The game will be headed for Valve's Steam later this year
[h=3]Apogee Software[/h]www.apogee1.com
Apogee Software and Interceptor Entertainment have announced at QuakeCon that the classic first-person shooter, Rise of the Triad, is returning to PC. The game will be powered by Epic's Unreal Engine 3 and includes a full single-player and multiplayer experience. Interceptor Entertainment will be handling the game's development.
"We were seeking a strong, independent, hard-working development partner to herald the eagerly-anticipated return of 'Rise of the Triad'," said Terry Nagy, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Apogee. "We have indeed found that partner in Interceptor Entertainment."
"Apogee has given us a great opportunity with Rise of the Triad," said Interceptor CEO Frederik Schreiber. "We are all about fast-paced action and this was simply a perfect match for us as fans of old school shooters."
Rise of the Triad is expected for release on Valve's Steam service later this year.

Mike Morhaime admits players "took break" from WoW to play Diablo III
[h=3]Blizzard Entertainment[/h]www.blizzard.com
One of the standout data points from Activision'searnings announcement today was that the company's subscription numbers for World of Warcraft have fallen by more than a million in just the last three months. WoW now stands at just 9.1 million subs, but that isn't making Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime nervous.
Morhaime said on the investors call that it's actually quite normal with each WoW expansion pack for players to drop off. Moreover, this time around, before Blizzard launches the Mists of Pandaria expansion, Blizzard fans were pre-occupied with Diablo III, which Morhaime acknowledged had an impact on WoW as well.
"Historically we have seen usage decline towards the end of an expansion cycle. We saw a similar drop in subscribers in the months before Cataclysm, followed by a substantial return of players around the Cataclysm launch. We're also seeing that a number of players took a break from WoW to play Diablo III," he said.
As for Diablo III, while the game did put up record numbers, it also encountered a number of problems, which are well documented. Morhaime took the opportunity on the investors call to once again address concerns about the state of Diablo III.
"While Diablo III was our 14th #1 seller, we did experience some challenges. Due to the unprecedented influx of players a number of service issues arose that we needed to work around the clock to address. The vast majority of these issues were ironed out within a couple weeks of launch. As I mentioned in a letter to players recently, we're not satisfied with just breaking launch records. We want people to play and enjoy Diablo III for a long time," he said.

Microsoft might be wavering on the well established Metro moniker that it ascribes to its flat, live tile design aesthetic, but that doesn't make it any less pervasive in Windows 8's final build. Care to see? Impatient Windows fans have pilfered a handful of screenshots from Google and Windows Storepreviews, revealing what appears to be the final look for several of Windows 8's apps. Gumshoes at theNeowin forums uncovered fresh previews of the Photos, Mail, Messaging, People, Calendar Xbox music, Xbox video and Xbox SmartGlass applications. Liveside followed up on the forum's findings with a peek at the OS' baked in Bing integration. The camera interface's crop and video playback features make an appearance too, as do the operating system's legacy time wasters: Solitaire, Minesweeper and Mahjong -- slacking off never looked so good. Check them out for yourself in the gallery below, and agonize over how far away October 26th suddenly seems.

The Creative Assembly wants the next Total War to be more than just a strategy game – it wants to create Spielberg levels of drama.
The developer promised Total War: Rome II will feature more units on screen at any one time fighting across more detailed environments and terrain.
And the studio drew inspiration from the acclaimed Saving Private Ryan to make players care about those soldiers.
"We've got naval battle and land battles interacting for the first time, so you can throw ships up beaches and have people 'Saving Private Ryan-ing' it up the beach," The Creative Assembly's brand director Rob Bartholomew told MCV.
"When I say Saving Private Ryan, that's a phrase we're using around the office a lot because we're trying to inject that real feeling of horrific warfare so that the loss of your troops is going to affect you more deeply this time around.
"We're putting more personality into the troops that you'll send marching off across the battlefield by using facial motion capture and giving more resources to animation.
"We want to create that level of human strife, drama and character on a very macro-scale amongst these gigantic battles at the same time."
Total War: Rome II will be released for PC in 2013. A full interview with Bartholomew will be published onDevelop later this month.

