EA's Origin service is "a huge success" in its first year, according to EA senior VP of global e-commerce David DeMartini. Despite a rough start with end-user license agreement mishaps and banning some users from playing games they purchased offline, DeMartini said the service has seen 12 million downloads and counts 50 publishing partners among its catalog.
Still, he called the first year "foundational," and he's excited to add "more sticky features" to Origin. Not, like, "We're gonna pour maple syrup on the servers," but in the sense that players will see Origin more as a service (like Steam or Xbox Live) rather than yet another digital retail outlet.
"We want to put features in place where we fully take advantage of your friends lists and gameplay activities amongst all of your friends so you can compare achievements," DeMartini said. "We want you to be able to challenge your friends, and to challenge your friends to play other EA games to try and achieve things that might even be across EA games."
DeMartini insisted that EA games removed from Steam, such as Dragon Age 2, remain off the service due to Steam's rules. "We'd love to have those titles up on Steam, but unfortunately, those titles don't follow the rules that Steam has so therefore those titles are not up on Steam."
As for the future beyond those "stickiness" additions, DeMartini noted additional publishers he'd like to see join Origin. "If Activision was open-minded, we're absolutely willing to take on their great titles. Diablo III is a great game. Call of Duty will be very popular. Take-Two ... I mean there are a couple of large publishers out there that are not on Origin."

A leader without information is an ineffectual leader at best, and a liability to the fate of his/her entire team at worst. When everyone you've ever known or loved is dead, their horrified faces burned into your retinas for the rest of your traumatized existence, will you have enough strength left to curse your own name for being so poorly prepared for battle?
Hopefully you'll never have to find out, as a free Starhawk companion app has been released to help you stay on top of things. The app, compatible with iOS devices and Android devices running Gingerbread or newer, lets players access leaderboard information, view individual player and clan statistics, as well as access an encyclopedia of weapon and battle structure data.

We've taken two major points away from the SimCity Social producer diary above. First off, the game is looking an awful lot like SimCity 2000, which is a good thing in our book. Secondly, SimCity Social makes it possible to send a squadron of massive birds, flying in formation, to take major dumps all over your friends' cities.
We're going to spend literally one hundred percent of our time making that happen once the game launches on Facebook, which is said to happen sometime in the coming weeks.

Having already pushed one patch to servers as part of its response to the recently discovered Flame trojan, Microsoft is making another adjustment on Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 machines. A new update going out lets revoked certificates be published and recognized much faster, which would protect against a vulnerability exploited by Flame to fake its way in as a legitimate update. Informationweek has more information on the old OCSP method used to set revocation status, and also points out another vulnerability in XML Core Services the folks in Redmond is warning people of this week and has already released a "fix it" solution for. Hit the source link to get all the details and grab the update, IT types may want to update their firewalls with the new URLs being put into use for the lists.

It's not often that the folks in Redmond get to debut a new operating system as big as Windows 8, so we can't really blame them for going on at length about every feature of it. The latest to get the in-depth treatment on the Building Windows 8 blog is the Mail app, which has already gone through some fairly big changes since the Consumer Preview and is apparently set to receive even more before the final release. As Microsoft's Jeremy Epling explains in the post, central to the latest version is a three-pane view that's designed to take advantage of the 16:9 ratio Windows 8 is optimized for, and make the best use of all the space afforded by the full-screen "window" -- the latest release is now able to display 14 messages at a time at the standard 1366 x 768 resolution, for instance, as opposed to just 8.5 in the Consumer Preview version. It's also, of course, deeply integrated into Windows 8 itself, even taking advantage of a new networking APIs to detect if you're on a metered network and only download the first first 20KB of each message body if that's the case. Unfortunately, Epling didn't divulge much about those promised future changes, noting only that there are "many more features on the way." In the meantime, you can find out more than you may have wanted to know about Mail in its current state at the link below.

As part of its "Building Windows 8" blog series, Redmond has been doling inside info on apps like Mailand People, and now it's Calendar's turn in the spotlight. Steven Sinofsky blogged that one of the primary marks was to serve up a clear view of your life, and the team wanted Calendar to be easy to read and distraction free. To bring that about, it kept the info displayed to a minimum, giving users the option to easily change colors for important events and drop distracting ones from view if necessary. The designers also stressed ease of navigation, a simple interface for adding events, copious notification options and and advanced scheduling tricks -- like a full page of notes for each event. Of course, Microsoft also wanted to ensure the app conforms to Metro design standards and functionality, and it seems to fit that mold in spades. Sinofsky also said that a lot of user feedback was accounted for, so be sure to check the source to see if that "Caturday" idea made the cut.

App development 'like a drug', says Whale Trail developer
Ustwo co-founder Matt Miller has urged develpers to be careful about going free-to-play, which will put their game at risk of being burried beneath chart-topping hits.
Speaking to Modojo, Miller explained the reasons why his well-recieved title Whale Trail had failed to be commercially successful, and explained some of pitfalls awaiting small app developers.
"We were selling 200-300 copies a day and as we're a small sub-team within a big studio we incur big overheads which we weren't meeting," said Miller.
"We set ourselves the challenge of proving that we could make a game about the joy of flying in a world of make believe and be successful selling it for 69p. Sadly it just didn't shift the copies we needed for it to sustain its development."
Those 69p were to be a thorn in the side of Ustwo as they took the game free-to-play, and many fans felt they were being punished for having bought the game.

