That didn't take long. HP has publicly confirmed that it has cancelled plans to bring a Windows RT (aka Windows on ARM) tablet to market in time for the Windows 8 debut. The company has decided to focus on its x86 customer base instead. HP spokesperson Marlene Somsak has said, 'The decision was influenced by input from our customers. The robust and established ecosystem of x86 applications provides the best customer experience at this time and in the immediate future.' Sources at HP have confirmed that Microsoft's Surface unveil last week was a huge factor in this decision. HP isn't willing to go head to head with Microsoft when it comes to launching new, unproven products. Abandoning x86 is impossible, but dropping Windows ARM is a way for the computer manufacturer to signal its supreme displeasure without unduly risking market share. It also increases the burden on Surface itself. If other OEMs follow suit, MS could find itself as the only vendor selling ARM-based W8 tablets."

Microsoft will support full upgrades to Windows 8 only from the three-year old Windows 7, according to a report Thursday by ZDNet blogger Mary Jo Foley. Citing unnamed sources, Foley said that Microsoft has informed select partners of the upgrade paths to Windows 8. While Microsoft may be revealing upgrade paths to some partners, it has been much more reticent to keep customers informed than three years ago when it rolled out Windows 7. Among the details the company has not disclosed are the on-sale date and the pricing of the two retail editions. By this time in 2009, Microsoft had revealed both: On June 2 that year, it pegged a launch date for Windows 7, and by June 25 had not only posted prices for the operating system but had also kicked off a pre-sale that discounted upgrades by as much as 58%. The increased secrecy from the company was demonstrated best last week, when it unveiled its first-ever tablet, the Surface, but left many questions unanswered, including the price, sales date, and even the hardware's battery life.

Following in the footsteps of both Microsoft and Amazon, Google has set up its own server service.
It allows those who sign up to access the company's servers and use their processing power to run almost any application they wish.
Known as the Compute Engine, the service was unveiled at Google's I/O Developers conference by Urs Holzle, who manages the company's infrastructure.
The service is being aimed at organisations that require large amounts of processing power, with a demonstration at the conference running a genetic analysis application which used around 600,000 processors.
It is widely believed that Google has launched their own server service to compete for the market currently dominated by Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud and Microsoft's Windows Azure. Amazon's EC2 is currently the market leader in the market with estimates suggesting it powers 1% of all web traffic.
PCR has been following Google’s I/O Developers conference all week long, reporting yesterday on the unveiling of the Nexus 7 tablet PC being produced by Asus and the announcement that Android Jelly Bean – the company’s latest OS is scheduled to arrive in mid-July.

We've just had word from ASUS that the 16GB variant of the Nexus 7 will arrive on UK shelves on July 27th -- slightly later than the 8GB model, which will be sold exclusively through Google Play from mid-July. Brits are looking at £159 for the 8GB tablet and £199 for 16GB. The latter is actually shipping to big stores like PC World, Comet, Tesco and eBuyer around July 20th, so those who pre-order may end up signing for that Special Delivery even earlier.
Update: the 16GB slate will also be sold through Carphone Warehouse, either for the same price as above or free on a tethered contract (but check those sums before signing up, obviously). PR added.

Last year at Google IO, the company was bragging that it had racked up 160 million Chrome users. Since then, that number has nearly doubled, with the company claiming 310 million active users. Those consumers download roughly 1TB of data per day and type about 60 billion words according to Mountain View's crack team of analysts. The company even claims that 13 years of time have been saved thanks to the magic of Chrome's speedy rendering engine.

Microsoft has been promising a cheap-and-cheerful upgrade path to Windows 8 for those who buy new PCs. But what about that five-year-old PC in the basement? If the historically well-connected Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet is right, the upgrade path will go further back -- much further. Although upgraders will still want Windows 7 if they need to carry over absolutely everything, tipsters claim that settings can transfer from releases as old as Windows Vista SP1. Those with truly ancient PCs (we're looking at you, corporate customers) can even bring over personal files from an OS as dated as Windows XP SP3. Like we saw last time around, some of the 7-to-8 upgrade rules are a bit Byzantine -- 7 Professional users can't step down to the non-Pro Windows 8 release, for example, and it's equally verboten to change language editions or move from 32- to 64-bit code without a full-scale reinstallation. The extra-long olive branch will be slightly unusual for Microsoft if it's confirmed, but then the company is also trying to move along a user base that in some cases has clung to XP for more than a decade. Redmond is no doubt eager to get rid of our dependency issues.

Microsoft claims it took the controversial decision to remove the Start button from the traditional Windows desktop because people had stopped using it. The lack of a Start button on the Windows 8 desktop has been one of the most divisive elements of the new user interface, and was widely assumed to have made way for the Metro Start screen. However, Chaitanya Sareen, principal program manager at Microsoft, said the telemetry gathered from Windows 7 convinced Microsoft to radically overhaul the Start menu because people were using the taskbar instead. 'When we evolved the taskbar we saw awesome adoption of pinning [applications] on the taskbar,' said Sareen. 'We are seeing people pin like crazy. And so we saw the Start menu usage dramatically dropping, and that gave us an option. We're saying "look, Start menu usage is dropping, what can we do about it? What can we do with the Start menu to revive it, to give it some new identity, give it some new power?"

