As the popular MMO reaches 200m registered users, Jagex plans to take RPG to new devices
Popular MMO RuneScape is to break from its browser roots and go multi-platform, the developer’s CEO has revealed to Develop.
Jagex boss Mark Gerhard said the studio’s ambition for the game was to make it ubiquitous on any device that is connected to the internet, as well as be available in multiple languages.
He said that players could expect a major step forward in innovation for the RPG in the coming months.
Whilst Gerhard did not specify which platforms and devices RuneScape would be expanding to, the game could perceivably be released on smartphones and tablets, whilst in the past Jagex has tried to bring the title to consoles.
"Our vision was to be platform and language agnostic,” said Gerhard.

Blizzard has announced that the widely anticipated fourth expansion for its hugely successful MMO World of Warcraft, Mists of Pandaria, will launch on September 25th.
The latest expansion takes players to the long-lost continent of Pandaria and puts them in control of its long-awaited, native race, the Pandaren.
Other features include the all-new monk as a playable class, an increased level cap of 90, a whole new continent to explore and quest within, as well as new scenarios, challenge modes and aPokemon-esque pet battling system.
At a time full of struggling MMOs, declining subscriber numbers and successful free-to-play alternatives, it's a plentiful offering to lure players back to Azeroth.
The expansion will be available in a number of different editions.
A standard retail copy of the game will set you back £29.99, which will also be available online through direct digital download.
The digital deluxe version is priced at £39.99 and is only available through download from Blizzard's store but includes a variety of exclusive content, such as an exclusive in-game mount and pet.
Finally, a collector's edition of the title will be available and will include all of the above, along with:
- Behind-the-Scenes DVD and Blu-Ray: Learn about the creation of Pandaria with this two-disc set featuring over an hour of commentary, insider interviews, and developer roundtables.
- Collector's Edition Soundtrack CD: Experience 20 orchestral pieces from Mists of Pandaria.
- The Art of Mists of Pandaria Book: Explore this 208-page hardcover tome featuring never-before-seen pieces from the expansion, from early concepts to final 3D renderings.
- Chen Stormstout Mouse Pad: Equip your desk with this special-edition mouse pad featuring the legendary Pandaren brewmaster.
"Mists of Pandaria contains the biggest variety of new content we've ever created for a World of Warcraftexpansion, with features that will appeal to new players, veterans, and everyone in between," said Blizzard CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime.

Access for everyone - not just O2 customers.
O2 has announced its plans to set up several wifi hotspots across London during London 2012.
Locations include Oxford Street, Leicester Square and Exhibition Road, which will all benefit from the scheme which was set up in cooperation with Westminster City Council and the Royal Borough of Kensington.
As with other 'free' wifi services, access will be free to all who wish to use it, even those who are not O2 customers themselves.
The service has been introduced to prevent travellers making who are their way to London for the Olympic Games from running up a large 3G roaming bill by offering simple, widespread web coverage.
Users will only need to register for the service once and they will be connected to the service automatically whenever they are in range of any of the available hotspots.

$550 sequel to RIM's underwhelming debut tablet rumoured to land next week.
The Nexus 7, iPad Mini, and Kindle Fire variants have nabbed all tablet-based headlines lately, but Fudgezilla reports RIM will launch a 4G-enabled (LTE) PlayBook on Tuesday, July 31st.
Besides speedy mobile web connections, other features are said to include:
* Seven-inch display
* 32GB memory
* 1.5 GHz dual-core processor
* 3MP front-facing camera and 5MP rear camera
* Powered by PlayBook OS 2.0
The caveat to RIM's potential profit provider? It's likely to receive a Canada only launch to begin with.
Meanwhile, Bell is thought to be the only operator that will supply the BB tablet, with US networks anxious that the BlackBerry devices will gather dust.

A Diablo 3 exploit has been found that turns wizards invulnerable.It involves using the Teleport and Archon skills, a poster on the Blizzard forum explained(via Kotaku). - Step 1: Select Teleport - Fracture. Bind it to a key
- Step 2: Select Archon, tested with Improved Archon
- Step 3: Hover your mouse over or near your charcter
- Step 4: Press Teleport
- Step 5: QUICKLY(!) Press Archon
The bug was unearthed yesterday. Blizzard hasn't reacted.The result? Hours of worry-free Hardcore farming. How Blizzard will counter the influx of ill-gotten spoils flooding the Real Money Auction House remains to be seen, but a hotfix for the exploit is surely not far away.

LG has unveiled the V720, a new series of all-in-one PCs, featuring 27-inch IPS HD panels and an Intel Ivy Bridge processor option. The line consists of a high-end model with Intel's 3rd generation Core i5 and an IPS 1,920 x 1,080 3D panel, and a lesser model with a 2nd generation Core i3 and the same display sans 3D. Other specs include 750GB SATA3 hybrid or standard drives, up to 8GB DDR3 RAM, USB 3.0 and NVIDA's GT640M 1GB graphics. Photos show a white and silver looker with well concealed computer guts, but don't count on being able to pick up one of the minimalist units in the US -- LG normally keeps its PC offerings exclusively in Asia.