Planning to be the kryptonite against the Superman-like iPad.
Apple is laughing all the way to the bank with the iPad, which continues to smash every other tablet on the market.
Android tablets have provided no real competition so far, with even the much-fancied Kindle Fire on the slide after a good start.
Can Microsoft do any better? Rumours of its entry into the space have been around for a while, and have now increased as the Windows giant prepares to make a 'major' announcement at an event in LA event on Monday, June 18th.
It will be interesting to see if the firm does enter the market, and in particular how it will effect the partnership with Nokia, which is expected to launch Windows 8 tablets in Q4.

Version 12 of Opera's desktop browser has been in beta for some time, but today it's making the step up to a full release for Macs and PCs. Along with hardware acceleration, speed improvements and an overhauled security badge, the update includes new browser skins (some 100 themes are available). One of the biggest tweaks, however, is the addition of camera support -- Opera 12 lets your webcam work with web applications, including an Asteroids-style game called FaceKat and Photo Booth. Head to the source link for more info.

Cevat Yerli boasts, "We're the only engine that is 100 percent real-time"
[h=3]Crytek[/h]www.crytek.com
[h=3]Epic Games[/h]www.epicgames.com
Unreal Engine 4 was showcased during last week's E3, and while what we saw was quite appealing, middleware rival Crytek has gone on record to say that Unreal Engine 4 is simply not impressive.
"CryEngine 3 already exists at the quality of Unreal Engine 4. It already exists for three years now. You can go back three years ago to the GDC videos. What we put out there is pretty much what Unreal Engine 4 put out now. And what many others are doing now too. We haven't really put out our latest stuff yet," Crytek managing director Cevat Yerli toldGamesBeat.
He continued, "Pretty soon you're going to see the next iteration of CryEngine, and I'm not putting a number behind it, just the next iteration of CryEngine. Very soon. But we already said, CryEngine 3 is next-gen ready since three years ago. We stand by that. If I look at what people call next-gen technology now, it's what we were seeing three years ago. We already had massive particle systems, we already had GPU rendering, all these things. Deferred shading. We had tessellation already since we shipped Crysis 2. We already had DX11. We didn't just talk it up as tech demos, we have games that are shipped and are doing it."
"We will, very soon, be able to render out film CG quality rendering in real-time. In the next two years"
Cevat Yerli
Yerli added that he believes Crytek still has an edge over the competition in terms of productivity and being able to do things in real-time.
"I think the biggest difference here between the engines is still the productivity. We have invented, back in 2001, what we called 'what you see is what you play,' which is real-time editing of the game in the sandbox using the production tools. We did this in 2001, we put out a video at GDC 2001, and since then it's been the heart of our technology. That's something that even until today, our competitors, our main competitor, has still not 100 percent achieved. We're talking about 10 years later, still not achieved," he stated.
He added, "So in productivity and efficiency, it's something where we claim we're the fastest toolkit around. Because we're 100 percent real-time. We're the only engine that is 100 percent real-time. Look at our competitors and you will feel that every time they change a light or a shadow, it computes for hours. In our case, the lighting is real-time."
Elsewhere in the interview, Yerli also comments on just how far video game graphics have come. When asked about "Pixar quality" visuals in games, Yerli remarked, "I think we are going to be very close soon to rendering computer-generated (CG) film quality. I'm not necessarily pointing to Pixar. But we will, very soon, be able to render out film CG quality rendering in real-time. In the next two years."

Electronic Arts released new versions of SSX and Syndicate as a revival of several classic brands this year. EA Label boss Frank Gibeau told CVG that while the results of the revivals differed, the publisher is still keen to bring back "numerous brands."
"I think SSX was a very successful launch for us and there was some online innovation there that really showed why it made sense to bring that back," said Gibeau.
"It's done well and you'll probably see more in the future. There are numerous IPs that I think about all the time like Command & Conquer and Sim City - which is a brand we've brought back after seven years."
Syndicate - which was reinvented as a FPS - did not fare as well.
"Syndicate was something that we took a risk on. It didn't pay off - it didn't work," he said. "But in general it doesn't change my appetite for wanting to go look in the library and see what we have and maybe bring back some IPs for the next-generation. That's the nature of the business; some stuff works, some stuff doesn't."

