Let's say you're a developer eager to convert your apps for Windows 8 as soon as possible. Where do you start? Microsoft Developer Evangelist Jennifer Marsman is very much aware that you might be at a loss, so she has done the rather large favor of rounding up every porting guide the company has to offer in one handy place. Some of these are pure design guides, like a previously spotted iPad-to-Metro layout article, but others dig deep into converting code for the land of home tiles and charms. The focus is on porting from the web and Windows Phone 7, so we wouldn't work up hopes of bringing your high school computer class project to Metro. Still, Marsman is looking for more guides from readers; if you'vedeveloped just the technique to convert 10 PRINT "HELLO WORLD" 20 GOTO 10 into a tablet-native Windows 8 app, return the generosity and leave pointers at the source link.

Drops, shocks, heavy vibrations, dust, water and temperatures in the extremes -- just the kind of punishment you'd expect a DRS Armor slab to put up with, and the firm's latest do so without thebriefcase-like look. With MIL-STD 810G certification and an IP65 rating, the 7-inch multi-touch slates can withstand some rough and tumble -- though there's no word if they can pass the tesla coil benchmark. At 1.3 pounds, the Android 3.2-loaded X7ad squeezes out eight hours of battery life with a 1GHz dual core Tegra 2 processor. Its Windows-minded doppelganger, the X7et, holds a six-hour charge, sports an Atom Z670 processor and tips the scales at just under 1.5 pounds. If the chunkier look strikes your fancy, the 12.1 inch X12kb has you covered -- though at 5.5 pounds, it's the lightest MIL-STD-810G certified convertible tablet currently available. The swivel screened slate has up to eight hours of battery life, a Core i5 560UMCPU processor, a polarized LCD glass display, a spillproof keyboard and touchpad in addition to a one-click stealth mode that disables light and sound for "covert operations." With GPS, WiFi and Gobi Wireless Broadband options, all three of these are ready for missions at home and abroad, however you might need that stealth function to find out the (currently unspecified) pricing.

To all the executives out there, consider what you have hanging on the walls of your office. Perhaps it's a fine work of art -- maybe even an original -- but it most certainly isn't an 80-inch Windows 8 computer. That curious distinction belongs to Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, who has eschewed use of his phone, notepad and a more practical email solution in the name of awesomeness (or, perhaps compensation for those lagging Windows Phone sales.) Initially said to be a machine that'd be marketed and sold by Microsoft, the company has since clarified that no such effort will take place -- although the door remains open for independent vendors to step in and sell similar behemoth Windows 8 setups. Unlike most tablets, we've a hard time imagining ol' Steve throwing this one under his arm as he scoots out of the office... but then again, the man can afford some mighty good chiropractors.

Stainless and GOG team up, providing original game free to backers of $25 or more
As the Carmageddon Kickstarter campaign nears its $400k goal, digital download site GOG.com has announced it will provide a free copy of the original game to backers at the $25 level or higher.
The original 1997 drive 'em up will be available onGOG.com "in the near future", and this deal sets an unusual precedent of collaboration between a digital retail outlet and a crowdfunding campaign.
Carmageddon Reincarnation has raised $360k with twelve days remaining, making it very likely the reboot of the iconic and controversial "points for pedestrians" series.
“Since we got the rights to Carmageddon back, we’ve been hearing from the community how much they’d love to be able to play the original games again, on a modern Windows PC," said Neil Barnden, Stainless co-founder and Executive Director on Carmageddon.
"We’ve been hearing this message even louder since launching our Kickstarter campaign to help fund our next title in the series, Carmageddon: Reincarnation. The message from the gaming community is loud and clear: Give us something to play, while we wait for the new Carmageddon! So, that’s exactly what we’ve done.”

