April 20th, 2012, 00:05 Posted By: wraggster
After broadcasting the teaser earlier this month, Bohemia Interactive has now confirmed an additional island in Arma 3. Situated in the North Aegean and stretching over 19 square kilometres,Stratis adds geographical variety and expands the game’s massive military sandbox. The reveal is supported by a fresh web update, trailer, screenshots and info on the Community Alpha.
The web update explains how Stratis - which is located approximately 30 kilometres south west of shores of Limnos (Arma 3’s 300 km2 primary terrain) - was originally supposed to be Greece’s first ‘green’ island, relying completely on renewable energy. However, due to its strategic position, it was repurposed as a military base for the US Army task force, helping them to monitor NATO’s frontline against advancing Iranian forces. Besides a civilian settlement, the dry and hilly island accommodates an airfield, an advanced radar facility and security troops.
The new visits some of the island’s point of interest and offers a first peek at Arma 3’s world in motion.
Ivan Buchta, Creative Director on Arma 3, elaborates:
“Stratis fits our setting perfectly. Mostly because of the dense vegetation, it feels different than Limnos, and by adding many fictional features, we’ve enhanced the original realistic terrain. I’m sure players will love the scenery: the military camps, airbase, radar site, romantic coves - not to forget the shipwrecks and rocks scattered underwater.”
In addition, he also exposed that Stratis will serve as the playground of the upcoming Community Alpha. This means people will get to do some early reconnaissance, while helping the development team at the same time.
Ivan Buchta:
“The fact that Stratis is relatively small, compared to the gigantic Limnos area, should not fool you; the island has enough space to facilitate all kinds of gameplay, including massive multiplayer battles. Just know, once the Community Alpha is out, I’ll be watching from the best sniper spots!”
More intel on the Community Alpha will be declassified this summer, when the game is exhibited at E3.

Industry rookies are proclaiming the end to mobile video gaming with the release of ShowGun from Lost-Ride Industries. These individuals feel that the realistic nature of this just-released iPhone game compares too closely to what real jet-fighters go through on a daily basis.
"ShowGun is a window into another world, a world I want to be a part of," proclaims a close friend of the game's creator. "I've already broken two phones thinking the touchscreen was just a glass window covering the entrance to this amazing new world! It didn't even occur to me that I can't fit through my phone."
And he's not the only one who's enamored by ShowGun, there's at least two more people who feel the same. And here's why:
ShowGun offers:
- Super simple one-touch controls suitable for all ages
- A single player campaign and same-iPhone multiplayer
- A wide variety of jets, some with special abilities
- Star rankings in single player mode for increased replayability
Where should the mobile games industry go from here? How can you build a more realistic jet-fighting game than ShowGun if ShowGun is the perfect jet-fighting game?
"That's a real good question," responds ShowGun's creator. "I imagine it might have something to do with virtual reality, or haptic feedback, or any number of fringe technologies gaining mainstream appeal. But for now, since the world is not ready for the realism that ShowGun contains, we've added one more feature to the game:"
- Fun retro graphics
Pricing & Availability:
ShowGun is available for free on the iPhone App Store at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/showg...8261?ls=1&mt=8

The Diablo 3 beta servers have been temporarily taken offline, after users discovered a glitch allowing free access to anyone with a Battle.net account. Community manager "Nethaera" said an update on the outages will be issued at approximately 11am PDT (2pm EDT). The beta is currently "unavailable until further notice."
Ars Technica reports that starting around 6am EDT, a glitch inadvertently allowed free access to something called the "Starter Edition" of Diablo 3 to anyone with a Battle.net account, whether or not they had access to the Diablo 3 beta.
Here's where it gets really interesting, as if free Diablo 3 weren't already interesting. The previously unannounced "Starter Edition" that was distributed in this manner had all the features of the beta, Ars reports, but occasionally asked players to buy the complete game. In other words, it was a free-to-play version of Diablo 3, or a feature-rich demo. Those are kind of the same thing.

Digital Storm gets plenty of coverage for its boutique gaming PCs and coma-inducing prices, but its latest Marauder lineup serves as proof that it's willing to also build quality, affordable rigs for the masses. Consumers may choose between four configurations, which feature AMD processors on the low-end and Intel counterparts on the high-end. For example, the entry-level Marauder sells for $799 and offers a quad-core 3.6GHz AMD FX-4100 CPU and a Radeon HD 7750 GPU, whereas the most expensive variant sells for $1,299 and includes a quad-core 3.3GHz Intel Core i5 2500K CPU and a Radeon HD 7870 GPU. Regardless of system, consumers will fetch a Corsair Vengeance C70 case, a similarly respectable Corsair GS 600W power supply, 8GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM and Windows 7 Home Premium. In every case, the prices rival the DIY alternative quite well, and if you'd like to take a look at the full array of configurations, just hop the break for a spec sheet and the PR.

