"It has been quite a while since Slashdot last covered multi-monitor gaming. A lot has changed in the interim. Monitors prices continue to fall, and improved AMD Eyefinity and Nvidia Surround implementations make creating multi-display arrays incredibly easy. Graphics cards have gotten faster, allowing high-end models to handle the latest games at the ultra-high resolutions that multi-screen setups enable. Developers are doing a better job of supporting those resolutions, too, although HUD placement and single-screen cinematics are still problematic in some titles. Even in the games that do have niggling flaws, the wider perspective of a triple-screen config can offer a more engaging and immersive experience. As stereoscopic 3D implementations fail to catch on, multi-screen setups look like the best upgrade for PC gamers."

Brisbane-based entrepreneur John Lambie currently has in beta an alternative to what he calls the 'dysfunctional' QWERTY keyboard. Given the way the world is abandoning their keyboards for smartphones he sees now as the perfect time to introduce a new layout. He calls his new keyboard Dextr and believes it is the natural progression from using a number pad to enter text — This is especially so in developing countries where users have not grown up with QWERTYs on thier phones. While he is not the first to ever propose an alternate or alphabetical keyboard — Are we locked into QWERTY for familiarity's sake, or as we shift to smaller, more mobile and new devices, is Mr. Lambie's project coming at the right time?"

A few weeks ago we caught wind of [Mick] breaking out his screwdrivers and soldering iron to get a serial console on his son’s VTech InnoTab. [Mick] was able to get the touchscreen working and successfully ported SCUMMVM to the device, but there was still a long road ahead to get the source for this pint-sized tablet.
[David Anders] from elinux.org wrote in to tell us VTech is now giving away their source for the InnoTab, something they’ve been holding back so far. [Dave] is now verifying the VTech release is 100% complete, so if you’d like to give him a hand, drop him a line.
If you’re thinking this is your ticket to an inexpensive and powerful Linux tablet, prepare to be disappointed. The InnoTab is an ARM 11 running at 180 MHz with a paltry 64 MB of RAM. That’s not exactly top-of-the-line hardware, but at the very least you’ll be able to on it.

Privacy row brewing as early users discover the tool knows where they live – whether they tell them or not.
Google unveiled Google Now at its recent Google IO event. The search aid will be part of the next update of Android OS. Google says it allows users to get "just the information at just the right time".
Now reports are hitting the internet describing just how accurate it is.
A user on Reddit posted: "I don’t know if this has happened to anyone else, but Google Now knows where I live. After 3 days on [Jelly Bean], I opened Google Now at work and it gave me time and directions to get back home. I thought it was cool and then I opened up Google Maps on my home computer. Lo and behold there is now a new, completely different looking icon where I live that is labeled home. I didn’t add it nor did I ever even search for directions back home. I’m not afraid of technology or anything, but that one was pretty odd."
Meanwhile an article at Android Does.com describes how the writer is already getting unsolicited "cards" delivered to his phone with details on how long the drive home will take, what the weather will be like the next day and how his team is doing.
With accurate voice recognition too, Google Now is (obviously) being touted as a Siri killer. Time will tell, but it will be interesting to watch how Google positions its smartphone personal assistant, as the line between cool and creepy becomes increasingly hard to discern.

We're wondering if Kouziro saw the ASUS Transformer AIO and developed a little Freudian envy. That would certainly help explain the company's FT103 tablet, which at 21.5 inches is one of the biggest devices running Android 4.0 without veering into full-size TV territory. If you're having sudden flashbacks to the Toshiba Excite 13 and dreading the thought of lugging around all 11 pounds of this slab, you'll breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Kouziro doesn't make any pretenses surrounding portability: there's no battery, and a kickstand keeps it upright on a desk rather than crushing your lap. The lackluster 1GHz TI OMAP 4428 processor and 8GB of storage certainly won't do much to draw attention, though. All the same, the HDMI input and 1080p screen resolution could make it a very clever secondary display for another device, and the extra-extra-extra-large size lets it stuff in two full USB ports and Ethernet along with the usual front camera and mobile expansion. The late July release in Japan and the ¥34,800 ($437) price aren't outlandish for what's in the box -- just brace yourself for psychoanalysis from friends and family after taking the FT103 home.

