Microsoft can't do anything to magically make hard drives stop failing when parts go bad, but Redmond is rolling out a new NTFS health model for Windows 8 with a redesigned chkdsk tool for disk corruption detection and fixing. In past versions of the chkdsk and NTFS health model, the file system volume was either deemed healthy or not healthy. In Windows 8, Microsoft is changing things up. Rather than hours of downtime, Windows 8 splits the process into phases that include 'Detect Corruption,' 'Online Self-Healing,' 'Online Verification,' 'Online Identification & Logging,' and 'Precise & Rapid Correction.'"

Third party browser developers Mozilla and Google have both cried foul after Microsoft announced that the ARM version of Windows 8 would not allow any other browser than IE to run in 'desktop mode' on the operating system.
"Windows on ARM -as currently designed - restricts user choice, reduces competition and chills innovation," wrote Mozilla's legal eagle Harvey Anderson. "By allowing only IE to perform the advanced functions of a modern Web browser, third-party browsers are effectively excluded from the platform," he added.
The fundamental problem is that the 'Metro style' applications only have access to a limited subset of the APIs on Windows RT. One of the functions that's missing from this mode is the ability to run virtual sandboxes which it's claimed is necessary to run some of the browser optimisations such as just-in-time compilers.
Google also backed Mozilla's complaint issuing a statement saying: "We share the concerns Mozilla has raised regarding the Windows 8 environment restricting user choice and innovation."
Another complaint raised by Mozilla is that even when limited to the Metro style applications, Microsoft's has allowed themselves greater access to system APIs than third party developers.
"A browser running exclusively in Metro does not have the APIs necessary to compete with IE or any other modern browser," said Mozilla spokesman Asa Dotzler.
Microsoft's move, they say, stops anyone else from building a competitive web browser for the Windows RT platform.
One might also suggest that any OS launching which restricts third party application capabilities - particularly that of web browsers - may just have a hard time against the likes of more established mobile operating systems. Then again, it doesn't seem to have hurt iOS any.

Intel has typically kept its cool in responding to Windows 8 on ARM, but that war of words (and chips) just got a little more heated at an investor meeting. CEO Paul Otellini saw his more mobile-oriented competition facing a "big uphill fight" without the presence of legacy Windows app support. That's a big drawback for corporate buyers that have legions of traditional apps they want to keep running, the executive said. He also used the opportunity to rib ARM over a lack of any existing Windows hardware. There's certainly no question that Intel has a head start in Windows 8 support, but the remarks do come with a degree of irony. Intel is cutting into ARM's territory with Atom-based Android phones, and while it won't have as much of a problem with legacy OS support as ARM will with Windows, Intel has a lot to prove on its own.

Mozilla has accused Microsoft of trying to go back to the 'digital dark ages' by limiting rival browsers in the ARM version of Windows 8. Third-party browsers won't work in the desktop mode, and Metro style browsers will be limited in what APIs they can use, said Mozilla general counsel Harvey Anderson, forcing users to move to IE instead. Mozilla said it was the first step toward a new platform lock-in that 'restricts user choice, reduces competition and chills innovation,' and pointed out that such browser control was exactly what upset EU and U.S. regulators about IE in the first place. Anderson called on Microsoft to 'reject the temptation to pursue a closed path,' adding 'the world doesn't need another closed proprietary environment.

'Our plan was to break one million subscribers'
Bioware’s The Old Republic has been a successful release for publisher Electronic Arts, the company’s CEO has claimed.
Speaking to CNBC, John Riccitiello said the plan for the MMO had always been to surpass one million subscribers, and believes the current number of registered users had beaten those expectations.
“When we originally started the franchise, our plan was to break one million subscribers,” he said.
“Our investment case was 1.2 million. We told the street yesterday we’re at 1.3 million. We happened to have an earnings call right in the launch period, where we hit 1.7 million.
“We have an obligation to tell them the facts. I think it’s a solid success.”