The Windows Store, though still very much in the trial stage, is already growing -- and not just in terms of catalog size. At launch, alongside the consumer preview of Windows 8, the Store was only accepting submissions from devs in five different countries and had region specific markets to match. With the next preview release of its upcoming OS, though, Microsoft plans to expand that greatly. Soon enough 33 more nations will be open to submitting apps and the number of country-specific store fronts will jump from five to 26. And, while you'll still have to submit your apps in one of the 12 certification languages for approval purposes, entries will be accepted in 109 different tongues. This move will require some changes on the backend, of course, to scale globally. So, as part of that transition Microsoft has stopped accepting submissions for Consumer Preview apps. We can only hope the down time is short lived and the next version of the Windows Store (and possibly Windows 8) is hot on its heels.

British chip boffins ARM announced the availability of a quad core processor dubbed the Cortex A15 MP4, designed to run at up to 2Ghz and likely being targeted at upcoming Windows RT devices.
ARM described the release as a "hard macro implementation" which means that the design is more easily able to be integrated right into chips produced by third-party designers. The design is based on TSMC's 28nm process.
"This new Cortex-A15 hard macro is an important addition to our portfolio and will enable a wider array of partners to leverage the outstanding capabilities of the Cortex-A15 processor," said ARM processor marketing chief Jim Nicholas.
The company reckons that the Cortex-A15 draws no more power than the Cortex-A9, the design in most high-end smartphones today, while delivering performance in excess of 20,000DMIPS at 2GHz.
Chipmakers have already been working on integrating the Cortex-A15 but the 'hard macro' offering is essentially something more pre-packed which makes it even more likely that ARM's top shelf processor will end up in mobile devices.
The bottom line is that it's this type of chip that will go head to head against Intel's Ivy bridge parts as the CPU architecture war plays out in Windows 8 tablets and notebooks later this year.

Microsoft aiming to simplify OS after years of complexity.
The firm has said in a blog that the next version of its desktop operating system will come as Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT.
The latter replaces “Windows on ARM or WOA” and “will only be available pre-installed on PCs and tablets powered by ARM processors.”
This simplification runs counter to the Microsoft tradition, which has been to fragment its products into numerous different flavours.
But the re-think represents yet another way in which Microsoft is seeking to position the new OS as the biggest change to Windows since it launched Win 95 in, er, 1995.
The new software borrows heavily from WinPho, in that it features live tiles, swiping and other elements of the phone OS. In this sense, it's part of a wider trend for computer OSs to be designed such that they can run across many splintering form factors - phones, tablets, in-car, PC, TV.
It can now be downloaded in beta now, ahead of its summer launch. 3m developers have already done so.

Platform accounts for 15 per cent of the total time users spend watching full-length shows.
Media network Viacom surveyed Americans aged between eight and 54 to achieve the data. While tablets lead the mobile market for full-length TV show viewing, the devices have also become the second choice overall for show viewing, trailing behind TV itself.
The rise of tablet streaming use has come at the expense of desktop PCs and smartphone, which have both declined.
Interestingly, tablet users view comedy and music the most, which are genres favoured by desktop users, while reality, drama and sci-fi are the most viewed choices on TV.
Colleen Fahey Rush, exec VP and chief research officer, Viacom, said: "We found that the tablet is a jack of many trades - it offers video and social experiences, it's a source of information and it's portable."
Results also show that tablets make 50 per cent of users feel happy and relaxed and 49 per cent said the tablets are effective for life management.

Just last week, we reported the unveiling of Samsung's dual-core powered Galaxy Tab 2 devices, with 10.1-inch and seven-inch options in the works.
Now, a 'Samsung insider' claims the firm has stopped production of the 10.1-inch model in order to upgrade its dual-core processor to a quad-core version, according to netbooknews.
However, chip specifics are unknown, while it's thought that America may not get the power upgrade, simply receiving the dual-core option as originally planned.
Seemingly, the seven-inch version will retain its original dual-core processor. This is presumably so that Samsung can still retail the device at $249.99 to cover the low end tablet market, a space that the firm still doesn't have any traction in.

“Many families are overscheduled these days, taking away from valuable study time. Students need to find creative ways to study wherever and whenever they have some free time.” noted Stephen Smith, CEO and co-founder of JogNog.com. “Since smartphones and other mobile devices are becoming ubiquitous, we introduced this new version of JogNog to enable learning anytime, anywhere.”
