Need something to sate that Windows 8-lust Microsoft stirred up with its Consumer Preview? Then take a gander at this in-development vehicle control app shown off at the company's Redmond campus as part of this year's Worldwide Public Safety Symposium. Developed by Modularis, an outfit known for their enterprise, federal and OEM automation solutions, the Metro-style application turns its host slate into a virtual controller, granting users remote access to door locks, sirens, lights, as well as the ability to pull cloud-based data -- courtesy of Windows Azure -- from multiple cars to determine GPS location. And, as you'll see in the video after the break, it also has the unintended and wholly amusing benefit of freaking out innocent passers-by.

On the heels of the Diablo III release date announcement, Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz has come out to predict the game will sell five million units in its first year of availability.
"Our street-high FY12 EPS estimate of $1.05 assumes first year unit sell-through of 5MM for Diablo III, and assumes that over 1MM of the units incorporate the World of Warcraft 'annual pass' deal which allows WoW players who commit to a one-year subscription to receive Diablo III for free," Creutz said in a statement published by CVG.
Earlier today, Activision Blizzard announced a May 15th release date for the highly anticipated action RPG. The first two Diablo games in the series (along with their expansions) have sold over 20 million units to date.
Creutz went on to discuss some projections regarding a few other Activision Blizzard franchises.
"We also expect Call of Duty to maintain its dominating FPS leadership position, and we believe that the company has a great opportunity to build on its initial success of its Skylanders franchise. Finally, World of Warcraft Western subs continue to appear to be stable vs. year-end levels. We think ATVI shares can outperform the market by 20% over the next 12 months."

Bethesda will announce an MMOG set in the Elder Scrolls universe in May, according to reports.
Multiple sources have confirmed to Tom's Guide that the game, logically titled The Elder Scrolls Online, will be set in the Second Era, several hundred years before any other games in the series and a full millennium before the events of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It will have three playable factions, each represented by an animal: a lion, a dragon, and a bird of prey.
Bethesda has been recruiting for staff with MMOG experience for some time, though many assumed the studio was gearing up for an online game set in the Fallout universe. Bethesda's long-running legal dispute with Interplay came to an end in December, with Bethesda regaining the rights to the proposed FallOut MMOG for $2 million.

Crytek insists its Homefront sequel will succeed despite the damage caused to the brand by the lukewarm response to the first game in the series.
Speaking at GDC in San Francisco last week, reported by Gamesindustry.biz, Crytek CEO Avni Yerli said that the sequel - development duties of which were passed to the Crysis developerin September - was in good shape and had enough "mind share" to succeed.
"Everybody knows the IP," he said. "The first game has a low Metacritic, but due to really great positioning and great marketing it has reached a good mind share.
"I think, with Crytek quality attached to it and similar marketing attached to it, it can make a big splash at the time it comes out."
Nick Button-Brown, Crytek's general manager of games, added: "When you look at the world they created in the first game, and the world they were talking about for the second, the setting they were talking about... Obviously we can't talk about it yet, but it's really cool."
While the first Homefront, developed by New York-based Kaos Studios, enjoyed a successful launch - selling 375,000 on day one and a million within 10 days - the game was poorly received by critics and players alike. THQ's backed the game with an ambitious marketing campaign, but after posting a hefty loss it closed Kaos.
In a surprise move, THQ contracted the Crysis developer to produce the sequel, which is currently in development at Crytek UK, formerly Timesplitters developer Free Radical Design.

Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson says it is a "good thing" that the likes of EA are challenging Steam's dominance of digital PC game sales.
Speaking to Gamespy, Persson - who handed the Minecraft reinsto Jens Bergensten in December - said he was wary of one platform controlling the entire market.
"I think it's a bit dangerous to only have one digital distribution platform like Steam," he said. "I love Valve, but out of principle, I find the idea of one platform a bit scary. So I like that there are others competing - for example, Desura and Impulse, who recently got bought by GameStop. It's a good thing that there are more."
The biggest challenger, though, is EA Origin, which launched last year to no little controversy, with EA criticised for effectively forcing players to use it to play EA games including Battlefield 3. It appears to be succeeding either way - EA said last month that the platform has over 9 million registered users and has brought in $100 million in revenue.
"Origin does a couple of things badly compared to Steam, which is impressive since they had eight years to study [it]," Persson explained. "They should definitely have a chance to do their thing, but they might want to move away from titles that make people use it, and show people why they should use it. But I think, in principle, it's a good thing."

