experience can be. Jump past the break for our hands-on.

Zynga’s popular casual Facebook puzzler Hidden Chronicles has finally seen its growth slow to 33.1m monthly active users.
The social network game has seen a massive increase in popularity since launching two months ago, and is still the third most popular title on Facebook, behind Zynga’s CityVille and Texas HoldEm Poker. But it now appears to have reached a peak, with users remaining steady at around the 33m mark over the past two weeks.
CityVille lost 300,000 monthly active users over the past two weeks, reports Gamasutra, but it’s still the No.1 Facebook game.
Here are the Top Ten Facebook games in terms of monthly active users:
1. CityVille – 46.9m
2. Texas HoldEm Poker – 33.5m
3. Hidden Chronicles – 33.1m
4. CastleVille – 28.8m
5. FarmVille – 28.4m
6. The Sims Social – 20.6m
7. Words with Friends – 20.4m
8. Diamond Dash – 17.6m
9. Bubble Witch Saga – 15.4m
10. Empires & Allies – 15.4m

German online game developer Bigpoint has confirmed that it will show off a browser MMOG based on A Game Of Thrones at GDC next week.
First revealed in a USA Today report in November, the game is based on George RR Martin novels and is being developed in Unity by Norwegian studio Artplant, which previously worked on Battlestar Galactica Online for Bigpoint.
Bigpoint CEO Heiko Hubertz said: "We intend to build a game that resonates immediately with [A Game Of Thrones'] diehard community of followers, while also creating an authentic gaming experience that attracts newcomers to the franchise.
"The excitement of online games is that, over time, their collective input will help shape the game's destiny; we're eager to see how the story unfolds."
Work on the game began last summer, and Bigpoint intends to launch a closed beta this autumn. GDC runs from March 5 to 9 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

New submitter dcraid writes with a quote from El Reg:"Microsoft's cloudy platform, Windows Azure, is experiencing a major outage: at the time of writing, its service management system had been down for about seven hours worldwide. A customer described the problem to The Register as an 'admin nightmare' and said they couldn't understand how such an important system could go down. 'This should never happen,' said our source. 'The system should be redundant and outages should be confined to some data centres only.'"The Azure service dashboard has regular updates on the situation. According to their update feed the situation should have been resolved a few hours ago but has instead gotten worse: "We continue to work through the issues that are blocking the restoration of service management for some customers in North Central US, South Central US and North Europe sub-regions. Further updates will be published to keep you apprised of the situation. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes our customers." To be fair, other cloud providers have had similar issues before.

Microsoft has made available the Windows 8 Consumer Preview for download in the first public demonstration of the 'reimagined' Windows operating system.
Launching the new renamed public beta version of Windows 8 at Mobile World Congress 2012, Windows president Steven Sinofsky called Windows 8 a "generational change" and said that the OS would "come naturally to people."
The offered download is a 5MB live installer that will install the OS on the machine it's run on although there are also more traditionalISO images to download as well. The 32-bit version weighs in at 2.5GB and the 64-bit variant slightly larger at 3.3GB.
Microsoft's servers seem to be holding up despite the stampede. Microsoft's Visual Studio chief Habib Heydarian also posted a handy blog post describing a couple of different ways of creating a bootable USB flash drive.
Windows 8 will also provide the first look at Microsoft's Windows Store, the firm's entry into mobile-like world of 'apps' for the desktop. The Consumer Preview only allows downloading of free applications and you'll need a Microsoft ID to log in (Hotmail, Messenger, Windows Live etc).
The preview also shows off Microsoft's first serious attempt to make a touch-sensitive UI and offers a range of gestures for users of tablets and PCs with touch screens.
The software giant has also posted a range of introductory videos on the various new Windows 8 features on the Windows 8 Consumer Preview site.

For the second time in under six months, Bethesda Softworks has had to go on defense and shut down rumors of DOOM 4's cancellation. The latest volley came from AllGamesBeta, which reported a rumor that development of the game had ended and showed what are allegedly screenshots of the game.
"DOOM 4 isn't cancelled," Bethesda's VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines told Joystiq. "When we're ready to talk about it and show it off, we'll let everyone know."
In late October, a rumor also made the rounds that Doom 4 had been "indefinitely postponed."

