Square Enix has revealed that the winner of the Hitman: Sniper Challenge will be immortalised in a future Hitman game.
As of tomorrow (August 1st) PC owners who have pre-purchasedHitman: Absolution will be able to download Hitman: Sniper Challenge through Steam.
Hitman: Sniper Challenge has been created as a bespoke standalone experience to reward fans who pre-order Absolution. Online leader boards allow players to compare their sniping abilities with players around the world, supported by various challenges to determine who has the best sniping skills.

As well as being immortalised in a future game, the person crowned ‘The UK’s Ultimate Assassin’ will also be presented with a Golden Joystick at Future Publishing’s annual Golden Joystick Awards on October 26th.
“Hitman: Sniper Challenge has been an extremely successful pre-order incentive for us,” said Jon Brooke, brand director of the Hitman Franchise. “We’re really excited to be able to offer one fan a once in a lifetime prize and The Golden Joysticks is the perfect partner to showcase the Ultimate Assassin’s achievement.”

And 45 per cent expect to buy one in the next two years.
New Q2 data from the Consumer Electronics Association shows 29 per cent of online US consumers now own a tablet, a nine per cent increase on Q1, while global sales for the year are set to hit 68.5m.
Two-thirds plan to buy a tablet in the future, with 45 per cent to purchase one within two years.
Shipment revs are expected to reach $29.1 billion this year, $11bn more than originally thought in January, and the CEA claims this will push the consumer electronics industry revs across $200bn for the first time.
Kevin Tillmann, senior research analyst, CEA, said: "The overall market for tablets continues to grow significantly with household penetration increasing for the foreseeable future.
"Rarely has a new device category been so quickly embraced by consumers, businesses and education."

The Planetside 2 beta was originally, enthusiastically planned to begin today or tomorrow, but has now been pushed to "Friday or Monday," SOE president John Smedley tweets. On Thursday Smedley said the beta would launch early this week "barring any unforeseen circumstances."
Such circumstances must have included not having enough awesome, since today Smedley notes the delay is because "we have some stuff we need to make sure is awesome," and the team needs to polish and test a few things before a "massive" number of people attempt to play. We're not sure what scale SOE measures the awesomeness of its games by, but it looks likePlanetside 2 is aiming for very.

If you've been following the Apple vs. Samsung case even casually, you're probably aware that today marked the start of the patent trial in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, withJudge Lucy Koh presiding. And while the proceedings themselves won't necessarily justify an Olympics-level play-by-play, several interesting bits are sure to come to light. Today's nugget relates to Samsung's tablet roadmap, revealing that a Retina-like tablet may be in the works. The P10, as it's been labeled internally, packs a 2,560 x 1,600-pixel, 11.8-inch display, along with WiFi and LTE connectivity. Details are thin beyond that, and it's still possible that Samsung may not have a high-res tablet for us this year -- though with the company's mysterious New York City event coming up in two weeks, followed by IFA later in the month, there are plenty of opportunities in August alone for such an official reveal.
Philip Palermo contributed to this report.

The GHz Edition was supposed to deliver a significant mid-cycle performance bump to AMD's flagship 7970, without any attendant rise in cost. Instead, according to AnandTech, it looks like third-party vendors are looking to exploit the GE has a chance to max out every other spec in addition to the updated silicon and then charge a premium. Sapphire's new Toxic card is a case in point -- a 6GB double-helping of VRAM and a "Lethal" BIOS mode that takes base clock up to 1150MHz and memory clock to 6.4GHz (compared to 6GHz on the stock card). Those who can splutter up $699 will surely love it, but it's no substitute for the $499 upgrade that AMD originally intended.

