Rage Team plan to modernise 2001 game with GTA IV tech
A team of seven game modders are in the process of modernising Grand Theft Auto 3 using the Rage engine that powered its successor, GTA IV.
The group, known as the GTA III Rage Team, will package together a number of mods it has already worked on, such as GTA III HD Cars, GTA SA: Liberty City, Project Oblivion and GTA III HD.
The aim is to recreate the entire game using the Rage engine. No dates have been set for when the mod is expected to be completed.

Big weekend for the game that turns Newtonian physics into avian fun.
The long awaited Rovio game launched on Friday on iOS, Android, PC and Mac to immense hype.
Now, Rovio's self-styled Mighty Eagle Peter Vesterbacka has disclosed on Twitter that it's already passed 10m downloads.
He said: "That’s a drop in the ocean of the 700m+ downloads for the Angry Birds franchise as a whole, but is still a good start for the new title."

Online beats physical by 1bn.
IHS iSuppli says, this year, Americans will choose to view more films via online streaming platforms such as Netflix – which run on mobile phones, tablets, desktops and laptops – than by physical platforms VHS, DVD and Blu-ray combined.
It claims online film streaming will reach 3.4bn transactions in the US this year, while physical will hit 2.4 billion.
Physical has long been the dominant platform in film, but online experienced a 135 per cent growth in 2011. It now looks set to become the leading platform for film viewing.
Dan Cryan, senior principal analyst, broadband & digital media at IHS, says: "The year 2012 will be the final nail to the coffin on the old idea that consumers won’t accept premium content distribution over the internet."
"In fact, the growth in online consumption is part of a broader trend that has seen the total number of movies consumed from services that are traditionally considered ‘home entertainment’ grow by 40 percent between 2007 and 2011, even as the number of movies viewed on physical formats has declined.

Getting a technically complex game like LA Noire running on a tablet is an impressive feat, and one that OnLive has every right to crow about. That Rockstar took the time to implement touch controls so that LA Noire could be played natively is equally laudable. That said, the touch support isn't nearly as well-implemented as it might have been and is, in fact, downright clunky.
In short, it's LA Noire on a tablet with virtual controls, which plays out exactly how you think it does.

Many moons ago, Google made it quite clear we wouldn't be seeing its browser-based OS on any tablets or phones, but it never said Chrome OS wouldn't run on devices powered by similar silicon. In fact, the issues tracker at the Chromium OS project shows that work's being done to get Chrome OS compatible with ARM architecture, and in particular a Samsung Exynos 5250 chip. That Sammy silicon appears to be inside a new bit of hardware, codenamed "Daisy," but deeper digging failed to provide further details about the mystery device. While it certainly seems like Google's working on a new ARM-powered gadget, it's important to note that the Chromium project functions largely via user contributions, so the work might not be directed by Mountain View. You don't have to take our word for it, though. Head on down to the source link to see the evidence first hand, and feel free to form your own opinion.

Blizzard already planning out fifth and sixth expansion packs following Mists of Pandaria
World of Warcraft might be slowing down, but it's still considered the 800lb gorilla in the MMO space by many. To keep its players interested, Blizzard has already gone on record to confirm that yet another expansion pack will follow the fourth major launch for the title, Mists of Pandaria. The currently planned pack has only just entered beta testing, and has no firm release date, and a sixth pack is being discussed.
Blizzard COO Paul Sams sat down with CVG, detailing much of Blizzard's plans for World of Warcraft in a slowing environment. "I got the pitch from [Blizzard senior vice president of creative development Chris Metzen] of what they plan for 6.0 and I'm pretty geeked up about it. They already know what they're going to be doing for multiple expansions ahead."
"I think the future of World of Warcraft continues to be bright and I think Mists of Pandaria is going to breathe huge life into what I believe is the best MMO out there," he offered, acknowledging the sales dip. "I think the number of people we have playing and the level of enthusiasm they have for the game suggests that to be the case."
While not at its peak of over 12 million players just two years ago, World of Warcraft is still hovering at a respectable 10.2 million monthly subscribers. Blizzard recently admitted that EA's Star Wars did have an impact on their subscriber numbers, but the studio still has no plans to use the freemium model.
Blizzard is also hard at work on their next title that many believe will replace World of Warcraft. Those plans might or might not have been disrupted over recent layoffs that removed 600 employees from the company earlier this year.