In a twist that reinforces Valve's distaste for Windows 8, it turns out that the Source engine — the 3D engine that powers Half Life 2, Left 4 Dead, and Dota 2 — runs faster on Ubuntu 12.04 and OpenGL (315 fps) than Windows 7 and DirectX/Direct3D (270.6 fps); almost a 20% speed-up. These figures are remarkable, considering Valve has been refining the Source engine's performance under Windows for almost 10 years, while the Valve Linux team has only been working on the Linux port of Source for a few months. Valve attributes the speed-up to the 'underlying efficiency of the [Linux] kernel and OpenGL.' But here's the best bit: Using these new OpenGL optimizations to the Source engine, the OpenGL version of L4D2 on Windows is now faster than the DirectX version (303.4 fps vs. 270.6 fps). If OpenGL is faster, and it has a comparable feature set, and hardware support is excellent... why is Direct3D still the de facto API? With Windows losing its gaming crown and smartphones (OpenGL ES!) gaining in popularity, is it time for an OpenGL revolution?

The social network has revealed that 8.7 per cent of its 955 million active users might not be real.
Company filings published this week revealed that duplicate profiles made up 4.8 per cent of users, user-misclassified accounts made up 2.4 per cent, and users described as ‘undesirable’ made up another 1.5 per cent.
Combined, this makes up an estimated 83.09 million fake accounts.
Duplicates, the largest of group of ‘fakes’, is made up of accounts that users maintain in addition to their principal account.
Accounts categorised at user-misclassified are those that have been created for businesses, organisations or non-human entities such as a pet.
The last category, undesirable, contains profiles deemed to be in breach of Facebook’s terms of service, such as profiles used for sending out spam.
Facebook is hoping to make some money by persuading businesses to set up brand pages. The sheer number of fake profiles could seriously damage this approach.

Whispers of a 4G-enabled BlackBerry PlayBook did the rounds last week, and it turns out the talk wasn't cheap.
The catchily named '4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook' plans to do what its wi-fi only successor couldn't – provide a mobile internet connection, and compete with the iPad and co.
RIM reckons there's four reasons you should buy the 32GB tablet, with the first being that it's fast, while other pros include its seven-inch screen size and powerful HTML5 compatibility.
Tablet users will also have access to the BlackBerry Video Store for the first time, allowing them to download films and TV shows – a savvy move given the rise of mobile streaming.
The device will be available from selected networks in Canada on August 9th.