March 18th, 2012, 13:13 Posted By: wraggster
Blizzard has at very long last given a release date for the keenly anticipated dungeon crawler sequel Diablo 3, now set to arrive on Windows, Mac and PlayStation 3 on the 15th of May.
Some twelve years after the last instalment in the Diablo franchise, Blizzard has launched a "pre-purchase" of Diablo 3 for those desperate to hand over their money two months early.
"After many years of hard work by our development team and months of beta testing by hundreds of thousands of dedicated players around the world, we're now in the homestretch," said Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime
The company is also using the game to persuade World of Warcraft players to sign up for an annual pass which will give them a Diablo 3 download for free. Why it's almost like they're desperate to keep people playing the eight-year-old MMO.
Diablo 3 for PC and Mac will cost around US$60 for the physical and download versions. The inevitable Collector's Edition will bundle a 200-page Diablo 3 art book and a making-of Blu-ray and DVD set and will cost nearer $100.
One of the major new features of the sequel is Blizzard's attention to the online aspect of the game. Players will be able to buy and sell weapons, armor, and other valuable items in the auction house in exchange for in-game gold. The game has been in beta testing for several months as the famously perfectionist developer hones the cooperative multiplayer game.

Slow load times and sites crashing are the most common issues.
Tablet use is increasing, in turn restricting the use of laptops and desktops, but research has shown that businesses are ignoring the fact that sites should be optimised for mobile devices.
Now, tech performance firm Compuware says 40 per cent of tablet users have experienced problems when web browsing on their device. Two-thirds have suffered slow loading, 44 per cent have had sites crashing, 42 per cent have site function problems and 40 per cent have had formatting errors.
It's a worrying situation for companies to be in, given that 69 per cent of tablet users believe a site should load in just two-seconds or less, so combined with all the other faults consumers have to endure, they're likely they will move to rival sites.
Steve Tack, CTO of Compuware, says: "Consumers and enterprises have embraced tablets in large numbers for everything from web browsing and social networking to mission-critical business applications that increase employee productivity and drive revenue.
"However, based on the survey results, companies are not meeting web experience expectations. Tablet users represent a coveted audience that in general tends to spend more per order, so organisations that ignore tablet users do so at their own peril."

Spills the beans in an interview with Finnish Magazine.
Nokia is thought to be in the process of developing Windows 8 tablets for a rollout later in 2012, but until now that was just speculation.
However, Nokia design chief Marko Ahtisaar reveals that he is devoting his time to creating the firm's first tablet in an interview with Optio, according to Reuters.
The loose-lipped exec said "We are working on it", when questioned about tablets by the Finnish magazine.
Meanwhile, Nokia is currently using the official line of: "We continue to eye the tablet space with interest, but have made no specific announcements." Yet.
The ten-inch device is expected to come with dual-core power.

You've got the comics, you watch the show every week and you're counting down the minutes until you can play Telltale's game. Well, listen up, The Walking Dead fans: another game is coming ... to Facebook.
AMC and social games publisher RockYou have teamed up to offer The Walking Dead Social Game, in development at Eyes Wide Games. The gameplay is built from two major activities: setting up and maintaining base camps, and sending out scouts to scavenge for supplies. There's also some combat, naturally.
As you can see in the screen above, it's quite the colorful game. Inside Social Games has more screens, and the Facebook page has a few videos showing off some of the characters from the show.

March 15th, 2012, 01:56 Posted By: wraggster
Turns out Mass Effect 3 is controversial. Some people like its DLC, ending and storyline, some don't, and some want to see the entire BioWare team thrown into pools of mud and flogged for days to pay for the things they put in their own game. Franchise executive producer and director Casey Hudson seems to be taking the mixed reactions in stride, and even has some simple, logical reasons behind a few of the supposed scandals, such as Mass Effect 3's day-one DLC, From Ashes.
"I think a lot of the common sense is prevailing," Hudson told Digital Trends. "Initially, it was spun in a direction that suggested that we had taken the lore out of Mass Effect 3 and were holding it inside the DLC only, which now the people who actually have played Mass Effect 3 and the DLC they know that that's not true."
From Ashes is an optional piece of content not integral to the main story, Hudson noted.
"When we finish a game, we finish it many months before it actually hits the shelves and that team goes on to work on something else that in those intervening months represent millions of dollars of development time.... So in this case, we chose to work on a DLC which people really enjoyed for Mass Effect 2 and we also wanted to make sure that people had it as an opportunity to build it into their first play-through if they wanted that as an optional thing."
As for the ending, Hudson said he likes its mystery and interpretation possibilities, and having a reactive ending is better than one that falls flat and fades out. "I didn't want the game to be forgettable, and even right down to the sort of polarizing reaction that the ends have had with people -- debating what the endings mean and what's going to happen next, and what situation are the characters left in -- that to me is part of what's exciting about this story."

