The launch of Blizzard's long awaited Diablo III has rather predictably resulted in Battle.NET servers struggling to cope with the launch-day load.
Also predictably enough, thousands of angry fans descended on Blizzard's forums to complain about being unable to connect. Instead of getting to play the game, they were greeted by an Error 37 - the servers are too busy.
Shortly after, the US servers went down for "emergency maintenance", initially for an hour but ultimately for three. At least that's when some people got to play, other new Diablo III owners had to wait over half a day to get play online.
Blizzard tweeted that the developer was "testing and implementing multiple fixes for the current #D3 service" but then a game bug emerged manifesting as a time out Error 3006. This is apparently easily triggered by players performing common actions and after which, they cannot log in again.
The company tweeted that it was planning a "hotfix" to address the Error 3006.
It's somewhat embarrassing for the firm to suffer such launch day trip-ups given the lengthy beta program but then few companies face launch day demand on anything like the scale of Blizzard games.
For those interested in giving the online RPG, 12 years in the making, a try out - the less patient may be well advised to give it a few days.

The writing may be on the wall for console hardware following Nvidia's unveiling of a cloud gaming solution dubbed GeForce GRID.
The technology combines a number of essential features for cloud-based gaming including GPU virtualisation, appearing as more than one GPU to clients, as well as integrated hardware video encoding.
Nvidia claimed that the solution has the capability to deliver lower "game latency" - that is to say, user input cause to on-screen effect, than existing consoles hooked directly to a television.
Much of Nvidia's claim is based on the "game pipeline" taking just 50ms instead of the aging hardware in consoles taking 100ms. That leaves room for the 10ms of capture and encode, 30ms of network latency and 5ms of decoding the video stream.
The result of GRID is substantially better than the first generation of cloud gaming solutions such as Onlive, Nvidia claim. Not just axing game latency but also using just 75W per gaming stream, compared to the first generation 150W. GRID will also let operators cram 84 gam streams into a rack.
"It will now be possible for game-service operators to offer bundles of games for about $10/month, similar to movie-streaming services," Nvidia said.
Of course that means that gamers get access to the latest generation of graphics, no risk of failing hardware and presumably yearly updates as Nvidia rolls out future architectures.
It will not need a a high-end PC running Nvidia graphics hardware either, just a system capable of decoding H.264 video. Nvidia also highlighted the potential for so-called virtual game consoles built into smart TVs.
Of course the real question is whether gamers will take to streaming gaming in the same was as the world has apparently taken to streaming video.

Accounting for ten per cent of total web traffic.
New data from Adobe says consumers find browsing the web via tablet almost as engaging as PCs, and certainly more than smartphones, with traffic rising ten times faster than the latter.
That's more than a 300 per cent traffic increase year-on-year between 2010 and 2011, which is impressive given that tablets entered the market a good two years behind smartphones.
This will result in tablets generating more web traffic than smartphones early next year, and ten per cent of all web traffic in 2014.
However, despite the rise of tablet use, people still access the web via PC three times as much.
Brad Rencher, senior VP and general manager, digital marketing business, Adobe, said: "As businesses rethink their digital experiences to include mobile strategies, tablets are emerging as the consumer device of choice.

Some of you may have experienced this first hand, but if you've yet to suddenly go offline while playing Diablo 3, here's what happens. First, your game will lock up for a minute or so, then you'll be sent back to the character selection screen.According to Eurogamer, at this point you'll log back in and find that you've retained all gold, experience and items – no penalties there. Once you get back into the game, you'll start from your last checkpoint. The decision to require a constant internet connection initially received some blowback from the community, but it would seem it's not as bad as initially thought, at least in one regard. Eurogamer even notes that being booted back to the character selection screen didn't happen every time – occasionally the game would resume as if no disconnect even occurred.http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/di...alize-players/