EA is bringing back real-world veterans for Medal of Honor: Warfighter, its follow-up to 2010's Medal of Honor reboot, USA Today reports. Rather than use their knowledge to recreate the events of any single campaign -- such as killing Osama Bin Laden -- they're helping shape a game focused on a new threat called PETN.
It's a recent tool of terrorism; a deadly explosive agent called pentaerythritol tetranitrate. "It's a very real world threat that the guys are faced with keeping off our shores and out of our shopping malls and train stops," says Greg Goodrich, who returns as producer at Danger Close.
Warfighter will focus mostly on Preacher and Mother, two SEALs seen in the previous game. The Tier One operators who helped script the campaign are meant to humanize the soldiers, providing us a glimpse of their home lives and the repercussions of their lifestyles.
"It is meant to be entertaining, and we hope people really enjoy that, but in the process there's a lot of misconceptions that will be stripped and there's a lot of clichés that will be destroyed," said Nate, one of the mysterious Tier One operators and co-writers of Medal of Honor: Warfighter. "And there's a lot of humor that will be injected. But at the end of it you hope people get a sense of 'Wow this is not who I thought these guys were.' They are very likable, very approachable, very family-oriented guys."

PatPending writes with news that Google will be offering up to $1 million for the discovery of new exploits in their Chrome browser. This comes as part of the CanSecWest security conference, and the rewards will be broken down into categories: $60,000 for an exploit using only Chrome bugs, $40,000 for an exploit using a Chrome bug in conjunction with other bugs, and $20,000 for exploits that affect Chrome (and other browsers) but are due to bugs in other software, like Flash, Windows, or drivers. Google had originally planned to offer rewards through the Pwn2Own competition, but they were concerned by the contest rules: "Unfortunately, we decided to withdraw our sponsorship when we discovered that contestants are permitted to enter Pwn2Own without having to reveal full exploits (or even all of the bugs used!) to vendors. Full exploits have been handed over in previous years, but it’s an explicit non-requirement in this year’s contest, and that’s worrisome. ... We guarantee to send non-Chrome bugs to the appropriate vendor immediately."

February 29th, 2012, 00:00 Posted By: wraggster
Confusion abounds following Intel's mixed messages with a recent denial of an earlier executive's claim that the upcoming Ivy Bridge launch has been delayed by over two months.
On the weekend an FT report quoted Intel veep and China boss Sean Maloney as saying that the next-generation chips were delayed up to ten weeks, saying "I think maybe it’s June now."
However Intel spokesman Jon Carvill told CNET that the reports were "inaccurate", by that he must mean that Maloney was inaccurate. "Our schedule has only been impacted by a few weeks," he said.
Likely this amounts to PR spin given than Intel hasn't actually stated when Ivy Bridge will be launched so they're entirely free to declare how far the new 22nm processors have slipped by simply fibbing about the intended release date.
Maloney told the FT that the delay was down to Intel's new industry leading and thoroughly bleeding-edge 22nm production process although industry watcher, the DigiTimes, cited notebook manufacturers as saying that the delay was down to excess inventory of existing Sandy Bridge parts in the channel.
Intel is now playing up the volume of Ivy Bridge to appear in 2012, saying that the chipmaker expected to ship 50 per cent more Ivy Bridge chips compared to the same period of Sandy Bridge in 2011.
CNET quoted an unnamed Intel source as saying that the delay was more down to concerns of supplying enough of the ultra-low-voltage (ULV) parts at launch. The ULV Ivy Bridge chips are a key part in Intel's next generation of ultrabooks.
For all that, we haven't heard any better than Maloney's 'June' suggestion of Ivy Bridge availability.

The Alienware X51 "mini HD gaming computer" has a unique selling point: it's currently the only small form factor (SFF) PC that can condense all the graphical grunt of a mid-to-high-end rig into a sleek, unobtrusive shell, a look that should be instantly recognisable to fans of Sony and Microsoft's flagship hardware. As a hassle-free entry point to the world of PC gaming, the X51 also has some considerable benefits owing to its streamlined, modular design, but as an overall package, is this all really enough to warrant the asking price?
Depending on which of the four base builds you choose, and whether you'd be tempted to add a Blu-ray drive into the equation, the price point is pencilled in at between £649 and £989. A glance at both ends of the spectrum shows specifications that seems quite reasonable for pre-built PCs of this nature, where a high premium is in place for sparing buyers the hassle of sourcing these parts and building it all themselves. The budget-conscious option is fitted with an Intel Core i3 (3.3GHz) processor, 4GB DDR3 RAM and an NVIDIA GT545, while the top-end model we received for review boasts an Intel Core i7 (3.4GHz) coupled with 8GB DDR3 RAM and a GTX555.
Regardless of which build you go for, you also get a slot-loading DVD-RW drive, an integrated 802.11n WiFi chipset, and a 1TB Seagate HDD running at 7200rpm. Actually, it's a little surprising to find there's no option to buy the X51 with a faster drives, or even an SSD alternative, but fortunately this is all entirely customisable once the unit's in your hands. However, you are limited by the form factor - the preferred setup of an SSD OS drive with a mechanical HDD for storage can't be accommodated.
[h=3]External Build Quality and Design[/h]There's more to the value proposition of the X51 than its raw specifications though. Common to all builds is the same extra-terrestrial themed Alienware exterior, featuring a glossy front-centre panel, two curved matte side panels, and inward angled vents on top and bottom that keep the unit nicely stabilised while in a vertical position. For those looking to place it horizontally beneath their HDTVs, there are four very faint elevated points on the left side of the X51, allowing a passage of airflow to run underneath while placed flat on a surface.
You'd be forgiven for thinking that the X51 can be turned on with its iconic Alienware badge at the front, but this is purely a decorative point - the actual power button is a silver-toned plastic strip that runs around its topmost corner when placed vertically. Accident prone users may prefer recessed buttons for these sensitive commands as opposed to this protruding kind, but, thankfully, the button takes a firm press to sink all the way down and register, and remains alight while the machine is active. Meanwhile, the iconic alien-head badge near the bottom can be spun much like the PS3's logo prior to the slim redesign, which allows it to match either of the machine's orientations.