Digital Foundry assesses the remarkable rumours surrounding an open games platform
Valve making a games console? That can't be right, surely? The Verge's recent story suggests that the creators of Half-Life and Steam are putting together a hardware spec with "associated software" and creating an open platform that anybody can use to make their own Steam-compatible games machine, an initiative described as being akin to Android for consoles. There's even the suggestion that Alienware's recently released X51 is the first of these "Steam Box" designs, and will be firmware-upgraded to provide support for the new platform once it materialises.
"Does the notion of a Steam Box actually make any sense? How well is Valve positioned to effectively take on Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo? What form could this machine take?"
Backing up its story, the Verge links to a recent Penny Arcade interview with Gabe Newell where he says that, "If we have to sell hardware we will" suggesting that the company would work in tandem with manufacturers if necessary. That interview is well worth a read as it demonstrates that Valve is clearly well up to speed with the latest advances in hardware, and the underlying ethos at the firm is clearly against the closed platforms favoured by the traditional platform holders.
But does the notion of a Steam Box actually make any sense? How well is Valve positioned to effectively take on Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo? What form could this machine take?
There is a sense that the unit being suggested by the Verge article is an "all things to all men" design that perhaps sounds too good to be true. The spec is described as a Core i7 Intel CPU, backed up by an NVIDIA graphics core and 8GB of RAM (which some believe is a mis-understanding derived from a test machine Valve lashed up to showcase its new UI). The Verge article makes mention of a fixed platform architecture as being the key motivator behind this endeavour, but that doesn't really make a whole lot of sense for an initiative based on the concept of an open gaming platform - and you have to wonder what the advantage would be for the hardware vendors actually manufacturing the device if there is only very limited potential for competition.
Perhaps more likely is that Valve is developing its own APIs that will allow PC games developers to run their wares on a range of different platforms. Already Valve has its own networking and online systems - why not expand that to include other elements such as graphics rendering, file systems and audio? These could sit on top of any current OS - be it Windows, OSX, or even a custom Linux kernel for a games console - and allow game-makers to gain pretty much instant access for their games across a range of platforms that far exceeds the PC on its own.
"Perhaps more likely is that Valve is developing its own APIs that will allow PC games developers to run their wares on a range of different platforms - which might include a console at a later date."
Moving beyond computers and into the realm of console gaming would obviously be an excellent means to expand the reach of Steam, has enormous benefit to developers, and would undoubtedly be a Good Thing for gamers too. Buy your game on Steam, play it on the Mac in the study, migrate seamlessly to the console in the living room and grab a sneaky lunchtime session or two at the PC at work, with game progress all synchronised via Steam Cloud. Valve's ethos is unashamedly platform agnostic, which should also mean that there would be cross-platform compatibility for online gaming too where appropriate - something we've already seen working in Portal 2 for example, where PC and PS3 owners can tackle co-op in the same game instance.
But is the whole concept of Valve designing an entire platform simply a step too far for the company? Can a software developer seriously take on the likes of Sony and Microsoft? Well it's safe to say that when it comes to talent at least, Valve is aremarkably well-stocked company. There's the perception among developers that the company hires the best people even if there is no clear, distinct position for them - Valve simply wants the best minds it can get. Indeed, one developer described the company to me as the place you end up "if you've been good in a previous life".
Clearly the company has a knack for attracting top-tier engineers and developers, encompassing a range of fields. For example, it's not entirely clear quite what ex-Microsoft engineer Bruce Dawson does day-to-day at Valve (optimisation and bug-fixing is all that's mentioned), but he's well known amongst developers as the man who wrote the book on extracting maximum performance from the Xbox 360's Xenon CPU. Also, as pointed out on Twitter yesterday by Sony Santa Monica's Director of Technology, Christer Ericson, "American entrepreneur and self-taught computer chip designer", Jeri Ellsworth, is also now employed by Valve, but isn't mentioned on the company website.
