Zotac has announced the ZBOX nano XS - which it says is the 'world's smallest PC capable of delivering a rich high-definition desktop experience'.
In full, it's the Zotac ZBOX nano XS AD11 Plus and it genuinely is tiny. At 17 per cent smaller than previous models, the box is only 106 milimetres wide by 37 milimetres tall.
Inside, there's a an AMD E-450 APU with Radeon HD 6320 graphics processor, which means it can offer Direct X 11 graphics, as well as high-definition content whether online or offline.
It comes with solid state storage, with a 64GB mSATA SDD for fast boot and system response times, and 2GB DDR3. There are several expansion opportunities via eSATA, two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, and even a six-in-one memory card reader. It comes with a remote, too.
The nano XS also features integrated gigabit ethernet for high speed wired network transfers, while a USB 802.11n WiFi adapter is bundled for users that prefer wireless network connectivity.
“Size matters when it comes to desktop systems. We are always trying to push full-featured systems into the smallest size possible,” commented Carsten Berger, marketing director, Zotac International. “Our new Zotac ZBOX nano XS AD11 Plus shows that you can pack a complete high-definition capable desktop PC into a miniature form factor that conveniently fits in the smallest places.”
Here's one fixed to the back of a monitor. Pretty nifty, huh?

Toshiba is the latest Android vendor that believes it can end Apple's continuing reign atop the tablet market, and it plans to do so with the launch of three new Excite devices in June, according toVentureBeat.
Seemingly, Toshiba has taken note of seven-inch Kindle entering the market to become the number two tablet because the Excites will come in three sizes to cover all consumer tastes.
These will range from 7.7-inches, 10.1-inches and 13.3-inches, with the latter marking a world first for its size, leading Toshiba to christen the device as a "personal gaming tablet."
The trio will have mid to high end price tags ranging from $449 to $749, while coming loaded with Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processors, Ice Cream Sandwich and anti-scratch Gorilla Glass.
Additionally, memory will range from 16GB to 64GB, while each tablet will include a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front-facing offering.

Not that these fine lads in adventure gear aren't boxy, but they're a sight less cube-like than Notch's previous work in Minecraft. 0x10c is an alternate-reality title, examining the historical timeline that would have been had the space race never ended and our astrological exploration expanded exponentially, until a group of humans awake from cryogenic sleep in the year 281,474,976,712,644 AD to find civilization has disappeared.
The screenshot shows off "flashlights, for spelunking and fixing broken ships!" Notch tweeted. Something about that description sounds familiar, but we can't put our finger on it. Minecraft had spaceships, right?

It's almost time for Star Wars: The Old Republicplayers to begin forging their legacies. BioWareannounced today that the game's patch 1.2: Legacy update will be hitting the live servers this Thursday, April 12th, which will certainly come as welcome news to fans of the title.
In addition to the next steps of the game's Legacy system, which our own Larry Everett has covered previously, the patch will also be bringing a wealth of new content for PvE and PvP players alike. For the former crowd, BioWare is adding a new Flashpoint known as The Lost Island and the new Explosive Conflict Operation. Players in the latter camp will be able to get their player-vs.-player jollies in the new Novare Coast Warzone, which pits Empire against Republic in a capture-and-control gametype. And of course, players of all playstyles will finally be able to tweak and customize their UIs as it suits their playstyles. For the full details on the upcoming patch and its corresponding maintenance, just head on over to the official site.

You know the score. You've stepped away from your desktop, and then you think to yourself, "Damn. If only I could remember that website I'd just visited." Now, users of Google Chrome's latest beta will no longer have that worry. The latest incarnation of Google's web browser gives users immediate access to all of their tabs, across all devices, which can be found within the new tab window. Here, users will discover an "Other devices" menu that gives quick and easy access to all those sites you just visited -- yet for the life of you, can't seem to remember. According to Google, beta users will see this feature gradually roll out over the coming week. Not a moment too soon, either.

Work had begun on a sequel to People Can Fly’s Bulletstorm but the project has since been cancelled, it has been revealed.
Bulletstorm came out in early 2011 and was well received by critics.
And now the president of People Can Fly owners Epic, Mike Capps, has said that the studio has moved onto pastures new.
"We thought a lot about a sequel, and had done some initial development on it, but we found a project that we thought was a better fit for People Can Fly," he told GameSpot.
"I'd love to go back to Bulletstorm. I think there's more to do with Bulletstorm. Heck, it kind of ended wanting more. I'd love to see another project, but right now we don't have anything to talk about."
Capps also admitted that sales of the game failed to meet expectations – with the PC version supposedly hit by piracy.
"I think Bulletstorm was very critically successful, and I think a lot of folks really enjoyed seeing something new," he added. "From a sales perspective it was good, but not amazing. I think [publisher] EA was hoping we'd do better.
"We made a PC version of Bulletstorm, and it didn't do very well on PC and I think a lot of that was due to piracy. It wasn't the best PC port ever, sure, but also piracy was a pretty big problem."

So a man walks into a Radio Shack and the clerk says “Why the long face?”. No, that’s not it. [Ms3fgx] walks into a Radio Shack and says “holy crap, that PS3 IR dongle is only two bucks”. He’s been looking for an IR remote receiver to use with a Linux machine and decided to bend this PS3 dongle to his will. It’s a lot less expensive that the parts to build the simplest IR receivers like this FTDI cable version, or a microcontroller based receiver.
He plugged it in and was delighted to find that it enumerates. The kernel has PlayStation 3 controller support built-in and has no problem picking up this device. When he uses ‘cat’ to display the incoming data all he gets is repetitive garbage. This is because the dongle only supports Sony remote control codes. But after a bit of universal remote setup, he’s got unique commands for each button. The last piece of the puzzle is to map the controller commands to keyboard keys. This is done with the QJoyPad package, but there are a myriad of ways to remap these buttons so go with what you know.

