Look out, savvy graphics card buyer: just because it's labelled 'GeForce' and starts with a '6' doesn't necessarily mean it benefits from NVIDIA's premium 28nm Kepler architecture. We've already seenrebadged mobile chips with last-gen 40nm silicon, and now entry-level desktop cards are arriving on shelves that will stretch Fermi's expiry date even further. There are no price tags as yet, but according toAnandTech the 'new' GeForce GT 610 is a repackaged GT 520 with 48 CUDA cores and an ever-so-polite 29-watt power draw. The GT 620 is a GT 530 with a 49-watt TDP and twice as many CUDA cores as the 610 -- although a meager 64-bit memory bus will put a cap on any performance gains. Finally, the GT 630 is a 65-watt GT 440 in all but name, with a 128-bit memory bus width allowing its 96 CUDA cores to be fully exploited. This latter card shouldn't be confused with the OEM version of the GT 630, whichdoes actually pack Kepler. Bewildering, right? We've quizzed NVIDIA over its strange rebadging tradition and were told that the company simply numbers its products according to raw performance, rather than freshness or chip type -- which sort of makes sense so long as you don't dwell on it.

Curtain will lift on new technology in June
Epic Games will unveil its next generation Unreal Engine at the biggest event in the industry calendar.
Games studio developers are being invited to watch a demonstration of the new engine technologies at E3, Epic Games has confirmed to Develop.
Earlier today the first images of Unreal Engine 4were published online.
The new technology, masterminded by Epic founder Tim Sweeney, has been in development for several years. Details of the tech remain unknown, for now, though UE4 will very likely support next generation consoles such as PlayStation 4 and the successor to the Xbox 360.
Epic recently revealed to Develop that it would support mobile games studios much sooner with Unreal Engine 4 than it had with the tech’s predecessor.

Game creation tool for designers expands to new platform
A game creation tool for the code illiterate made its Windows debut today.
GameSalad, which allows for multiplatform games design without the need for code, has been available for Mac users for iOS development since its 2009 launch.
Since then it has been expanded to include Android and HTML5 platform development, and has powered the creation of over 60,000 games.
“Since we launched at SXSW in 2009, GameSalad has witnessed incredible growth,” said GameSalad CEO Steve Felter.
“Initially, we introduced GameSalad Creator to Mac users, empowering them to easily create and publish iPhone and iPad games without the need to code. We’ve since added publishing to Android and HTML5 platforms, making cross-platform development as simple as clicking a button. Today, we answer the requests of thousands of game developers who’ve asked us to bring this remarkable platform to Windows users.”

Blizzard's set to take Diablo 3's US servers offline for maintenance today, following yet more server troubles and dreaded Error 37 appearances overnight.
For those who haven't been on Twitter this week, the long, long-awaited sequel finally launched on Monday night, before crumbling under the pressure of players attempting to activate their copies online.Subsequent error messages prevented many from logging on to play, and the troubles have continued every night since.
Last Night Blizzard was even forced to release an apology admitting, "our preparations for the launch of the game did not go far enough"
The firm's confirmed it will be performing "scheduled maintenance" on the Americas region servers from 5:00 a.m. PDT until approximately 7:00 a.m. PDT today.
On Tuesday the World of Warcraft developer told told fans who still can't log on to the game to "wait and try again".
On the review front, we're still not quite ready yet (insert login joke here) but you can stick your eyes on Andy Kelly's verdict on the first ten hours of Diablo 3.

In short, MotoHeroz is a physics-based side-scrolling racer with platforming elements and a really depressing leaderboard where your friends show you how much better they are at the game. MotoHeroz is free to download on all iOS devices running version 4.1 or greater.

Free-to-play shooter Tribes: Ascend has been downloaded 1.2 million times, a significant boost from the debatably framed 800K registered accounts from a month ago.
"It is truly the player support of the title that has driven the population growth and fuels our team to deliver updates," said Hi-Rez Studio COO Todd Harris. "We see the community expanding primarily thru positive word of mouth."
Hi-Rez Studios also noted over 110,000 people have joined Tribes: Ascendthrough the company's referral system. Our experience with the game since launch has been chronicled by our "Murderous Skier."

Browser-based FPS Offensive Combat is the new game from U4iA, a studioformed last year by Activision expats. It's an FPS with a mobile/tablet sidearm, described as working together "unlike any game before," though no further details beyond that were provided. The only other aspect U4iA revealed is customization, which we figure is the awesome lizard hat seen in the screenshot above.
U4iA was founded by Chris Archer and Dusty Welch, former Activision and Call of Duty vets. With Offensive Combat, the two hope to deliver "the most competitive multiplayer action ever seen within a browser." A beta forOffensive Combat kicks off this summer.