As PC sales break 6m, combined sales bring block-based blockbuster near 10m
Indie legend Minecraft has sold nearly ten million copies, say developers at Mojang.
The blockbusting blockbuster has sold over six million copies on PC, with both Xbox and mobile sales breaking the million mark shortly after release.
Xbox alone generated a million sales in the first five days after the release of Minecraft on the platform, breaking a record newly set by Trials Evolution as the fastest selling game on Xbox Live Arcade.
"Minecraft has now sold six million copies," said Marcus 'Notch' Persson today.
The Minecraft creator and founder of Swedish studio Mojang later added, "That's the original PC version only, and doesn't count Android, iOS or XBLA sales.'

An unnamed Latvian firm has been fined £50,000 for malicious Android apps based on the Angry Birds, Assassin's Creed and Cut The Rope franchises.
The BBC reports that the apps, which showed up last November on the then Google Android Market, looked like the popular games but were actually designed to cheat consumers with expensive SMS charges.
People who downloaded the app couldn't open the game, and then received three text messages, each costing £5. The firm has also been ordered to refund users £28,000.
Unlike Apple and Blackberry, apps submitted to the Google Play store do not go through an approvals process.
"There is a wider issue here. There is malware out there which can gain total access to your phone," Nitin Lachani of PhonepayPlus said.
"A cyber criminal could then deliver apps to your phone which could tap into your phone calls, your messages"

Yahoo on Wednesday launched a new browser called Axis and researchers immediately discovered that the company had mistakenly included its private signing key in the source file, a serious error that would allow an attacker to create a malicious, signed extension for a browser that the browser will then treat as authentic. The mistake was discovered on Wednesday, soon after Yahoo had launched Axis, which is both a standalone browser for mobile devices as well as an extension for Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer. ... Within hours of the Axis launch, a writer and hacker named Nik Cubrilovic had noticed that the source file for the Axis Chrome extension included the private PGP key that Yahoo used to sign the file. That key is what the Chrome browser would look for in order to ensure that the extension is legitimate and authentic, and so it should never be disclosed publicly.

The first ever official Total War modding tool, The Editor, has been released for Shogun 2 and standalone expansion Fall of the Samurai.TEd (as it's being affectionately shortened) is free and lets any Tom, Dick or Bushido make their own multiplayer and custom VS AI maps.Updating your Total War Shogun 2 or Fall of the Samurai games via Steam will unlock TEd. To install TEd, go to the Steam 'Library', select 'All games', 'Tools' and then install 'Total War: Shogun 2 - TEd'."AAARGH THIS IS EVEN BETTER THAN ALIENS!"
TEd gives you control of terrain type and height, and offers a library stuffed with hundreds of battlefield props like trees, buildings, railway lines, coastal batteries and fake moustaches. From these, you can set the scene for some real stonking showdowns. The Campaign map is off limits, as is tinkering with the AI.If you select your map for multiplayer, it'll be shared with the opponent automatically.Mods have been synonymous with Total War games for donkey's years, but older games were inherently easier for fans to mess around with. As Total War games got more complex, this became harder to do without dedicated tools. And so Creative Assembly said, let their be TEd.Note, however, that this does not mean there will always be modding tools supplied by Creative Assembly in future Total War games.Wrote Creative Assembly in a blog post earlier this month:"TEd represents an important test for us, if a modest one, and it's cost a huge amount of time and effort to create and release."We are really excited to see what everyone is going to produce, but just to be clear, it does not necessarily mean that more tools are on the way."We will be keeping a really close eye on it, and working with the leading modders in future to investigate what other ideas might be worked on for the next Total War, but please don't expect a guaranteed flow of fabled tools from here on."

Microsoft has been going into very exacting detail as to how Windows 8 works, but one area it hasn't explored much is what happens before you even see the Start screen. As user experience manager Chris Clark notes, the days of mashing F8 repeatedly to reach a pre-boot configuration are (mostly) over: you can invoke it either through an "advanced startup" in settings, through Start menu shortcuts or, if your PC is truly sick, let it show automatically. At least on systems blessed with UEFI instead of an aging BIOS, you'll get a lot more to tinker with as well, including going straight to the command prompt, recovering from a system image or booting from external storage. The emphasis on choosing your environment before you hit the power button is virtually necessary. A Windows 8 PC with a solid-state drive leaves just a 200-millisecond slice of time for any user input, and Microsoft would rather not have users caught in an infinite loop of restarting their systems as they unsuccessfully try to boot from USB drives. You'll likely discover the pre-boot space first-hand when the OS ships later this year, but for now you can check the source for more.