Google first teased live tab syncing in Chrome 19 beta, and it's now available for all of us who tread the safer path of Stable releases. If you weren't living on the bleeding edge for long enough to try the syncing early, you'll be glad to know that it lets you see and quickly sync all the tabs that are open on any device signed into your Google account. That includes your phone or tablet, if you've got Android 4.0 and the Chrome for Android beta loaded up. Like with the beta, though, you'll have to cool your jets if you were hoping to get live syncing right away: Chrome 19 Stable is pushing automatically over the next few days, but tab syncing will take weeks to be ready for everybody.http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/15/g...live-tab-sync/

Blizzard Entertainment says it is aware of a game-breaking bug in the newly released Diablo III.
The launch last night of Blizzard's long-awaited action-RPG went far from smoothly and was beset with connectivity issues, prevented from logging in or being arbitrarily logged out. Now several threads on Blizzard's Battle.net forums reveal a new issue, which appears to be game-breaking.
Players who trade items with a Templar early in the game are met with Error 3006, which boots them out of Battle.net and leaves them unable to log back in. A post from Takralus, a member of Blizzard's community team, confirms that a fix is in the works.
"We are aware of this issue and are working on a fix," Takralus writes. "The current workaround is to not give the Templar any gear until after you accept him as your follower through the UI pop-up."
Blizzard said this morning it was increasing server capacity, and had taken its Battle.net websites offline, to address the login issues at launch, and it appears those problems have subsided as the launch rush has settled down; it can only be hoped that it fixes this new issue in an equally timely fashion.
Our Diablo III review will be published later this week. In the meantime, we recommend PC Gamer's work-in-progress Diablo IIIreview, which is being regularly updated with reviewer Tom Francis' progress and impressions.

Almost 12 years after the launch of its predecessor, Diablo III has now been released. The game went live last night with over 8,000 midnight launch parties across the world. 2,000,000 players showed up for the beta test prior to launch, including 300,000 concurrently during an open beta weekend, but even so, the login servers struggled for the first few hours after launch. Diablo III had been in the works for quite some time — another example of Blizzard's notoriously long development cycle — and game director Jay Wilson said it was in "polish mode" for the past two years. "One of our sayings internally is 'polish as you go.' We have a belief that when you put a feature in, you should prototype, but then after you prototype you should do the real thing, and you should polish it to shipping quality." For those of you who are familiar with this type of game, there's an official game guide in which you can browse class skills, items, and other game information. There are also YouTube videos showing how each of the classes work.

Lenovo has unveiled the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, claiming that the carbon fibre constructed notebook is the world's lightest 14-inch notebook.
Lenovo's X-range represents the firm's more ultraportable offerings, often with pricey price tags and impressively slender dimensions and specifications. Now the Chinese manufacturer's flagship ultrabook has appeared under the ThinkPad X guise.
When it comes to size and weight, the new ThinkPad X1 Carbon is no disappointment, revealing an astonishingly slender 18mm chassis weighing just 1.3kg. The X1 also crams in a backlit keyboard with Lenovo's trademark 'pointing stick' or 'nipple' as it's affectionately known with a regular touch trackpad to boot.
The 14-inch screen offers 1600 x 900 resolution with a bright 300-nit display. Ports are rounded out with full-sized USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, SD card reader, Mini DisplayPort and there's even a fingerprint reader.
Intel's ultrabook initiative appears to have given a solid boost to the specifications of Lenovo's X1 Carbon versus the previous 13-inch non-ultrabook model. Shaving 300gr off the weight, adding an inch of screen size and upping the resolution from the former X1's 1366 x 768 .
As you'd expect, Lenovo is decking out the ThinkPad X1 Carbon with Intel Ivy Bridge processors but didn't say exactly what model. The company is also tight-lipped about the exact release date.
While the sexy X1 has received much of the attention, Lenovo have also refreshed much of the ThinkPad lineup with Ivy Bridge upgrades including the T-series enterprise ThinkPads. Also the beefy desktop replacement W-series with RAID drives and even another couple of models in the portable X-series, the ThinkPad X230 and X230t.
Which is all very nice but the X1 Carbon, phwoar eh?