Endgame crafting and new companion dances are among the headline tweaks coming in the next major Star Wars: the Old Republic update, developer BioWare has announced. As detailed in a new developer Q&A on the game's official site, the refined crafting system should pacify players disgruntled that top level PvE and PvP gear is more powerful than buildable items."We are adding endgame crafting for all professions. This includes augment crafting, the ability to crit-craft custom (orange) gear with augment slots, new endgame schematics, new color crystals, expanded and improved research and reverse engineering and much more," read the post.Other impending tweaks include the ability to sync your dances with a companion and an option to skip orbital stations between some planets and your ship."We'll be adding an option for players to go directly to their ships from the surface shuttles as opposed to having them run through the Orbital Station to their airlocks," explained Bioware. There's no confirmed release date for the update yet, though it's expected to arrive some time in March.

Like Hugh Hefner (probably), AMD took a good hard look at its lineup this week and decided it was high time to add a pair of models. Two new Bulldozer-powered FX CPUs will join the pantheon of world-record beating chips in the company's constant fight against the forces of Intel. The quad-core FX-4170 has a 4.2GHz CPU with 4.3GHz Turbo mode (for more on AMD's Bulldozer architecture, see here) while the six-core FX-6200 has a 3.8GHz base clock and a 4.1GHz Turbo mode. Availability will vary by region as the company shuttles out the new silicon on a rolling timeline, but we'd start keeping our eyes peeled next time you're down the shops. To celebrate, AMD is hacking down the price of the top-end FX-8150 from $245 to $185 and you should see a similar price drop from outlets filter through shortly. After the break we've got all the stats we were able to type about these slices of silicon before our palms got sweaty.

More than 50,000 copies of haunting PC adventure Dear Estherwere sold in its first week on sale, developer Dan Pinchbeck has confirmed.
Thechineseroom's game, which began life as a Half-Life 2 mod, was released on February 14 and recouped The Indie Fund's £30,000 investment in the game in five and a half hours. In a post on the game's official site Pinchbeck reveals that those strong initial sales continued throughout its first week on Steam.
"The game has been successful far beyond our expectations," he writes. "This is great, as it shows that there's a real audience for this type of work, and responses have been amazing.
"Not only have we received amazingly positive reviews, but the response from fans has been outstanding. Within one week of launch, we sold over 50,000 copies of the game, which is an extraordinary amount for an indie release."
Pinchbeck goes on to confirm that work continues on translations, making the game's soundtrack available in FLAC format, and patches. He, along with artist Rob Briscoe and composer Jessica Curry, will be at GDC in San Francisco next week, where there will be two sessions focused on Dear Esther.
Last week it was revealed that Thechineseroom's next project will be Amnesia: Machine Of Pigs, a follow-up to revered PC horror titleAmnesia: The Dark Descent.

Unreal Engine 4 will be revealed at next week's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Epic Games has confirmed.
The company will not, however, be showing off its new technology to all attendees; only select licensees, partners and prospective customers will be allowed to see the next-generation Unreal Engine, and those that do will be bound by NDA - which makes sense following Mark Rein's admittance earlier this month that UE4 was up and running "on systems I can't talk about by name."
Happily, the company will be busy with a host of sessions open to all attendees. Staff including director of production Rod Fergusson, founder and CTO Tim Sweeney and design director Cliff Bleszinski will be taking part in 15 separate sessions during the four-day event.
Bleszinski will also host the Game Developers Choice Awards, the annual awards show which takes place on the Wednesday evening. GDC runs from March 5 to 9 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco; for more on Epic's plans for the event, follow the source link below.