The Wikipad gaming tablet has been ticking off boxes on its way to becoming a real product, and after bedding down with Gaikai game streaming and settling in to a 10.1-inch form factor, the rest of the hardware is now set. The chunky handheld will brandish an IPS display with 1,280 x 800 resolution, NVIDIA Tegra 3 T30 quad-core 1.4GHz processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, at least 16GB storage and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Other notable items include 8-megapixel rear / 2-megapixel front cameras, six hours continuous gaming battery life and a 2D-only screen instead of the 3D originally touted -- at least, for the first model. The controller remains the same with a pair of triggers, bumpers, joysticks and start/select buttons, and will cover the slate's speakers and route sound out the front. The rest of the story is yet to come, namely exactly what that price will be and when you'll actually be able to pew-pew with it, but the company has promised to 'fess up soon. Meanwhile, though airy for a tablet at 560 grams (1.2 pounds), it's not exactly PS Vita or Nintendo 3DS XL territory -- but then a heavyweight contender could be exactly what handheld gaming needs.

It has been discovered that the Uplay system Ubisoft uses to both check a game is legal and offer up gaming achievements, multiplayer, and additional content, actually contains a rootkit. The discovery was made by Tavis Ormandy, an information security engineer at Google, when he installed Assassin's Creed: Revelations on his laptop. He noticed that during the installation Uplay installed a browser plug-in that allows any website to gain access to your machine through a backdoor and take control of it.The plug-in can be classed as a rootkit because it is thought to allow continued privileged access to a machine without a user's consent."
Update: Ubisoft has released a statement saying it has issued a forced patch to correct the flaw in the browser plug-in for the Uplay PC application.

ModDB, the community site for user-made mods of PC games, is 10 years old.
The site, founded in 2002 by Scott Reismanis, has marked the occasion with a timeline documenting its 10-year history, during which it hosted the likes of Garry's Mod, the million-selling Source Engine mod.
Reismanis said: "Whether game creators encourage it or not, people love to tweak and change their favourite games. In the end we all win, give a modder complete creative freedom and the result is the creation of timeless classics such as Counter-Strike, Dotaand, more recently, DayZ, which millions have played."
More than 17,000 mods have been added to the site's database over the years, and it passed one hugely significant milestone just three weeks before its 10th birthday by reaching a million members. It currently sees between 2,000 and 4,000 new signups a day; if that rate is maintained ModDB will pass two million users within a year.
It's no surprise that the site continues to grow at such a rate: modders are capable of increasingly remarkable things. There's theArmA II mod, DayZ, which propelled Bohemia Interactive's ageing shooter to the top of the Steam charts. Almost 9,000 mods for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have been released since the launch of the Skyrim Creation Kit in February.
There's iCEnhancer, too, the stunning Grand Theft Auto IVgraphics mod, and the recent collaboration which saw a multiplayer mode added to Avalanche's open-world action game Just Cause 2. These aren't made just for fun; modding is one of the best applications for a game industry job. Valve hired Dotamodder Icefr0g for Dota 2, and has involved modders in development of upcoming multiplayer shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Back in 2008, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell said modding was "better [for] both honing your skills and demonstrating your talent to a potential employer than work experience."

July 30th, 2012, 19:11 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has confirmed it will release its Surface tablet PC the same day as Windows 8 - its next-gen operating system.
The company had previously stated that the Surface would be made available at the same time as Windows 8, however, it has now provided official confirmation.
"The next version of our operating system, Windows 8, will be generally available on October 26, 2012. At that time, we will begin selling the Surface, a series of Microsoft-designed and manufactured hardware devices," Microsoft said in its annual report, filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
Initially, only the Window RT version of the Surface will be available when the devices go on sale on October 26th.
Powered by ARM chips, the RT version of the device is expected to be far cheaper than the Pro edition of the Surface, which will ship with Intel's latest Ivy Bridge processors around 90 days after the base version of the tablet.
Whilst there has yet to be any indication of pricing for the devices from Microsoft, it is expected the Surface will carry a price tag similar to that of the iPad and other devices on the market, in order to remain competitive.
"Suggested retail pricing will be announced closer to availability and is expected to be competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel Ultrabook-class PC," it said in a statement.
However, the lack of an official statement from Microsoft didn't deter Swedish retailer Webhallen from pricing the device, who listed the device on its online store with a price tag of £650 for the base RT version, and a staggering £1,389 for the Pro edition.