AMD has finally launched its long-anticipated second generation A-Series Accelerated Processing Units (aka APUs).
Aimed at mainstream and ultrabook notebooks, all-in-ones, traditional desktops, home theatre PCs, and embedded designs (there can't be much left over, surely?), AMD claims the new offering, formerly code-named Trinity, has up to 12 hours of battery life, and double the performance-per-watt compared to the previous generation.
The 17-watt APU is also said to give users 'an affordable and uncompromised visual experience for ultrathins'.
AMD said it now has a record number of APU-based notebook design 'wins' with manufacturers ranging from Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Sony to Toshiba
Going back to the new A-Series APUs, they come with the AMD HD Media Accelerator, which is designed to optimise video quality and accelerate video file conversion.
There is also reportedly an increase in CPU performance of up to 29 percent with higher processor speeds because of the next-generation AMD 'Piledriver' CPU core with 3rd generation AMD Turbo Core technology, where power is dynamically shifted between the CPU and GPU depending on application needs, to provide a more responsive experience that can boost CPU frequencies to up to 3.2 GHz.
AMD Radeon HD 7000 Series graphics should increase graphics performance by up to 56 per cent over the previous generation.
“The latest OEM notebooks, ultrathins, all-in-ones and desktops based on the new AMD A-Series APU enable the best video and gaming experiences, highly responsive performance with AMD Turbo CORE, and accelerates an ever-increasing range of productivity and multimedia applications - in sleek, stylish designs at price points that make sense,” said Chris Cloran, corporate vice president and general manager, AMD Client Business Unit. “Our 2nd Generation AMD A-Series APU is a major step forward in every performance and power dimension, allowing users to enjoy a stunning experience without having to give up the things that matter to them most. This experience doesn’t stop at mainstream notebooks. It carries over into affordable ultrathin form factors featuring the latest in AMD Radeon graphics.”

As individuals whose chief export is words on the page, we know full well the power of a looming deadline – oh, wait, it's Dreadline? Well, that ruins our analogy.
Dreadline is a hybrid RPG, real-time strategy title from Eerie Canal, a new studio formed by individuals who have worked at Irrational Games, Harmonix and Iron Lore. In Dreadline, players control a group of monsters who travel back through time to human disasters and kill the humans who are doomed to die in the disaster – one level centers around the Titanic, for example.
Dreadline has been in the works for six months now and is slated for launch in the first half of 2013 on PC.

In need of a new computer, but holding out because you don't want to be saddled with a last-gen OS whenWindows 8 lands? Worry not potential consumers, Microsoft plans to offer a cheap upgrade path to its latest and greatest if you buy in now. Well, not now, but soon. Starting June 2nd Redmond will offer a $15 upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. Mary Jo Foley first reported the deal last week, but wasn't able to put a price on the offer. Now, Paul Thurrott is filling in those blanks. For $14.99 any new PC purchaser will be insured against the coming Metro revolution. This is hardly a new tactic for Microsoft, which has used similar deals to try and stave off steep drops in computer sales as the release of a new OS approaches. The only question we have left is, why the push to Pro? Though, far be it for us to look a gift horse in the mouth.

It's not the tantalizing bit of Windows 8 bait you'd expect in the lead up to that revolutionary OS' official launch, but for a certain domestic segment, it'll do. As part and parcel of its Release Preview -- slated for a June bow-- Microsoft's making the busywork of keeping digital tabs on your household ankle biters an integrated and easily managed feature of the two-faced system, accessible via the "Family Safety" option. Once enabled on the account profile for an underage user, parents will have the ability to receive weekly activity reports detailing web usage, as well as set site / application restrictions, search filters and time limits for PC usage. Despite Redmond's best efforts, there's still one wall this virtual oversight won't let you breach -- your child's Facebook account. For that, you'll just have to make friends. Head on past the break for the company's helpful how-to video.

