Microsoft has lately become big on touchscreens -- sometimes, really big -- which makes it only natural that the company would want to explore Windows 8's on-screen keyboard in detail. As User Experience team member Kit Knox explains, the company has made an about-face from the days ofunceremoniously foisting touch on a desktop OS. Windows 8's keyboard is not only optimized for fingers, but accommodates the little subtleties that others might miss, like the typical postures for tablet use and our tendencies to frequently hit certain wrong keys. The crew at Redmond ultimately hopes to bring out all the advantages of touchscreen keyboards while reminding us of some creature comforts from old-fashioned physical buttons. The surest way to understand Microsoft's keyboard research will likely be to pick up a Surface tablet this fall, but those of us who can't wait to put fingers on real glass can hop over to Knox's all-encompassing overview at the source link.

Browser-based F2P game garners more than 18,000 new registrations a day
EA’s free-to-play real-time strategy game Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances has surpassed one million users, the publisher has revealed.
The browser-based title was released two months ago in May after an open beta through EA’s website and its digital distribution platform Origin.
The one million figure would mean that the game has garnered approximately 18,500 registrations a day since release.
“Our vision is to create seamless play anywhere, anytime,” said EA exec Kristian Segerstrale.
“We want to connect all our games across all platforms. That’s the true next generation of gaming,”

A spokesperson for the company has confirmed it is working on a new tablet device that will be released soon.
Rumours regarding a possible tablet had been circulating for a while, however, the device was confirmed within a recently published report from the company.
The announcement confirmed that a new tablet was on the way and continued to say the device "had something unique to offer," compared to tablet devices currently available.
It would not be the first time HTC adopted a unique approach with their products following last year's HTC Flyer tablet, which included stylus integration but ultimately achieved lacklustre sales.
Confirmation of the new device from the company coincides with a leaked benchmark report for a device from a Taiwanese firm.
The device was listed as having a 1.3GHz nVidia Tegra 3 processor and a screen resolution of 1280 x 752.
Whilst the tablet ran Android 4.0.3 as its operating system during tests, this is likely to change to the latest Android 4.1: Jelly Bean prior to its launch.
Considering its slightly smaller screen resolution, which is lower than the standard for current tablets on the market, it may indicate that HTC will be aiming to push the device into the seven inch market - putting it in direct competition with Goggle's Nexus 7.

Time, place and device all influence mobile ad interaction.
A research report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and its Mobile Marketing Center of Excellence has revealed how receptiveness to advertising and media consumption varies according to device, time and location.
According to the report, there is strong ad interaction from tablet users, with nearly half (47 per cent) saying they engage with ads more than one a week, while 25 per cent of smartphone users say they interact with ads at the same rate.
If those figures are surprising, then prepare to be stunned: once these mobile device users engage with an ad, they are extremely likely to take action (80 per cent for smartphone users and 89 per cent for tablet users).
Time of day also has a direct impact on how mobile devices are used. For smartphone users, the three most impactful media moments of the day are:
- Early morning. When they first wake up, nearly 20 percent access social media.

EA Phenomic's free-to-play title reaches a million players in two months
[h=3]EA Phenomic[/h]
EA has demonstrated yet another success for free-to-play gaming, this time with the browser-based MMO Command & Conquer Tiberium Alliances. The title, available for the past two months on EA's website and the Origin platform, was developed under the Phenomic label, a studio acquired by the publishing giant back in 2006.
Tiberium Alliances is a huge step for EA in their push to become an 'all digital' company, as Labels head Frank Gibeau recently put it. The game works across multiple platforms, with EA hoping to make it a "truly portable experience" in the coming months. The game will be launched on mobile devices such as phones and tablets. Cloud saves for the game will enable each player to get their games on the go and everywhere they choose.