Mysterious pictures appear on Vietnamese website.
While the world waits for Apple to announce a seven inch iPad, here comes an entirely unexpected addition to the rumour mill: are RIM working on a ten inch BlackBerry Playbook?
These pictures are from Vietmanese site Tinhte and appears to show a big brother to BlackBerry's underwhelming seven-incher released last year.
The tablet appears to have an iPad-esque 4:3 aspect ratio, 10-inch display and a SIM card slot, presumably for 4G.
In terms of design, the new tablet mirrors the smaller, original tablet, with a glass front and rubberised back.
According to a leaked roadmap, a larger tablet codenamed Blackforest is due next year.

Redmond's upcoming Surface slate is brimming with potential -- but Microsoft recognizes that building its own tablet comes with some inherent risks. In the firm's recently submitted annual report, Microsoft tells the Security and Exchange Commission that the new family of slates could loosen ties with some of its partners. "Our surface devices will compete with products made by our OEM partners," the report reads, "which may affect their commitment to our platform." This, of course, echos Acer's sentiment, which accused Microsoft of forgetting the PC builders that helped it become what it is today. Then again, maybe Acer was just preemptively upset it wouldn't get picked for Windows 8's starting line-up.

For the past month, the only way you could play Skyrim’s add-on Dawnguard was to own an Xbox 360. Clarifying news from Bethesda confirms that could be the case for much longer.
The game’s debut DLC made it out for 360 owners in late June, but the announcement mysteriously omitted any mention of a PC and/or PS3 release at the time. Well, not so mysterious anymore.
“We have not announced Dawnguard for any other platform, nor given a timeline for any such news,” Bethesda marketing head Pete Hines stated on Twitter. “If we have news, I promise I’d tell you.”
Microsoft and Bethesda did indeed have a timed-exclusivity deal for the content, but it was only for a 30-day period after release (which has since come and gone). That in mind, the content could have arrived as early as today.
No other word on the matter was provided, so at this time it’s unclear if this is just a minor hold-up or something more indefinite.

July 27th, 2012, 20:47 Posted By: wraggster
Webhallen has today admitted that the prices it listed for the Surface tablet on its online store were indeed fake - and not received from Microsoft.
The retailer had the rumour mill buzzing yesterday after it allegedly lifted the lid on Microsoft's Surface tablet, listing the device from between £650 for the base 32GB model and almost £1,389 for the 128GB Pro edition.
However, the company has now confirmed to blogging site Techie Buzz it has received no such information from Microsoft, and instead hiked up the prices in order to attract potential customers.
Webhallen told Techie Buzz: "Our customers are very interested in pre-ordering these products, so we have set a high preliminary pricing for the lineup so that they may be able to pre-order them,"
"Just to clarify, we have not received any pricing from Microsoft regarding MRSP or purchasing net cost, and any people who have booked the Surface at this high price will of course have their order adjusted before any product is shipped. So we're not going to overcharge anyone for being an early adopter," the retailer continued.
Many initially questioned the huge price difference that would have existed between the Surface and its closest competitors, such as the new iPad.
If Microsoft are looking to compete with - and possibly de-throne Apple within the tablet market - it is widely believed they will need to price their device competitively.
The buzz generated by the news yesterday reflects the sheer amount of interest consumers have in the tablet.
Having already unveiled the Surface under secretive circumstances and remaining tight lipped about the device until now, Microsoft might want to provide prospective buyers with more information soon, if they want to capitalise.

A key executive at Blizzard Entertainment has personally endorsed Gabe Newell's claim that Windows 8 "is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space".
Rob Pardo, the executive vice president of game design at the Diablo 3 studio, quoted Newell's comments on his personal twitter account before adding that Windows 8 is "not awesome for Blizzard either".
Discussion on the value of Windows 8 has hitherto been relatively quiet among games designers. Yet Newell, the co-founder of Valve Software, sparked debate on the subject by describing Windows 8 as "a catastrophe".