Last week we heard complaints from Mozilla that Windows RT would restrict users' choice in web browsers, unfairly favoring Internet Explorer over alternatives like Firefox and Chrome. Unfortunately for Microsoft, the situation is now on the Senate Judiciary Committee's radar, and they will look into claims that Microsoft is engaging in anti-competitive behavior. That said, it could be a difficult case to make, since Windows RT is destined for ARM-based tablets, and Apple currently dominates that market. 'When it comes to proving abuse of monopoly power, an important question is determining the market in which a monopolist has power — the relevant market, in antitrust legal terms. In the [late '90s] DOJ case, U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson's findings of fact concluded Microsoft had a monopoly in the market for "Intel-compatible PC operating systems." Windows on ARM doesn't run on x86 chips, so by Jackson's standards, Windows RT hasn't been judged to be part of Microsoft's monopoly.' Microsoft addressed some of these issues in a blog post in February.

PC giants bring end to trademark legal row
A trademark dispute between Valve Software and Blizzard Entertainment has been settled behind the scenes, allowing the Steam vendor to retain the Dota 2 name for its upcoming online action strategy title.
Blizzard, meanwhile, has renamed its upcoming title Blizzard Dota to Blizzard All-Stars.
The finer details of the agreement, including cash settlements, were not disclosed. Both companies claim they will not discuss the matter further.
The two PC giants were locked in a dispute after Valve tried to secure the ‘Dota’ trademark for its upcoming game.
Dota has hitherto been the name for a strategy game sub-genre, made famous after a Warcraft III mod – called Defense of the Ancients – became an in internet phenomenon.

RealID partners with Epic to bring stereoscopic 3D to Unreal Engine
3D tech provider RealID has partnered with Epic Games to bring "true stereoscopic 3D" to Unreal Engine 3
UE3 has had 3D support provided by TriOrviz for some time, but the company says the difference made by their unique tech is something that can't be put to words.
"Bringing RealD to the Unreal Engine makes it even easier to give players the most cutting-edge stereo 3D games possible,” said Epic Games President Dr. Michael Capps.
“We are thrilled to make their tools available to Unreal Engine developers everywhere."
RealID the code can simply be dropped into a program and implemented in a few days, and the depth budget allocation and autoCam features eliminate the need for camera parameters and depth sliders.

Graphics specialist Nvidia has officially launched a new mid-range variant of the Kepler GPU architecture with the GeForce GTX 670.
Based on Nvidia's new 28nm Kepler graphics architecture, the GTX 670 provides "dramatically improved levels of price-performance, power efficiency and whisper-quiet operation for PC gamers," the company said.
Needless to say the usual tech sites dusted off their benchmark suites and put the new card through its paces. It was always going to be good news given the warm welcome received by the flagship GTX 680 but how does it compare against AMD's best, the Radeon HD 7950 and 7970?
Anandtech chose to summarise the card's perforce by saying that in the worst case it was as fast as AMD's Radeon HD 7950 but in the best case it performed like AMD's flagship 7970. The salient feature is that the card is priced at the same level as AMD's cheaper offering, delivering a firm advantage to Nvidia's new entry.
Cards based on the GeForce GTX 670 have hit the UK channel priced between £319 up to over £400 for overclocked versions.

World of Warcraft developer-publisher Blizzard will not have a floor presence at this year’s E3, a company rep has told MCV.
This makes it’s the fifth consecutive year the company has bypassed the annual games trade show in Los Angeles.
Additionally, Blizzard will not be holding one of its own BlizzCon events this year.
This means that gamers will have to wait for further news on Blizzard’s next MMO Project Titan or the upcoming StarCraft II expansions. These include Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void.
However, the company will have a show presence at Gamescom 2012 in August.
E3 2012 takes place from June 5th to June 7th at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