It's now even easier to buy too many games from Steam. Valve has implemented remote downloading, allowing you to manage your PC's Steam collection remotely, from anywhere you can access the website or mobile app.
Remote downloading lets you start a download on your computer from any of these other sources, and have them "installed and ready to play on your arrival." In other words, you can buy a game from the mobile app and have it download automatically to your home PC, or reinstall something else from your Steam collection remotely.
The Store will even ask you upon purchase if you'd like to remotely install your new game, if it notices you're shopping from away from your computer.

We assume while everyone was waiting for the Diablo 3 servers to boot back up yesterday, they played as much Max Payne 3 as the downtime allowed. So, since everyone has finished the entire Max Payne 3 campaign, Rockstar is mixing up multiplayer gameplay with a free DLC pack for Xbox Live and PSN, titled "Gorilla Warfare."
The Gorilla Warfare pack contains a gorilla mask, which gives players extra adrenaline for melee kills from behind; the lucky coin, giving players extra booty for looting bodies; and the booby trap item, which has players' corpses explode when they're looted.
The Rockstar Pass is also now available for download on Xbox Live and PSN. The Rockstar Pass gives players all of the Max Payne 3 DLC for a one-time price of $30. These offers will hit PC on launch day, May 29.

NovaLogic, the developer behind 1998's PC FPS Delta Force and its subsequent sequels, has filed suit against Activision over the inclusion of its own "Delta Force" in Modern Warfare 3. As you can see in the tastefully photoshopped comparison image above, Acti's Delta Force logo (right) bears a striking resemblance to NovaLogic's – additionally, NovaLogic owns a trademark on the words "DELTA FORCE."
"Despite Activision's irrefutable knowledge of NovaLogic's superior trademark rights," reads the complain, "Activision created knockoff marks that are nearly identical [to] NovaLogic's design and word marks. Activision then shamelessly inserted these infringing marks throughout its competing first person military adventure video games." The complaint also makes reference to the variousModern Warfare 3-branded headsets, Xboxen and strategy guides in production that feature Activision's Delta Force logo.
Both NovaLogic and Activision's fictional Delta Force teams are based on the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, a counter-terrorism branch of the United States military. NovaLogic claims that Activision's inclusion of a Delta Force in MW3 has caused NovaLogic to lose millions, and that if "infringing practices are not discontinued quickly, it is likely that the damage to NovaLogic will grow exponentially, causing more confusion in the market place, and to the reputation for quality that NovaLogic has worked so hard to establish." The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and also calls for an injunction to protect against further trademark infringement.

Dear Esther, the atmospheric indie title from thechineseroom, has sold more than 100,000 copies, shortly following the title's launch for Mac on Steam. Developer Robert Briscoe shared the news on Dear Esther's official site:
"I have to admit I was a little unsure as to what to expect from sales of Dear Estheronce we went to retail, we all were – there was no real benchmark to go by at the time, so I'm extremely pleased to see so many people enjoying the game, and most importantly, proving that gamers are open and eager to new ideas and experiences outside of the boundaries of 'traditional' gameplay. Thanks to everyone who has supported us through this journey, and who will hopefully continue to support us in the future!" Dear Esther is half off through Thursday, May 17 in Steam's Midweek Madnesssale, running just $5.

Friend referral system brings over 100k new players in just over a month
Just a month after launch, the free to play shooter Tribes: Ascend has clocked 1.2 million downloads just over a month after its April 12 release.
The online shooter is the latest in the series that made its debut in 1998, and is developed by independent studio Hi-Rez, a Georgia-based team of 53.
With a unique take on free to play that offers customers the ability to earn unlocks with experience, or get them immediately with a purchase, the game is challenging assumptions about the genre.
"Our philosophy is to focus first on making a fun an engaging game," Hi-Rez COO Todd Harris told Gamasutra.
"Second, by making it free you create a large audience to play the game. And third, you implement the store so that it doesn't give any gameplay advantage to a paying player, but it gives a time advantage or a prestige advantage - the latter in the form of cosmetic skins."

Microsoft revealed new Family Safety features included with the upcoming Windows 8, adding to the new operating system's multi-user account system.
"Computers give children access to many positive experiences; however, parents face challenges in monitoring what their children see online, the people they meet, and the information they share," said Microsoft's Family Safety manager Phil Sohn on the Building Windows 8 blog.
Sohn revealed that parents just need to tick a Family Safety checkbox when setting up accounts for their children. This will then generate weekly reports that describe the PC use for that account.
The activity report graphs time used, website domains visited and web search terms entered. Parents have the ability to restrict activity from the activity report. The report is also interactive from any location using settings saved to Microsoft's cloud infrastructure.
The unveil comes at a time when the subject of web filtering is a hot topic in Britain with the conservative government and elements of the tabloid press calling for a mandatory 'opt in' (to adult content) approach. Eg. blocking by default.
In addition to a load of web filtering levels and search filtering, Windows 8's Family Safety can even restrict the times that the PC can be used and even per-application, particularly games.
"We think the simplicity and power of the “monitor first” approach in Microsoft Family Safety addresses either style effectively and will lead to more family conversations about online safety, a safer computing experience for kids, and increased peace of mind for parents," said Sohn.