Google's Project Glass has been one of the most anticipated and hyped projects to come out of Google in quite some time. After a rather epic demo the company finally gave us a slightly deeper look at the wearable computer of our (supposed) future. Inside is the usual set of components you'd expect inside any mobile phone. There's a "powerful" CPU and "lots" of RAM (though, there was no mention of specifics) alongside an accelerometer, gyroscope and wireless radios for pulling in data. There's a mic for voice commands, a speaker and a camera, which can also be controlled by the touchpad that lines the side of the wearable device. All of those components sit off to one side, though Google says they're still well-balanced and actually lighter than some pairs of sunglasses. The tiny transparent display doesn't actually sit directly in front of your eye. It's slightly above your line of vision, so that it shouldn't interfere with your normal life.
Sergey Brin had three different prototypes on stage -- a light blue pair, a white pair and a black pair -- indicating that personalization and style were concerns. And that's a good thing since Glass is meant to be worn in public. Ultimately Google hopes that the project will be the next step in its quest to make information quickly and universally accessible. The ability to capture images from the first person perspective seems to be key to the device. In a new demo video, a new mother waxes about how hard it is to capture those perfect moments with her child. She "smiles at faces not devices" which makes sticking a D5 in the baby's face a bad idea.
If you're impatient and lucky enough to have been at IO (and live in the US), you can actually pre-order an Explorer Edition of the wearable computer for $1,500. The dev focused units will be shipping early next year. But, be warned, this is not a mass consumer item and will likely be more than a little rough around the edges.

Google takes a direct shot at Amazon's Kindle Fire
[h=3]Google[/h]
At the Google I/O 2012 main presentation, Google finally took the wraps off the long-awaited Google Nexus 7 tablet. The Asus-designed tablet features a 7-inch, 1280x800 IPS display powered by Nvidia's Tegra 3 quad-core processor. The tablet comes with the 4.1 version of Google's Android operating system, also known as Jelly Bean.
The Nexus 7 is priced at $199 for an 8GB version and $249 for the 16GB model, putting it as a direct competitor for Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet released last year. Google is also backing up the tablet with an expansion of its Google Play store, featuring an all-new look and the addition of magazines.
Google is taking pre-orders of the tablet on its Google Play page, with an expected shipping window of later in July.

Californian federal court finds for Apple in patent dispute with Samsung.
In the latest twist in a tortuous saga, Judge Lucy H Koh of the US District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose division has banned the sale of the Tab or any similar product on the grounds that it is substantially similar "in the eyes of the ordinary observer" to Apple's iPad.
Apple took action against Samsung over an alleged infringement of Design Patent No. D504,889, which refers to the design of the device.
Needless to say, this is far from the end of the matter. Samsung will appeal, and Apple has been ordered to post a bond for $2.6 million towards any damages if it is decided that Samsung was wronged.
It is just one victory in a tit-for-tat series of lawsuits between the two giants of the handset space, with Apple suing over design and UI issues and Samsung suing back over issues to do with the way the devices connect to networks.

Star Wars: The Old Republic's patch 1.3 has been in the news for a while, but the wait for it is finally over. After extended maintenance on the game from midnight to 4am PDT last night, the "Allies" update is up now.
Those new features include the Group Finder tool, which is something thatSW:TOR players have been seeking since launch. There's also the Legacy System, for players with more than one character, and Adaptive Gear, which is armor that can be modded in combat for other abilities. If you've been out of the game for lack of one of these features, now's the time to jump back in.

Developer behind Star Trek working on sci-fi PC shooter for this winter
Digital Extremes, which is working on Star Trek for 2013, has unveiled another project under its banner. Warframe, a new PvE sci-fi shooter will be coming out late this year with the hope for a beta by fall. The new game will be a free-to-play shooter, one that Digital Extremes hopes will create an 'evolving world' for gamers to shape and play in.
"We've heard for years now that PC gaming is dead. It isn't dead; it just went underground for a few years and is now re-emerging with this massively growing free-to-play market that has matured to the point where the quality of games we're seeing rivals many AAA retail games," said head of Digital Extremes James Schmalz.
Warframe is something that the studio has wanted to work on for some time, says chief creative director Steve Sinclair. With a solid F2P business model and a push to really include player feedback, Digital Extremes believes that the game will be a solid performer in the triple-A market, one that has been seeing major successes in titles
like World of Tanks and League of Legends.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/article...n-f2p-warframe
Of course, the team is still working on the Star Trek title, which was recently pushed back to a 2013 release date. The team will be working on a game that directly relates to the J.J. Abrams universe created back in 2009 with the movie.

Minecraft developer Mojang has revealed that its next game, Scrolls, is close to entering the closed alpha stage.
“We are rapidly approaching the closed alpha of Scrolls,” the game’s official blog stated. “Although this alpha version will be far from a feature complete version of the game, it will include multiplayer matches, single player matches vs AI and the Deck Builder, where you can build your decks out of the 100+ scrolls that currently exist in the game.
“As we get closer to a stable build, we will stop the closed alpha, and move to an open beta, where you will be able to buy the game at a reduced price and with some added benefits (more about that later).
“At that point, we will also look to include the single player world, where you can explore and do battle to earn new scrolls to your collection.
“Keep in mind, that the beta will not be feature complete. We will still have a big bag of goodies that we plan to include over time, such as an auction house where you may buy or sell scrolls from each other and additional features in the world such as character customization, items, quests and so on.
“If you’re wondering why we would release a game that’s obviously not finished, the reason is simple: We want your feedback in good time to help us shape Scrolls to be the next big online Collectible Card Game!”

In a detailed interview on the future of education, Bill Gates was surprisingly down on tablets in education — considering that Microsoft just released Surface. He said low-cost PCs are the thing for students, and he dismissed the idea that simply giving gadgets to students will bring change. Quoting: 'Just giving people devices has a really horrible track record. You really have to change the curriculum and the teacher. And it's never going to work on a device where you don't have a keyboard-type input. Students aren't there just to read things. They're actually supposed to be able to write and communicate. And so it's going to be more in the PC realm—it's going to be a low-cost PC that lets them be highly interactive
