Luminos Studio tech to offer high-end multiplatform dev solution
Square Enix has shown off the technology that will power its next-generation of video games.
The engine is called Luminous Studio, and it offers a depth of visual detail never before seen – even in high-end PCs.
Demonstrating the tech was a demo called Agni’s Philosophy, based in the Final Fantasy universe but seemingly not tied to an existing or upcoming FF product.
The short was demonstrated in real-time and offered visual effects that easily matched the level of detail we’re used to seeing in Square Enix’s amazing pre-rendered videos.
“The Luminous Studio game engine aims to bring about greater productivity within game production teams, while simultaneously offering an environment to create games of fantastic quality,” a press statement reads.

Yesterday, Google announced the introduction of a new alert system, which warns Gmail users of ‘government-backed’ attackers.
The warning will come in the form of a banner along the top of the Gmail home page stating: "We believe state-sponsored attackers may be attempting to compromise your account or computer."
In a statement, Google’s Eric Grosse said: “if you see this warning it does not necessarily mean that your account has been hijacked. It just means that we believe you may be a target, of phishing or malware for example, and that you should take immediate steps to secure your account.”
"Here are some things you should do immediately: create a unique password that has a good mix of capital and lowercase letters, as well punctuation marks and numbers; enable 2-step verification as additional security; and update your browser, operating system, plugins, and document editors."
Grosse did not give much information away as to what might trigger the warning.
“You might ask how we know this activity is state-sponsored. We can’t go into the details without giving away information that would be helpful to these bad actors, but our detailed analysis—as well as victim reports—strongly suggest the involvement of states or groups that are state-sponsored.”
Here’s what the warning will look like when Google suspects any malicious activity:

The World Wide Web will see a massive upgraded, allowing trillions of internet addresses to exist.
Currently there is an estimated four billion web addresses online, but with this huge increase in volume, analysts are warning that this shift could make way for a large increase in malware and viruses.
Tom McDonough, president and chief operating officer at SourceFire commented in an interview that: “The number of threats has increased dramatically over the last couple of years, and I think we’re going to continue to see it. The threats are not going to stop.”
Cyber security firm SourceFire was founded by Martin Roesch, author of open source Snort, the world’s most widely developed intrusion detection and prevention technology.

Some say this year’s E3 conference has been something of a disappointment so far – given that rumoured next-gen consoles from the likes of Sony and Xbox have failed to appear – but there are incredible new games out there, and they are running on PCs.
Presumably unable to make mention of any new console their games might appear on, firms such as Ubisoft and LucasArts are running new games on high-end PCs during demonstrations.
Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs made a huge impact on Monday. According to sister site MCV: “Things to note: the dynamic lighting, the incredible cloth physics, the highly detailed facial animation, the lack of NPC repetition. That’s simply not possible on 360 or PS3 if, as Ubisoft insists, the demo was real-time.” Which means it can only currently run those graphics at that standard on a PC.

ot that it plays like Uncharted (though it does), but that it's running off Unreal. In a video tour of the studio, we spotted a member of the dev team using Unreal Editor - and given that 1313's almost certainly a showcase for next gen, the assumption must be that it's using the latest iteration of Epic's game builder.
LucasArts wouldn't be drawn, either on the engine or the platforms 1313 will come to, foiling our plans somewhat - but as soon as we get definite confirmation, we'll let you know.UPDATE: Our man on the ground, Michael Gapper, has just sent through more detailed impressions: "Game was undeniably next gen, and was produced in cooperation with Nvidia. It was running on a PC with a 360 controller, and looked like Uncharted running in the Star Wars universe, but with facial animation, lighting, and physics well in advance of anything on current gen platforms. The facial animation alone is incredible." Also, Mike adds: "LucasArts said the game was in 'pre production'. They didn't even use the word 'alpha', so it's very, very early. There's no way it could run on current gen hardware, but even if it could, I'd guess it'll be out after November 2013 - in other words, after the next gen consoles launch."

In addition to that Series 5 laptop / tablet hybrid, Samsung has one other goodie up its sleeve. The company is also teasing a Series 7 all-in-one PC, a desktop that we can only imagine was built to run Windows 8 (notice that those cheeky blokes in Sammy's marketing department aren't even showing a Win8 screen in that lone photo you see up there). As with the Series 5 hybrid, Samsung is revealing maddeningly little about specs. We do know it responds to both voice input and hand gestures -- both uncommon features for a desktop, especially in that combination. We don't even know the screen size or resolution, but we're told this panel is capable of recognizing up to 10 fingers at once. Lastly, Samsung says the stand is made of metal and the display is slim, but you probably already gathered that. And that, folks, is all she wrote, but we'll be sure to report back with more details between now and when this goes on sale, presumably sometime after Win8 ships this fall.