'We'll continue to support UE3 for as long as it makes sense for us to keep doing it', says Mike Capps
Epic Games is set to continue harnessing its powerful Unreal Engine 3 with a new unannounced title currently in development, the studio’s president has revealed to Develop.
Mike Capps said Epic was “absolutely” working internally on yet to be revealed projects with the engine, as well its recently announced and highly anticipated iOS title Infinity Blade: Dungeons.
The Epic boss did not say however what platform the game would be released on.
Capps said that there was plenty of life left in Unreal Engine 3, despite being hard at work building UE4, and that it was only a couple years ago that the company was still selling UE2 licenses.
“After Unreal Engine 3 shipped with Gears of War we were still updating UE2 for a year or two after that I believe, and we were still licensing it,” he said in an interview with Develop.

High-speed SSDs look set to increasingly connect via the PCi Express bus as a new PCIe interface standard is agreed by a consortium of SSD manufacturers.
Previously PCIe-equipped SSD drives have been limited to hugely expensive enterprise drives but the interface holds wider interest with the demand for ever greater bandwidth threatening to outstrip that of the latest 6Gb/sec SATA.
The NVMe standard was formerly defined last year by a collaboration of more than 80 companies. Now new PCIe-equipped SSDs are being developed with the first laboratory offering compliance testing coming online last month.
Connecting solid state drives to PCIe takes advantage of a very high-speed interconnect direct to the CPU rather than funnelling data through slower intermediary standards. While plug-in cards are the easier route to adoption for desktops, it's very likely that PCIe SATA drives will be directly integrated into the motherboards of notebook computers.
Earlier in the year OCZ announced that the firm will sample drives this year conforming to the NVM Express specification and that upcoming drives would be capable of up to 3.2 million IOPS. To put that in perspective, the fastest normal SATA 6Gb/s drives deliver around 25,000 IOPs.
A host of new NVMe SSD drives are expected to appear later in the year.

In preparation for the arrival of their 3rd Generation Core processor products based on their Ivy Bridge microarchitecture, Intel has readied a new chipset dubbed the Z77 Express. New socket 1155 Ivy Bridge processors offer 16 lanes of PCI Express 2.0 or 3.0 connectivity on-die and they feature integrated dual-channel, DDR3 memory controllers with maximum officially supported speeds of up to 1600MHz. The processors are linked to the Z77 chipset via Intel's FDI (Flexible Display Interface) and 20Gb/s DMI 2.0 interfaces. The chipset itself is outfitted with 8 more PCIe 2.0 lanes, six ports of SATA (II and III), an integrated Gigabit MAC, and digital display outputs for up to three displays. Making its debut for the first time in an Intel chipset is also native USB 3.0 support with four USB 3.0 and ten USB 2.0 ports built in."

World's biggest social network plans to play to the creative photo app's strengths.
Facebook has acquired Instagram as part of a $1 billion takeover, which will be made up of a combination of cash and shares.
The two firms already have a natural cohesion, given that both Facebook and Instagram share the same purpose of connecting users through photo-based interaction.
The entire Instagram team will join Facebook as part of the deal, which will close later on in Q2.
Talking of the buyout, Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, said: "In order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram's strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.
"We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook."

That Phantasy Star Online 2 character creator we caught wind of back in March is now online; ready and waiting to be downloaded, unzipped and utilized to forge a character you'll probably never use if you don't import it or live outside Japan.
The character creator can be downloaded by hittin' the source link below, and since it's in Japanese you'll need a working knowledge of Nippon's native tongue to use it. Or, alternatively, you can use this handy guide from the folks at Phantasy Star Fan Blog. Just, you know, don't get too attached once you've made your character.

After a long, difficult and treacherous battle, it appears Dark Souls may finally be coming to PC. Congratulations, warriors -- your petitions may have once again vanquished the initial convictions of yet another development studio.
Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition is set to launch in August, a story in German magazine PC Action says (as found by NeoGAF user Anarkin and confirmed by us). Prepare to Die will feature new bosses, but everything else will be a direct translation of the PS3 and Xbox 360 title, according to Anarkin's report from the cover of PC Action.
Publisher Namco Bandai has previously hinted at a PC version of Dark Souls, if it appeared enough fans would play (buy) it.

In the market for a beastly portable gaming rig that won't break the bank? Origin PC today announced availability of its EON15-S and EON17-S gaming laptops, with pricing starting at $1,525 and $1,576, respectively. You'll of course still be able to hand over an arm and a leg depending on how you opt to build out your system, but considering that the base model is priced at nearly half the amount its predecessor was when it was announced this time last year, we imagine additions will wield a softer blow than they did in 2011. Both systems include Intel HM77 Ivy Bridge chipsets, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M, 670M or 675M graphics with Optimus power-conservation technology, and a 5.1 ONKYO surround sound system. Both cases offer unique designs, with black, red, silver or custom finishes, and a colorful backlit keyboard. What else could you possibly need? Perhaps a press release and a few more pictures -- and we've got both for you right here.

Civilization 5's "Gods and Kings" expansion is set to enter the timeline on June 19 and 22 in North America and internationally, respectively.
At GDC, developers gave us a better idea of the changes in the expansion pack, which will add 27 new units, 13 new buildings and nine new Wonders and civilizations. The big changes will include the addition of religion and espionage, along with tweaks to diplomacy. We're still looking forward to hearing more about the game's additional scenarios, including the "Victorian science-fiction scenario."