Digital Foundry on why Valve is embracing Linux as a hedge bet against the new Microsoft OS.
Valve's Gabe Newell is no stranger to controversy. PlayStation 3 was "a waste of everybody's time" and a"total disaster on so many levels". Xbox Live was a"train wreck" and the Xbox 360 itself "doesn't make my life any better, and in fact, it makes it a lot worse" - and now, the latest gem: "Windows 8 is kind of a catastrophe for everybody in the PC space".
Quite why Newell believes that Windows 8 is such a disaster isn't entirely clear. Initially, he points to PC manufacturers exiting the market, and says that "margins are going to be destroyed for a number of people". Perhaps Newell knows something about Microsoft's licensing costs that we don't - he did work there, after all - but it's hard to imagine that the Seattle giant is going to hike OS costs to a degree that would bring about the end of its hugely lucrative OEM income. The mobile market isn't so clear-cut though and many believe that the future of computing will take on a more portable form: OEMs don't have to pay a penny to Google to use Android, and the introduction of licensing costs for a Windows OS on tablets and smartphones isn't going to go down very well at all.
"Windows 8 is all about the unification of tablet, phone and desktop, but the creation of the Microsoft Store effectively removes Valve and Steam from the mobile side of the equation."
Perhaps the biggest issue with Windows 8 is that it comes across very much as a product designed for strategic, business purposes that puts Microsoft's interests before its end-users': it seeks to unify mobile and desktop operating systems to an ambitious degree that not even Apple has (yet) attempted. This obviously has huge amounts of potential for Microsoft, but only a small minority of PC owners will experience that. For the average desktop user, innovations like the Metro interface have little "real life" usage in the here and now - touch-screens aren't the norm in the average office or study - and questions also need to be asked about the design of Metro itself. The multitude of videos on YouTube demonstrates the problems people have getting on with the interface.
In addition to that, the previously open platform introduces an element that is sure to rub Valve up the wrong way: the Windows Metro store is an iTunes App Store-style "walled garden", curated by Microsoft, with code running in its own virtual machine that allows for compatibility between mobile and desktop devices. Metro apps can run on all hardware running Windows 8, but crucially, non-Metro programs won't run on the mobile "RT" version of the OS. This is seriously bad news for Valve, as Steam is effectively locked out from the expansion of the Windows market as it moves into mobile territory. Bearing in mind the revenue Microsoft is likely to generate from its own "App Store", it's safe to say that the firm will do everything it can to entice developers and publishers to move there.
Valve's response? It is hedging its bets by supporting Linux - the open source OS that OEMs can adopt without incurring license fees, and which will never include an App Store-esque digital distribution channel. In the here and now, rightly or wrongly, Linux has a reputation as a nerd's OS with little mainstream interest and few of the refinements of OSX or Windows. Newell has the solution:
"We're trying to make sure that Linux thrives. Our perception is that one of the big problems holding Linux back is the absence of games," he said.
"I think that a lot of people - in their thinking about platforms - don't realise how critical games are as a consumer driver of purchases and usage. So we're going to continue working with the Linux distribution guys, shipping Steam, shipping our games, and making it as easy as possible for anybody who's engaged with us - putting their games on Steam and getting those running on Linux, as well. It's a hedging strategy."
That's Venturebeat's edited transcript of Newell's words, anyway - apparently conditions for audio recording weren't particularly great. This may explain why All Things D, also at the event, has an alternative take on what Newell said:
"The big problem that is holding back Linux is games. People don't realise how critical games are in driving consumer purchasing behaviour... We want to make it as easy as possible for the 2,500 games on Steam to run on Linux as well."

Over-the-top role-playing shooter Borderlands 2 has escaped the scalpel of censorship unscathed.
Despite its cartoony but brutal abundance of what developer Gearbox Software calls "bloody chunks of awesomeness", the game will be released in all territories with no cuts made.
That includes stricter markets such as Australia and Germany, where the 2009 original was modified slightly to reduce the amount of cel-shaded blood on screen.
"We're happy to announce that Borderlands 2 will be uncut all over the world," Gearbox posted on its official blog.
"Some fans will remember that the first Borderlands game was a bit toned down in certain territories compared to the rest of the world. No longer!
"Do you live in Germany? Australia? Bandits will be just as likely to explode into bloody chunks of awesomeness as they will be in Canada or England (which is to say: very likely)."
That said, Gearbox has now added a new Gore Toggle option, allowing gamers to tone down the cartoony violence if they so choose.
Borderlands will be released for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on September 21st.

Google has announced that its latest Chrome update adds support for MacBook Pro’s retina display.
Chrome stood out as software that looked particularly poor on Apple’s next-gen MacBook Pro. Google have rectified that with a new update to please Apple users.
Available to download now from Google’s website, Chrome 21 also features new API for video and audio communication, allowing web applications to access the user’s webcam and microphone.
Instead of requiring a special plugin, the major stable update to the WebKit-based web browser includes a new HTML5 getUserMedia API. For security purposes users will be prompted to grant apps permission to access their hardware.
Chrome 21 also closes a total of 26 security holes in the browser. These include integer overflows, use-after-free errors, and out-of-bounds writes in the PDF viewer. A full list of security fixes can be found at Google’sChrome Release Blog.