[Viktor] is working on salvaging parts from a dead laptop. In his eyes the biggest gem to be had is the touchpad, so he set out to see if he could make the touchpad a standalone device. You might be envisioning the many hells of interfacing this with a microcontroller and writing firmware to measure and translate the input to HID compatible commands. The good news is it’s quite a bit simpler than that, with just one gotcha.
He looked around to see what he could find about the chip that drives the touchpad. He couldn’t locate an exact match, but a datasheet from a similar family of controllers make him think that there should be a PS/2 data and clock output from the chip. After probing the test points on the board he found them, as well as the voltage and ground rails. Above you can see he soldered an old mouse cable to the board and it works when plugged in.
But we did mention the gotcha. There doesn’t seem to be any support for the right and left buttons. Those were housed on a flexible PCB which attached to the white connector seen above. That PCB also connected to the computer so we don’t know if they will work with this hack or not.

Tripwire Interactive has announced a GOTY edition for its WWII shooter sequel Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad.
To celebrate the announcement, the developer is releasing free DLC for current owners of the game as well as throwing a free Steam weekend for anyone with a Steam account who'd like to try the PC title.
The add-on will feature both an ‘Action’ mode with a crosshair, easier aiming, toned down recoil, reduced damage, and access to a lot of weapons from the get-go, and a ‘Classic’ mode with a more tactical feel reminiscent of the original game.
A new Mamayev Kurgan map, and various adjustments to vehicles and game performance are also included.
The Red Orchestra 2 free Steam weekend will start at 10 AM PDT this Thursday, May 24th, and runs through Sunday, May 27th. The new content will arrive ahead of the start of the free event.
All that good stuff said, no word on when the GOTY edition will actually release.

Chrome was recently called the world's no.1 browser, but Microsoft is accusing the source, StatCounter, of using flawed methodology. When a user enters a search in Chrome, the browser preloads an invisible tab not shown to the user, and these were being counted by StatCounter. Net Applications, another usage tracking group, ignores these invisible tabs and reports IE at 54%, Firefox at 20.20%, and Chrome at 18.85%."Whereas the saturation of MSIE is totally organic, right?

Cloud gaming service leverages Scaleform for multitude of devices
With customers now able to stream games to any internet-ready device, Gaikai has signed a deal with Autodesk to use their Scaleform tech to up the ante for user interface across their multi-platform service.
Gaikai makes it possible to play AAA games on any system regardless of specifications by remotely processing game data and relaying the image to the client's screen through the cloud.
With a multitude of devices in a variety of form factors, user interface is a huge hurdle.
But Gaikai is confident that their solution, leveraging Adobe Flash and Autodesk Scaleform, is up to the challenge.
"Gaikai is designed for game developers, publishers and platform partners to deliver the highest quality interactive experiences to any screen on any device, even if the games are impossible to run locally,” said Gaikai CEO David Perry.

Around 3.5m copies sold on day one; First week sales projected at 6.3 million units
Long-awaited RPG Diablo 3 is the fastest selling PC game of all time, according to developer Blizzard Entertainment.
The game, which was plagued by launch hiccups and online hacks, sold more than 3.5 million copies in a single day, Blizzard claimed.
The California developer claims that such a sales feat makes it the fastest selling game ever on PC.
An additional 1.2 million customers received Diablo III from signing up to the World of Warcraft Annual Pass promotion, taking the launch total to 4.7 million.
By the end of the first week, sales had passed 6.3 million copies, the company added.
The sales have also demonstrated the increasingly diminishing relevance of the retail PC charts. Diablo 3, as a packaged product, entered the UK charts at number two behind Max Payne 3.