So, that first round of Nexus Q hacks? Impressive in terms of turn around time, not so much when functionality is your primary metric. But, a couple of weeks with the gorgeous, if questionably usefuldevice, has started to produce some truly exciting results. The one that has our tinkering fingers itching most, puts a launcher and apps right at your finger tips... well, mouse pointer. The hack is hardly for the meek but, if you're already in possession of a Nexus Q, we're sure pushing a few .apks via adb won't unsettle you too much. The solution is far from perfect, but the Android foundation is able to recognize keyboards and mice it seems without issue. What really makes this a great hack, of course, is the ability to install apps like Netflix and Angry Birds finally freeing the Q from its arguably artificial shackles. If you're looking for something a little less involved (and decidedly less cool) there's also QRemote, an .apk you can push to your Q that lets you control it via a web browser. It doesn't expose any additional functionality, but at least it lets you skip tracks from your PC or other non-Jelly Bean device. You can see both in action after the break, and all the relevant files and accompanying instructions live at the source links.

EA Sports says it is up to the fans if the next football tournament tie-in gets a boxed release.
The publisher released this year’s Euro 2012 tie-in as a DLC add-on to FIFA 12. But that doesn’t mean the same will happen with 2014’s World Cup game.
“Gamers in all honesty asked for it to be delivered that way, and what you’ve seen from us over the last 18 months, is that we are listening to gamers more now ever before,” said EA Sports EVP Andrew Wilson.
“When you asked ‘will all tournaments go this way?’, we will do things based on gamer demand. And you know with 25m people engaged playing 10m games a day with us, and with nearly 20m Facebook fans involved in a daily conversation about what we do and how we do it, not to mention the many millions of people in our forums.
"We’re going to listen and we’re going to do our best to deliver what is asked for by gamers.”

July 10th, 2012, 23:23 Posted By: wraggster
At the Develop Conference in Brighton today, COO and co-founder of browser game publishing platform Turbulenz Gavin Shields’ talk pointed to the fact that the top 50 games on the App Store account for 71 per cent of its revenue - this, Shields says, is proof that latecomers simply can’t crack a market that has already had its heyday. Cut The Rope, whatever its other charms, made money by getting out of the gate first. The early Angry Bird catches the worm.
Instead, to guarantee better success, Shields recommends developing for the tech of tomorrow - which, he believes, is HTML5. Regardless of its teething problems, Shields predicts that it will eventually muscle out thirdparty plugins. Even now, thanks to Chrome’s recent uptake of WebGL, it is supported by the browsers of some 1.3 billion users. That number will only grow. Already, HTML5 is capable of running games of low-end console quality in the humble web browser - and its capabilities will only improve.
However, irrespective of the technology underpinning them, we wonder if browser games represent the sort of new frontier that buoyed the sales of early big-hitting smartphone games. Buying and playing games through a browser is an experience that exists today in multiple forms - through Facebook, the Chrome Store, Flash gaming hubs and others. Before smartphones, there were no smartphone games - the analogy Shields makes between the App Store’s rosy dawn and the nascent high-end browser gaming scene is not a perfect fit.
Really, what Shields is asking you to bet on is that his HTML5 development SDK and publishing platform will become a dominant player in the browser scene. And, actually, he may not be wrong. The deal they are offering developers is a tempting one: you can use their SDK for free. You can publish your game privately online through the Turbulenz hub for the purpose of testing and iteration - again for free. Once completed, you can sell your game anywhere you please without paying royalties, but Turbulenz reserves the right to cherry pick the best games and sell them through its website as well, from which it takes a 30 per cent cut.
Unlike the early days of smartphone gaming, Turbulenz’s particular market will only exist when there are games to sell on it. Meanwhile, only a flood of impartial testimonials will make clear how Turbulenz’s API stacks up alongside competitor’s, working within HTML5 and without, like Unity. But what is clear is that they need those developers on board and are willing to offer a very equitable deal to entice them.

An anonymous reader tips an article about comments from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer regarding Microsoft's attitude toward Apple. It seems Microsoft is tired of being behind the curve in most areas of the tech market, and will be trying very hard to prevent Apple and other companies from beating them to the punch in the future. From the article:"In a recent interview, Ballmer explained that the company had ceded innovations in hardware and software to Apple, but that the-times-they-are-a-'changin. 'We are trying to make absolutely clear we are not going to leave any space uncovered to Apple,' Ballmer explained. 'Not the consumer cloud. Not hardware software innovation. We are not leaving any of that to Apple by itself. Not going to happen. Not on our watch.' ... An admirable goal, but it's fair to argue that attempting to innovate everywhere results in innovation nowhere. A big part of the reason Apple has been so successful is that they devote the bulk of their attention to only a few select market areas. By trying to innovate everywhere, so to speak, Microsoft runs the continued risk of spreading itself too thin and not really having a fundamental impact in any one market.