Stainless Games is aiming to release Carmageddon: Reincarnationby raising $400,000 on Kickstarter by June 6th.
The original Carmageddon was released on PC back in 1997 and although being heavily criticised for its excessive violence, sold over two million copies.
After years of negotiations, Stainless Games finally bought back all the right to Carmageddon from publisher Square Enix and the developers are now able to reboot the brand.
Carmageddon: Reincarnation is a re-boot of everything that gamers loved about the original, such as its real-world environments and action replays of ghastly collisions.
Kickstarter enables backers of the project to pledge different amounts of money in exchange for exclusive content. Anyone pledging $1,000 or more will be immortalised within the game, having their face mapped onto a selection of in-game pedestrian victims.

Just when you thought the Sims 3 add-ons and expansion packs might've slowed down for a second, EA has announced a new one that ties in fashion label Diesel.
The Sims 3 Diesel Stuff pack includes Diesel and 55DSL apparel for male and female characters, as well as Diesel home furnishings. Imagine, next time a fashion-conscious young geek (if there is such a thing), comes into the shop, you could now have the perfect games title for them.
"We always look to create content in stuff packs for The Sims that give our players cool items that play into their inherent creativity and give them new tools to play with life," said Jennifer Lane, producer within The Sims Studio. "Diesel's brand of rock-and-roll meets refined denim fashion style speaks to our fans' love of clothing and home furnishings. What is particularly exciting is you can see the latest fashions in the Diesel stores, wear them in real life and bring them into the virtual world of The Sims to enrich your Sims' lives and modernize their neighborhood."
The Sims 3 Diesel Stuff does not currently have a concrete release date, but it will be available in retail stores and at Origin.com later this summer. Those eager to dress to impress can pre-order now.

Quote:

Release packages for other platforms are available on our Download page. This release brings many notable features, including terrain and water rendering! Domain registrations suggest that EA is planning to follow up its hit Facebook game The Sims Social with a Facebook-based SimCity. Last September, the publisher registered (or re-registered) "SimCitySocial.com," "SimCity-Social.com," and "SimCityFacebook.com," which, put together, provide evidence of a Facebook game called "SimCity Social."
Additionally, as SimsVIP reports, you can spot a Playfish SimCity Social URL ... if you load up http://apps.facebook.com/simcitysocial/ in Google Cache, stop the page before it redirects to Facebook, and view source. It's a lot of crazy steps to take in order to see some shaky, uncertain evidence, but it works.
Even if this game turns out to be real, there's no telling when EA will launch it.Outernauts will likely be EA's big Facebook launch this summer, and the publisher has been sitting on these URLs for months. Perhaps it'll be released next year alongside the other new SimCity.

World of Warcraft's subscriber numbers had been falling at the end of last year, but they appear to have stabilized once again. According to president Michael Morhaime, the game continues to remain steady at 10.2 million subscribers through the end of March, the same as the number seen in Februaryduring the previous conference call for Activision Blizzard. Morhaime went on to confirm that the agreement with NetEase regarding World of Warcraft in China has been renewed, with the companies planning to continue their agreement for another three years at least.
The studio is also seeing definite success with Diablo III; although the game has yet to release, it's currently surpassed all of the studio's previous high-water marks regarding pre-orders. This includes units sold as part of the Annual Pass promotion, which saw 1.2 million copies purchased in total. WhileWoW may not have reached its previous peak, it's certainly holding on to a stalwart base for the time being.

We can't imagine how many clicks it takes to get to the center of a Diablo 3open beta, but Activision has told us how many men and women have braved the potential carpal tunnel syndrome. Blizzard president Michael Morhaime revealed in Activision's annual earnings call today that a total of two million players took Diablo 3 for a spin.
"We recently conducted an open beta stress test for Diablo 3, where anyone could download and try out the game. The response we got was huge, with more than two million people worldwide participating in the open beta." A lot of the testing, Morhaime said on the call, was beneficial to Diablo 3's development – particularly to the Auction House feature.
Of course, the beta suffered its fair share of hiccups, and 300,000 concurrent users marked the high point of the weekend open beta event. We just hope Blizzard is prepared for more than that, because we feel a touch of the flu coming on.