Even though NVidia and ATI have been open-source friendly for a while now, there still isn’t a true open-source graphics card. [Anton] and [Per] are trying to fix that by building his own graphics card around an FPGA. The project is called ORSoC, and it’s available on opencores.com.
The guys are building the ORSoC graphics card around a Digilent Atlys FPGA dev board. So far, he can draw lines, textured triangles, bitmap or vector fonts, and throw a few 3D meshes up on the screen. This project isn’t intended to run advanced OpenGL or Steam on Linux, but for all the work that into this graphics accelerator, it’s an amazing piece of work.
There are a few demos after the break; a cube rotating in 3D and a demo drawing and translating polygons and a few textures. The ORSoC is a bit slow, but that’s an artifact of the build not being optimized for the FPGA the team is using. If you’d like to test this graphics card, there’s a Git available. As a bonus you don’t even need an FPGA to play around with this project. There’s also a software emulation of all the functions. Very neat.

Gabe Newell has responded to an email asking if Steam for Linux will be released this year with thesimple answer 'Yes.' That means at some point in the next 7 months anyone running Linux will be able to download Steam and start playing a number of games, including at least one Valve title (most likely Left 4 Dead 2). After that the emphasis will be on game developers to start porting their Steam games over to Linux. 2012 could be a great year for gaming on Linux. The news follows the revelation in April that Valve was indeed working on a Linux port of its digital games service. At the time though, and as with all Valve software, we had no idea when it would get released.

As more research unfolds about the recently discovered Flame malware, researchers have found three modules – named Snack, Gadget and Munch – that are used to launch what is essentially a man-in-the-middle attack against other computers on a network. As a result, Kaspersky researchers say when a machine attempts to connect to Microsoft's Windows Update, it redirects the connection through an infected machine and it sends a fake malicious Windows Update to the client. That is courtesy of a rogue Microsoft certificate that chains to the Microsoft Root Authority and improperly allows code signing. According to Symantec, the Snack module sniffs NetBIOS requests on the local network. NetBIOS name resolution allows computers to find each other on a local network via peer-to-peer, opening up an avenue for spoofing. The findings have prompted Microsoft to say that it plans to harden Windows Update against attacks in the future, though the company did not immediately reveal details as to how."And an anonymous reader adds a note that Flame's infrastructure is massive: "over 80 different C&C domains, pointed to over 18 IP addresses located in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Poland, the UK, and other countries."

Mozilla has officially released Firefox 13. Unlike Firefox 12 (or 11, or 10, or indeed many of the recent Firefox versions), Firefox 13 is an important release with a handful of much-needed features that are long overdue. There's a new New Tab Page launcher, with your favorite and most-used websites, and a new default home page with one-click access to Bookmarks, Settings, Add-ons, etc. SPDY is on by default, too, which should help ameliorate the perceived speed difference between Chrome and Firefox. Finally, the developer tools (Page Inspector, Style Inspector, etc.) have been tweaked and updated!

Ubisoft confirms new game for all major platforms
Ubisoft has confirmed that its new IP, Watch Dogs, will be released on PC, Xbox, and PS3.
Yesterday the game wowed the audience at the publisher's E3 2012 press conference, and chatter on twitter hailed it as the "best new game of E3".

It is unknown if the game is also planned for launch on next generation consoles.

It's 1am Pacific, the night before E3 press conferences begin. Time to announce a game ... ? Atlus and Ace Team live to surprise us, and have done so with the late-night reveal of Zeno Clash II.
The first-person fighter followup features a new, open world, brimming with "most of the characters, enemies, and items from the first game--all of which return with dramatic visual enhancement" as well as a host of new characters and items. RPG elements are in, and the fighting system has been updated to allow more precise strikes. And, even more dramatically, drop-in, drop-out co-op is in.
Basically, this sounds unexpectedly enormous, and we're surprised to see an early 2013 release window attached to the ambitious project, for PC, XBLA, and PSN (for PS3). They must be working non-stop .