June 15th, 2012, 00:02 Posted By: wraggster
Veteran British developer Charles Cecil is gearing up to announceRevolution Software’s first wholly original game for eight years – tipped to be Broken Sword 5.
If the new title is the fifth instalment in the Broken Sword saga, it will be Revolution’s first fresh iteration of the point-and-click adventure series since 2006.
“We’ve risked the frustration of the fans,” says Cecil. “They know that we’re writing a new game. We’re going to be announcing it with a fanfare.”
How - and exactly when in July – Revolution’s new adventure will be unveiled remains a secret.
The game will be a retail and digital release for PC, Mac, iOs and Android, but Cecil - a “huge fan” of Xbox Live marketplace and PlayStation Store - has not ruled out console versions.
Pending official confirmation it would be a shock if the new game isn’t Broken Sword 5, which Revolution has unofficially acknowledged as being on the cards via social media for some time, but whether the game features George Stobbart or not it will mark a return to the company's 2D roots.
The first two games in the series - Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars and Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror were classic 2D adventures. Later versions embraced 3D game mechanics, with mixed results.
Cecil claims the decision to move back into 2D for the new game is not down to criticism of the third and fourth entires in the series, but he did acknowledge that games can “lose something” with the switch to 3D. Cecil said: “When you move to 3D it changes the essence. With 2D the game feels like a classic adventure. But in our next game we will use 3D where appropriate.
“Visually in 2D we can go for a ‘2D look’. Layout artists bend perspective to suit a mood, whereas the 3D camera is literal,” added Cecil.
There are other aesthetic considerations behind the return to 2D, with colours staying true to the vibrant designs of artists rather than being muddied by lighting issues, for instance.
Recently, the York-based studio has found a new lease of life as a developer-come-publisher in the era of digital distribution, releasing successful reboots of seminal point-and-click adventures such asLure of The Temptress, Beneath A Steel Sky and Broken Sword on Android and iOs.
“We have done reboots and they have been very successful and very well received, which we’re very pleased about,” Cecil says. “We’re also very pleased in terms of generating revenue which allows us to work on new projects.”
Cecil - who is hosting the Game Horizon development conference at The Sage, Gateshead on June 27 and 28 - is optimistic about the future of the UK game industry and Revolution ahead of his big announcement.
“These are extraordinarily exciting times for Revolution," he says. "Things have changed radically with the digital distribution model, especially when you have brands people recognise.
“After quite some wait we are thrilled we are writing original games.”

An anonymous reader writes with this snippet from PC Tech Talk, which features screenshots of what is said to be something very close to what users will see in Windows 8:"One of the biggest changes Microsoft announced for Windows 8 was the change from the 'Aero Glass' interface we had in Windows Vista and Windows 7 to a new Metro UI. Until today these changes had not been fully seen as the weren't included in the recent Release Preview. A number of changes have been made to the UI since the Release Preview 2 weeks ago. Microsoft have said the new Metro UI will appear crisper following the removal of shadows and transparency. Gradients have been removed from buttons. The task bar is no longer has the glass, transparent look or blur effect. The new design brings with it some heartache for those that loved the Aero Glass effect as it has now been completely removed from Windows 8."Maybe it's more exciting in motion than are these static shots.

Call of Duty publisher Activision is setting up a new smartphone games label for third-parties. And crucially, it will let new partners keep their IP.
To build the new label, Activision has teamed up with app advertising and analytics firm Flurry.
Activision's new mobile offer will help third-party studios with the development, publishing, distribution and promotion of independently produced titles for iOS and Android.
The pair say the new initiative will "marry Flurry's best-in-class mobile analytics and advertising platform with Activision's industry experience, scale and mobile online platform".
The games will be published under the Activision Mobile Publishing brand, however, the game developers will retain full IP control of their existing intellectual property.
"A world class partner such as Flurry will position Activision for mobile growth in the future and we are confident our relationship will yield significant insight into mobile development and distribution," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing.
"Activision and Flurry are uniquely qualified to provide mobile developers with funding, resources and unmatched marketing expertise, while also allowing them to retain their intellectual property. We are confident this relationship and our new platform will yield significant results and are excited to launch it."
Flurry President and CEO Simon Khalaf added: "We are thrilled to partner with Activision to deliver the most developer-friendly partnership in mobile games today.
"Activision's ability to support indie developer innovation, paired with Flurry's ability to reach over 250 million consumers daily through its AppCircle user acquisition network, positions us to help generate the next wave of top mobile games."

Good news: Last month's unbelievable rumors that a Windows RT (Windows 8 ARM) licenses would cost OEMs $90-100 were off the mark — in actual fact, as confirmed by multiple vendors at Computex in Taiwan, the Windows RT license cost is only $80-95. At this point, we're not entirely sure what Microsoft's plan for Windows RT is. It would seem that Microsoft doesn't want to flood the markets with cheap Windows RT tablets. At this rate, though, we would expect the cheapest Windows RT tablets to hit the market at around $600, with top-spec models (if they exist) in the $800-900 range — well above Android tablets or the iPad. We can only assume that Microsoft doesn't want to go head-to-head with iOS and Android, instead trying to stake out a position at the top end of the market. Whether this is a good plan, with x86 tablets and their full 20-year PC ecosystem also vying for market share, remains to be seen."For comparison, sources say that Windows Phone 7 ran OEMs the equivalent of $30 per device, and Windows 7 for desktops around $50.