UK games industry trade body UKIE wants to cover 100 per cent of the digital market with its charts.
The first ever PC download chart was issued earlier this month, with EA’s Star Wars: The Old Republic crowned No.1 for January.
The data is compiled directly from publishers and currently covers 40 per cent of the sector.
“The response has been incredibly positive,” said UKIE commercial manager Sam Collins.
“Our beta has shown that it is possible to produce games charts using actual data and I am pleased to report that future charts will contain more information and cover a greater percentage of the market. Our goal is to cover 100 per cent of the digital market.
“When we launched the first boxed charts with Chart-Track it did not represent 40 per cent of the boxed market so we are not unduly worried about the current level of coverage. We have a roadmap for the project and everything is on schedule.”
Collins says that the goal is to produce more regular charts than just a monthly. And the firm is already working on a DLC report, which it will publish before moving on to PSN and Xbox Live Arcade.

Digital downloads now represent more than half of all PC games sold in the UK and the US.
Sony DADC, which powers the download services of over 25 retailers and publishers like Metaboli and EA, says this figure will only rise.
The firm’s Matthew Hatton, who looks after sales for digital distribution and games content services, said: “In North America and the UK, we’ve seen a tipping point.
“The majority of sales in those regions are now digital. 51 per cent of all PC game sales were digital eight months ago in the US. Now it’s going to be up to a split of nearly 60/40 in the US alone.”
Sony DADC’s director of engineering Murray Rigluth added: “Certainly for the services that Sony DADC provides for digital retailers and publishers, we see [that growth] very much in the PC space at the moment.”
Rigluth also said retailers should get involved: “We’re on a path that’s never going to reverse. In six to 12 months there will be huge scramble and rush for digital services. This will fragment the market but in five to six years the numbers will reduce and you’ll get more key players.”

After stepping back as lead designer of Minecraft earlier this year, Notch has been considering what to do next. ... While he's still deciding exactly what he wants to work on, he told us that he'd quite like to do a sandbox space trading game like Elite, 'except done right.' Notch is aiming for something with a bit more character than the classic trading sim. Instead of being the spaceship, you'd be a character inside the spaceship. 'I want the space game that's more like Firefly,' he said. 'I want to run around on my ship and have to put out a fire. Like, oh crap, the cooling system failed, I have to put out the fire here.' He hasn't decided to make the game yet, and doesn't mind if someone else takes up the reins. 'If someone steals the idea before me, that's totally fine. I just want to play that game,' he said."

Angry Birds Space is officially available for Android, iOS, PC and Mac today, and to celebrate, Rovio and T-Mobile constructed a 300-foot slingshot, complete with Angry Bird, mounted on the Seattle Space Needle. Today, starting at 10 a.m. PST, Rovio is hosting an Angry Birds Space launch party -- with Angry Birds cupcakes! -- at the Space Needle.
Rovio calls the slingshot an "art installation," but we see what's really going on here: interstellar travel and a public, press-heavy reveal of a monstrous weapon -- it's the space race all over again. This time, it's angry.

The Hunger Games: Girl on Fire, the iOS adaptation of Suzanne Collins' breakout young-adult sensation, is now available for free on the App Store. As you'll recall, Girl on Fire was developed by a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young-esque indie-games supergroup captained by Adam Saltsman of Canabalt fame, featuring artwork by Super Crate Box's Paul Veer and music by Super Meat Boy composer Daniel Baranowsky. The above trailer was actually created before the game was in a playable state, using a combination of the game's art assets, Adobe After Effects and a powerful amount of ingenuity. Hopefully Lionsgate's film version of The Hunger Games, which hits theaters tomorrow, will have as much effort put into it.http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/22/ps...ire-out-today/