Believe it or not, there's a potentially cheaper (and more customizable) way to get NVIDIA's quad-coreTegra 3 into your life than to spring for a Nexus 7. Kontron is readying a rare Mini-ITX motherboard, the KTT30, that combines the ARM-based chip with expandable RAM and a trio of mini PCI Express slots for expansion like a micro SATA drive or a 3G modem. The external ports are more the kind you'd find on a do-it-yourself x86 PC, too: full-size HDMI, USB and even Ethernet make a show at the back. The only hurdles are an unusually throttled back 900MHz processor speed and, quite simply, the lack of release details. Kontron hasn't promised more than a release "coming soon" -- with much more complete Tegra 3 devices now hitting the $199 mark, though, we can't see the KTT30 putting much strain on any budding hobbyist's wallet.

The Nexus Q hacks are coming fast and furious now, and inching closer to true usefulness with each one. The latest is easily the most exciting -- a port of full-blown CyanogenMod 9 and XMBC for Android. While the hack was the work of the actual CM team, the Q is not an officially supported device. There are still plenty of quirks and bugs to iron out, but WiFi and Bluetooth are both up and running. If you've got one of the expertly crafted magnesium spheres, there's nothing stopping you from blessing it with a little custom ROM love. Just know that there's still lots of work to do, especially on the XMBC for Androidfront which is still very much in the experimental stage. To see CM9 in action check out the video after the break and hit up the more coverage link for install instructions.

Microsoft has unveiled its latest version of Office, which is bundled in with Office 365 - a subscription-based service that is integrated with the cloud.
According to various reports, the new version has clearly been designed to work with Windows 8, featuring touch and stylus support as well as the panelled Metro design that is characteristic of the OS.
But perhaps more interesting for the channel is the move to a cloud-based model, even on Office Home and Student, which includes a number of services, such as cloud email, that can be accessed from any web capable device.
“We are taking bold steps at Microsoft,” said Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer at the press conference in San Francisco. “The new, modern Office will deliver unparalleled productivity and flexibility for both consumers and business customers. It is a cloud service and will fully light-up when paired with Windows 8.”
For the consumer channel, this shift to a subscription-based model is essentially a concession of the consumer market. Some consumers might be tempted by the cheaper service packages such as cloud email, but most are likely to opt for free online apps, like Google Docs and Microsoft’s own Docs.com.
Nonetheless, it has been noted that the new software offers greater flexibility on licencing, for example, some packages can be made available for up to five devices per user, reflecting the greater consumerisation of business IT environments, and company licences can be revoked from a device when its owner leaves the company. This is hand in hand with recent moves that allow Microsoft partners to invoice their own customers directly.
All in all, the new software is reflective of the strategy employed in designing the new Windows 8 operating system. Microsoft is clearly looking ahead to a future of connected devices and where software is as much a service as it is a commodity.
Meanwhile, for those interested, Microsoft has made a preview of the new software available, which can be obtained here.

Developer Renegade Kid's eShop downloadable action game, Mutant Mudds, will soon be making its way to PCs everywhere. While no specific dates have been given, Renegade Kid promises that it will "soon be available through numerous digital distribution partners." The PC version, known as the "Grannie Edition" will feature 20 brand new levels in addition to the original 40.
We quite liked the 3DS version, notably the 3D mechanic used to switch between different planes. PC players, especially fans of difficult action games, should definitely take note.

Survival Diary, Day Four:
I don't know how much longer I can keep hiding here. It was safe at first; quiet even, like a snow-packed forest or the very depths of the sea, but his footsteps continue to grow closer. Eventually, he's going to find me, and when he does the very core of me will be torn inside out and used to purchase games likeSaints Row: The Third, The Walking Dead or any number of the other games on sale today.
I know now that my sanctuary beneath the sofa is no longer a sufficient haven in which to ensconce myself, so I must attempt to find new refuge. There's a very good chance this is my last entry, so please, if you find this, tell the pocket watch I love her.