The Raspberry Pi was originally conceived as an educational platform. Much like the BBC Micros and Apple ][s of yore, the Raspi is designed to get kids into programming by giving them a very tiny but still useful computer. Truth be told, we haven’t seen any educational hacks involving the Raspberry Pi, most likely because makers and tinkerers like us have been buying up all the available boards. The Raspi team is trying to correct this problem by holding a summer programming contest aimed at kids under 18 years of age.
The rules are simple: there are two age brackets, under 13, and ages 14-18. The kid who writes the best piece of software for the Raspberry Pi gets $1000, with five $200 runners-up in each category. The contest will run for eight weeks, timed perfectly to coincide with summer vacation.
There will be a few more weekly contests the Raspi team will be holding in the future, but with eight weeks to complete a project we can’t wait to see all the neat stuff kids are going to make.

Develop Conference: 'The argument that there isn't a big enough user base is irrelevant', claims Turbulenz COO
The hotly debated and controversial HTML5 platform for browser is the future of gaming, claims Gavin Shields.
Speaking at the Develop in Brighton conference, the Turbulenz COO said that creating games for console had become too risky for many developers, whilst discoverability was a huge problem for developers on the App Store.
He added that the HTML5 platform had overcome many of its previous issues, such as the size of its potential userbase, which he cited as 1.3 billion, whilst it was also cheaper for developers to create content for compared to large triple-A console titles.
"I know many of you will have an overriding issue with all I’ve just said," said Shields, in reference to his positivity surrounding web platform.
"I know the name HTML5 invokes much cynicism but I have no doubt that it is the future. Since Google enabled Webgl by default in its browser last year, approximately 1.3bn have access to browsers that can play modern games in Javascript HTML5.

WD has debuted its latest hard drive, the WD Red, which is designed to work with small and home office NAS drives.
Available in 1TB, 2TB and 3TB capacities, the new components is aimed at those customers who have bought a two to four bay NAS drive and incorporates WD’s proprietary NASware technology, which enables users to improve reliability and performance as well as improving stability.
The thinking behind this latest piece of tech came from the observation that consumers would often buy a NAS server without the drives and then add standard desktop PC hard drives – as opposed to using the far more expensive server rated drives. Unfortunately this occasionally led to bugs within the firmware or hardware as the devices are not always optimised for NAS usage.
“Until now, customers had to choose between using desktop or high-end server drives for their home or small office NAS systems – neither of which were both cost effective for consumer solutions and fully NAS compatible,” said WD’s senior director for product marketing, Melyssa Banda.
“WD saw this challenge as a perfect opportunity to design a better solution so we developed WD Red drives, an optimised product for this rapidly-growing segment.”
With the entry level segment of the NAS market expected to show a compound annual growth rate of 86.1 per cent between now and 2016, WD is keen to position itself at the forefront of this market.
The 1, 2 and 3TB models of the WD Red are expected to retail at £69.99, £89.99 and £129.99 respectively.

Google is close to agreeing to pay $22.5 million to settle a complaint over cookie privacy.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Google has bypassed a ‘do not track’ setting selected in Apple’s Safari web browser.
The fine is expected to be the largest ever imposed on a single company by the US Federal Trade Commission.
The FTC claims that Google circumvented Apple’s protections on the iPad and iPhone against the setting of third-party cookies.
Cookies are small text files that are stored on a user’s device to track which websites they have been visiting. While users pressed a link to ask for Google cookies to be set, cookies from Google’s DoubleClick ad network were also automatically set on the device.
Although the penalty is a fraction of Google's $40 billion annual revenue, and $10 billion annual profits, it comes as the FTC is also investigating Google over whether the company favours its own properties, such as YouTube, over rivals.
Google has indicated that the bypassing of Safari’s settings was an unintentional mistake.

Andy Rubin has already made it known that Google isn't planning to profit from the Nexus 7's hardware -- according to him, it's being sold at cost. However, a teardown conducted by TechInsights (and reported by Fudzilla) suggests that the true extent of our 'discount' may have been underplayed, because the Nexus 7's parts alone reportedly add up to around $184. That's just $15 below the current asking price for an 8GB model, before you even get to all the added costs like packaging, distribution, support, marketing and the tidy $25 Google Play voucher that comes as part of the bundle. Now, these figures may not be reliable, because who knows what deals Google and ASUS managed to negotiate, but still, it's further evidence (in case you needed it) that this tablet makes for a smart purchase.

Microsoft has already expressed its fondness for Perceptive Pixel's gigantic capacitive touchscreens, which became apparent during a live demo at the company's Windows 8 presentation at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, but now that friendship has become a bit more official. During Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference keynote in Toronto this morning, Steve Ballmer announced that Perceptive Pixel would be coming in-house, with Microsoft acquiring the display maker. The move seems to be in line with the company's recent shift to hardware manufacturing, beginning with last month's Surface introduction and its reinforced commitment to the recently renamed PixelSense smart table solution -- MS has just seized an opportunity to get a bit more hands-on. Full (limited) details are in the press release after the break.