EA BioWare is making the jump to lightspeed -- and free-to-play. That's right: As of this fall, Star Wars: The Old Republicwill transition to a hybrid F2P business model.
Players who choose to engage in free-to-play will be able to experience a majority of the game for free, including the first 50 levels and all eight classes. BioWare did state that there will be restrictions, but those can be removed with microtransactions.
SWTOR will still be available in the standard subscription model. Subscribers will be given an allowance of store currency, called Cartel Coins, to buy customizable gear and other niceties. Current subscribers and those who sign back up before the fall can also rack up special rewards for when the transition is made.
BioWare GM Matthew Bromberg said that this is the next logical step for the game: "Players want flexibility and choice. The subscription-only model presented a major barrier for a lot of people who wanted to become part ofThe Old Republic universe."
Check out Massively's recent Hyperspace Beacon column on why F2P was inevitable for the game. BioWare's also posted a F2P FAQ with all the nitty-gritty details.

Sony's next-generation tablet appears to have leaked on internal slides spotted by German news site,Mobiflip. In short, it's thinner and lighter than the Tablet S, while internal specifications also trump it, including a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, Android 4.0 ("or later"), 3G connectivity and three storage options; 16, 32 and 64GB. The whole tablet follows the same folded magazine design of Sony's existing tablet, is splashproof and houses a 6,000mAh battery that the slides suggest will manage 10 hours of WiFi-based web browsing. There's even some tentative pricing, with the different-sized models marked up at $450, $550 and $650, respectively. The pictures also cover Sony's plans to add a lightweight keyboard to its next tablet, similar to Microsoft's Surface plans, but with some Smart Cover-esque kickstand skills thrown in for good measure. We've added a shot of the keyboard cover after the break, but you can take a tour of the rest of the slides -- which include a raft of accessories and docks -- at the source link below.
Update: We've been in touch with a Sony spokesperson, who had "no comment at this stage." We may have to wait until next month, when European trade show IFA kicks off -- with Sony in attendance -- until we hear anything more concrete.

ArmA II’s mod monster DayZ is rapidly closing in on 1m registered users, so where does it go from here?
Creator Dean Hall touched on a variety of topics regarding his smash hit with VG247, including what has to happen for the title to go standalone and the possibility of the new version arriving in 2012.
“I want to see it become a standalone game, following the Minecraft model of a low price point, but that will only work if we say that everyone is going to pay,” Hall said. “In order for people to not feel ripped off we need to have a load of new content; so, things like base-building, tidying and cleaning up animations and add ragdoll physics as the like.”
Hall hopes that the standalone effort makes it out this year, so long as a publishing agreement with Bohemia Interactive and/or another company can be reached.
DayZ currently boasts over 933,000 registered users.

To accompany Windows 8, Microsoft has released some interesting keyboard and mouse devices, all of which are wireless and use Bluetooth. The Wedge Touch Mouse is an artful product shaped as an angular wedge, being compact enough for travel too. Wedge Mobile Keyboard follows the style of laptop keyboards and includes a snap-on cover. Sculpt Touch Mouse is more like a classic mouse, but features a four-way touch-scroll strip. Finally, we have Sculpt Mobile Keyboard, which is a lighter version of a classic curved keyboard. All four are on the expensive side, but at first blush seem high-quality.

Microsoft has just unveiled Outlook.com, the planned successor to Hotmail.com. It includes a lot of what you'd expect from email today, including storage (images, data), a calendar, integration with other Microsoft tools, and of course a clean UI. According to ZDNet, 'Outlook.com is integrated with Windows and Office, and can pull in Twitter, Facebook, Gmail and LinkedIn contacts. The new mail client has the Metro look and feel. And it is providing users with more granular control over which ads they see and where they see them.