Mojang has seen the sort of success that most game developers dream of with Minecraft, but it looks like it's now also found itself thrust into the rarely desirable world of patent lawsuits. As revealed by Minecraft creator Notch himself on Twitter, Mojang is being sued by the Texas-based Uniloc (which has also taken aim at Electronic Arts, Gameloft and others) over some alleged patent infringement in the Android version of Minecraft. That supposed infringement is not related to any of the distinctive gaming elements of Minecraft, but rather the means through which the game verifies users -- something Uniloc alleges is a violation of patent #6,857,067, a "system and method for preventing unauthorized access to electronic data." Not surprisingly, Notch has taken the opportunity to make his thoughts on software patents known (see his blog post below), and also make absolutely clear that he intends to fight the suit, saying that "if needed, I will throw piles of money at making sure they don't get a cent." That's also prompted a response from Uniloc CEO Ric Richardson, who notes that he had no direct involvement in this particular patent or suit, but defends the company's practices and insists that it is not a patent troll.

July 23rd, 2012, 19:37 Posted By: wraggster
It was only a matter of time until ArmA II zombie mod DayZ spawned a fully-fledged stand-alone title.
And that’s exactly what we have in the form of The War Z, whichIGN reports is being developed by previously unheard of Hammerpoint Interactive and published by the little-known Arktos Entertainment.
Like DayZ, it will offer gamers the chance to fight and scavenge for survival amidst the fallout of a zombie apocalypse. And like DayZ, the game will be deliberately unforgiving in its nature.
“While we began developing our game before DayZ, we've been encouraged by fact that DayZ has become so popular,” Arktos’ executive producer Sergey Titov stated. “And yes, of course some of our latest design decisions were influenced by the DayZ community forums.
“We started thinking about doing a zombie game last year and began developing a quest-based MMO set in a large, zombie infested world. Players would be able to explore and ‘unlock’ new areas on the map as they progress through quests assigned to them in-game.
“When DayZ was released to the public we were really excited to see another game that was akin to what we were working on – we were like ‘wow, that’s cool, we’re not the only ones making something like this’. As we saw the popularity of DayZ grow, and how players and the community were reacting, we realized two things – first, there was validation that our idea of making a zombie MMO was actually right and that there is a market/player base for it, and second, we decided to abandon the idea of unlocking parts of the map as you progress – rather, the player will be able to freely roam the world and gather information and quests by exploring notes, diaries, etc left behind by both real players and NPCs.”
And to his credit, Hammersmith’s senior games designer Eric Nordin isn’t afraid to admit the extent to which his team will draw influence for DayZ.
“Most of our team members are fans of DayZ. We love the way DayZ was able to capture the primal feel of being alone in a big hostile environment, where your biggest enemies are not necessarily zombies, but other players,” he admitted.
“And these other players are no different from you – they’re scared humans who are trying to survive - this is the same feel we want to capture in WarZ.
“The major difference is that DayZ is a fantastic mod for a hardcore military simulation game, so it is all set in that type of environment. We are creating a standalone game, with the entire world designed around a zombie apocalypse, so that players feel completely immersed in that environment. We want players to see the signs of struggle and destruction from humans fighting with zombies and have that sense of fear and anxiety when they are exploring the world.”

Street Fighter X Tekken's character DLC pack has suffered a short delay on Steam.
It was intended for release on Friday alongside the DLC's arrival on Games for Windows Live, but "an unforeseen error with the Valve submission process" has force Capcom to hold off the Steam release."The ETA for the Steam version is now early next week. We deeply apologize for the delay, and ask for the continued patience of Steam users while we work through this error," said Capcom.
The DLC update unlocks 12 new characters for play, including Blanka, Sakura, Guy, Cody, Dudley, Elena, Jack, Bryan Fury, Alisa, Lars, Lei and Christie.

Whew, we did it. It's finally the last day of the Steam Summer Sale and we ... what's that? There's another day of this madness? That's just great. Well, hopefully you didn't budget your lemonade stand money the way we did this year in order to account for tomorrow, the final day of the sales promotion.
It's hard to keep up when today's sales include Quantum Conundrum andArma 2: Combined Operations, both at 40% off. Also, Batman: Arkham Citystands alone at 66% off, plenty of reason for us to pretend July 22 isn't even on the calendar. While we're at it, Prince of Persia, Evochron Mercenary, Torchlight,Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2, and Fable 3 are tempting us with a 75% discount. Finally, the indie bundle for today includes Bit.Trip Runner, Eufloria, and Machinarium.
Enough about games, who wants to buy some delicious lemonade so we're ready for tomorrow's sales?

Can't bear to part with your favorite browser extensions, but can't stand to see them devour your system memory? Maybe you should check out Firefox 15. According to Mozilla's Hacks blog, the browser's latest beta should patch up the majority of memory leaks gushing from Firefox add-ons. Also new, is the beta's support for Opus, a free audio format partially supported by Mozilla. The firm hopes competingbrowsers will pick up the format as well, calling it "as good or better than basically all existing lossy codecs." The blog makes quite a case for the format, citing tests and bitrate information, going as far as giving instructions on embedding Opus players in web pages. Check out the codec of tomorrow for yourself at the source links below.