Sure, thin, light and power-efficient may be the latest trend in notebook design, but one category of portable computing isn't afraid of going against the grain: the oversized gaming laptop. These big machines often flirt with double-digit weights, with screens in excess of 17 inches and the most powerful chipsets under the hood. Samsung's Series 7 Gamer is no exception, of course, weighing in at 8.39 pounds and packing plenty of power. The machine's recent US debut isn't its first foray into the market, however -- this machine first appeared in Europe late last year, albeit with an older processor and GPU. Now, Sammy has brought the rig stateside, adorning it with new parts for the New World, namely a 2.3GHz Core i7-3610QM CPU and NVIDIA's GTX 675M graphics processor. How does Samsung's first oversized gaming machine measure up? Let's find out.

The e-mail client in Windows 8 is the shell of a potentially good application — but Microsoft hasn't given it the proper care it deserves. With less than a month before Windows 8 hits RTM, Mail is a mess that doesn't support IMAP, can't connect to servers with self-signed certificates, and lacks basic features like flagging messages for followup. Metro Mail is feature-deficient compared not just to other desktop and tablet apps — it's behind Microsoft's own phone platform. Whether used on a tablet or desktop, this in-depth look concludes that Metro Mail in its current form will have users pining for a real desktop application.

A team of scientists has produced a hard disk made from sapphire and claim the device will last one million years.
The project was founded after nuclear waste depositories realised that they would have to preserve data which detailed the locations of where they had buried nuclear waste - not just for a few years, but for thousands of years into the future.
Currently. there is no form of digital data storage that could hold such sensitive information for that length of period with absolute certainty.
As a result, the team of scientists from waste management agency ANDRA produced a device suitable for the task - a hard disk made from sapphire onto which information is engraved using platinum.
The device itself consists of two thin disks of industrial platinum which measure around 20 centimetres across.
The process behind inscribing data onto the device involves inscribing information onto the side of one of these disks in platinum, which is then placed on top of the other and molecularly fused together.
Testing of the device has seen it submerged in acid in order to analyse its durability and simulate the ageing process.
Unfortunately, not everyone will be lucky enough to get their hands on one of the devices, with it carrying a price tag of $30,000.

Happy first-quarter birthday, Kepler. Your reference design is old enough for companies like EVGA, MSI, ASUS, Zotac to push your various clock speeds to the limit, while using custom coolers to avoid meltdown. Arguably the time to upgrade is now and that's why Hot Hardware has done a full-on round-up review, comparing some of the best GTX 680 and GTX 670 packages against each other and against the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. Dr. Suess it's not, but Google just had to make a bit of hullabaloo about the launch of its first branded tablet, the Nexus 7. The search giant took the wraps off it a few weeks back, but now pre-orders have finally started shipping to those who plunked down the $199 (or $249) for the Jelly Bean-packing slate. A few of you tipped us that the charge had finally hit your credit card, and now the official Google Nexus Twitter account has confirmed the devices have been packed on to trucks. So, celebrate, unless you're one of the hesitant ones that didn't place your order early in the Google Play store.

Since Google announced the Nexus Q media streaming device at the Google developers conference a few weeks ago, a lot of devs have been toying around with the idea of running Android apps on this small media sphere. [Det] over at BrickSimple threw his hat into the ring with that showcases the huge rotary volume knob on the Q.
The Nexus Q was hacked into running proper Android apps not long after it made its way into the hands of Google IO conference attendees. Of course with no way to get user input into Google’s little sphere, that hack was of questionable utility. Recently, [kornyone] over on the XDA developers forum got USB HID input on the Q, allowing for full mouse and keyboard support.
Not much has been said about the Q’s most prominent physical feature, the half hemisphere rotary encoder that serves as the volume knob. To build his Pong/Breakout clone, [Det]‘s app simply responds to volume up/volume down events by moving the paddle to the left or right.
A neat build, and hopefully we’ll see a few more Nexus Q hacks in short order.