Despite having been out for nearly two months, the world has yet to see a decent guide to the Kinect for Windows. While the Xbox and Windows versions of the Kinect use basically the same hardware, there are subtle but important differences. Thanks to [Matthew Leone] and his awesome summary of developer resources, getting your Kinect project up and running is now a lot easier.
After getting the SDK from the Microsoft Kinect for Windows site, you might want to check out the Microsoft Programming Guide. The Windows Kinect can only be used with Visual Studio, but with that inflexibility comes a few added features. Both versions of the Kinect have a microphone array that allows for determining the direction of a sound source. The Open Source driver has very little support for audio input, but the official Microsoft version has all the APIs for audio capture, source localization, and speech recognition ready to go.
At $250, the Kinect for Windows is a fairly hefty investment. A used Xbox Kinect can be had for around $80, so we’re pretty certain the hacker community is going to steer itself away from the Windows version. Still, if you’re ever paid to develop something for the Kinect you might want the friendly APIs and features not found in the XBox version.

We suppose Microsoft didn't have to make Windows 8 play nice with the new rash of extremely pixel-dense displays. But, that would be tantamount to OS suicide. So, we're not particularly surprised to hear that the latest and greatest Windows will support resolutions up to 2560 x 1440 on screens as small as 10.1 inches. That's a pretty impressive 291 pixels per inch. Of course, it's not quite as simple as it sounds. While in an ideal world, every UI element would be resolution independent, that's simply not the case and the infrastructure isn't there to support it. Instead graphical elements, including text, must be scaled to fill the available pixels. Microsoft's scheme will use 100 percent for standard density displays, 140 for HD and 180 for quad-XGA panels. Thankfully, the company was smart enough to include support for SVG files as UI elements, meaning that density and resolution independent future is at least one step closer. For loads more details hit up the source link.

Head over to the official Dark Souls Facebook page, and you may discover a new "app" that says "an announcement is coming." The app is nothing more than a brick wall, which will seemingly be broken down once it reaches enough likes. While we'd like to think the wall hides a stack of delicious, fluffy pancakes, evidence points to the impending announcement of a PC version.
And, by evidence, we mean the Australian magazine PC PowerPlay, which strongly suggests Dark Souls will be featured in its April issue. An image of the magazine has popped up on NeoGAF, revealing a page styled after Dark Souls' infamous "YOU DIED" screen. The magazine is due on shelves April 18, so we should likely know exactly what's going on by then.
The possibility of a PC version of Dark Souls cropped up earlier this year when a Namco Bandai forum admin suggested users make a petition for the project. A week later, Namco took notice of the petition, with the admin telling users they had the company's attention and that "the future is in your hands."

Assassin's Creed 3 is getting the multiplayer treatment from Ubisoft Annecy, the studio responsible for multiplayer modes in Revelations and Brotherhood, an update on veteran designer Tim Browne's Twitter page reads. Browne's profile says "Lead Game Designer on Assassin's Creed III Multiplayer @Ubisoft - Annecy," which leaves little to the imagination (scandalous).
The multiplayer aspect of AC3 remains relatively vague, apart from the "Online co-op 2-4" feature removed from the title's XBLM listing, and the "Online multiplayer 2-8" one that is still there. A few of Browne's shipments included local and online co-op modes, including Operation Flashpoint: Red River andDragon Rising, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. He has no previous involvement with Assassin's Creed franchise.
An old studio with a fresh face -- Ubisoft is sending us mixed signals about its multiplayer mode, and dang it if we're not falling for the tease all over again.

If you're a fan of the underrepresentedMMORTS genre, you've likely been waiting for news from Trion Worlds regarding the upcoming End of Nations. That makes today quite a good day for you because the team behind the game has just revealed the plan of attack for the game from this moment forward. Beta testing is barreling toward potential players (who are encouraged to register for an upcoming slot), with the game opening up sometime in the spring.
Not in the mood to wait for a closed beta slot? Hoping for one but not trusting your luck? That's all right -- open beta is set to start in the summer, giving everyone a chance to get in on the large-scale persistent tactical battles. Past that, players can expect the game to launch completely free-to-play, most likely sometime in the fall. The announcement video just past the cut also promises that players can look forward to a lot more in the way of news updates, something that should help contribute to the overall good feeling of any MMORTS fans.
